Introduction
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) constitutes a profound global health crisis, jeopardizing the efficacy of antibiotics and posing a severe threat to the foundation of modern medical practice. The rise of multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens, which exhibit resistance to multiple classes of antibiotics, has significantly escalated the global burden of infectious diseases, complicating treatment protocols and increasing morbidity and mortality rates. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), AMR could lead to 10 million deaths annually by 2050 if current trends continue, accompanied by economic losses projected to reach trillions of dollars due to prolonged hospitalizations, increased healthcare costs, and reduced productivity. The traditional antibiotic development pipeline has stagnated, hampered by scientific complexities, high financial costs, and stringent regulatory frameworks, resulting in a critical shortage of novel antimicrobial agents. This necessitates the exploration of innovative strategies to combat AMR and preserve the utility of existing antibiotics. Among these strategies, Crispr-Cas (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats and Crispr-associated proteins) systems have emerged as a groundbreaking gene-editing platform with transformative potential for addressing AMR. Initially identified as a bacterial adaptive immune mechanism, Crispr-Cas has been repurposed to enable precise targeting of genetic elements, offering novel therapeutic, diagnostic, and environmental solutions. This chapter provides a comprehensive analysis of Crispr-Cas systems in the context of AMR, exploring their molecular mechanisms, diverse applications, current limitations, and future prospects across clinical, agricultural, and environmental domains. By leveraging the precision and programmability of Crispr-Cas, researchers aim to develop targeted interventions that mitigate the spread of resistance while minimizing collateral damage to beneficial microbial communities.

Introduction Data analytics is a systematic analysis of data or statistics. It is also the process of collecting, cleaning, transforming, interpreting, modelling and visualization the data. Such transformed data has to be further investigated to retrieve helpful information that may help conclude and support decision making. This study presents revising selected two relative valuation models (PE Model, PB Model) by replacing the most non-significant variables used in the model with the critical variable that is the potential cause for improving the model’s performance. The objective of relative valuation is to value assets based on how similar assets are priced in the market. This paper measures the valuation accuracy using Root Mean Squared Errors and refine the relative valuation models using the machine learning algorithm for predicting the value of a stock. The following steps helped to revise and refine the PE Model, PB model (Relative valuation models) to predict the value of Sensex stocks.

Abstract

Agroforestry is an ancient practice that farmers have adopted throughout the world. There are innumerable examples of traditional land use practices combining production of trees and agriculture crops on the same piece of land. In India, the organized agroforestry research began in 1979 when a Seminar on Agroforestry was organized at Imphal by the ICAR, New Delhi. As a follow up to this, ICAR launched an All India Co-ordinated Research Project on Agroforestry (AICRPAF) was started in 1983. The diagnostic survey and appraisal revealed that there are enumerable agroforestry practices prevalent in different agro- ecological zones of India occupying sizeable areas. However, spatial technologies like Geographical Information System (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographical Positioning System (GPS) have yet to be implemented extensively in this field in India. The spatial technologies have shown great potential in natural resource management through out the world, especially in developed countries in the fields like forest cover mapping, agricultural planning, watershed management, land use planning, etc. In India the agroforestry land use occupy large areas but use of these technologies to estimate area has been initiated in year 2007 with DST sponsored project entitled ‘Spatial and Temporal analysis of agroforestry interventions in North-western India using GIS and Remote Sensing’ The area under agroforestry systems has been estimated/ mapped in two districts viz., Yamunanagar (Haryana) and Saharanpur (Uttar Pradesh), where intensive commercial agroforestry was predominant. Besides, the methodology developed as an out come of this study may be replicated for agroforestry systems existing in other parts of the country.

