 1 Determination of Moisture Content in Cheese

 Introduction

The moisture content of cheese is defined as the loss in mass, expressed as a

percentage by mass when the product is heated in a hot air oven at 102 ± 2°C

to constant mass.

Setting

The basic difference which dovetails most of the animal breeding experiments is the unbalancedness of the data collated with respect to factorial classes thereby making non-orthogonal nature of the effects involved ubiquitous. Henderson, C.R. (1953), through a series of seminal works dealt with these types of data and came out with three distinct methods to estimate the variance components emanating out of such non-orthogonal animal experiment data. Before discussing those methods, let us delve a bit on the challenges in estimating the variance components in animal breeding data. There are two major reasons, first, several methods of estimation are available (most of which are reduced to the analysis of variance method for balanced data), but not one of them has yet been clearly established as superior to the others. Second, all the methods involve relatively cumbersome algebra; discussion of unbalanced data can therefore easily deteriorate into a welter of symbols, a situation which functions as the anti-appetizer to applied researchers.

A safe starting point towards understanding the nuances of dealing with unbalanced data could be the paper by Henderson (1953) which is quite seminal in nature. The methods described have been often referred to as the gold standard in the area of estimating variance components from unbalanced data for many years to come. Of the three, method 1 is simply an analogue of the analysis of variance method used with balanced data and method 2 is used to correct a deficiency of method 1 that arises out of mixed models and the last one is quite different and involves the method of fitting constants so often used in fixed effects models. Let us see these methods in a bit more detail in the ensuing passages.

This is an extension of the analysis of variance to cover the case where observations are taken on more than one variable from each experimental unit. Interest, however, centres on one of these (y, called the dependent variable) and the question is whether the variation of the dependent variable over the classes is due to class effects or due to its dependence on the other variables, (x’s, called the independent or concomitant variables ), which also vary from class to class. The analysis of covariance controls the experimental error by taking ito consideration the dependence of y on x.

ABSTRACT

Women are vital human resources and play a significant role in agricultural and allied sectors undertaking both on-farm and off- farm activities. Yet their contribution has not been recognized and they are considered as invisible workers. Considering this, the present study has been conducted to analysis the constraints faced by farm women in agriculture and allied sectors. A total of 100 farm women were selected as respondents through proportionate random sampling. The selected respondents were interviewed personally using pre-tested well structured interview schedule. The finding showed that the major constraints that farm women faced were limited access to productive resources like land, credit, input, extension services, storage and technical assistance, their absence from decision-making process, less wages and their illiteracy also hindered their progress. Women perform all un-mechanized agricultural tasks and perform multiple tasks, which add more burden to them.

Background

Analysing changes in the cropping patterns is an important prerequisite for optimization and evaluation of water use efficiency and water resource management. Cropping pattern changes in India could not only be seen as resulting from the pursuit for higher economic returns, but also as a feedback response to limited water resources. Although a systematic framework is still needed for future cropping pattern planning in the country by taking food security, continued agricultural expansion and other constraints into consideration, the existing cropping pattern may provide an insight with which alternative cropping patter may be proposed for a right intervention in enhancing water productivity and food security.

This chapter reports the analysis of the data collected from Phase One and Phase Two of the research .The chapter is organized in three sections. Introduction

The minimum dissolved oxygen (DO) level that fish can safely tolerate depends upon temperature and to a certain extent the species. Volubility of oxygen increases as temperature decreases. In ponds, DO can change dramatically over a 24-hour period. During the day oxygen is produced by photosynthesis, the process by which green plants convert water and carbon dioxide in the presence of light, to oxygen and carbohydrates. Sample Preparation

Sample should be taken at six or more points on the top of the surface by means of a tubular trier of sufficient length to extend to the bottom of the barrel. Remove this cores and transfer to clean, dry, air tight container and seal immediately.

Before opening sample for analysis, make homogenous either by shaking or by alternately rolling and inverting container. If lump are present, sift sample through No 20 sieve, rubbing material through sieve and tapping vigorously, if necessary.

Avoid sampling on rainy day or when humidity is high, so as to reduce moisture absorption from air.

