Introduction
As global demand for seafood and high-protein foods grows, aquaculture has become a vital, fast-growing sector in food production. Fish farming supports food security, livelihoods, and nutrition worldwide but faces challenges like disease outbreaks, low growth rates, inefficient feed conversion, and limited genetic diversity. To address these issues, genetic improvement has become a key focus, enhancing farmed species’ resilience, productivity, and sustainability. Traditional breeding methods have driven genetic advancements, yet modern biotechnologies, particularly gene editing, now offer transformative potential (Gjedrem et al., 2012). Gene editing enables precise DNA modifications, enhancing desired traits without adding foreign genes. CRISPR-Cas9 TALENs (Transcription Activator-Like Effector Nucleases) and ZFNs (Zinc Finger Nucleases) are vital tools. Among these, CRISPR-Cas9 has gained particular prominence due to its simplicity, affordability, and high specificity (Doudna & Charpentier, 2014). In aquaculture, gene editing can increase disease resistance, accelerate growth rates, and improve feed conversion efficiency— each vital for production efficiency and environmental sustainability (Yáñez et al., 2020). Despite its promise, gene editing in aquaculture faces technical, ethical, and regulatory challenges. Issues such as off-target effects, public acceptance, regulatory diversity, and animal welfare concerns impact the adoption of gene-edited fish in food production (Van Eenennaam & Young, 2017). This chapter explores gene editing’s transformative role in aquaculture, assessing strategies to enhance disease resistance, growth, feed efficiency, and regulatory and ethical considerations. By understanding gene editing’s current landscape, stakeholders can evaluate its potential to support sustainable aquaculture and food security worldwide.

Curry leaf, Murraya koenigii (Linn.) is one of the most important plants exclusively known for its culinary and medicinal value. Leaves of the plant are widely used for flavouring food in Indian cookery. Leaves are also used in many Indian Ayurvedic and Unani prescriptions (Joseph and Peter, 1985). The whole plant including leaves, stems, flower, fruits and roots are used as tonic, stimulant, anti-flatulent, anti-diabetic, anti-oxidant (Khan et al., 1997) and anti-carcinogenic (Khanum et al., 2000). The plant is also used in curing digestive disorder, kidney disorder, burns and bruises, improving animal fertility, increasing shelf life of meat products, prevention of premature graying of hair and strengthening gums and teeths (Tara and Sharma, 2010). The plant is most widespread all over India and in some places it is grown wild. 

Classifications of cropping systems

Depending on the resources and technology available, different types of cropping systems can be adopted on farms and which are as below.

Mono cropping /single cropping: Mono cropping refers to growing only one crop on a particular land year after year or practice of growing only one crop in a piece of land year after year. Example, growing only crops during kharif in rainfed areas and this is due to lack of irrigation facilities and crops depend on rainfall alone.

Introduction Onion is a cool season bulb vegetable of high economic importance. According to Vavilov, Central Asia is the primary centre of origin; maximum species were found in the Mediterranean region in the West to Central Asia in the East. In India, onion was introduced around 600BC and from here it was introduced to the rest of the world. The largest onion-producing states in India include Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Bihar, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh, which together account for approximately 90% of the nation’s total onion output. The expected share of Maharashtra in 2019-2020 is about 42.53% in onion production with 11363.00 tonnes. Onion has highest export value among vegetables, the total value earned in the year 2019 was ? 2660.79 crores (NHB, 2020). Onion contains about 89% water, 4% sugar, 1% protein, 2% fat. It also contains vitamin C, vitamin B6, folic acid and many other nutrients in trace amounts. Onion bulbs and onion greens are used in various dishes all over the world in cooked, as well as raw form. Red and yellow onions are used in soups because of their sweet taste. White onions are traditionally used in classic Mexican cuisine and also for dehydration purpose. India, Mexico, U.S., Turkey, Pakistan, etc are the major exporters of onion while the major importers of onion are Malaysia, UAE, Canada, Japan, etc.

