The health and reproductive success of broodstock directly influence the quality of fry and fingerlings, which are vital for successful fish farming operations. Effective broodstock management focuses on creating an optimal environment to promote gonadal development, fecundity, and survival. Key environmental factors such as water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and photoperiod are closely regulated. Additionally, species-specific nutrition—particularly diets rich in protein, essential fatty acids, and vitamins—is essential for gamete development and reproductive performance. In captive environments, many fish species face reproductive dysfunction, especially in the final stages of oocyte maturation. Hormonal treatments are commonly used to induce final maturation and spawning. For instance, in salmonids, eggs must be stripped at the precise time of ovulation to prevent overripening, which can occur within hours. Thus, hormonal manipulation is crucial to ensure precise timing and improve spawning outcomes. Species selection for broodstock is based on biological characteristics such as size at maturity, reproductive behavior, feeding habits, and environmental tolerance. Farms may choose to rear their own broodstock from juvenile stages or collect them from wild populations. Those that raise their own become selfsustaining units, independent of external genetic inputs. Broodstock are typically reared in controlled ponds or tanks, with conditions tailored to their specific needs. This includes sex separation when necessary, as different sexes may require distinct environmental or hormonal cues. For example, male and female sturgeons respond to different hormone treatments. Water parameters are continually adjusted to meet species-specific requirements

Induced breeding in freshwater fishes is a technique used to stimulate ripe fish to breed in captivity, typically by injecting them with pituitary hormones or synthetic hormone extracts. This method is crucial for aquaculture as many farmed fish species don’t naturally breed in captivity. Induced breeding is a technique by which the economically important fishes (which generally do not breed in captive condition) are breed through artificial stimulation. Induced breeding is a technique whereby ripe fish breeders are stimulated by pituitary hormone or any other synthetic hormone introduction to breed in captive condition. It is also known as hypophysation.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF INDUCED BREEDING
Induced breeding has revolutionized aquaculture by allowing fish to reproduce under controlled conditions, overcoming their dependence on natural environmental cues for spawning. The technique’s development has seen major contributions from various countries, leading to its global application in fish farming.
• 1930 – Argentina (Houssay): The journey began in Argentina with Houssay’s pioneering use of pituitary extract to induce premature birth in livebearing fish. This milestone introduced the possibility of manipulating fish reproduction artificially.
• 1934 – Brazil: Brazilian scientists built upon this innovation by successfully applying pituitary extract for induced breeding, confirming its broader applicability beyond Argentina.
• Expansion to America and Russia: Researchers such as Merlin and Hubs in the U.S. and Gerebilisky in Russia quickly adopted and refined the technique, promoting its international recognition in aquaculture research.
• 1937 – India (Khan): Khan achieved India’s first success with induced breeding in Cirrhinus mrigala. This event marked the beginning of induced breeding in Indian aquaculture practices.

Introduction

In chemical laboratories, the use of acids, alkalis and some hazardous and explosive chemicals is unavoidable. In addition, some chemical reactions during the analysis process may release toxic gases and, if not handled well, may cause an explosion. Inflammable gases are also used as a fuel/heating source. Thus, work safety in a chemical laboratory calls for special care both in terms of the design and construction of the laboratory building, and in the handling and use of chemicals.

For chemical operations, it is also necessary to provide special chambers. The air temperature of the laboratory and work rooms should be maintained constant at 20–25°C. Humidity should be kept at about 50 percent. Temperature and humidity often affect soil and fertilizer samples. Temperature also affects some chemical operations. Hence, maintaining the temperature and humidity as specified is critical.

The City of Kumbh: Temporary Township and its major concern

From antiquity Allahabad has been regarded as a centre of pilgrimage [Table 9.a.]. The number of pilgrims visiting the city during Kumbh shows a steady rise, a clear indication of its popularity over the years. The official record shows 25 lac pilgrims in 1906, the first Mela of twentieth century, the number rose to 30 lac in 1918 and by 1930 recorded an increase of nearly 60%. There was a decline however due to the World War II, in 1942.