1 Determination of Moisture Content by Moisture Balance Introduction

Introduction

The Food Security is one of the most important dimensions of livelihood security of household (Rahman and Akter, 2010), because all efforts of the family members are directed towards fulfilling the family need including food. Food security defined as “access by all people at all times to enough food for an active, healthy life”. Food security includes at a minimum: (1) the ready availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods, and (2) an assured ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways (Anderson, 1990). It is also an indicator of sustainability of any vocation be it fish, crop, livestock production or combination of it. In case of Tripura very little study has been made in this aspect. Therefore, in this paper it is attempted to assess the status of food security of fish farmers of Tripura, using Index of Food Consumption (IFC) and Clustering Technique.

Data and Methodology

This study was undertaken in Tripura state and study area comprises 6 Rural Development Blocks viz. Bishalgarh, Melagarh and Mohanpur of West Tripura district; Hrishyamuk, Rajanagar and Matabari of South Tripura District. From these blocks a sample of 105 fish farmers was selected using stratified sampling method for gathering the primary data. The pretested, semi structured survey schedule was administered to collect the data during 2010.

Abstract

Plant genetic resources constitute the chief component of agro-biodiversity and comprise of land races, modern cultivars and obsolete varieties, breeding lines, genetic stocks and wild species. They provide the basic materials to the plant breeders to utilize genetic variability for the development of high yielding cultivars with a broad genetic base. The utilization of these genetic resources, however, depends upon their efficient and adequate characterization and evaluation, which in turn entails efficient characterization standards and appropriate strategies.

Introduction

Analysis of trait data generated from characterization and evaluation of the genetic resources is used to understand and use diversity. Currently, a large number of distance measures are available for analyzing similarity/dissimilarity among accessions based on different traits representing different types of variables. The selection of the most appropriate distance measure for each trait is the prerequisite for diversity analysis. One of the approaches is to form clusters where accessions between clusters would be more diverse than the accessions within a cluster. The clustering algorithms require a distance/similarity matrix between the accessions which can be calculated depending upon the nature or type of traits such as morphological and agronomic traits and/or molecular markers.

ABSTRACT

Ground water is an important source of water supply throughout the world for irrigation, industries, municipalities and rural homes and the dependence of an Indian village is on its water source only. The quality of water is as important as its quality. The quality required of a groundwater supply depends on its purpose such as drinking or agricultural or industries. To establish quality criteria, measures of chemical, physical, biological constituents must be specified as well as standard methods for reporting and comparing results of water analysis .For that a case study is to be made. Cuddalore district is a rapidly growing urbanized industrial area and lies at the east coast of Tamil Nadu in India. It mainly depends on the ground water. Water quality data for the observation wells from the year 1989 to 1999 were collected and spatial distribution of the groundwater quality is analysed using geographic information system. The important factors such as pH, Chloride shows higher level and generally occur in the central belt of the study area which is rich in mineral wealth. Compared to the eastern half the western half shows better quality of water. From the analysis, 80% of the study area is suitable for agricultural purpose and 75% of the study area is suitable for domestic and drinking purpose.

Sample Preparation

a) Plain products: Sample should be softened at room temperature. Since the melted fat tends to separate and rise to the surface, it is not advisable to soften the sample by heating on a water bath or oven or flame. Mix thoroughly by stirring with spoon or eggbeater or by pouring back and forth between beakers.

b) Ice-cream containing Fruits and Nuts: Fill one third part of the cup with ice cream sample. Melt the product at room temperature and mix until insoluble particles are finely divided (about 3-5 minutes for fruit pieces and upto 7 minutes for nut pieces). Otherwise, the product may be ground in a porcelain or glass pestle and mortar. Don’t let temperature exceed 25oC at any time during softening and mixing steps. If fat separation occurs, discard sample otherwise immediately pour mixture into wide jar and cap tightly. If allowed to stand, shake vigorously before taking sample for analysis.