Introduction

Livestock sector has been an integral component of Indian agriculture since time immemorial due to its multifarious contributions to the society in the form of nutrient-rich food products, clothing, drought power, income and employment. India has huge population of livestock. Of the total livestock population of the world, India alone has about one-fifth cattle population. As per the 20th livestock census estimate, total livestock population in the year 2019 was over 535 million. Among the livestock products, milk is the most important. India has a glorious history of outstanding achievement in transforming itself from milk deficit country to world’s biggest milk producer over the span of three decades. With over 300 million bovines and producing over 198 million tonnes of milk in 2019-20, the Indian dairy sector exhibits strong growth potential. Despite COVID-19 induced restrictions, which has thrown the smallholder milk producers from the frying pan to fire, the organized dairy sector showed positive growth rate of around 1% in the last f iscal– the lowest in a decade. Despite these proud boasts, poor productivity potential of Indian milch herd is a major cause of concern that may threat its numero one position in future.

The major causes of low milk productivity in India are both intrinsic (low genetic potential) and extrinsic (poor nutrition/feed management). Empirical studies in India have shown that enhancing quality and quantity of feed and fodder has greater impact than breed improvement on increasing milk productivity (Lalwani, 1989; Gaddi and Kunal, 1996; IAEA, 2006; Roy et al., 2020). The timely unavailability of nutritionally rich feed and fodder is a major hitch that impinges on the productivity growth of farm animals in the country. Nonetheless, with increase in agricultural production over the time, the animal feed availability has also improved, but its supply always falls short of the aggregate demand. At national level, the recent reported shortage in green fodder, dry fodder and concentrates is 11.24%, 23.4% and 28.9%, respectively (Roy et al. 2019), and the scenario is more unnerving in few Indian states where the fodder deficit is above 25% (Fig 1).

Lab coat: A loose white coat with deep pockets that is worn in a laboratory or medical office.

Labelling: It means any written, printed or graphic matter that is present on the label, accompanies the food or is displayed near the food, including that for the purpose of promoting its sale or disposal. After packaging, labels are required on the finished products intended for distribution and sale. Labelling can reflect on the quality of the product. It must be clear and informative. Information includes Name of the Manufacturer, Date of Manufacture, Net Weight, Gross Weight, Best before etc. Proper storage is needed for maintenance of the quality. Storage must be done only at recommended temperature, relative humidity, light and air / oxygen and carbon dioxide conditions etc. to maintain the quality of the food product. Label may include tag, brand, and pictorial or descriptive matter, written, printed, embossed, graphic, perforated, stencilled or stamped impressions. It is attached to container, cover, lid, or crown of a food package (Plate 384).

Laboratory: A place equipped for experimental study in a science or for testing and analysis. Broadly, it is a place providing opportunity for experimentation, observation, or practice in a field of study.

Lacquer: It is a colloidal dispersion of a solution of cellulose derivative, resin and plasticizer in solvent and diluents, where in all these constituents dried in air by evaporation of solvents, thus yielding a transparent, hard and water proof film.

In scientific terms, an aquarium is an artificial aquatic environment designed for the housing, observation, and study of aquatic organisms. It may vary in size from small domestic tanks to large-scale installations used in public aquariums and research institutions. Aquarium science is an interdisciplinary domain combining principles of biology, ecology, chemistry, engineering, and aesthetics to develop and manage these controlled systems. The tradition of keeping fish dates back to ancient Mesopotamian and Roman times, where small containers were used for ornamental or ceremonial purposes.
The modern aquarium evolved during the 19th century with innovations in glass production and filtration technologies. Today, aquariums are widely utilized for education, research, and recreation. In classrooms, they help demonstrate ecological and biological concepts, while researchers use them for behavioral and environmental studies. For enthusiasts, aquariums offer a calming and decorative pastime. Economically, the aquarium trade has expanded significantly, with India becoming a major contributor to the global ornamental fish market, driven by its rich aquatic biodiversity and growing export capacity.
HISTORY AND EVOLUTION OF AQUARIUM KEEPING
The concept of aquariums has ancient roots, dating back approximately 4,500 years to the Sumerians. The Romans later maintained fish for both sustenance and amusement, while the practice of breeding ornamental fish originated in China and spread to Japan. However, it was not until the 19th century, when the interdependence between oxygen, plants, and aquatic animals was better understood, that aquarium-keeping became systematically developed.

