Abstract

The substantial loss in the shielding ozone layer has resulted in an increase in the solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) on the Earth’s surface, which is detrimental for all living organisms ranging from prokaryotes to eukaryotes, including humans. This has augmented the scientific concern and interest in searching for the photoprotective compounds from diverse organisms. Cyanobacteria, the primitive O2-evolving photosynthetic prokaryotes are solely dependent upon the solar radiation for their energy requirement and thereby have to always face the UV-B stress. UVR affects cyanobacteria either directly or indirectly by inducing oxidative stress. In response, they have evolved the capacity to synthesize, accumulate and metabolize a variety of UV-absorbing compounds such as, mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs), scytonemin, carotenoids, biopterin glucoside, as a strategy to reduce the direct and indirect damaging effects of UVR.

Abstract

Being an obligate photoautotroph, cyanobacteria must cope with a wide range of fluctuating environmental factors, including high light and ultraviolet radiation (UVR) that may lead to oxidative stress by upsetting the cellular redox status. Photo-induced oxidative stress by means of oxidizing agent such as reactive oxygen species (ROS) may damage several biological processes. In response to several adverse effects of solar UVR, cyanobacteria have developed different strategies such as heat dissipation mechanisms, synthesis of UV- absorbing/screening compounds and antioxidant systems to overcome the detrimental effects of intracellular oxidant molecules. This review deals with UV-induced oxidative stress and their counteracting mechanisms operating in cyanobacteria.

Vacuole: A fluid filled space within the cytoplasm surrounded by membrane called as tonoplast, that occupies most of the volume of cell. Aside from storage, the main role of the central vacuole is to maintain turgor pressure against the cell wall.

Vacreation: The pasteurization of the milk or cream under reduced pressure by direct steam is called vacreation. This process removes feed and other volatile flavors from cream and to pasteurize it for butter making. This is also called vacuum pasteurization (Plate 623).

Vacuum: The state of negative pressure. It is equal to atmospheric pressure minus absolute pressure.

Vacuum cooling: A technique of cooling vegetable (leafy vegetables, asparagus, brussels sprouts) having a high surface to volume ratio; rapidly and uniformly by boiling off some of their water at 10C and at low pressure (5 mm of Hg) into a sealed container. The produce is cooled by evaporation of water from the tissue surface and is more rapid than hydro cooling (Plate 624).

Vacuum drier: A drier used to dry heat sensitive products where low pressure lowers the temperature, helps to retain natural flavour and minimizes oxidation and browning is called vacuum drier (Plate 625).

Vacuum cooling: It is a technique based on liquid evaporation which produces a rapid cooling effect in products containing free water. Suitable only where removal of the free water will not cause structural damage and where there is no barrier, e.g. a thick wax cuticle, to water loss. Subjecting suitable products to vacuum pressure allows part of the water contained in them to boil out at relatively low temperatures. Used successfully in reducing postharvest deterioration in fruits and vegetables, thus prolonging shelf life, during processing of some products, including liquid foods and bakery products, and rapid cooling of cooked meat, fish products and ready meals.
Vacuum drying: Removal of liquid from a solid mate rial while in a vacuum system, to lower the temperature at which evaporation takes place and thus prevent heat damage to the material. It may be used with frozen food.
Vacuum evaporation: Concentration technique in which the use of high temperatures is avoided by subjecting the substance to a vacuum, causing it to boil at a lower temperature. The process is performed in a chamber surrounded by a water jacket through which water is circulated to control temperature. Particularly useful for products where heat-induced protein de- naturation should be avoided, e.g. liquid egg whites and skim milk.
Vacuum flask thermostat: An electrically or mechanically operated instrument which monitors the temperature in an enclosure and if it deviates from a preset value increases or reduces the energy input to or abstracts more or less energy from the space to maintain the preset temperature. Commonly used in gas or electric ovens, refrigerators and freezers, deep fat fryers, slow cookers and the like.

VAM fungi are of worldwide distribution. They are present in the soil in form of chlamydospores, zygospores and azygospores and have been recovered from the soils of a variety of habitats e.g. agricultural fields, nutrient deficient soils, sand dunes and deserts, industrial wastes, sodic soils, polluted sites, sewage, eroded sites and others like forests, open woodlands, scrub, savana, heaths, grasslands, anthracite and bituminous coal wastes. There are several reports of VAM fungi from diverse habitats from India.

VA-mycorrhizal associations occur widely throughout the plant kingdom. They have  been reported to be present in Bryophytes, Pteridophytes, Gymnosperms and Angiosperms in nearly all the geographical regions of the world. Most of the agricultural and horticultural crops belonging to diverse families have been shown to form VA-mycorrhizae. Many species of plants of economically important families have been reported to be mycorrhizal. Likewise, many of the plantation crops like coffee, tea, citrus, timber trees, many of the fruit trees and medicinal plants have been shown to form VA-mycorrhiza.