Abstract

Wild plants of medicinal value are the embodiment of knowledge perception gift from our ancestors and these plays a significant role in curing various human health disorders. This gifted knowledge of economic plants used by the local people usually has long narrations for use in their daily activities. Considering the value of indigenous knowledge associated with plants, a study was undertaken on herbaceous communities in Atraulia area (Burhanpur tehsil), district Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh. During the investigation, a total of 71 informants (22 females and 49 males) were interviewed and data regarding ethnobotanical information on wild plant species were documented and analysed. The results indicated a total of 169 species belonging to 41 families used in indigenous herbal preparation as medicine from Atraulia area by local tribal people. The dominant growth forms were the annual herbs represented by 91 species, followed by 46 species of perennial nature and 32 species of biennial growth. Therefore, we can conclude that this region is rich in herbaceous plants and plant used as medicine is wide spread in the study area. This communication deals with demography of the informants, botanical name of herbaceous plants, family, part used, disease cure, use report, frequency of use and recommendation for conservation of unique valueable resources.

Groundnut is one of the main oilseed crop of India.Unlike many oilseeds, Groundnut can be consumed directly in various farms and hence now it is also being considered a supplementary food crops. In india groundnut is grown in an area of about 6.5 hectares with a production of  about 7 million tones of pods per annum (2007). It is one of the few crops that can be cultivated even on marginal lands under low input conditions. Unfortunately average productivity of groundnut in india is quite low (1000kg) compared to (USA-3000 kg/ha, China- 2600 kg/ha, Argentina-2100 kg/ha  and  Indonesia-1550 kg/ha).

Sampling of Milk for Analysis

A careful and accurate sampling is of utmost importance for the analysis of milk. It is a fundamental principle of sampling that the quantities withdrawn, must be proportional to the quantities contained in the respective containers and uniform throughout in its composition.Thorough mixing of milk must first be ensured either by stirring or by shaking gently. If milk from an individual animal is to be sampled, the sample should be taken from the middle of vessel containing the whole amount of milk. If the sample bottles have been standing for sometime, resulting in the separation of fat in the cream layer or lumps of fat appear, the bottles may be heated in a water bath upto 40°C to melt the fat before mixing. Milk should not be shaken very violently under any circumstance as it may result in an uneven distribution of fat.

Several biophysical factors govern the agricultural productivity of a region. Among the key biophysical factors, weather and more particularly rainfall has the over riding impact on agricultural productivity since rainfall is a primary source of water and the first requirement for raising any crop. The analysis of rainfall characteristics such as occurrence and distribution of dry or wet spell is essentially required for successful crop planning, development of befitting agro techniques, recommendation of suitable crop variety, designing of water harvesting ponds, earthen dams and other soil conservation structures. It is also an established fact that the crop development will be affected if the dry spell coincides with sensitive phonological stage of the crop and sometimes beneficial if it coincides with the ripening stage. Hence for the purpose of crop planning and to carry out the agricultural practices, it is important to know the sequence of dry and wet periods. An attempt has been made in this paper to analyse the rainfall in standard meteorological week as well as monthly basis at different probability levels for Lembucherra by using computer based forecasting technique.

The acidity of milk can be determined by titrating the milk against standard sodium hydroxide solution using an indicator like phenolphthalein and is expressed in the terms of lactic acid. Though natural acidity in milk is due to its constituents such as casein, albumin, citrates, phosphates and carbon dioxide but it is customary to express in terms of lactic acid. As one gram equivalent weight of an alkali neutralizes one gram equivalent weight of an acid, the volume of standard alkali required to neutralize lactic acid of fixed volume of milk gives percent acidity of milk according to the reaction.

The assistance/credit provided by banks is classified as priority sector lending and non-priority sector lending. Priority Sector Lending (PSL) is one which has got the order of preference over other sectors by the target groups in availing bank credit as per the directives of RBI. It is one of the important steps taken by the government for the cause of rural development. 1.1 Volumetric Analysis

Volumetric analysis is a quantitative analysis. It involves the measurement of the volume of a known solution required to bring about the completion of the reaction witha measuredvolume of the unknown solution.

The reaction used in volumetric analysis must fulfil the followingconditions;

Atomic weight of an element is defined as the relative average weight of its atom as compared to the weight of an atom of C12 (stable isotope) taken as 12 on the a.m.u. (atomic mass unit) scale.

Analytical methods development and validation play important roles in the discovery, development, and manufacture of pharmaceuticals.