Unexploited fruit crops, jackfruit, tamarind, jamun, karonda, star fruit, etc having high nutritive value, are gaining popularly among the people. Similarly, many exotic fruits, Dragon fruit (Hylocereus spp), Avocado (Persea Americana Miller), Rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum L.), Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L), Passion fruit (Passiflora edulis Sims), Durian (Durio zibethinus L.,) Longan (Dimocarpus longan Lour) have been introduced in India. Exploitation of their genetic diversity could provide nutritional and livelihood security. There is a need to know about nutritional composition and health significance of these crops. Therefore, efforts have been made to know their potential nutritional and health benefits

Importance of Light in Microgreens Growth

Microgreens depend heavily on light for their growth and development. Microgreens, being photosynthetic organisms, are very dependent on light for the process of photosynthesis, which produces energy. Sufficient exposure to light is necessary for the production of chlorophyll, for vigorous leaf growth, and for the accumulation of beneficial chemicals such carotenoids and phenolics (Mocanu et al., 2021). Research by Demotes-Mainard et al. (2016) and Kopsell et al. (2005) highlights the direct relationship between microgreens' phytochemical composition and light quality, showing how changes in light spectrum affect it.

Introduction
Crop improvement is critical for tackling global food security challenges caused by population growth, resource scarcity, and climate change (Singha and Singha, 2024). Traditional breeding techniques, such as Sanger sequencing, have been around for a long, but their accuracy, speed, and usefulness are typically limited. Sanger sequencing is useful for small-scale inquiries, but its laborintensive procedures and limited throughput make it unsuitable for large-scale genome analysis. Molecular marker-based breeding strategies have proven to be effective tools for addressing these difficulties by increasing plant growth and overall quality (Bohar et al., 2020). In this respect, molecular markers like as single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), insertions/deletions (indels), simple sequence repeats (SSRs), and structural variations (SVs) are expected to be useful for future breeding operations (Panahi et al., 2024). The discovery and characterization of these molecular markers is strongly reliant on advances in sequencing technology, namely next generation sequencing (NGS). Furthermore, NGS technologies have shown to be crucial for functional genomics, allowing for large-scale transcriptome and whole genome sequencing across plant taxa (Singh et al., 2024). These vast databases give a comprehensive picture of gene expression and genetic variation, making it easier to identify functional markers linked with certain features (Figure 1). The integration of NGS and bioinformatics technologies has simplified the study of these datasets, enabling more efficient discovery of markers and improving the use of marker-assisted selection (MAS) in breeding programs (Panahi et al., 2024).
The development of high-throughput genotyping technology has enabled substantial SNP-based research, which has improved our understanding of genetic diversity, population structure, and disease association (Yirgu et al., 2023). With the progress of genotyping by sequencing (GBS), SNPs have emerged as the most extensively utilized DNA markers in the twenty-first century (Thomson, 2014). SNP markers have significantly advanced plant breeding across a variety of crops, including tomato (Peterson et al., 2012), maize (Junta et al., 2020), rice (Razak et al., 2020), wheat (Wei et al., 2011), soybean (Kim et al., 2010), oil palm (Maryanto et al., 2020), cassava (Karim et al., 2020), and taro (Helmkampf et al., 2018). Overall, SNP markers have emerged as critical tools for genetic improvement and precision breeding across a wide range of crop species. Introduction
Angiosperms produce attractive and intricately structured flowers, within which their reproductive process occurs. In flowering plants, as in other plant groups, a diploid spore-producing generation (sporophyte) alternates with a haploid gamete-producing generation (gametophyte). The flower contains specialized structures, such as the stamen (or androecium) and the pistil (or gynoecium), where the respective male and female gametophytes are formed. The pollen grain serves as the male gametophyte, while the embryo sac serves as the female gametophyte. These gametophytes are responsible for producing sperm and egg cells, respectively facilitating their union during fertilization. The pollen grain contains the male gametophyte in angiosperms or gymnosperms. Conversely, spores function as a resting and dispersal phase for cryptogams (Moore et al., 1991). The study of pollen grains (produced by seed plants, angiosperms and gymnosperms) and spores (produced by pteridophytes, bryophytes, algae and fungi) is known as palynology. This discipline examines the structure and formation of pollen grains and spores, their dispersal and their preservation under various environmental conditions. Palynology serves as a valuable research tool for understanding many aspects of plant and animal metabolism. Moreover, a deeper understanding of pollen can aid plant breeders in enhancing efforts to improve global food and fiber supplies. In the anthers of higher plants, neither the developing pollen nor the surrounding tissues exhibit autonomous growth and development. Instead, the developing anther functions as a system where the gametophytic and sporophytic generations of the plant communicate, coordinate and co-participate in development. This chapter aims to understand the various aspects of gene activity that occur during pollen development.