Favourable effect of VAM association in plants has been attributed to an increased nutrient uptake by mycorrhizal roots. The transfer of ion from the soil to the roots by mass flow or by diffusion depends on the mobility of that particular ion in the soil. Ions such as NO₃^- ,SO ₄^— and Ca⁺⁺ may move rapidly through the soil to the roots by mass flow, and uptake would be limited by the absorbing capacity of the roots. On the other hand, ions such as H₂PO₄^-, NH₄⁺, Zn⁺⁺ and Cu⁺⁺ are poorly mobile and move to the roots by diffusion, the rate limiting steps is likely to be the movement to the root surface. Under such conditions, it is expected that uptake would be increased if ions could be moved rapidly through extramatrical hyphae of the VAM fungi rather than diffusing slowly through the soil. It is now well established that VA mycorrhizae enhance the uptake of phosphate by the roots but it is likely that they can also assist in the uptake of other ions. The following account provides an information on the findings of Indian mycorrhizasts on the effects of VA mycorrhizal association on nutrient uptake in the plants and its physiological implications.

Mycorrhiza research is relatively recent. Although, it was in 1885 that A.B. Frank made reference for the first time to the term “Mycorrhiza”, it took him nine more years to establish the symbiotic relationship between the fungus and its host plant. It took a much longer time to convince the rest of the scientific community of the validity of Frank’s theory. Researches carried out between 1917 to 1950 confirmed that “Mycorrhizal colonization is a beneficial symbiosis between tree and fungus”. It is an unique partnership in nature, where the higher plants share their photosynthates with their fungal partners and provide them shelter, the fungal partners in return provide protection to the root system and assist it in performing its functions especially anchorage and absorption of nutrients / water from soil more efficiently.

The ectomycorrhizal fungi have been in use as a biological tool in improving the performance of forest trees since long. Better performance of forest trees is ensured by making them mycorrhizal, employing efficient strains of ectomycorrhizal fungi.

Extensive studies have been carried out to explore the possibility of using mycorrhizal model system in inducing suppressions of potential soil-borne pathogens. Its relevance becomes all the more important since most of the soil-borne diseases, by and large, are not easily controlled by conventional methods.

Diseases due to Fungal Pathogens

Most of the studies conducted on the interaction of VAM fungi and fungal pathogens suggest that mycorrhizae decrease the severity of disease, while a few studies suggest that there is either no effect or there is an increase in the severity of disease. It has been pointed out that in view of the fact that VAM fungi deter the severity of disease they may be used as biocontrol agents. Various mechanisms by which VAM could suppress the fungal pathogens have been suggested on the basis of experimental evidences.

During the last thirty years, there has been a growing appreciation of the impor tance of VAM fungi in improving the plant growth and yield. They have been extensively studied also in India. Considering the potential importance of these organisms in the recovery of disturbed sites and their possible use in land reclamation, researches regarding their relationship to ecosystem recovery have now been initiated also in India.

Large areas of land in the country called wastelands are degraded and lying unutilized due to various constraints. Part of it called culturable, has the potential for the development of vegetation cover. On the other hand, part of it called unculturable, has no potential for the development of vegetation cover. In addition to these natural wastelands, there are large tracts of wastelands created due to human activities such as mining, deforestation etc. Such wastelands are also culturable and a vegetation cover can be developed on them after removing the constraints with some efforts.

Since a method to cultivate VAM fungi in pure culture is not available as yet, clean and high quality VAM inoculum production is not possible. However, VAM technology is gradually getting a place in agriculture as well as reclamation and afforestation programmes. The inoculum currently being used includes infested fields soils, sievings from such soils, soil and roots of greenhouse plants, or pot culture inoculum derived from surface disinfected spores of a single VAM fungus on a host plant grown in a sterilized growth medium. Attempts are being made to manipulate VAM fungi, rooting media, hosts and fertilizers in order to secure superior quality of inoculum by these methods on a large scale. In addition, other techniques like tissue culture, hydroponic system etc. are also being attempted to cultivate VAM fungi in pure culture. The Indian mycorrhizasts have also attempted to devise and develop improved methods for production and storage of commercial VAM inoculum. The following description gives an account of Indian work related to production and storage of consistently high quality disease free VAM inoculum.

Of the various microorganisms present in and around roots, VAM fungi occupy unique ecological position as they are partly inside and partly outside the host. Their internal phase encounters competition and antagonism from other beneficial symbiotic microbes while their external phase faces competition and antagonism from beneficial non-symbiotic microbes present around the roots. Since they have an ensured source of nutrients from the host, they have comparatively better conditions for their growth and may exert greater effect on plants with other symbiotic and non-symbiotic microbes in and around their roots. It has been pointed out that investigations are needed on the interactions between VAM fungi and these beneficial microbes, and their effect on growth and productivity in plants. A bulk of information has been collected related to this aspect; however, authentic generalization has not been possible as yet. Following description gives an account of the work done by Indian mycorrhizasts on the interactions between VAM fungi and other beneficial symbiotic/non-symbiotic microbes in and around the roots.

It plays a crucial role in controlling infectious diseases and helps maintain both individual and herd immunity. Timely and appropriate vaccination of dogs not only safeguards their health but also prevents the spread of diseases to other animals and even humans in some cases. This article provides a detailed vaccination schedule for different diseases of dogs, including core and non-core vaccines, and highlights the importance of adhering to a proper vaccination regimen.

