The drug conventionally used for sedation is xylazine, which is an alpha-2 agonist (Dugdale, 2010; Rankin, 2015). Dexmedetomidine is the latest drug of the same class used for sedation, and is more specific to alpha2 receptors than xylazine (Ishyama et al., 1995). Doses of 1-2 mg per kg body weight of xylazine (Hall and Clarke, 2001) and upto 20 mcg per kg body weight of dexmedetomidine (Ko, 2013) are required for sedation when used alone (Hall and Clarke, 2001; Rankin, 2015). Similar degrees of sedation could still be achieved at lower doses of xylazine (0.2 to 0.4 mg per kg body weight) and dexmedetomidine (2.5 to 5 mcg per kg) if administered in combination with any opioid drug like hydromorphone / oxymorphone / fentanyl / buprenorphine / butorphanol / nalbuphine / tramadol at their usual doses (Hunt et al., 2013). Another drug - acepromazine, which is a phenothiazine tranquiliser, is used at its doses of 0.01 to 0.05 mg/kg combined with an opioid for achieving sedation (Smith et al., 2001; Dugdale, 2020; Ko, 2013). Combination of an opioid with either a phenothiazine tranquiliser or an alpha2 agonist sedative drug provides neurolept anaesthesia/analgesia (Dugdale, 2020; Rankin, 2015). An anticholinergic drug - glycopyrrolate is administered in combination with acepromazine and opioid to prevent bradycardia (Dyson and James-Davies, 1999). Anticholinergics are generally not recommended with sedative cocktails containing dexmedetomidine, but preferred with sedative cocktails containing xylazine (Congdon et al., 2011; Billah et al., 2017). If sedation is to be achieved with acepromazine alone, higher doses need to be administered where there will be an increase in its dose dependent side effects, and hence not preferred (Simon and Steagall, 2020). Benzodiazepines are another class of sedative drugs, which generally doesn’t provide predictable sedation in animals. Paradoxical excitement is caused in healthy adults when these drugs are used alone (Herron et al., 2008). Predictable sedation is achieved when these drugs are administered in combination with any opioids (KuKanich and Wiese, 2015). Also, benzodiazepines can be combined with an alpha2-opioid combination to enhance the overall sedation (Maze et al., 1992). Information is basic element in any development activity. It is useful only if it is available, if the users have access to it, in the appropriate form and language. Information in the field of agriculture, to benefit farmers, has to be tailored to local agro-ecological and socio-economic conditions backed up by relevant input supply services and public policies. The impact of information revolution with its powerful information and communication technologies are making the whole universe into a small global village enabling easy access and faster sharing of knowledge among the world communities. Information Communication Technologies have great prospect and wide scope for disseminating information to the people in remote areas with great accuracy and with no loss or distortion of any information. ICTs can empower rural communities and give them ‘a voice’ that permits them to contribute to the development process.

The term ‘Spices and Condiments’ applies to such natural plant or vegetable products or mixtures thereof, used in whole or ground form, mainly for imparting flavour, aroma and pungency to food. They are low volume high value crops which play a pivotal role in our national economy and provide a strong footing in the international market. According to the latest report of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), there are about 109 spices grown in different parts of the world. India grows about 52 of them. The list of those spices with botanical and English names which come under the purview of Spices, Board, Ministry of Commerce, Government of India is given in Table 1.

ABSTRACT

The chemical characteristics of the groundwater in and around the Valapadi taluk of Salem district have been studied to evaluate the suitability of water for domestic and irrigation uses. Twenty three groundwater samples representing the shallow and deep aquifer of the area were collected and analyzed for pH, TDS, Ca, Mg, Na, K, HCO3, CO3, SO4 and Cl. It is observed that the quality of the groundwater is suitable for domestic use with some exception. The observed high quantity of Cl, SO4 and Mg at some places require immediate attention and detailed study. The value of EC and SAR indicate good to medium q of water for irrigation.

Water is a critical input for agricultural production and plays an important role in food security. Irrigated agriculture represents 20% of the total cultivated land and contributes 40% of the total food produced worldwide. Irrigated agriculture is, on average, at least twice as productive per unit of land as rainfed agriculture, thereby allowing for more production intensification and crop diversification. India has 18% of world’s population, having 4% of the world’s fresh water, out of which 80% is used in agriculture. India receives an average of 4000 billion cubic meters of precipitation every year. However, only 48% of it is used in India’s surface and groundwater bodies. In India, more than 60% population is still dependent directly or indirectly on agriculture. Most of the available water (more than 90%) is used in agriculture. From 1951 to 1997, gross irrigated areas expanded fourfold from 23 million ha to over 90 million ha, and irrigation continues to be the largest water user. The water availability in India is going to be worse as the agriculture-important states like Punjab, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, and Rajasthan are facing a steady fall in underground water table, and per capita availability of water fall from 3450 cubic meter (1951) to 1250 cubic meter (1999).