Abstract
The rapid growth of aquaculture as a critical food production sector brings significant challenges, particularly the management of organic waste, which can harm aquatic ecosystems and reduce farm productivity. Polychaetes, a diverse group of marine annelid worms, present a sustainable and efficient solution to these issues. This chapter investigates their potential in aquaculture waste management, focusing on their ability to bio-assimilate organic matter, mitigate pollution, and enhance nutrient recycling. Polychaetes efficiently process uneaten feed, faecal matter, and organic sludge, converting these into protein and lipid-rich biomass suitable for use as high-quality feed ingredients or bio-products. Their integration supports the circular economy’s principle and integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA), fostering a synergistic system that minimizes waste and optimizes resource utilization. Additionally, polychaete application enhances water quality, reduces reliance on chemical treatments, and promotes sustainable aquaculture development. Integrating polychaetes into aquaculture systems, emphasizing their potential to drive eco-friendly practices, offers a pathway
toward more sustainable, resilient, and economically viable aquaculture production.

Introduction

Seaweeds, also known as marine macroalgae, grow in intertidal zones to deep sea environments. Based on their pigmentation, seaweeds are classified into three groups. They are red (Rhodophyta), green (Chlorophyta), and brown (Phaeophyta). Seaweeds are the primary producers in marine ecosystems; they also contribute to carbon fixation, nutrient cycling, reducing wave energy, preventing coastal erosion, and oxygen production. The complex, three dimensional growing nature of seaweeds helps habitat marine flora and fauna. Seaweeds are consumed as food in many countries, particularly in Asia due to their high nutritional content. Along with their nutritional value, they contain bioactive compounds with potential pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications. Agar and alginate from seaweeds are used in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Seaweeds are integral part of marine ecosystems. Chemical pollutants including pesticides can disrupt these ecosystems by harming their populations, which directly or indirectly affect the marine environment. seaweeds are not only essential components of marine ecosystems. They are also consumed directly or indirectly in various food products (e.g., sushi, soups, and salads). The pesticides in the marine environment absorbed by seaweeds and bioaccumulate in the food chain. Seaweed cultivation is an emerging sector worldwide. The applications of seaweeds are food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and biofuels production. Seaweeds contaminate with pesticides leads to economic loss and reducing market demand. Manu of the seaweed consuming countries have safety limit for pesticide residues in food products, including seaweeds. The presence of pesticides in seaweeds also helps the development of risk assessment and management strategies including source identification, exposure pathways, and mitigating measures. The monitoring of pesticides in seaweeds provides the contamination levels over time, which helps to identifying the emerging issues, assess the effectiveness of regulatory measures, and guide adaptive management strategies.

Energy and food are the two main requirements for human civilization; however the demands for these two resources are increasing in a fast rate. Development of any region is reflected in its quantum of energy consumption. In this context, the situation in arid region is difficult. People burn firewood, agricultural waste and cow dung cake for cooking food causing damages to the fragile eco-system of arid zone. There is inadequate electrical power supply and hence villagers of remote arid areas are unable to derive general benefits. The kerosene is used for lighting and fast depleting diesel oil is used for running agricultural machinery including pumps. In this context solar energy is considered to be one of the promising sources in India.

About 12% of electricity production capacity in India is met through renewable energy sources. In India, national solar mission was launched in November 2009 with a target of 4000 MW grid and 1000 MW off-grid electricity generation from solar energy by the end of phase II (2013-2017), whereas these targets are 20,000 MW and 2000 MW, respectively by 2022. The target has been revised in 2015 to a total grid connected solar power generation of 1,00,000 MW comprising of 40,000 MW roof top generation and 60,000 MW grid connected solar power plants (Resolution of MNRE, Govt of India, No. 30/80/ 2014-15/NSM dated 1^st July 2015).