Vaccination is categorized into two main types: core vaccines and non-core vaccines. Core vaccines are considered essential for all dogs, regardless of their lifestyle or environment, while non-core vaccines are given based on individual risk factors like geography, lifestyle, and exposure to certain environments.

The world turned into a grossly inhabitable during the infamous COVID-19 pandemic, with community health issues everywhere. Each one felt unsafe if other earthly inhabitants were, be it humans or other living beings. Onset of SARS CoV-2 set a ‘new normal’ world order. The ever-evolving and mutating SARS CoV-2 variants extended the pandemic wave after wave thereby complicating the situation, pushing the global healthcare system to its limits and exposing its underbelly. The continually evolving variants were more aggressively transmissive and infective. As the world still reels under tremendous healthcare pressure, other infectious diseases are emerging as are identified by the World Health Organisation (WHO), creating international health emergency situations. The situation becomes alarming with the increasing zoonotic (spillover) and reverse zoonotic (spillback) factors being more proactive in the disease spread. There is a greater need to vaccinate not only humans but also animals, especially the domesticated ones and known reservoirs/carriers. Vaccines must be developed on priority and equitably distributed as the first step to counter a pandemic or potential pandemic. Vaccination is self-limiting due to increasing reported breakthrough infection cases. A strong link of the environmental health to the overall global health needs to be acknowledged, and due diligent measures taken. Hence, there is a strong need of the One Health approach as a 360° solution, and follow it up at global-scale both in letter and spirit. This chapter discusses spillover and spillback of diseases like SARS-CoV-2 and Mpox as case examples, the mitigation strategies and the need for workable One Health models, and challenges and measures to counter future outbreaks. It stresses on foolproof vaccination strategies across to catalyse individual and herd immunities for universal wellbeing.

The process of vaccine development involves numerous stages from research, discovery, innovation, formulation, testing, mass production, logistics, deployment and administering the vaccine to the target population. The COVID-19 pandemic expedited the endeavour to develop vaccine worldwide that is unparalleled in history. In addition to the steps that were similar during the usual vaccine development process, it called for stronger collaborative teamwork with stricter deadlines during the pandemic due to the emergency situation that built up everywhere (in its spread as well as severity). Research was expedited, potential candidate vaccines were discovered and the proofs of concept were designed that paved the way for pre-clinical efficacy testing. Multiple-step clinical trials to ascertain that the vaccines were effective and safe at least for ‘emergency use’ in human subjects were carried out swiftly. The emergency usage regulatory approval and recommending the usage pattern involved accelerated review procedures. It immediately followed rapid scaling-up for increased production in order to meet the need to save as many human lives as possible across the globe. The approved vaccines were simultaneously evaluated for safety through dedicated pharmacovigilance systems. The future of vaccine development shall also focus on improving the worldwide access to vaccines, managing the virus variants and streamlining mass vaccination campaigns. Comprehending the research, development and administration phases to create and implement life saving vaccinations within the regulatory framework amid international health emergencies as encountered during the COVID-19 pandemic and the enormous collective endeavours are highlighted in this chapter.

Introduction
The discovery of antibiotics and their subsequent use in combating infectious diseaseswas amedical breakthroughin the 20th century, as it completely changed the treatment approach to infections in general and bacterial infections in particular. In 1928, Alexander Fleming discovered Penicillin that started the started the so-called “golden age of antibiotic”. However, later in course of time the underuse, overuse and misuse of antibiotics in medical and veterinary practice led toemergence of drug-resistant pathogens resulting in phenomenon called antimicrobial resistance (AMR). In last few decades AMR has evolved silently and now threatening the human and animal health and has acquired the potential to be a next pandemic. AMR develops in a microorganism (e.g., bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites) when it accumulates genetic changes over time and fails to respond to antibiotic(s) leading to severe illness and mortality due to infection. Although, AMR is an evolutionary event occurring naturally in microbes, but inappropriate use of antibiotics in humans and animal medicine act as key driver to its spread. Global antibiotic consumption increased between 2016 and 2023, with total consumption rising by 16.3% to 34.3 billion defined daily doses (DDDs) in reporting countries and a projected 20.9% increase when extrapolated to nonreporting countries. World Health Organization (WHO) and other authorities have called for coordinated action to address antimicrobial resistance, a threat looming large on horizon. In 2021, there were an estimated 1.14 million deaths attributed directly to Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), with globally another 4.71 million deaths associated with AMR infections. This dataindicates a significant global health burden, with prophecy that AMR deaths could increase dangerously by 2050 if current trends continue. Global Action Plan (GAP) of the WHO highlights the importance of “One Health approach” calling for the joint action in human health, food production, animals and environmental sectors, to achieve better results. In the year 2015, the WHO initiated the Global Antimicrobial Resistance and Use Surveillance System (GLASS)to collect, analyze and share AMR data received from all countries. The Global Action Plan on AMR lists five strategic objectives to contain AMR viz., 1. optimizing the use of antimicrobials, 2. preventing infections (including the use of vaccines), 3. strengthening surveillance and research, 4. improving awareness and understanding of AMR, and 5. investing in new medical products. Vaccines stimulate the body’s immune system to recognize and attack specific pathogens and thus can prevent AMR through several ways viz., 1. reduce the incidence of infections leading to reduction in morbidity and mortality, 2. vaccines can prevent secondary bacterial infections e.g. Streptococcus pneumoniae after an initial infection with influenza, 3. produce herd immunity, 4. Prevention of infections resulting in decrease in use of antibiotics that reduces development of AMR. Immunotherapeutics can both combat and be complicated by Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). Other immunotherapies antibodies, and immune-boosting agents can directly fight AMR by preventing infections and reducing the need for antibiotics.