Chemicals in the form of insecticides ,fungicides and herbicides are extensively used in large numbers in agricultural production. Commercial production of some crops would be impossible if chemicals are not used. Small quantities of chemical residues often remain in such crops and the harvested grains and other products. The residues of pesticides  have been observed in small quantities (ppm level) in soil, water, agricultural produce  and even in animal tissues and their products like meat and  milk. They finally reach the consumer, namely, man (and even animals). Even the environment  is  now-a-days polluted with pesticides and other chemicals harmful to the humans. In view of the importance and seriousness of the problem the residues need to be estimated in the food and non-food products to assess their safety. Analytical details of a few pesticide residue procedures are presented below. Specialized texts may be consulted for  more extensive information.

Chemical warfare involves using the toxic properties of chemical substances to kill, injure or incapacitate an enemy.

Chemical warfare is different from the use of conventional weapons or nuclear weapons because the destructive effects of chemical weapons are not primarily due to any explosive force. The offensive use of living organisms (such as anthrax) is considered to be biological warfare rather than chemical warfare; the use of nonliving toxic products produced by living organisms (e.g., toxins such as botulinum toxin, ricin, or saxitoxin) is considered chemical warfare under the provisions of the Chemical Weapons Convention. Under this Convention, any toxic chemical, regardless of its origin, is considered as a chemical weapon unless it is used for purposes that are not prohibited (an important legal definition, known as the General Purpose Criterion)

Walnuts (Juglans regia L.) are found in the northern parts of the country in temperate belts. They are grown in the length and breadth of the valley in Jammu and Kashmir and hilly areas of Jammu. The walnut is being cultivated in the state on 89,339 ha with an annual production of about 2,66,280 metric tonnes. In Jammu Division, walnut plantation is on 38,318 ha with an annual production of 92,227 metric tonnes. The walnut is very rich in proteins, fats and minerals and is a concerned source of energy.

Climate and Soil

Walnuts are found growing in all parts of the Himalayan region between the elevation of 1200 to 2100 m above mean sea level. Walnuts are sensitive to both low and high temperature. Climate should be free from frost in spring and from extreme heat in summer. They grow well in areas where rainfall is about 75 cm or more and is well distributed. Temperature of 29-32^oC near harvest time, results in well-filled kernels.

Walnuts do best in soils where roots can penetrate deep evenly. In addition to good top soil, sub-soil must be free of rock, impervious clay or layers of gravel. Most suitable soil is well drained silt loam with abundant organic matter. Alkaline soil and sandy soils should be avoided for walnut growing. A soil with 2-3 metres depth and pH range of 6-7 gives best results.

Agroforestry is the intentional combination of agriculture and forestry technologies to create integrated, diverse, productive, profitable, and sustainable land-use systems (Rietveld 1995). It creates complex systems with impacts ranging from the site or practice level up to the landscape and beyond (Ellis, 2004). It is one of the most conspicuous land use systems that consists of annual and perennial plants, which are often integrated with livestock. It provides ecosystem services and reduces anthropological impacts on natural forests, arrests soil degradation, enhance soil fertility in many situations and improve farm resilience (Thangataa and Hildebrand 2012; Tewari et al. 2013). Agroforestry is a land management and farming system that are not only capable of fulfilling household needs but also maintaining and improving environmental quality. Itplays a vital role in achieving integrated rural and urban development. The changing climate has potential impacts on ecosystem goods and services by means of increased variability with greater risk of extreme weather events, such as prolonged drought, storms and floods (Lindner et al. 2010). Agroecosystem and forests are the ecosystems which are the most adversely affected by climate change by means of prevalence of pests, diseases, invasive species, species endangerment and high levels of food insecurity.

ABSTRACT

Hydrogeochemistry of a region is a reflection of hydrodynamic process, composition of lithology and physical constraints. The water chemistry is the resultant of all biogeochemical processes and reactions, which have acted on water from the moment it has condensed in atmosphere till the time it is discharged. A case study has been carried out in a varied lithological terrain with Archean, Alluvium and Tertiary rocks to unravel the hydrogeochemical process. A geochemical model relays the distribution of mineral species in the groundwater. Geochemical modeling WATEQ4F has been carried out for pre-monsoon and monsoon period of various litho units in Gadilam river basin, Tamilnadu to find out the disequilibrium indices of carbonate (calcite, dolomite, magnesite and aragonite) and sulfate minerals (anhydrite and gypsum). The result of the model reveals that carbonate minerals show the over saturation state in monsoon period and the Sulfate minerals exhibit under saturation state in both the seasons.

The eventual objective of promoting IDM is to empower its users to engage sustainable agricultural production with long term positive impacts on human being, poverty and environmental health.The impact of successful implementation of IDM approaches cannot be achieved if IDM is not strategically placed within national policies for agricultural production and protection. There are number of the national policies and related regulations that have direct impact on IDM adoption and scaling up in India.