During his visit to India, President Barak Obama pointed out that our country is fortunate to have a youthful population with over half of the total population of 1.2 billion being under the age of 30. Out of the 600 million young persons, over 60 per cent live in villages. Most of them are educated. Gandhiji considered the migration of educated youth from villages to towns and cities as the most serious form of brain drain adversely affecting rural India’s development. He therefore stressed that we should take steps to end the divorce between intellect and labour in rural professions.

The National Commission on Farmers (NCF)(2004-06) emphasised the need for attracting and retaining educated youth in farming. The National Policy for Farmers, placed in Parliament in November 2007, includes the following goal of the new policy:

To introduce measures which can help to attract and retain youth in farming and processing of farm products for higher value addition, by making farming intellectually stimulating and economically rewarding.

Introduction

The rumen ecosystem is essentially a fermentation system that houses a vast array of different microbes. Ruminants typically browse low energy forages, such as grasses or other plant material, rich in fibre but not easily accessible to the ruminant without rumen fermentation. These forages are literally food for the microbes present in the rumen first and then, in turn, the products of these microbes are the feed for the ruminant. Microbes break down forage in the anaerobic rumen environment and the products of microbial fermentation provide the ruminant with metabolisable compounds, such as short chain fatty acids, while the microbes themselves account for around 90% of the amino acids entering the lower intestine. There are many significant challenges to investigate rumen ecology.

Introduction

The Indian arid zone, which occupies 38.7 million hectares in the states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, is characterized by low and erratic rainfall with a coefficient of variation fluctuating from 40 to 70% and extremes of temperature (1–48º C), poor-quality underground water, high wind velocity, and sandy soils. These vast land resources are blessed with rich agro-biodiversity despite all these aberrations that support the high human and livestock populations and have beneficial climatic conditions for producing quality fruits and vegetables. Recently, the immense potential of arid horticulture has been realized, and the area under cultivation of arid crops is increasing enormously. The production also increases with the increased cultivated area, which opens up the probability of establishing a market glut with underutilized foods.

Arid Fruits and Vegetables

Arid and semi-arid regions of the country are blessed with a variety of horticultural crops such as date palm, bael, aonla, pomegranate, fig, mulberry, Jamun, ker, karonda, lasora, wood apple, ber, bordi, khejri, kachri, snap melon, drumstick, cluster bean, and methi. Most of these crops are highly perishable and cannot be stored for extended periods due to uncongenial atmospheric conditions such as high temperatures and low relative humidity.

13.1 Introduction

Winds are the motion of air around the earth. This movement in air is caused by the uneven heating of the planet’s surface by the sun. The idea of using wind as a form of power is not new. The traditional applications of wind were primarily as sources of kinetic energy for rural, agricultural and a limited number of industrial uses such as pumping water and grinding grain.

Presently wind energy can be used for two major applications, such as wind mills for pumping water for drinking as well as for irrigation purposes and second application is as aero-generator for electricity generation for domestic and industrial uses. In addition to this, presently wind energy battery charger are also available, which can store energy for lights, radio communication, hospital equipment and to power various emergency related equipment.

The wind energy has an enormous resource, but the problems of utilizing the winds are many and varied. Wind energy is very diffuse in nature and local topographical features significantly alter the prevailing winds thus leading to the extremely site specific nature of wind energy.

Scientirsts have estimated that as much as 10 per cent of >the world’s electricity could be provided by wind generators by the middle of 21 century. India has estimated wind power potential of 45,000 MW. India now, ranks fourth in the world in wind power generation.

The world’s largest wind farms are in California, where wind turbines can generate power upto about 1120 MW. The first wind mill used as source of electric power was built in Denmark in 1890. Presently in India about 2382 MW of electricity is being produced through wind energy.