This chapter examines the principles, preparation and application of vaccines and biological products. It compares live attenuated, inactivated, toxoid, subunit, recombinant, vector, DNA and mRNA vaccines. Vaccine development phases, immunogenicity, safety, efficacy and post-marketing surveillance are introduced. The chapter discusses adjuvants, including alum, Freund’s adjuvants, liposomes, ISCOMs and delivery systems. Important veterinary vaccines for brucellosis, foot-and-mouth disease, anthrax, Newcastle disease, infectious bronchitis, goat pox, sheep pox and peste des petits ruminants are covered. Questions also address bacterins, toxoids, attenuation, booster requirements and reversion to virulence, providing practical knowledge of immunoprophylaxis in animal-health management.

Diseases of livestock cause massive economic losses in terms of reduced productivity and production and some of them have zoonotic potential posing a serious risk to public health. Vaccination is the most efficient and cost-effective method of controlling infectious diseases both in humans and animals. The eradication of smallpox and rinderpest from the globe; the elimination of hog cholera and brucellosis from many countries; and the control of diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease, canine distemper, rabies, influenza, and pseudorabies would not have been possible without the use of effective vaccines. Vaccination not only protects the vaccinated animals but also reduces disease among non-vaccinated animals through herd immunity. They also reduce antimicrobial usage and minimize the risk of antimicrobial resistance. Vaccines Vaccines are prepared antigens to be used to prevent diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, mycoplasma, protozoa, and parasites.

Vaccination is an important component of preventive veterinary medicine and herd health. This chapter explains the practical role of vaccines in stimulating protective immunity and preventing important infectious diseases. Successful vaccination depends on appropriate vaccine selection, quality, handling, administration, timing and maintenance of the cold chain. Vaccination should form part of an integrated disease-control programme involving biosecurity, sanitation and disease monitoring. Species-specific vaccination schedules are presented for dogs, cats, cattle, buffaloes, small ruminants, swine and equines. The chapter provides practical guidance for implementing vaccination programmes and emphasizes appropriate scheduling and management to improve disease prevention and animal health.

In its original concept, vaccination aims to mimic the development of naturally acquired immunity by inoculation of nonpathogenic but still immunogenic components of the pathogen in question, or closely related organisms. The term “vaccine” (from the Latin term “vacca,” meaning cow) was first coined by Edward Jenner to describe the inoculation of humans with the cowpox virus to confer protection against the related human smallpox virus and illustrates the close relationship between human and animal infectious disease sciences. The famous proverb saying ‘Prevention is better than cure’ implies perfectly to the vaccines. Vaccines have proven to be boon for animals which can be regard a potential weapons against infectious diseases caused mainly by bacteria and viruses. The major aims of veterinary vaccines are to improve the health and welfare of companion animals, increase production of livestock in a cost-effective manner, and prevent animal-to-human transmission from both domestic animals and wildlife. Vaccines have long been used to combat infectious disease; however the last decade has witnessed a revolution in the approach to vaccine design and development. Apart from improving animal health and productivity, veterinary vaccines have a significant impact on public health through reductions in the use of veterinary pharmaceuticals and hormones and their residues in the human food chain.

DNA vaccines, also known as gene vaccines, are designed to transfer functional genes to target cells, allowing them to express functional proteins. Because endonucleases may easily access bare DNA, it requires a reliable and safe delivery route, which might be biological or non-biological. Different delivery strategies have been tried in human breast tumors to transport tumor antigens such Mucin-1 (MUC-1), Twist, HER-2, mammaglobin-1 and p53, as well as immunostimulatory molecules like IL-12 and IL-6. There have been various studies/ trials in canine animals using different molecules like IL-12, HER-2 and IFN-γ as vaccine candidates, with no clinically relevant outcomes or longlasting cell mediated and humoral immune response outcomes

A vacuum cleaner, also known as a sweeper or hoover, is a device that uses an air pump (a centrifugal fan in all but some of the very oldest models), to create a partial vacuum to suck up dust and dirt from fl oors and from other surfaces such as upholstery and draperies.The dirt is collected by either a dustbag or a cyclone for later disposal. Vacuum cleaners, which are used in homes as well as in industry, exist in a variety of sizes and models—small battery-powered hand-held devices, wheeled canister models for home use, domestic central vacuum cleaners, huge stationary industrial appliances that can handle several hundred litres of dust before being emptied, and self-propelled vacuum trucks for recovery of large spills or removal of contaminated soil.