Pharmaceutical products formulated with more than one drug, typically referred to as combination products, are intended to meet previously unmet patients need by combining the therapeutic effects of two or more drugs in one product. These combination products can present daunting challenges to the analytical chemist responsible for the development and validation of analytical methods. This presentation will discuss the development and validation of analytical method (Spectrophotometric, High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), & High performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC)) for drug products containing more than one active ingredient. The official test methods that result from these processes are used by quality control laboratories to ensure the identity, purity, potency, and performance of drug products.

In chemistry, and especially in biochemistry, a fatty acid is a carboxylic acid with a long aliphatic tail (chain), which is either saturated or unsaturated. Most naturally occurring fatty acids have a chain of an even number of carbon atoms, from 4 to 28. Fatty acids are usually derived from triglycerides or phospholipids. When they are not attached to other molecules, they are known as “free” fatty acids. Fatty acids are important sources of fuel because, when metabolized, they yield large quantities of ATP. Many cell types can use either glucose or fatty acids for this purpose.

Statistics is a branch of science which deals with the collection, classification, description and interpretation of data obtained by conducting surveys and experiments. The essential purpose of it is to describe and draw valid inferences about numerical properties of populations” (Ferguson 1966). The experience in statistics application indicates that a single statistical method can be used in different research areas for dealing with different types of problems. Various possibilities which application of a statistical method provides in certain research areas should be considered as an adequate way of dealing with a problem of the research. However, it should be noted that statistics is not a method by which it is possible to solve all the problems in a research. Nachmias and Nachmias (2009) stated that there are basically two types of statistics which include descriptive and inferential statistics. Descriptive statistics enable the researcher to summarize and organize data in an effective and meaningful way. It involves the use of tables, charts, graphs, mean, modes, median, standard scores and correlation to treat collected data. Inferential statistics is concerned with making inferences from a unit of a population. Inferential statistics is concerned with making inferences from a unit of a population. Inferential statistics allow the researcher to make decisions or inferences by interpreting data patterns. Researchers use inferential statistics to determine whether an expected pattern designated by the theory and hypotheses is actually found in the observations. To decide whether this hypothesis is true, researchers might survey the respondents and then use descriptive statistics to make comparison between these groups and would employ inferential statistics to determine whether the differences between the groups are significant or not.

1. Introduction

The chemical composition of a food is of utmost importance from many standpoints, including nutrition, safety, and stability to microbiological, chemical or physical changes. Analysis of these food components is required to provide nutrition labelling for informing the health-conscious consumer, for quality assurance during processing and storage, and for regulatory purposes. The methodology used in analysis will depend on the particular component and the nature of product being analyzed, the purpose of the analysis, and the availability of resources. The emphasis of this chapter is on understanding the principles, procedures and calculations involved in estimating a particular component in fruits, vegetables and their products.

1. Introduction
Pharmacognosy, formerly known as materia medica, is the study of unrefined medications derived from minerals, plants, and animals. Although C. A. Seydler coined the phrase in 1815, J. A. Schmidt used it in 1811 to refer to the study of medicinal plants and their characteristics. The word refers to the study or knowledge of medicines and is derived from the Latin terms gignoso, which means “to acquire knowledge of,” and pharmakon, which means “a drug.” Plants, animals, or their parts that have just been dried, sliced longitudinally or transversely, or infrequently peeled after collecting are considered crude pharmaceuticals. The majority of the basic drugs used in medicine are derived from plants, with only a minor portion coming from the animal and mineral kingdoms. Drugs made from plants are full plants, however cinchona bark, ginger rhizome, nux vomica seeds, and senna leaves and pods are plant components. Some medications, such as orange and lemon peels and colchicum corm, are used fresh, but the majority are dried after harvesting. Crude pharmaceuticals can also be obtained by straightforward physical processes like drying or water extraction. Aloe is the dried juice of Aloe species’ leaves, opium is the dried latex from poppy capsules, and black catechu is the dried aqueous extract from Acacia catechu’s wood. Plant exudates such as gums, resins, balsams, volatile oils, and fixed oils are also considered crude medicines. Additional drugs that physicians, surgeons, or pharmacists use directly or indirectly include diatomite for filtering gums or turbid liquids; cotton, silk, jute, and nylon for surgical dressings or kaolin; wax, gelatin, and agar for use as pharmaceutical auxiliaries of flavoring or sweetening agents; and drugs used as insecticides or vehicles. Animal medications can be extracts, like liver extracts, glandular products, such thyroid organs, or whole animals, like can-tharides. Similarly, goods that come from animals include fish liver oils, bee wax, musk, certain hormones, enzymes, and antitoxins. Drugs can be classified as either organized or disorganized. Organized medications come directly from plants and are composed of biological tissues. Unorganized pharmaceuticals are generated by physical intermediary procedures such as cutting, drying, or extraction with water, and although being derived from plants, they do not contain cellular tissue. Thus, unstructured medications include gums, resins, aloe, catechu, opium, and other plant exudates. Kaolin, chalk, diatomite, and other Ayurvedic bhasmas are examples of mineralbased medicines.