Aquaculture is the farming of aquatic organisms, which includes fish, mollusks, crustaceans, and aquatic plants. Over the past forty years, aquaculture has played a significant role in increasing the global supply of fish for human consumption, leading to a marked rise in worldwide fish production. Nearly half (49.3%) of the world’s food fish are currently farmed for aquaculture (FAO, 2023). The proportion of inland fisheries and aquaculture in India’s overall fish production has increased from 46% in the 1980s to over 85% in recent years, resulting in the country with the second-largest aquaculture production. Fishing is a thriving industry with a wide range of resources and enormous potential in India. It is also a highly significant economic activity. Aquaculture may be the solution to ensuring global food security because fish can produce significantly more biomass per unit surface area than terrestrial animals. Aquaculture has a significant impact on world food security and is also considered a potential factor for the pollution of vast marine resources. The application of eco-friendly aquaculture methods can help the aquaculture industry thrive sustainably by reducing its negative effects on the environment. In the twenty-first century, biotechnology is becoming a crucial technology for long-term sustainability management and protection (Cantor, 2000).

The escalating global threat of drought, characterized by increasing frequency and severity, demands a comprehensive and coordinated response. These prolonged periods of water scarcity not only endanger human lives and erode livelihoods but also inflict lasting damage on fragile ecosystems. Recognizing the scale and complexity of this challenge, a multitude of global initiatives have emerged, uniting international organizations, governments, research institutions, and civil society in a collective endeavor. This chapter will delve into the landscape of these crucial efforts, exploring the key organizations driving change, the diverse strategies being implemented, and the pivotal role of technological advancements in mitigating the devastating consequences of drought. By examining the framework of these global collaborations, we aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of the ongoing work to build resilience and ensure a more water-secure future for all.

Canopy management is the manipulation of tree canopies to optimize the production of quality fruits. The canopy management, particularly its components like tree training and pruning, affects the quantity of sunlight intercepted by trees, as tree shape determines the presentation of leaf area to incoming radiation. An ideal training strategy centres around the arrangement of plant parts, especially, to develop a better plant architecture that optimizes the utilization of sunlight and promotes productivity. Light is critical to growth and development of trees and their fruits. The green leaves harvest the sunlight to produce carbohydrates and sugars which are transported to the sites where they are needed – buds, flowers and fruits. Better light penetration into the tree canopy improves tree growth, productivity, yield and fruit quality. The density and orientation of planting also impact light penetration in an orchard. Generally, in close planting, quicker shading becomes a problem. An east-west row orientation results in more shading as compared to the western and southern orientation of trees. Strong bearing branches tend to produce larger fruits. The problem of a fruit grower is initially to build up a strong and balanced framework of the trees, then equip them with appropriate fruiting. Obviously, pruning in the early years has to be of a training type to provide strong and stocky framework with well spaced limbs or any other desired shape.

Abstract

In this paper we studied the economics of marigold flower in Eastern Uttar Pradish Floriculture has assumed a definite commercial status. Its potential as a viable agribusiness has also been recognized. Diverse agro-climatic conditions permit perennial production in one part of the country. This sector provides employment to millions. Floriculture was practiced only on small farms but now a few large ones have been set up. The collected information were analyzed and presented in tabular form. Making small size mala on small and large farms were higher than the large size mala. There return per Rupee of investment were estimated that the  1.66, 2.08 and  1.84, in the account of small size, large size farms and overall, respectively. The percentage of total marigold produce sale indifferent marketing channels indicated that 90 per cent produce sold in II marketing channel where as next 10 per cent marigold flowers sold directly to the consumer i.e. channel I. The retailer’s level the marigold flowers were sold to the consumers in different forms such as flower basket, bouquet and in other farms as demanded by the buyers. The marketing cost and marketing margin (Price spread) may differ from the channel to channel. The marketing cost and margins also depend upon the form in which the product reaches the ultimate consumers.