Abstract

Drying is an age old practice of food preservation. Removal of moisture from the food materials is usually carried out at atmospheric pressure and elevated temperature. In the presence of oxygen, drying can cause oxidation of some compounds leading to quality deterioration. Drying at higher temperature adds to the losses and can be responsible for enzymatic and non enzymatic browning, loss of aroma, nutrients, antioxidants, pigments etc. On the other hand, drying under sub atmospheric pressure helps in retaining the themosensitive compounds present in natural foods as drying can be accomplished in oxygen free environment. Under vacuum, evaporation of moisture can be possible at lower temperatures.

There is ever increase in the demand for good quality food product with improved quality and shelf life. Over the years, packaging have brought out a revolution in the marketing and distribution of food products including fish. Among the food categories, seafood ranks 3^rd with respect to consumption which explains the importance of fish. Fish is a vital source of food for people. It is the most important single source of high-quality protein, providing approximately 16% of the animal protein consumed by the world’s population (Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), United Nations, 1997). By any measure, fishes are amoung the world’s most important natural resources. Annual exploitation from wild populations exceeds 90 million tones, and total annual trade exceeds $ US 55 billion. Additionally, with over 25000 known species, the biodiversity and ecological roles of fish are being increasingly recognized in aquatic conservation, ecosystem management, restoration and aquatic environmental regulation.

Like any other food commodities, fish is one of the highly perishable items which undergoes spoilage if sufficient care is not taken. Various preservation methods have been in place to overcome the spoilage of fish. Chilling and refrigeration is the most preferred preservation method as it helps in preserving fresh like quality. Chilling or icing is reducing the temperature of fish so as to prolong the lag phase of bacteria and helps in reducing the spoilage rate. Fish being one of the most perishable foods, its freshness is rapidly lost even when stored under chilled conditions. Further, consumers demands to have fish in as fresh a state as possible so that the characteristics flavours are retained. Bulk transportation of fresh fish in ice has several limitations like limited extension of shelf life, unnecessary expenditure on freight due to ice, difficulty in handling and maintaining hygienic conditions due to leaching of ice melt water with leaching losses of soluble nutrients and flavouring compounds. Proper packaging will help in improving the keeping quality of fish. Packaging is an important aspect for improving the shelf life and marketability. Packaging enhances the consumer acceptability and hence saleability of the product. Traditionally, food packaging is meant for protection, communication, convenience and containment. The package is used to protect the product from the deteriorative effects of the external environmental conditionals like heat, light, presence or absence of moisture, pressure, microorganisms, and gaseous emissions and so on. Packaging is an integral part of the food processing and plays an important role in preventing or reducing the generation of waste in the supply of food. Packaging assists the preservation of the world’s resources through the prevention of product spoilage and wastage, and by protecting products until they have performed their function. Basic requirements of a package are good marketing properties, reasonable price, technical feasibility, utility for food contact, low environmental stress, and suitability for recycling. Simply packing fish is suitable packaging material will enhance the shelf life of chilled and refrigerated fish to 7 to 15 days depending on fish species. However, in the normal packaging the spoilage process will be accelerated due to presence of O₂ in the normal air packing. Alteration in the package atmosphere will help in overcoming the problem of shelf life, which can be achieved by vacuum packaging or modified atmosphere packaging.

Vaginal prolapse in cow is a condition in which there is protrusion of whole or part of vagina including sometimes the part of cervix through the vulva. It occurs in cow mostly during last 2-3 months of gestation. It occurs due to excess secretion of estrogen from placenta, hypocalcaemia, inadequate exercise, bulky food like roughages etc. Sometimes occurs in non pregnant cows due to cystic ovaries, severe straining due to vaginal irritation etc.

1. Introduction

Valeriana jatamansi Jones is considered to be highly endangered medicinal plant found mainly in northern part of Himalayan region. Although it is also found in all temperate regions of world except in Australia (Jain, 1968; Polunin and Stainton, 1987; Bennet, 1987). It is grown in Himachal Pradesh, northern part of U.P., Sikkim and newly introduced in West Bengal Darjeeling region by us. It is enlisted in the endangered category by IUCN (Kaul and Honda, 2000) and it is enlisted as an endangered species in the national medicinal plant board, New Delhi (www.nmbp.nic.in). The plant was reported to be found in fragmented populations in different places of Kashmir Himalayan hilly region like Dara, Sonamarg, Harwan, Gulmarg, Ferozpur, Pahelgum, Yusmarg, Shajnar (Naqashi and Dar, 1982-86). It is found to be in the margin of extinction from the world though it is widespread in the temperate regions of whole world except Australia (Nayar and Sastri, 1998). Indiscriminate collection of rhizomes from the plants made potential threat of its existence in some previously founded localities (Wyatt, 1981; Nayar and Sastri, 1998; Airi et al, 2000; Nautiyal et al, 2003, CAMP, 2003).