In Indian aquaculture hatcheries, water quality management is crucial for successful fish seed production. It involves maintaining key parameters like pH, dissolved oxygen, alkalinity, and temperature within the optimal range for the specific fish species being bred. Proper management techniques include monitoring water quality, ensuring adequate water flow, maintaining appropriate feeding practices, implementing aeration and oxygenation systems, and implementing effective waste management.
PARAMETERS
Fish health is closely linked to a delicate equilibrium between the host, potential pathogens, and their aquatic environment. Any disturbance—particularly in water quality—can induce stress in fish, making them more vulnerable to diseases. Therefore, understanding and managing key water quality parameters is essential for optimizing fish growth and survival.
Dissolved Oxygen
The optimal range for dissolved oxygen (DO) in pond water is between 5 mg/ litre and saturation, ensuring healthy fish growth. Aeration is an effective method to improve DO levels. Common aerators include paddle-wheel and aspirator types. In high-aeration ponds, improper placement of aerators along pond edges can generate strong currents that erode the pond bottom. Hence, strategic placement is crucial.
Temperature
Temperature governs fish metabolism by affecting molecular properties and biochemical reaction rates. Ideal temperature ranges vary: 14–18°C for coldwater species and 24–30°C for warmwater species. In controlled environments like hatcheries, water temperature can be regulated. In large ponds, aerator operation during calm, warm afternoons helps disrupt thermal stratification. Tree planting for shade may help regulate temperature but can reduce sunlight penetration, thus lowering pond productivity.

Agnatha consists of cyclostomes, conodonts and ostracoderms. Among recent animals, cyclostomes are sister to all jawed vertebrates known as gnathostomes. They have little economic importance. It includes the oldest known craniate fossils and has many primitive characteristics.

The oldest fossil of agnathans appeared in the Cambrian period and two groups the lampreys (Hyperoartii) and the hagfish (Myxini or Hyperotreti) comprising about 120 species still survive today (Fig. 6.1).

Hagfishes are considered members of the subphylum Vertebrata, because they secondarily lost vertebrae; before this event was inferred from molecular and developmental data, the group Craniata was created by Linnaeus to reference hagfish and vertebrates.

Mushrooms are good as nutritious food for all ages and under all conditions of health. The mushroom is a fleshy, space-bearing organ of non-green edible fungi. Its fleshy nature of mushroom is responsible for its main attraction to human being as a source of food. Like other fruit and vegetables, mushrooms are soft textured and highly perishable in nature. Mushroom are potential sources of nutrients. They can convert nutritionally valueless substances into high fat and protein food. Mushroom proteins are comparable to muscle protein in nutritive value. Being a good source of vitamins and proteins it is considered be a distinct food. The digestibility of protein in these is 72-83%. Mushrooms are edible fungi; assume considerable importance in human diet as they are good source of non starchy carbohydrate, dietary fibre, minerals and vitamins-B and essential amino acids. Mushrooms are popular their delicacy and flavour rather that food value. However, it is now a well-established fact that they are excellent sources of vitamins and minerals (Vijaya Khader, 1988). The vitamins in mushroom are well retained during cooking, canning, and dehydration. The White button mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus), Shiitake mushroom (Lentinus edodes), Pleurotus species (Pleurotus osteatus, P. flabellatus, P. sajor caju etc.), Paddy straw mushrooms (Volvariella volvacea), Winter mushrooms (Flammulina velutipis), Jew’s ear mushrooms (Auricularia polytricha) are commercially cultivated species of mushroom. In India, mainly three species viz., white button, oyster or dhingari and paddy straw mushrooms are commercially cultivated at large scale.

