All lagomorphs (meaning ìhare-shapedî) are small to medium-sized terrestrial herbivores. They superficially resemble rodents and in older classifications were even included in the order Rodentia, as both possess a set of continuously growing incisor teeth. It is now recognized that these two orders have long separate evolutionary histories.

Introduction
Salt-affected soils (SAS) can be found across different latitudes, exhibiting variations in morphology, biology, and chemical, physical, and physicochemical properties (Gupta and Gupta, 2017). Despite their diversity, SAS share a common characteristic: the dominant role of soil solution electrolytes in the soil formation process, leading to properties that create unfavorable conditions for the normal growth of most plants (Szabolcs, 1989). In cases where SAS develop due to natural geomorphological processes, certain plant species, known as halophytes, have evolved specialized physiological adaptations to survive in these environments. Halophytes are capable of thriving in highly saline habitats by effectively managing the stress caused by excessive salt. Plants growing in such conditions employ various adaptive mechanisms to tolerate and flourish despite the salinity challenge. Salt-affected soils (SAS) require specialized management strategies to mitigate the challenges posed by high salinity levels. Plants and organisms in these ecosystems have evolved various adaptations to manage salt levels, such as developing specialized root structures, eliminating or containing excess salt, and efficiently absorbing water and nutrients (Flowers and Colmer, 2015). Despite their typically low alpha-diversity, SAS ecosystems contribute significantly to beta-diversity due to the specialization of organisms that thrive in such challenging environments. However, many of these high-value ecological systems have been severely degraded worldwide as a result of various political and economic decisions. For example, mangroves in countries like Thailand, Vietnam, Mexico, and Ecuador have been destroyed to make way for shrimp farming (FAO, 2007). Sabkhas around the Mediterranean coast have suffered from overexploitation of the aquifers that sustain them, and the reduction of water flow to closed drainage basins, such as in the case of the Aral Sea, has occurred due to water being diverted for irrigation, especially for cotton farming. Further degradation is seen in the transformation of SAS wetlands into agricultural fields through drainage, a practice observed in many regions (Mitsch and Gosselink, 2007). Hi Tech horticulture is synonymous to cultivation of commercial horticultural crops using advanced scientific technology to make more profit. India is acclaimed globally for production of high value horticultural crops but there productivity is less as compared to many countries. One of the main reasons for low productivity is poor water and nutrient management. The Task Force on Agricultural Development constituted by the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog, Government of India in March 2015 has suggested to increase productivity, progress is required along three dimensions: (i) Quality and judicious use of inputs such as water, seeds, fertilizer and pesticides; (ii) judicious and safe exploitation of modern technology; and (iii) shift into high value commodities such as fruits, vegetables, flowers, etc. (Anonymous, 2015).  Hi tech horticulture meeting the entire requirement as suggested by the task force.

Bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is one of the most widely cultivated and consumed crops in the world. Wheat is perhaps best known for its different end-use baking properties as determined by grain texture, protein content and quality. Wheat is generally traded by and classified into “hard” and “soft” market classes on the basis of grain hardness or texture of the wheat kernel (caryopsis). Soft wheats have softer endosperm texture that fractures easily, therefore requiring less energy to mill, yields smaller particles, and has less starch damage after milling when compared to hard wheats. Hard and soft are used with slightly different connotations in different parts of the world. In Western Europe, hard is applied primarily to durum wheats and the soft applied to bread wheat. Elsewhere the term is applied to different cultivars within the species Triticum aestivum. In general, hard wheats are used for bread baking, while soft wheats are used for cookies and cake making. Hard wheat requires more force to crack the kernel, maintains a larger particle size, passes through sieves more easily and has more damaged starch MacRitchie (1980). Higher starch damage is required for good bread making quality Tipples et al. (1994) but is detrimental to the biscuit making quality.

Indian Agriculture has made enormous strides in the past 50 years, raising foodgrains production from 50 million tonnes to over 200 million tonnes.  In the process, the country has progressed from a situation of food shortages and imports to one of surpluses and exports.  Having achieved food sufficiency, the aim now is to achieve food and nutritional security at the household level.

The increase in agricultural production, however, has brought in its wake, uneven development, across regions, crops, and also across different sections of farming community.  In the decade of the ‘nineties’, a marked slackening in the pace of growth has occurred, pointing to the need for infusing a new vitality in the agricultural sector.

Abstract

The state of Tamil Nadu has a low easterly gradient slope and there are number of rivers, big and small originate from the west flow towards east south easterly and confluence the Bay of Bengal. These were grouped into seventeen major and minor river basins, the Cauvery being the largest basin and the river is also a near perennial river. These river basins receive rainfall both from the southwest and northeast monsoons. The state has over 40,000 surface water bodies and number of major dams and reservoirs. Even then, since the rainfall of the north east monsoon, the major source of water source to these basins, occurs in short span of few days with high rainfall, neither adequate storage is there to store them nor the recharge possibility is available, thus all leading to flooding and wastage. The 40,000 and odd water bodies are heavily silted and polluted too. The paper provides an over view of all these, basin wise, and in addition, strongly advocates intra state river linkage and improvised irrigation management as the best option to save the state from its water deficiency.