ABSTRACT

Butea monosperma (Lam.) Taub, knownas ’Flameof the Forest’is used in Indian traditional system of medicine, such as Siddha Ayurveda, and Unani due to its medicinal properties. It is used in treatment of diabetes, diarrhoea, sore throat and reported to possess several biological activities such as anti-asthmatic, anti-diabetic, antifertility, anti-tumor and osteogenic. Recent studies revealed the phytochemicals responsible for osteogenic activity in the bark of B. monosperma. An ultra-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) method was developed for identification and simultaneous quantitation of bioactive compounds from B. monosperma. Validation of the developed method was performed according to international conference on harmonization guidelines. Quantitative interpretation showed significant variations in the content of bioactive compounds in different parts of the plant and samples collected from three geographical regions. Principal component analysis was also used to study the quantitative variations of markers.

Review of Health Claims

Regulators of different countries have different procedures and views to review health claims of traditional medicine, herbal medicines, botanicals, functional foods, nutraceuticals, health products, diatory supplements and such other natural forms of materials intended to use for health promotion. However, if such products carry any therapeutic or health benefit claims then the regulators may provide general guidance and demand for sufficient evidence base in support of such claims. For instance, U. S. Food and Drug Administration, Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) provides general guidance to review of health claims in functional foods and dietary supplements. Ethnopharmacological preparations involving herbal medicine and traditional medicines prepared from natural ingredients also will need similar process. The scientific review process for health claims of such products is comprehensive and mainly focuses on review of individual studies³²⁴

Validation of IDM technologies is ultimate test for IDM knitted with available technologies under ground realities of the field. Since IDM is multidisciplinary, multiorganizational and multi-locational participatory approach, involvement of all the stakeholders, including farmers and field technicians is to be ensured. Lanolin, commonly known as Wool grease is primarily a lipid secretion from sebaceous glands of wool bearing animals. The role of Lanolin in nature is to protect wool and skin of animal from climate and the environment. It is an excellent emollient, self-emulsifying and dermatological safe for skin applications. Lanolin is a complex matrix since it is a mixture of high molecularweight esters of fatty acids with fatty alcohols, sterols, tri-terpene alcohols; diesters, long-chain alcohols & diols, long-chain fatty acids and hydroxy acids and is therefore difficult for effective matrix clean-up. Because of its water proofing and antimicrobial properties, lanolin is used mainly in cosmetic and pharmaceutical applications.

Validation in the pharmaceutical and medical device industry is defined as the documented act ofdemonstrating that a procedure, process, and activity will consistently lead to the expected results. It often includes the qualification of systems and equipment. It is a requirement for Good Manufacturing Practices and other regulatory requirements. Since a wide variety ofprocedures, processes, and activities need to be validated, the field of validation is divided into a number of subsections including the following:

Reliability aims at assessing the accuracy and consistency of whatsoever the measuring instrument measures irrespective of whether we are measuring what we are supposed to measure or not. Whereas the validity emphasises on the question “are we measuring what we were supposed to measure?”

To clarify the difference between reliability and validity, let us take an example of instruments that measure colour intensity. Assume, an expert develops two separate instruments X and Y to measure the intensity of green and red colour, respectively. But, the commercial manufacturer wrongly tags the red colour measuring instrument as X. When someone uses this wrongly tagged instrument for measuring the green colour intensity, whatever intensity values the instrument yields are reliable but not valid. It is so because the instrument is measuring red colour intensity accurately (hence data is reliable) but it is not measuring what it was supposed to measure –the green colour intensity (hence data is not valid).

Validity : The degree to which a measurement actually measures or detects what it is supposed to measure.

Value added : This usually refers to firms, where it is defined as the value of the firm’s output minus the value of all its inputs purchased from other firms. It is therefore a measure of the profit earned by a particular firm plus the wages it has paid. As a rule, the more value a firm can add to a product, the more successful it will be. In many countries, the main form of indirect indirect taxation is value-added tax, which is levied on the value created at each stage of production. However, it is paid, ultimately, by whoever consumes the finished product. Another definition of value added refers to the change in the overall economic value of a company. This takes into account changes in the combined value of its shares, assets, debt and other liabilities. Part of the pay of company bosses is often linked to how much economic value is added to the company under their management.

Value at risk : Value at risk models, widely used for risk management by banks and other financial institutions, use complex computer algorithms to calculate the maximum that the institution could lose in a single day’s trading. These models seem to work well in normal conditions but not, alas, during financial crises, which is arguably when it is most necessary to know how much value is at risk.