Hatcheries, which rear aquatic organisms like fish, crustaceans, and mollusks during their early life stages, are particularly vulnerable to disease outbreaks due to high stocking densities, variable water quality, and the fragile nature of eggs, larvae, and fry. These outbreaks can result in significant mortality, reduced seed quality, and substantial economic losses.
To prevent such outcomes, a comprehensive health management strategy is essential. This includes maintaining optimal water quality, implementing proper feeding practices, and minimizing stress on the organisms. Regular monitoring and early diagnosis help in identifying diseases promptly, allowing for targeted and effective treatments.
Robust biosecurity protocols are also vital. These measures aim to prevent the introduction and spread of pathogens through controlled access, disinfection procedures, and quarantine practices. Together, these steps help create a stable, disease-free environment that supports the healthy growth and survival of hatchery-reared aquatic species.
COMMON PATHOGENS
India’s aquaculture industry faces significant challenges from various pathogens that affect fish and shellfish health. These include bacteria, fungi (particularly oomycetes), viruses, and parasites, all of which can lead to disease outbreaks, poor growth, and mortality.

A large number of people in developing countries have traditionally depends on products derived from plants, especially from forests, for curing human and livestock ailments. Additionally, several aromatic plants are popular for domestic and commercial uses. Collectively they are called medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs). About 12.5% of the 4,22,000 plant species documented worldwide are reported to have medicinal values. With dwindling supplies from natural sources and increasing global demand, the medicinal and aromatic plants, will need to be cultivated to ensure their regular supply for processing and value added products.

The term “Medicinal and Aromatic plants” generally denotes those non-aromatic and aromatic plants, which are used for medicinal, perfumery, dye and cosmetic purposes. They are rich in secondary metabolites and are potential sources of drugs. Generally the whole plant roots, stem, bark, leaves, flowers, fruits, gums and oleoresins, etc. are used.

India has been considered as treasure house of valuable medicinal and aromatic plant species. Ministry of Environment and Forests have identified and documented over 9500 plant species considering their importance in the pharmaceutical industry. In the present context of ‘back to nature’ in health care, it is relevant that these valuable plant species are not only preserved but also their cultivation developed in order to meet the entire demand of the domestic industries as also to exploit the bright prospect for export. Shift from collection to cultivation of medicinal & aromatic plants will also ensure purity, authenticity and sustainable supply of raw materials required for herbal drugs, including polyherbals.

Abstract

The tectonics of the geological past from Archaeozoic to early part of Cenozoic era has been studied due to their penetrative documentation in the form of folds and faults. But the tectonic history of the latter part of the Cenozoic era (i.e Pleistocene period) has remained a matter of conjecture owing to the poor response of the rocks to Pleistocene movements. In the present study the authors presented a model for the Pleistocene earth movements of South India through the study of river migration, coast line changes and lineament fabric derived from the space borne photographs.

In the area of study, the northerly migration of Paleru and Pennar and southerly shift of Palar, Ponnaiyar and Cauvery rivers, marine regressions restricted within this segment and the closely spaced crest line fractures suggest a lineament controlled E-W trending Quaternary upwarping along Mangalore-Madras alignment. Similar E-W cymatogeny is inferred in the southern tip of the Peninsular India on the basis of once again such observations. Such E-W trending Pleistocene arching phenomenon suggests a N-S oriented regional compression which could be related to the collision of Indian plate with Tibetan plate.

Food technologies now have more sweeteners from which to choose than ever before. With the obesity epidemic and the public attention it currently receives, plus the increasing interest in foods with added benefits sweeteners that allow for consumer appealing labeling are of particular interest. These sweeteners fall into basic categories, those that are essentially calories free, often referred to as low-calories or intense sweeteners, and those, which are significantly reduced in calories, which may be referred to as reduced calories-sweeteners, bulk sweeteners, or sugar replaces. These sweeteners when used alone or in combination may permit such labeling as ‘low-calories’, ‘reduced-calories’, ‘light’ ‘sugar-free’ and ‘dose not promote tooth decay’.

The ideal sweeteners does not exist, it would be at least as sweet as sucrose and provide the same properties to a product as sucrose, with processing parameters similar to those of sucrose so that existing equipment can be used. It would be colourless, odourless and noncariogenic, with a clean, pleasant taste and have immediate onset and not much lingering. Solubility and stability are important. The ideal sweetener must be compatible with a wide range of food ingredients because sweetness is but one element of a complex food flavour system. Even sucrose is not perfect, being unsuitable for some applications.