Methods and procedures for the qualitative characterization and quantitative analysis of different constituents of soil organic matter are presented in this Chapter.

20.1. Moisture

The soil sample should be in an air-dry condition after mixing, sieving and grinding. When stored in a moisture-tight container, the free H₂O content should not vary appreciably during storage. While most determinations can be done on air-dry samples, for certain purposes such as obtaining summation values, a moisture content value is required.

Key milestones include the 1992 National Policy on Education, which emphasized inclusive practices, and the 2009 Right to Education Act, which mandated free and compulsory education for all children, including those with disabilities. Recent initiatives have focused on improving accessibility, teacher training and integrating students with diverse needs into mainstream classrooms, reflecting a growing commitment to equitable educational opportunities for all. Contemporary inclusive education in India is characterized by a growing commitment to integrating students with diverse needs into mainstream schools, supported by various policies and initiatives. The 2016 Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act and the 2020 National Education Policy underscore the importance of inclusive practices, advocating for accessible infrastructure, specialized training for educators, and individualized support for students. Despite these advancements, challenges remain, including inadequate resources, a shortage of trained teachers, and varying levels of implementation across different regions. Efforts are ongoing to address these issues, aiming to create an educational environment where all students, regardless of their abilities, have the opportunity to succeed and thrive. The emerging importance of an inclusive education system in India reflects a growing recognition of diversity and equality in the educational landscape. This shift is driven by the realization that inclusive education not only promotes social justice but also enhances academic and social outcomes for all students. Analyzing feeds for nutrient content is essential for proper balancing of livestock rations. This is especially essential for those feeds that have undergone the fermentation process. Silage samples should be analysed for dry matter, protein fractions (degradable and undegradable protein, soluble protein, and heat damaged protein), ADF, NDF, mineral content and energy. In addition to these components, lactic, acetic, and butyric and propionic acids, pH, ammonia nitrogen, ethanol, and yeast and mold counts are also quantified.

Fertility of a soil can be assessed by analyzing various available nutrients present in the soil. Fertilizer recommendations for various crops and cropping sequences can be made on the basis of fertility status of a soil. Besides this, problematic soil can be ameliorated on the basis of soil test values. Among the various steps of soil testing programmes, soil sampling is the most vital step.

The safety of the food supply suitably remains a high main concern for industry stakeholders, regulatory agencies and patrons. With the surfacing of new safety challenges and issues, companies are establishing and upgrading programs to reduce risk factors. These programs are constantly monitored for reliability, repeatability, reproducibility and effectiveness. Due to the health and safety risks posed by chemical, microbiological and environmental contaminants, analytical methods are progressively more becoming a pride and joy of food safety programs. Innovative analytical approaches are being developed in response to budding food safety issues. To monitor for known issues only the established and officially approved methods are used often. Oftentimes, new analytical methods are developed, improved or modified quickly in response to issues, such as melamine contamination, which are unforeseen. In such instances, accurate data derived from sound, validated analytical methods are required to facilitate industry stakeholders and regulators to make sound methodical decisions.

Through research, industry has improved a host of analytical methods in recent years, resulting in higher sensitivity and accuracy for difficult-to-detect contaminants, detection of contaminants in new matrix classes for grades. These advances have been made in the face of changing set of laws, more painstaking method-validation standards and end user demands for safe, quality products. Further to this, this spirit of innovation will continue to be fundamental in industry’s efforts to ensure the safety of the comprehensive food chain.