Traditionally, these materials have been disposed of through open burning, landfilling, or natural decomposition, all of which release significant quantities of greenhouse gases and contribute to environmental degradation. Through processes such as pyrolysis, fermentation, and biochemical conversion, agri-biomass and organic waste can now be converted into biochar, bio-based chemicals, and sustainable biomaterials. Improper disposal methods, such as open burning or dumping, exacerbate these problems. Moreover, the resources invested in producing these wasted goods, such as water, energy, and land, are essentially squandered. From an economic standpoint, the mismanagement of agricultural and food wastes shows loss of potential value. These wastes could be utilized for various purposes, such as energy generation, composting, or animal feed, thus creating opportunities for economic growth and innovation. Food insecurity remains a pressing issue in many parts of the world, yet a substantial portion of food produced is lost or wasted. Redirecting these surplus resources to address hunger and malnutrition could have significant social benefits, enhancing food security and improving quality of life for millions. Incorporation of sustainable farming practices to minimize waste generation, improving harvesting and post-harvest techniques to reduce losses, promoting circular economy principles to maximize resource efficiency, and raising awareness among consumers about the importance of reducing food waste. Introduction
Glycerol, a colourless and odourless sweet viscous liquid, is a prominent member of the polyol family—compounds distinguished by their multiple alcohol groups. Chemically known as 1, 3-propanetriol and commonly referred to as glycerine, it contains three hydroxyl (-OH) groups, which contribute to its hygroscopic nature and chemical versatility. As an essential component of lipids, glycerol forms the structural backbone of fats and oils, underscoring its biological and chemical significance. Over the years, glycerol has transitioned from being a laboratory curiosity to becoming a cornerstone of modern industrial processes, thanks to its versatility and renewable sourcing (Zhu et al., 2024).
Modern Applications and Industrial Importance of Glycerol
1. Chemical Industry: As a versatile platform chemical glycerol supports the creation of acrolein, propylene glycol and polyhydroxyalkanoates derivatives. Catalytic transformations allow glycerol to produce glycerol carbonate which finds application in lubricants, solvents and polymer synthesis research (Aranda et al., 2009). Glycerol demonstrates essential functionality in the creation of hydrogen and syngas which results in more eco-friendly manufacturing methods.
2. Pharmaceuticals and Cosmetics: The humectant and lubricant properties of glycerol make it essential for pharmaceuticals and cosmetics where it maintains moisture in cough syrups, lozenges, and skin creams while improving texture. The medical derivative glycerol trinitrate provides essential treatment for angina pectoris which results in substantial therapeutic advantages (Binod et al., 2011).
3. Food Industry: Glycerol functions as a humectant and preservative, maintaining moisture in products like dried fruits, confectioneries, and beverages. In formulations free of sugar, it also serves as a sweetener (Awogbemi and Von Kallon, 2022).
4. Animal Feed: A economical energy source for cattle, crude glycerol, a biodiesel byproduct, helps sustainable agricultural methods (Mekunye and Makinde, 2024).
5. Energy and Environmental Sustainability: Glycerol is used in biogas development to improve methane yields and helps the development of bio refineries for converting waste glycerol into biofuels, lipids, and other sustainable chemicals (Peng et al., 2023).
6. Other Applications: Glycerol finds usage as a concrete addition for enhanced durability and in antifreeze compositions in the building and automobile industries. In printing, paper manufacture, and microbial fermentation techniques, it also finds roles as a plasticiser, lubricant, and carbon source (Solowski et al., 2020).

7.1 Introduction
Valorization in simple terms means to increase the value of a product, in economics it is usually through government and administrative actions. In the concept of waste management, it is defined as the process of reutilizing or making a new product of value from waste sources. Several kinds of wastes can be transformed into materials and energy of value, one such example is agricultural wastes. These agricultural wastes are eligible to be a base for manufacturing refined commodity (Capanoglu, Nemli and Tomas-Barberan, 2022) such as chemicals, adsorbents, pharmaceutical products, acids, chitosan, certain type of wax esters, pigments etc. or can be used in several industrial or domestic processes as an energy source, most commonly the production of bioethanol. Valorization greatly contributes to circular economy as materials are continuously renewed and reused, minimizing the need for virgin resources. By transforming agricultural wastes into value – added products, valorization helps to close the loop, ensuring that each by – product is put to use in an efficient, affordable and green way, thereby reducing the dependance on conventional waste management techniques such as landfills and incineration. Moreover, valorization has other benefits, including improved public health, development of newer industries in the material recovery and processing and waste management sector. It can also bring about social awareness about sustainable practices, fostering responsible consumption and waste disposal behaviors.
7.2 Types of Agricultural Wastes
Generally, agricultural wastes are organic. The most common types of agricultural wastes are biomass from rotten produce, crops, livestock carcasses, dead leaves, droppings from livestock and straws. These organic wastes have vast potential in being converted to value – added products through various methods without much additional treatment. Inorganic wastes such as heavy metals like Pb, Cu, Hg and Ba are also found in agricultural runoff containing pesticides, paints etc. Figure 7.1 (Omojola Awogbemi et al. 2022) provides various examples of agricultural wastes that are commonly used in the production of materials and energy.