Agricultural sciences stand at the forefront of human progress, addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges - from ensuring global food security to mitigating the effects of climate change. This multidisciplinary field encompasses the study of crop production, animal husbandry, soil science, agrometeorology, biotechnology, and agricultural economics, all working collectively to improve farming systems and resource management. With the global population projected to surpass 9 billion by 2050, agricultural sciences hold the key to producing more food sustainably while minimizing the environmental footprint of agriculture. However, the effectiveness of agricultural sciences in meeting these challenges depends not only on the quality of research produced but also on the systems that govern how this research is evaluated, disseminated, and applied.
One of the most significant drivers of academic and professional success in agricultural sciences is the journal rating system. These systems serve as benchmarks for evaluating the quality and impact of scholarly publications, influencing funding decisions, academic promotions, and research collaborations. A Research Evaluation System is a structured framework or methodology used to assess and measure the quality, impact, and relevance of research activities, outputs, and outcomes. These systems are crucial in academia, industry, and research institutions to ensure that resources are used effectively and that research aligns with organizational or societal goals. The evaluation of performance in scientific research at any level - whether at the individual, institutional, research council or country level – is not easy. Traditionally, research evaluation at the individual and institutional levels has depended largely on peer opinion, but with the rapid growth of science over the last century and the availability of databases and scientometric techniques, quantitative indicators have gained importance. Yet, the methodologies underlying these rating systems are often opaque, biased, and narrowly focused on quantitative metrics such as citation counts and impact factors. Such limitations create barriers for researchers from underrepresented regions and disciplines, perpetuating global disparities in scientific research and its application. Both peer review and metrics are subject to flaws, more so in India because of the way they are used. Government agencies, funding bodies and academic and research institutions in India suffer from the impact factor and h-index syndrome. Plasmid is a double stranded, self replicating, circular extra chromosomal DNA of bacterium. It is used in recombinant DNA experiments to clone genes from other organisms and make large quantities of their DNA. Plasmid can be transferred between same species or between different species. The sizes of plasmids range from 1-1000 kbps. Plasmids are part of mobilomes (total of all mobile genetic elements in a genome) like transposons or prophages and are associated with conjugation.

Limited feed supply and poor quality of the available feeds are the major constraints for optimal livestock and poultry productivity in all developing nations like India. Most of the regions in India are characterized by irregular rainfall and thus livestock have to survive on persistent shortage of feed resources of low nutritive value for most part of the year. The poultry industry is an important livestock sub-sector in India with a potential to solve the problem of malnutrition, unemployment and augmenting rural economy. However, high feed cost decreases animal production which contributes to lower animal protein availability for human consumption. This vicious cycle of low productivity and intake of animal protein has been maintained and sustained by the scarcity of feedstuff.

1. 1 Introduction, Origin and Taxonomy Barnyard millet (Echinochloa species) is one of the oldest domesticated small millet crops which can be grown in both warm and temperate regions of the world and it is widely cultivated in Asia. It is distributed predominantly in the Indian subcontinent, China, Japan, and Korea and also to some extent in Africa and United States. In India, this crop is mainly grown in Maharashtra, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, Gujarat and the hills of Uttarakhand (Kumar et al., 2000). It ranks fourth in terms of production amongst the small millets. Indian Barnyard millet (Echinochloa frumentacea) and Japanese Barnyard millet (Echinochloa esculenta) are the two important species of the barnyard millet. Barnyard millet is majorly grown for human consumption, though it is also grown for livestock feed and fodder (Sood et al., 2015).

Panchgavya chikitsa is an age old system of medicine described in ancient Indian literature ‘Ayurveda’ and now it is known as ‘cowpathy’ means the therapy of human ailments through cow products. However, Cowpathy is different from Panchgavya as it also include cow cuddling, Backrub, Gau grass, Gauseva, and living with cow besides, Panchgavya products milk, curd, ghee, urine and dung. Since the cowpathy practice is to increase the aura of an individual, it prevents from many ailments and infections. In Ayurvedic system, the medicines are prepared either from plants or from animals besides the use of certain metals. The Ayurvedic medicines of animal origin are mainly prepared from indigenous cow products such as urine, dung, milk, curd and ghee. Medicinal use of cow urine has been in practice since time immemorial in India.

Canine atopic dermatitis (CAD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease marked by itching (pruritus), redness (erythema), and recurrent infections. While traditionally considered an immune-mediated condition, recent studies highlight the significant role of skin barrier dysfunction in its development. A key aspect of CAD is the compromised skin barrier, which increases permeability to allergens, irritants, and microorganisms, thereby worsening the disease. The skin barrier is a complex, dynamic structure essential for protecting dogs from environmental challenges. The stratum corneum—the outermost layer of the epidermis—serves as a crucial defense against environmental insults, allergens, and pathogens. In dogs with atopic dermatitis, this barrier often becomes impaired, leading to increased transepidermal water loss (TEWL), greater allergen penetration, and secondary infections. This dysfunction both results from and contributes to the condition, creating a self-perpetuating cycle of barrier disruption, inflammation, and immune dysregulation.
