The arid zone eco-system of Rajasthan is very fragile and is prone to serious imbalance even with the slightest disturbance due to mismanagement of resources. Among the eastern margin of the mean annual rainfall is 500 mm, while in the western most part it is 100 mm. The rainfall is monsoon driven. It comes between June and September (in 9-21 short spells). Large coefficient of variation (40-60%) and erratic distribution during the monsoon are characteristics features of the rainfall, leading often to prolong drought and failure of rainfed crops (More and Samadia, 2007). Temperature as low as 4.4° C, and as high as 50° C has been recorded in Western Rajasthan. Farming system and cropping system approach for sustainable use of farm resources and reduced risks have been successfully demonstrated in perennial horticulture. There is great pressure of livestock on available feed and fodder, as land available for fodder production has been decreasing. The requirement of dry and green fodder by 2025 would be 1170 mt and 650 mt while supply is expected around 411.3 mt and 488 mt deficit will be 64.87 % green fodder and 24.92 % dry fodder (Table 1).

1.1 Introduction

In the contemporary context, women's empowerment in rural India holds immense significance. These women fulfil critical roles as farmers, wage earners, and entrepreneurs, all while managing family responsibilities such as providing food and caring for children and older people. Despite their vital contributions, rural women face entrenched challenges, including gender based discrimination, societal norms, and unequal access to education, healthcare, property, and financial services. The burden of unpaid work, particularly prevalent in economically disadvantaged households, further compounds these obstacles. Notably, women from indigenous and grassroots communities contribute significantly to their communities’ livelihoods and serve as custodians of traditional knowledge essential for cultural preservation.

By directly manipulating plant genomes, scientists can introduce specific traits with greater accuracy and speed, leading to significant improvements in crop quality and productivity. This chapter explores the protocols and methodologies employed in plant genetic engineering aimed at enhancing the quality of crops, providing insights into the techniques that have transformed agricultural practices.
The importance of plant genetic engineering cannot be overstated. With the global population projected to reach nearly 10 billion by 2050, the agricultural sector must find ways to increase food production while ensuring sustainability and environmental conservation (Tilman et al., 2011). Conventional breeding methods, which rely on the natural variation present in plant populations, can be slow and imprecise. In contrast, genetic engineering allows for the targeted introduction of desirable traits, such as disease resistance, improved nutritional content, and enhanced stress tolerance (Gurian-Sherman, 2009). These advancements are crucial for maintaining food security in the face of growing environmental challenges.

Limonium, commonly known as statice, is an important cut and dried flower valued for its attractive inflorescences and excellent keeping quality. This chapter covers its origin, taxonomy, botanical features, varieties and commercial significance. It discusses climate, soil, propagation, planting, irrigation, nutrient management and crop protection. Harvesting at the correct flowering stage, immediate hydration, cold storage and floral preservatives are emphasized for maintaining quality. The chapter also provides commercial grading standards for varieties such as Misty Blue, Saffron and Glow, along with yield information. These practices support both domestic and export production of high-quality Limonium stems.

Food, clothing and housing are the three basic needs of a man. After that the additional requirement of a man are personal health and happiness. These can be considered as human factors. The material factors are agriculture, industry, trade, water resources management, insurance.

The continuous increase in population made the planners, researchers and cultivators to increase the food production to feed all the people. So, the second green revolution has to follow. Due to increase in air temperature and climate change, the cultivation practices to change based on the changing climatic condition. The study of climate is not only necessary for food production, but also needed for transportation, storage, value addition and consumption.

The need of the cloth for man is not only for style. The basic need is to protecting the human body from the climatic factors like heat and cold. Clothing must provide to maintain the body heat at about 37^oC. Clothing must be made based on the local climatic condition. So, the traditional fiber for making the cloth is better for health.

Housing provides the internal controlled climate to the human being. It provides comfort to the inhabitants. Like clothing traditional styles, sites and methods of housing have to be followed based on the climatic condition. Though people are living in the multi-storied building, they have to concentrate on comfort in the case of sufficient aeration and ventilation. In India, the Vastu Sastrum is nothing, but it provides the needs of the human livings for their comfort with sufficient light and air.

The climatic factors for a particular day are not similar to previous day. Similarly, definitely the climate of one season is not similar to other season. Man needs some recreation in the comfort climatic areas. So, he/she needs cool climate for stay that necessitate to air conditioner particularly during summer.

Abstract

Designer foods are known by various names like medical foods, fortified foods, nutritional foods, nutraceutical foods, pharma foods etc. These foods are nutritious, maintain health and prevent diseases. Such foods must possess characteristics like modified composition; limit the presence of certain potentially harmful components and include certain desirable ingredients either naturally or by intentional addition. The term designer food emerged some years ago to describe foods tailored to specific concentration and proportion of nutrients that are important to health. These are designed and produced by using different approaches. The term ‘designer foods’ is subjected to change based on nutritional labelling regulations, new developments, consumer perceptions and expectations. Grain improvement through biotechnology emphasizes crop upgrading with a specific challenge to manipulate the endosperm composition in order to improve its intrinsic properties for diet and health. Breeding fruits with higher bioactive compounds for disease resistance and improved composition have stimulated interest in the nutraceutical and processing aspects of the fruits Nutritive and genetic interventions to alter milk composition for specific health and processing opportunities are gaining importance in dairy biotechnology. Designer eggs having modified fat provide choices with different nutritional benefits. The options suggested for designer meat and meat products are through production practices, post-harvest procedures and reformulation techniques. All these features of designer foods will be presented with suitable examples.