7.1 Introduction

Agriculture production and farm incomes in India are frequently affected by natural disasters such as droughts, floods, cyclones, storms, landslides and earthquakes. Susceptibility of agriculture to these disasters is compounded by the outbreak of epidemics and man-made disasters such as fire, sale of spurious seeds, fertilizers and pesticides, price crashes etc. All these events severely affect farmers through loss in production and farm income, and they are beyond the control of the farmers. With the growing commercialization of agriculture, the magnitude of loss due to unfavorable eventualities is increasing. The question is how to protect farmers by minimizing such losses. For a section of farming community, the minimum support prices for certain crops provide a measure of income stability. But most of the crops and in most of the states MSP is not implemented. In recent times, mechanisms like contract farming and future s trading have been established which are expected to provide some insurance against price fluctuations directly or indirectly. But, agricultural insurance is considered an important mechanism to effectively address the risk to output and income resulting from various natural and manmade events. Agricultural Insurance is a means of protecting the agriculturist against financial losses due to uncertainties that may arise agricultural losses arising from named or all unforeseen perils beyond their control (AIC, 2008). Unfortunately, agricultural insurance in the country has not made much headway even though the need to protect Indian farmers from agriculture variability has been a continuing concern of agriculture policy. According to the National Agriculture Policy 2000, "Despite technological and economic advancements, the condition of farmers continues to be unstable due to natural calamities and price fluctuations". In some extreme cases, these unfavorable events become one of the factors leading to farmers suicides which are now assuming serious proportions.Agricultural insurance is one method by which farmers can stabilize farm income and investment and guard against disastrous effect of losses due to natural hazards or low market prices. Crop insurance not only stabilizes the farm income but also helps the farmers to initiate production activity after a bad agricultural year. It cushions the shock of crop losses by providing farmers with a minimum amount of protection. It spreads the crop losses over space and time and helps farmers make more investments in agriculture. It forms an important component of safety-net programmes as is being experienced in many developed countries like USA and Canada as well as in the European Union. However, one need to keep in mind that crop insurance should be part of overall risk management strategy. Insurance comes towards the end of risk management process. Insurance is redistribution of cost of losses of few among many, and cannot prevent economic loss. There are two major categories of agricultural insurance

A disaster (from Latin meaning, “bad star’) is the impact of a natural or man-made event that negatively affects life, property, livelihood or industry often resulting in permanent changes to human societies, ecosystems and environment. The event itself is not a disaster; it is the impact that is a disaster. Their possibility of occurrence, time, place and severity of the strike can be reasonably and in some cases accurately predicted by technological and scientific advances. Hence, we can to some extent reduce the impact of damage though we cannot reduce the extent of damage itself.  The impacts suffered include trauma, starvation, dehydration, infection, disease, shock etc. Animals are often the silent victims of disasters, and there is a real need around for the provision of effective training and management programmes to ensure that their survival and welfare are adequately accounted for. This demands the study of disaster management in methodical and orderly approach.

INTRODUCTION TO ROUTINE MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES FOR AGRICULTURAL DRONES

The damage to food grains in the storage may be caused due to insect attack, mould, fungi, bacteria, rodents, heat and moisture. The value of grain for milling purposes and human food is directly correlated with the amount of insect contamination present. The immature stages of rice and granary weevils, lesser grain borer, Angoumois grain moth and occasionally the flat grain beetle, cadelle, rust red flour beetle and saw toothed grain beetle live inside the kernels where they are hidden from view until they emerge.

Grain from casual inspection appears to be in good condition but may contain enough internal infestation which render it unfit for human food or unfit for purchase for future sale as milling stock. In general, millers have found that wheat with more than 0.5 per cent of infested kernels is unfit for milling. The need for a rapid and accurate method of estimating insect contamination in grain offered for sale has become more and more important to both grain dealers and millers.

Methods for Estimation of Damage

In order to assess the damage caused to food grains due to any one or combination of various factors; physical, chemical and micro-analytical methods are employed according to the necessity and information required. Various methods have been employed by field workers as well as by laboratory technicians in estimating damaged grains in food grains with particular reference to detection of insect infestation which alone cause maximum damage.