Microbial inoculants are “microorganisms that are added to soils or plant surfaces to promote plant growth and health”. These microorganisms include bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms that have beneficial effects on plants. They have been used in agriculture for many years to improve plant growth and health. They can be used in various ways, including in seed treatments, soil inoculation, and foliar sprays. They work by colonising the root zone or plant surface and providing a range of benefits to the plant. These benefits include nutrient acquisition, disease suppression, and stress tolerance (Callaghan., 2022). Ultimately, their application in agriculture is to increase crop yields, improve soil health, reduce the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides, and generate sustainable income for farmers. The microbial inoculant market size is expected to generate revenue of USD 24.6 billion by 2027 and is estimated to be valued at USD 12.9 billion in 2022, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.7% from 2022 to 2027. The biofertilizers market in India is estimated to increase from $110.07 million in 2022 to $243.61 million by 2029, at a CAGR of 12.02% during the forecast period (Biofertilizers market Size: Global analysis, 2029). This chapter discusses the use of microbial inoculants in agriculture and their potential as an income-generating tool for farmers.

1. Introduction

Web 2.0 speaks about the second version of web advancement and draft that aims to make it easier to communicate and safer to share information, as well as to make the web more interoperable and user-centered. Social networking sites, video-sharing sites, Wikis, blogs, and folksonomies are just a few of the web-based communities, hosted services, and apps that have grown and changed because of Web 2.0 ideas. (King and Brown, 2009; Wikipedia, 2010c). According to Birdsall (2007) web 2.0 is a social revolution since these tools have brought new changes in the society. According to O'Reilly (2005) the advent of Web 2.0 has revolutionized the way individuals and organizations interact with the internet, marking a significant shift from a static web experience to a dynamic, user-driven environment. This transformation is characterized by the emergence of platforms and tools that empower users not only to consume content but also to create, share, and collaborate on it. As a result, Web 2.0 has fostered a more participatory online culture, where users actively engage in the generation and dissemination of information.

Plant being sessile are subjected to a myriad of biotic and abiotic stresses that impede growth and resulting significant losses in crop productivity globally (Bhat et al., 2019; Ganie & Reddy, 2021). In this context, there is an immediate need to develop high yielding climate-resilient crop varieties for ensuring food security in the face of increasing population growth. Although conventional breeding has achieved notable success in the development of high-yielding crop varieties (Bhat et al., 2020), but this approach is slow to maintain pace with ever increasing population. In this regard, more recent approach of genomics-assisted breeding (GAB) has emerged as a pivotal approach to develop the high-yielding climate resilient crop varieties (Bhat et al. 2021). Although, low-throughput sequencebased markers like simple sequence repeats (SSRs) have been extensively utilized in molecular breeding programs, but they have the limitations of reduced genomic coverage and high cost (Varshney et al., 2014; Zargar et al., 2015). In this context, the emergence of second-generation DNA marker systems has provided higher genomic coverage and low cost in marker-assisted breeding. For example, recent advancements in next-generation sequencing (NGS) and genotyping platforms have substantially enhanced marker density and genomic coverage while reducing costs (Przewieslik-Allen et al., 2019); thus rendering them commercially available for both model and non-model crop species (Huang & Han, 2014; Rasheed et al., 2017). These high-throughput genotyping platforms provides millions of DNA polymorphisms (Bassi et al., 2016; Ganal et al., 2012), thereby enhancing gene mapping resolution and prediction accuracy in genomic selection (GS) (Robertsen et al., 2019; Yu et al., 2019). Most of the agriculturally important crop traits, such as yield, quality, and stress tolerance, possess complex inheritance i.e., governed by multiple genes with minor effect on trait of interest as well as are highly influenced by genotype-by-environment (G × E) interactions (Voss-Fels & Snowdon, 2016). The conventional linkage mapping approach has elucidated the genetic basis of agriculturally important complex traits but this approach involves the use of bi-parental mapping populations which are constrained by the limited genetic diversity, low resolution, and restricted recombination events (Brachi et al., 2011; Collard et al., 2005). Consequently, the genome-wide association study (GWAS) has emerged as a powerful approach for dissecting the genetic basis of complex quantitative traits in crop plants, resulting higher resolution and allelic diversity (Varshney et al., 2020; Zhu et al., 2008). Moreover, owing to the availability of cost-effective and high-density genotyping platforms, has allowed the routine use of GS in the crop breeding which is more recent approach of GAB (Crossa et al., 2017). In recent years, the advent of next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based genotyping techniques has significantly allowed the genotyping of extensive germplasm collections, enabling comprehensive GWAS and GS analyses (Annicchiarico et al., 2017; Zargar et al., 2015). Nonetheless, the predominant limitations impeding the utilization of SNPs in the GWAS and GS approaches encompass their inherently biallelic nature, the occurrence of rare alleles, and the prevalence of linkage drag (Voss-Fels & Snowdon, 2016; Wray et al., 2013). Abstract