Henna or Mehandi (Lawsonia inermis L.) a perennial shrub belongs to family Lythraceae. It is commonly cultivated as a commercial dye crop possess natural dyeing properties and are used for hair dyeing and for staining of palm, feet and other body parts since times immemorial. The plant finds their importance due to presence of orange red dye in its leaves and essential oil in its flower. Oil extracted from leaves and flower called ‘Otto of henna’ which is utilized as perfume (Jaimini et al., 2005). It can grow well in harsh climate of arid and semiarid regions. In India, over 90 percent of the henna production comes from Sojat region of Pali district of Rajasthan and Sojat is only center for its processing and trading in India. In India it occupies about 40,000 ha area out of which 35,000 ha alone is in Pali district (Sojat and adjoining tehsils).

Geographical distribution

It occurs naturally in North Africa mainly in countries of Algeria, Cyprus, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Morocco, Oman, Philippines, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syrian Arab Republic, Tanzania, Tunisia, Turkey, Sahara and Yemen. It is naturally occurring in many of these countries along the water courses and semi-arid regions where it can with stand dryness as well as drought. It has been introduced into countries like Australia, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central Africa, Chad, Congo, China, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, India, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Spain, Sudan, Togo and Zanzibar (Suresh Kumar et al., 2005).

This practical assignment is conceptualized and operationalized to understand various tools and techniques in conducting a PRA at the village level and help students in understanding their application in village development planning.

Introduction

Many of the globe’s major food crops viz., wheat, rice and vegetables have reached “yield stagnation” or “yields plateau”. This can be attributed to the land degradation and soil diminishing capacity to supply nutrients at the required rate due to over mining of essential nutrients. Further, imbalance use of fertilizers and lesser use of organic manures over the years have badly affected the soil health. To bring back life to the soil and relieve it from nutrient stress; fertilizers and manures/bio-fertilizers have to be applied in a scientific manner. At the same time, their indiscriminate use can result either in their under utilization and toxicity or leaching to the lower horizons, leading to underground water and create pollution problems. The soil is also the main source of sixteen mineral elements identifies in view of their importance for plant growth. These are N, P, K, S, Ca, Mg, Na, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Mo and Cl (Tisdale et al., 1985). Nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus have been designated as major nutrient elements in order of their removal by the plant; sulphur, calcium and magnesium as secondary nutrients while zinc, copper, iron, manganese and molybdenum are called micro nutrients as these are taken by plant in traces. 
Nutrients need of vegetables depends upon the yield response to applied nutrients from fertilizers, agro-climatic conditions, variety and nutrient availability from the soil pool. The nutrient status of the soil further depends upon the quantity of total and available nutrients present in the soil pool. The soil tests helps in selecting the proper manuring schedule for various crops in a sequence by knowing about the nutrient build up or depletion in the soil profile. The adequacy of soil testing methods to correctly predict the fertilizer needs varies with the soil type, climate/soil moisture and crop species. The rainfall also influences the efficiency of soil testing methods, especially nitrogen and potassium when it becomes imperative to have tissue analysis for modify the fertilizer recommendations. Plant tests also help to identify the nutrient deficiency in standing crop and in the event of deficiency of a particular nutrient helps in taking corrective measures (Sud 
et al., 2008).

• Better understand the monohybrid cross.
• Calculation of monohybrid phenotypic, genotypic and testcross ratios.

Principle

Monohybrid cross deals with the study of inheritance of one pair of contrasting characters. The alleles of contrasting character selected in the monohybrid cross will show exact dominance and recessive relationship. It is also defined as a cross is made between two true-breeding parents differing for a single trait, producing an F₁ generation. These plants are intercrossed to produce an F₂ generation. Monohybrid crosses study led to the Mendel’s law of segregation. Monohybrid cross was first produced in pea by Mendel to explain the “law of segregation”. When parents with distinct phenotypes are crossed, in F₁ generation, only one type of plants appears phenotypically. However, segregation can be observed in F₂ progeny and the population can be divided into two phenotypes classes. After counting the individuals. It is observed that 75% of them express the dominant phenotype and 25% of them express recessive phenotype.

Canning : Process of preservation of various food stuffs including fruits and vegetables whole or in pieces, in sugar syrup or brine by heat processing them in hermetically sealed containers.