ABSTRACT

Approximately 30 % of fruits and vegetables are getting wasted each year in country like India. Not only that, there is a huge loss of agro based commodity during industrial processing and will be considered as industry generated waste. Utilization of such unexplored nutrients from agro processing sectors for making a sustainable food system will be a healthy approach to bring food security and nutrition to all of us. With this aim the present work addresses the utilization of jackfruit seeds, an agro-waste, to value added products. Jackfruit seed flour has a great potential in new food formulation along with wheat flour. The 15% (w/w) blending of jackfruit seed flour with wheat flour could be used in bread and the substituted bread is protein and fibre enriched. This attempt in developing such bakery items with blended flours could address the scarcity problem of non-wheat producing countries. Present study also looks into the alternate source of starch from spice processing industries. The nutrient starch could be explored for isolation from a nonconventional source from turmeric processing sector. The isolated starch could also be modified to enhance some of its functional properties and may be utilized in preparing value added product with a better acceptability and nutrition.Thus, the isolation of nutrients and value-added products out of fruits and vegetables and spice-processing waste would be a stepping stone to an initiative to zero hunger.

Granite in the present day context is popularly known as the principal raw material in construction industry and also known for its value addition product as Dimension Stone in the global market. India is in pride possession of much sought granite varieties of the world. No doubt the demand for such granite varieties is quite high both for local and export markets but in reality the failure rate of granite quarries is also high, The technical reasons attributed for such failures being lack of application of proper scientific skill both in selection and mining ofgranite deposits. The past experience in the fieldof granite exploitation has thought us a lesson for application of geological knowledge in selection of right deposits and in adopting the right techniques. The selection criteria for construction purpose and for export market though looks simple, is more complicated in the case of dimension stone granite deposits, the reasons being the requirement of thorough knowledge in petrography,structure,geotechnical characters of the deposit. Considering the importance of the scientific knowledge, the present paper focuses on the various parameters for valuation of granite deposits. In other words, it emphasizes on arriving at a logical conclusion by applying the scientific knowledge in successful exploitation of the much valued granite deposits.

There is also an an increase in consumer demand for a variety of preparations to suit their taste and purse. Today’s commercial bakeries, food processing plants and institutions use tremendous quantities of liquid bulk eggs, egg solids (dried egg) and frozen egg products for preparation of several convenient foods.

Dry Flower Products

Dry flowers are aesthetically beautiful and they enhance the décor and liveliness of any room. They bring the fiery warmth and bounty of the season into the home with ease every fall. Much of fall’s beauty lies in the glorious changing colors of autumn leaves. These flowers are dried to use them in a wide range of products. Dried floral products are widely used for decoration and for adding zest to a room. Apart from that they are also used as an essential component of many products. They are widely used to make handmade paper, lampshades, candle holders, jute bags, photo frames, boxes, books, wall quilts, topiary, cards and several gifts. The use of dry flowers in the making of these products enhances the appearance and beauty of these products. They look sophisticated when gifted to someone or used as a décor of your own home.

Value addition is the most talked about word in food processing industry, particularly in export oriented fish processing industry because of the increased realization of valuable foreign exchange. Value can be added to fish and fishery products according to the requirements of different markets. These products range from live fish and shellfish to ready to serve convenience products. As far as fish processing industry is concerned value addition is one of the possible approaches to raise profitability since this industry is becoming highly competitive and increasingly expensive.

There is great demand for seafood/seafood based products in ready to eat “convenience” form. A number of such diverse products have already invaded the western markets. One factor responsible for such a situation is more and more women getting educated and taking up employment. Reasonably good expendable income, education, awareness and consciousness towards hygiene and health, increased emphasis on leisure pursuits etc. are some of the other reasons.

Marketing of value added products is completely different from the traditional seafood trade. It is dynamic, sensitive, complex and very expensive. Market surveys, packaging and advertising are a few of the very important areas, which ultimately determine the successful movement of a new product. Most of the market channels currently used is not suitable to trade value added products. A new appropriate channel would be the super market chains which want to procure directly from the source of supply. Appearance, packaging and display are all important factors leading to successful marketing of any new value added product. The retail pack must be clean, crisp and clear and make the contents appear attractive to the consumer. The consumer must be given confidence to experiment with a new product launched in the market. Packaging requirements change with product form, target group, market area, species used and so on. The latest packaging must also keep abreast with the latest technology.

Abstract

Mango pulp is high in prebiotic dietary fibers vitamin c, polyphenols, carotenoids, vitamins and dietary minerals. Mint leaves are known for its medicinal aromatic and flavorsome qualities. Mint act as powerful antioxidant, protecting the body against the formation of cancerous cells and is rich source of polyphenolic compounds. Tulsi also have antioxidant, adaptogenic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and immune-enhancing properties. Honey is natural sweetener and has antiseptic and antibacterial properties. Medicinally, honey is non irritant promote rapid growth of healthy tissue and is useful in purities value, bed spores, skin and intestinal disorder, etc. Keeping in mind the beneficial effects of these raw materials, attempt was made to prepare value added drink from it, which may have medicinal value and good sensory acceptability with objective to prepare and evaluate the recipe for value added green mango-mint-tulsi beverage and to study the shelf life of the developed value added beverage. The formulation prepared with partial substitution of honey was more acceptable. Throughout the storage period, the squash prepared with honey scored more in flavor, taste, mouth-feel and overall acceptability than without honey. The cost of production without including labour, bottling and other overhead charges came out to be Rs. 34.5/L for squash without honey and Rs. 59.0/L for squash without honey.