Abstract

The present investigation was carried out in okra consisting of 11 diverse genotypes (8 lines & 3 testers) and their 24 F1 hybrids. Phenotypic and genotypic correlation indicated positive association of average fruit length with average fruit weight while negative association between days taken to first flower with number of fruits per plant. The maximum positive direct effect on yield was due to number of fruits per plant followed by average fruit weight. The F₁ hybrid VRO-6 × Parbhani Kranti exhibits highest negative heterobeltiosis for days taken to 1^st flowering while D-1-87-5 × Pusa A-4 and Arka Abhay × Parbhani Kranti are earliest heterobeltiotic hybrids for days taken to 1st harvest. The hybrid Arka Abhay × Pusa A-4 represents highest heterobeltiosis for average fruit length, number of fruits/ plant and average yield. Among all parents, only Akra Abhay exhibits better GCA effect. The highest SCA effect for average yield observed in VRO-6 × Arka Anamika, while VRO-6 × Pusa A-4 for per cent infestation of YVMV. The cross Arka Abhay × Pusa A-4 incurred the highest net returns/ ha and B: C ratio (3.21) followed by that of D-1-87-5 × Parbhani Kranti and the parent Hisar Unnat gave the higher net returns/ ha with B: C ratio of 2.02 among the parents. These elite hybrids may be tested for yield and other quality traits under different agro-climatic conditions for commercial exploitation of hybrid vigour.

History and Epidemics
In France downy mildew is called as “le mildiou” while in Germany it is called as “falscher Meltau”. Downy mildew is undoubtedly of American origin and was probably indigenous on the wild grapes of the eastern United States, from which it spread to the cultivated vineyards when these were established by the colonists. It was not known to occur outside America until 1870, although it was first described from this country as early as 1834. In the early part of the last century various horticultural writers referred to the destructive action of the mildew on cultivated grapes.
Its history in Europe dates back to the time when French vine-yards were suffering from the grape Phylloxera, an aphid insect pest that was also introduced into Europe from America. It was found that rootstocks of the American species were more resistant to this aphid than was the European vinifera grape, and therefore consequently around 1870 importations of the American Vines were made into Europe, and somewhere around 1875 the downy mildew fungus evidently was also introduced with these importation and became established, and by 1878 it was prevalent enough to cause alarm. Since the European vinifera grapes were far more susceptible to this disease than were the American species, it soon became a real menace to grape culture throughout the humid sections of Europe.

In some developing countries, milk from horses (Equus caballus) and donkeys (Equus asinus) is an essential food for poor farmers. Generally, horses are more commonly used for dairy purposes in cool areas and donkeys in dry semi-arid regions. Milking equines is time-consuming and has to be repeated five or six times a day. In addition, an equine will not release milk unless it is stimulated by the presence of its foal. Mare’s milk is commonly consumed in the steppe areas of Central Asia, where a traditional lactic-alcoholic beverage called koumiss is produced through fermentation. Horse milk is also an important source of animal protein for pastoralists in Mongolia. The consumption of donkey milk has become very marginal. In some African communities, donkey milk is consumed for medical purposes.

Equus is a genus of mammals in the family Equidae, which includes horses, asses, and zebras. Within the Equidae, Equus is the only recognized existing genus, comprising seven living species. Like Equidae more broadly, Equus has numerous extinct species recognized only from fossils. Equines are odd-toed ungulates with slender legs, long heads, relatively long necks, manes (erect in most subspecies), and long tails. All species are herbivorous, and mostly grazers, with simpler digestive systems than ruminants but able to subsist on lower-quality vegetation. The chromosome number of a horse is 64 (2n).

• Pathogen infects the seedlings and produces small reddish circular spots on the cotyledons and primary leaves.
• Lesions develop on the collar region, stem may be girdled, causing seedling to wilt and die.
• In mature plants, the fungus attacks the stem, leading to stem splitting and shredding of bark.
• Most common symptom is boll spotting. Small water soaked, circular, reddish brown depressed spots appear on the bolls.
• The lint is stained to yellow or brown, becomes a solid brittle mass of fiber.The infected bolls cease to grow and burst and dry up prematurely(Fig-2).

Water is most essential thing to sustain life for plants, human and animals. In fact, land and water are the two important natural resources, which play an important role in horticulture production. Irrigation is the lifeline for any crop production. As Pomegranate is mostly grown under water scarce regions of India, so utilization of available water more effective and efficient irrigation system is need along micro-irrigation system offers the way of using water in a most judicious fashion for irrigation purpose. It is based on the elementary concept on irrigating root zone rather than entire land surface which results in higher water use efficiency and improved crop yield. This technique is now being used to mitigate water scare situation in the pomegranate growing regions of the country in enormous way.