Abstract

The North-West Himalaya is bestowed with rich genetic diversity of minor temperate fruits representing the genera viz. Malus, Prunus, Pyrus, Rubus, Ribes, Sorbus, Cotoneaster, Myrica, Corylus, Crataegus, Punica, Hippophae, Elaeagnus, Viburnum, Vitis, Ficus, Citrus, Ziziphus, Morus,, Olea, etc. These species are known for their hardiness, adaptability to wastelands and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Apart from their easy availability, they assure some sustained yield and make our diet more diverse. Some indigenous species having potential for diversifying temperate fruit production are Pyrus pyrifolia, Diospyros lotus, Rubus ellipticus , R. lasiocarpus, R.. fruiticosus, Corylus colurna, Citrus pseudolimon, Hippophae rhamnoides and Pinus gerardiana. Some of the exotic temperate fruits viz. pineapple guava (Feijoa sellowiana), Chinese ber (Ziziphus jujuba), Japanese persimmon (Diospyros kaki), Rubus spp., Ribes spp, quince (Cydonia oblonga), medlar (Mespilus spp.), pecan nut (Carya illinoensis), hazelnut (Corylus avellana), husk tomato (Physalis spp.) and tree tomato (Cyphomendra betacea) have shown good performance at National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources  Regional Station, Shimla.

Ensiling is the term given for all physical and chemical changes that take place when forage with sufficient moisture content (60-65%) is stored in the absence of air for silage preservation. Silage fermentation is an exceptionally complex process involving biochemical interactions among the forage, microbial populations and the ensiling environment. Successful silage production depends upon the promotion of the fermentation brought by beneficial bacteria. The process is based on spontaneous lactic acid fermentation under anaerobic conditions. The lactic acid bacteria ferment the water-soluble carbohydrates in the crop to lactic acid, and to a lesser extent to acetic acid. Due to the production of these acids, the pH of the ensiled material decreases and spoilage micro-organisms are inhibited. The ideal characteristics of material for silage preservation are: DM content above 20% and an adequate level of fermentable substrate (8-10 percent of DM) in the form of water soluble carbohydrate. The ensiling material should also ideally have a physical form that allows easy compaction in the silo. Materials such as maize stover, sorghum stover and grass can be ensiled successfully, while crop residues such as rice and wheat straw, with low water soluble content, do not fulfill these requirements, and therefore pre-treatments, such as fine chopping or use of additives, or both, may be necessary.

Various types of cropping systems are practiced in a farm or region. They should be evaluated to find out their stability and relative advantages in yield. Again, comparisons may be made with reference to land use efficiency, biological potential and economics. Following are the important indices for assessment of competition and yield advantage:

1. Relative yield total (RYT): The oldest establishment measure of the yield advantage of crop mixtures is the Relative Yield Total. The RYT index was designed as a measure of the extent to which various crop components shared common resources, rather than as a direct measure of yield advantage.

Ornamental plants that are adapted to an aquatic environment are commonly grown in water gardens and pools. They include those that are entirely submerged or floaters that are free living in the surface water or having roots anchored firmly in the ground beneath and marginal plants that thrive along the edges of water bodies and in shallow water. Spectacular flowering plants like the lotuses and water lilies to plants like the tape grass that are entirely submerged and grass like are grown in natural or structured fresh water habitats throughout the world. Many of these are also inhabitants of aquaria.

Plants are rhizomatous herbs adapted to low lying and wet situations. The leaves are closely spaced, distichously arranged and resembling a fan, leathery, dark green, smooth and shiny. The inflorescence is a spadix that emerges from the middle of the terminal leaf. Plants are valued medicinally for their aromatic rhizomes and are also commonly grown as marginals of water gardens.

Value chain analysis and its management is a strategic planning tool used in analyzing the value chain of a company or sector or a product. Initially, it was used to assess the process of a company or single unit. Then, it was visualized as a holistic and integrated framework in upgrading the activities of companies as a whole with the coordinating efforts of the various units or sub-systems. It is useful in improving the existing system or through introducing a new component in the system.