HORTICULTURAL CLASSIFICATION OF PLANTS

The Horticultural crops are majorly classified on the basis of its consumption and uses as fruits, vegetables, flowers, spices, medicinal, aromatic and plantation crops. Moreover, these crops have been further classified into various groups on the basis of their habitat, growth pattern, edapho-climatic requirements and uses. All branches of horticulture classified specifically as hereunder:

A Classification of fruits

1. Based on Climatic adaptability
   1. Tropical fruits: These fruit crops are grown in tropical climatic regions which are geographically located between the parallels of 23° 27' South (Tropic of Capricorn) and 23° 27' North (Tropic of the Cancer) of the equator. They are generally evergreen and very sensitive to cold. Eg. Mango, Pineapple, Banana, Papaya, Citrus, Sapota, Avocado etc.
   2. Sub-tropical fruits: Fruit crops are grown in between temperate and tropical climatic regions. They may be either deciduous or evergreen nature. Eg. Mango, guava, citrus, durian, jackfruit, bread fruit etc.

Pure sugar when heated melts at about 160-1800c. at about 2100c sucrose loses water and becomes caramel.

Bihar lies in the river plains of the basin of the river Ganga. It is endowed with fertile alluvial soil ground water resources. This makes the agriculture of Bihar rich and diverse. Bihar is one of the major producers of fruits in India with 6.7 percent of national production respectively. It ranks sixth among other States in the production of fruits respectively. The development of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) was a response to the steadily increasing use of pesticides, which led to crises in pest control (outbreaks of secondary pests and pest resurgence following the development of pesticide resistance), as well as an increase in evidence and awareness of the full costs that the intensive use of pesticides imposes on human health and the environment. The term “Integrated Pest Management” (IPM) refers to the process of carefully considering all of the available methods of pest management and then subsequently incorporating suitable strategies that prevent the growth of pest populations. It integrates biological, chemical, physical, and crop-specific (cultural) management tactics and practices in order to cultivate healthy crops and avoid the use of pesticides. This helps to reduce or eliminate the hazards that pesticides cause to human health and the environment, which is essential for sustainable pest control. IPM is a dynamic process that makes use of an ecological systems approach and encourages the user or producer to examine and employ the complete range of optimal pest management choices available given economic, environmental, and social factors. IPM is accomplished via the use of an ecological systems approach. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is founded on ecology, the idea of ecosystems, and the objective of maintaining ecosystem processes. Additionally, it stimulates the use of natural pest management techniques, which in turn promotes the establishment of a healthy crop while causing the least amount of damage to agroecosystems as feasible.

Gene Regulation before delving into gene regulation, it’s essential to understand the concept of gene action. Gene action encompasses the expression of a particular trait or phenotype by a gene. This expression hinges on the synthesis of a specific protein encoded by the gene, followed by the protein’s involvement in a metabolic or biosynthetic pathway leading to the manifestation of the phenotype. The sequence of events in phenotype production may, therefore, be written as follows: DNA → RNA → Protein → Phenotype (Griffiths et al., 2000).
In molecular terms, gene action refers to the production of an RNA transcript from the gene (Lewin, 2004).
Gene Regulation
Gene regulation is the process by which cells control the amount of protein or RNA produced by a gene, either increasing or decreasing its production as needed (Alberts et al., 2014). Different tissues in eukaryotes produce varying sets of proteins and enzymes tailored to their specific requirements.

Among these, climate change looms as the most pressing, threatening to disrupt global food security. With rising temperatures, erratic rainfall patterns, and increasing incidences of droughts and floods, agricultural productivity is under severe strain. Global crop yields are forecasted to decline by up to 25% in some regions if climate change remains unchecked (IPCC, 2021; Lobell et al., 2011). At the core of climate-resilient agriculture lies the ability to breed crops capable of withstanding environmental stresses. This chapter aims to explore how climate-resilient breeding is the future of agriculture. We will review the potential of genomics-assisted breeding (GAB), advances in CRISPR/Cas genome editing, the exploitation of crop biodiversity, and the integration of automated technologies for the development of resilient crops (FAO, 2019; Tester & Langridge, 2010).
Climate Change and its Impact on Agriculture
1. Temperature Stress: One of the most direct impacts of climate change on agriculture is the rise in global temperatures. Many crops, such as rice, wheat, and maize, are highly sensitive to heat stress, particularly during their flowering and grain-filling stages. Studies have shown that a 1°C increase in temperature can result in a 10-20% reduction in yields for several crops (Wheeler et al., 2020). For instance, wheat production could decrease by 6% for every degree of temperature rise (Asseng et al., 2015). Additionally, high temperatures increase evapotranspiration, leading to water deficits and worsening drought conditions in many regions (Boyer, 1982).

Indian agriculture was contributing 70% to total GDP of the country at pre-independent time, but it decreased drastically year by year and contributed 66.8% in 1960, 55.6% in 1994, 27.1% in 1997 and now a days, it reached only to 25% in 2001. With the advancement of civilization our population is increased, whereas, the cultivable lands is decreased side by side, thus, on an average income of agriculture is decreased.

Gujarat is the leading state to concern with the productivity, production and the area of the some crops like Groundnut, Castor, Cotton, etc. in India. The major part of the state is surrounded by sea coast border, which is 1600 km. Gujarat is popular for production of oilseed crops like groundnut, cotton ; horticultural crops like mango, chiku, coconut, banana, papaya, citrus; spices crops like chili, cumin, funnel etc.