More than one-third of food is lost or wasted in post-harvest operations in India. Decreasing the post-harvest losses (PHL) may be a sustainable solution to increasing food availability and improving farmers’livelihoods. As per Associated Chambers of Commerce of India, India loses approximately US$ 14.33 billion annually on account of PHL (ASSOCHAM, 2017). The objective of this study is to analyse the agricultural wastes that are produced in the value chain for a modern trade retailer, identify their causes, and discuss methods for minimising field wastages. A case study approach has been used to depict the agricultural value chain (vegetable segment). A field visit was conducted to a farmland and a privately operated Collection Center in Barasat area of West Bengal. The author discusses solutions towards minimising harvest wastages in the farm by focusing on waste reduction. Post-harvest wastages beyond the farm can be reduced by undertaking measures that focus on waste management. Going forward, adoption of technologies by farmers may lessen inefficiencies such as wastages and improve their income. Further scope for research lies in exploring joint interventions by private players, government agencies, non-profit organisations and entrepreneurs through public-private partnership models or through development of clusters for creating sustainable value chains and achieving greater profitability.

As we stand at the threshold of this final chapter, “Harvest For Future,” we reflect on the journey that has brought us to this moment. Throughout the preceding chapters, we’ve explored the intricate relationships between rural households, agricultural practices, and the ever-changing climate. We’ve examined the critical role that operational agricultural meteorology plays in empowering rural communities to adapt, innovate, and thrive in the face of uncertainty. From understanding local weather patterns to leveraging climate-resilient agricultural practices, we’ve traversed the complexities of sustainable rural development. Our exploration has taken us through the nuances of climate variability and its impact on agricultural productivity, water management, and soil health. We’ve discussed the importance of effective early warning systems, drought management strategies, and crop insurance programs in mitigating the risks associated with climate-related shocks. We’ve also highlighted the critical role that information and communication technologies can play in disseminating climate information, agricultural advisories, and market intelligence to rural households. Moreover, we’ve examined the human side of sustainable rural development, including the social, economic, and cultural factors that influence decision-making processes within rural households. We’ve looked at the ways in which agricultural meteorology can be used to support climate-resilient agriculture, enhance food security, and promote sustainable livelihoods. Through case studies and examples, we’ve seen how operational agricultural meteorology has been successfully implemented in various parts of the world, leading to improved agricultural productivity, increased incomes, and enhanced resilience among rural households. Now, as we look to the horizon, it’s time to distill the insights, strategies, and lessons learned into a cohesive vision for the future. What does a sustainable rural household look like in the context of a rapidly evolving climate? How can operational agricultural meteorology continue to support and uplift these communities, fostering resilience, equity, and prosperity? In this final chapter, we’ll synthesize the key takeaways from our exploration and chart a course for harnessing the full potential of agricultural meteorology to create a more sustainable, food-secure, and climate-resilient future for rural households worldwide. We’ll explore the opportunities and challenges associated with emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, big data analytics, and the Internet of Things, and how they can be leveraged to enhance the delivery of climate services to rural households.