Value chain

The word ‘value chain’ was first introduced by Michael porter in his book ‘Comparative Advantage’ during 1985. Value chain is defined as “the full range of activities which are required to bring a product or service from conception, through the different phases of production (involving a combination of physical transformation and the input of various producer services), delivery to final customers, and final disposal after use”.

Value chain comprises of full range of activities required to bring a product or service from the stage of conception, production and distribution to consumers (Kaplinsky and Morris, 2001). The study on value chain is intended to achieve comparative advantage through cost minimization and attaining consumer satisfaction. It is the preliminary step in the mapping of market (FAO, 2006).The value chain can be analyzed using Value Chain Analysis (VCA) through either quantitative or qualitative tools or both.

Tillage is the physical manipulation of the soil with tools and implements which, results in good tilth for better germination and subsequent growth of crops.

Tilth is the physical condition of the soil resulting from tillage. Soil is said to be in good tilth when it is mellow, friable and adequately aerated. Tilth is dynamic. Mechanical forces may change the roughness of the soil surface, the total porosity and bulk density of the tilled layer and the aggregate or clod size. Heavy rainfall and high velocity wind or water destroys the tilth. The action of wetting and drying, freezing and thawing regenerates desirable tilth. The roughness of the soil surface is an index of the amount of water that can be stored in soil depressions and may also be related to the resistance of the soil surface to sealing. Roughness may be related to rate of evaporation, transfer of heat and air between the soil and atmosphere.

The guava (Psidium guajava L.) also known as ‘the apple of tropics’ belongs to family Myrtaceae (Hayes, 1974) originated from Tropical South America stretching from Mexico to Peru and introduced in India by Portuguese during 17th century (Bose and Mitra, 2001). Guava is an evergreen fruit in nature, well adopted to a wide range of soil and agro-climates and acclaimed as ‘super fruit, due to high nutraceutical properties and in reach of poor people it has great demand.

Biofuels have emerged as a key solution in the energy transition toward sustainable energy, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and cutting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The demand for biofuels has been steadily increasing due to environmental concerns, government promotional policies, and technological advancements. The factors driving biofuel demand, current market trends, and future projections are the global demand for biofuels is experiencing rapid growth due to government policies, energy security concerns, and advancements in sustainable biofuel production. As more countries implement biofuel mandates and invest in next-generation biofuels, demand is expected to rise significantly in the coming years, positioning biofuels as a critical component of the global energy transition. Governments worldwide have implemented various policies to promote biofuel production and consumption. These policies aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance energy security, and support rural economies. Ethanol remains the most widely used biofuel, with major producers like the U.S., Brazil, and China increasing production to meet rising demand. The U.S. and Brazil collectively account for over 80% of global ethanol production. Bioethanol production originated in Brazil in the early 20th century, where sugarcane was used to produce ethanol as a fuel additive. However, the United States also played a significant role in the large-scale commercialization of bioethanol, especially from corn, starting in the 1970s during the oil crisis. Brazil remains a global leader in sugarcane-based ethanol, while the U.S. leads in corn-based ethanol production. Biodiesel demand is growing, particularly in the European Union, Indonesia, and Argentina. Indonesia’s B30 program (30% biodiesel blending) has significantly boosted demand. Between 2005 and 2015, the biodiesel production experienced a sevenfold increase and is projected to grow by an additional 35% by 2025 (OECD/ FAO, 2014). Biofuel policies have played a crucial role in shaping the growth of biofuel production worldwide. Since their inception, these policies have provided financial incentives, blending mandates, and research support, which have driven large-scale production. The impact of these policies varies across major biofuelproducing nations, including the United States, Brazil, the European Union, China, and India (Table 1). By exploring the significance of making weather and climate information accessible, relevant, and actionable, we will examine the strategies, initiatives, and global efforts aimed at building a weather-literate agricultural sector (Fig. 15.1). Ultimately, enhanced public awareness in this domain equips individuals and communities with the tools to make informed decisions, mitigate risks, adapt to changing climatic conditions, and contribute to more resilient and sustainable agricultural systems worldwide.