Watershed management has emerged as an important research area in recent years. Understanding the morphology of the catchment is one of the widely used methods for watershed management. Morphometry is the measurement and mathematical analysis of the configuration of the earth’s surface, shape, and dimension of its landforms (Agarwal 1998; Obi Reddy et al., 2002). The study of watershed is very useful in drainage basin evaluation, silt erosion control, flood frequency analysis, watershed prioritization, natural resources management, and conservation (Waikar and Nilawar, 2014). The significance of morphometric analysis is highlighted in the basins that are either un-gauged or difficult to access. The morphometry is usually analyzed through measurement of linear, aerial, relief, gradient of channel network, and contributing ground slope of the basin (Magesh et al., 2012). The hydrological behavior of a basin can be easily determined through the areal parameters (Mahala, 2020.) The evolutionary history of any basin can be best understood through the implication of different relief morphometric measures of drainage basin (Sharma and Sarma, 2013).

GIS and RS techniques are proven convenient methods for morphometric characterization of sub-watersheds and prioritization of watersheds. As the satellite images provide a synoptic view of a large area, the RS and GIS methods become very useful in the analysis of drainage basin morphometry (Rai et al., 2017). Thus, the morphometric analysis using spatial techniques has emerged to be the fast and efficient method as compared to most of the conventional methods (Rao et al., 2010) such as manual extraction of drainage network and assigning the stream order from a published Survey of India topographic map. The present study aims at using remote sensing and GIS technology to compute various parameters of morphometric characteristics of the Chaliyar River basin.

Phytochemistry

Pytochemistry is concerned with enormous variety of organic substances that are elaborated and accumulated by plants and deals with chemical structures of these substances and biosynthesis, and their natural distribution and biological function. Chemical constituents of plants can be classified in different ways. Based on biosynthetic origin, solubility properties and presence of certain key functional groups, it is classified as phenolic compounds, substances that are readily recognized by their hydrophilic nature and by their common origin from aromatic precursor shikimic acid. Terpenoids share lipid properties and a biosynthetic origin from isopentenyl pyrophosphate (Fig. 1). Organic acids, lipids, alkenes and related hydrocarbons, polyacetylenes and sulphur compounds are derived biosynthetically from acetate. Nitrogen compounds of plants like amino acids, amines, alkaloids, cynogenic glycosides, indoles, purines, pyramidines and cytokinins and chlorophyll are basic substances recognized by their positive responses to either ninhydrin or Dragendorff reagent. Monosaccharides, oligosaccharides, sugar alcohols and cyclitols are water-soluble carbohydrates and their derivatives. Macromolecules of plants such as nucleic acids, proteins and polysaccharides are easily separated from other constituents by their high molecular weights (Harborne, 1984). Flowers speak millions of unspoken words. Presenting a bouquet and making arrangements with flowers in most of the drawing rooms, offices, hotels and hospitals have become the style of the day in the fast – moving modern world where there is hardly any time for exchange of sweet memories. Since time immemorial, the importance of such a delicate creation of nature has always been appreciated. Tamil Nadu ranks first among the flower producing states of India, contributing 25% of the country’s flower production with an area of 31, 970 ha under flowers. Of this, around 700 ha are under protected cut flower cultivation. In Nilgiri district alone, it has an area of around 70 ha under protected cut flower production which is inclusive of around 11.2 ha of lilium.

The genus Lilium (Lilium spp.) is a herbaceous flowering plant normally grown from bulbs, about 110 species world over belongs to lily family Liliaceae. It is native of the northern temperate regions. The species in this genus are the true lilies while the other plants with lily in the common name are related to the other groups of plants. Lilies are usually erect leafy stemmed herbs. The majority of species form tunicless scaly underground bulbs from which they produce flowers. The large flowers have three petals along with three sepals, look like petals.

Species composition of birds in an area is related to the type of vegetation, height above the sea level, the availability of microhabitats and various other factors. The study site at Silent Valley covered all the representative habitats namely forest canopy, forest interior, forest edge, rocky patches, grass patches and foliage air interface met within a tropical forest. Riparian patches were excluded after an initial survey as it contained only a few species of forest birds. The Mukkali study site covered moist deciduous forest, burned forests, coffee estate, open rocky areas and agricultural land. Common species, Dominant species and Species richness of the two study areas were assessed and the data are presented in this chapter.

An animal’s asymmetry in aggression towards another species is commonly used to characterise its dominance. In other contexts, dominance describes people who emerge victorious from brief dyadic competitions. Most animal groups are arranged in a hierarchical fashion, whereby members at higher ranks have more access to resources and opportunity for procreation than members at lower ranks. Signals of Dominance: Acts or structures known as signals are employed by signalers to convey information to recipients in a way that elicits a response from them. This response usually has positive fitness consequences for both the signaler and the recipient. These signs don’t always have to be easy to see.
Communities vary in the hierarchical pattern of dominance. The most common kind of rank relationships are those in which there is a “alpha” who is better than all other members of the group, a “beta” who is better than all members except the “alpha,” and so on down the hierarchy to the lowest ranker who is under all others. Therefore, if powerful males may be arranged in a single sequence, the system is known as a simple and linear dominance hierarchy.
