Introduction

The backbone of economic growth are financial systems, which act as the channels for managing risks, facilitating investments, and allocating resources within an economy. Financial systems, which consist of a wide range of organizations, markets, and tools, are essential for coordinating the movement of capital between surplus (savers) and deficit (borrowers) units. They basically provide risk management, resource allocation, payment facilitation, and intermediation, among other crucial responsibilities. This complex network of interconnected roles makes sure that money is effectively allocated to its most profitable uses and offers safeguards against risk and smooth transactions. It supports sustainable growth and development by acting as the lifeblood of the economy.

A wide range of elements, such as macroeconomic conditions, regulatory frameworks, and technological breakthroughs, influence the evolution and dynamics of financial systems. Financial systems have changed significantly over time because of new difficulties and shifting environments. Resilience, creativity, and adaptation have been characteristics of the growth of finance, from the rise of modern banking institutions to the introduction of modern f inancial technology solutions. It is essential to solving urgent global issues including climate change, inequality, and sustainable development in addition to fostering economic growth and societal improvement. Financial institutions and stakeholders are using their resources to leverage sustainable finance practices, impact investment, and green finance efforts to create positive social and environmental consequences. It can be a strong tool for bringing about positive change and creating a more sustainable and equitable future.

Introduction

Plastic is the main component of environmental pollution, as it is continuously disposed of into the environment in substantial quantities. Since the creation of the first plastic polymer in the mid-twentieth century, plastic production has increased dramatically, from 1.5 million tons in 1950 to 280 million tons of plastic produced in 2011, with an annual growth rate of 8.7 % (Europe, 2017). By the 2050s, humans are expected to generate 26 billion tons of plastic waste, four times the current levels of plastic waste globally. Due to this serious concern, the United Nations has prioritised plastic waste and its management as one of the fundamental environmental concerns in its 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Plastics appear in the environment in visible and invisible forms. The visible form refers to common scenes, such as bags “flying” on tree branches, PET bottles floating in rivers, lakes, and seas or face masks we use daily. The visible form of plastic in the environment is an aesthetic mockery and a reminder of the socially indiscriminate reception of all offers from the petrochemical industry. The invisible form of plastics is called nanoplastics.

1. Introduction
Agro-industrial waste plays a crucial role in bioremediation, the process of usingbiological organisms to remove or neutralize pollutants from contaminatedenvironments (Garg, 2020). With the rise of industrialization and agriculturalactivities, there’s a corresponding increase in waste production. However,these waste materials, often rich in organic compounds, can be repurposedas valuable resources as mentioned in scientific studies (Sahota and Sharma,2020; Yadav et al., 2022).

Availability of genetic variability and exploitation of this variability are two basic requirements of successful crop breeding programmes. The presence of genetic variation in a character is a must for any improvement in that character. If all the individuals in a population are identical i.e. no variation is there, selection cannot be done, so no improvement will be done. In case of crops, if variation is not present or variation is very small, variations are created through hybridization, mutation, polyploidy etc. Selection is identification and isolation of desirable plants from a variable population. A population consists of large number of heterogenous individuals with different morphological expressions. This variability is contributed by three factors: 1. Genetic constitution of individual, 2. Environmental effect on the individual and 3. Interaction effect between gene and environment. These three factors contribute towards the phenotypic variability among the individuals of the population. Assessment of magnitude of variability present in a crop species is of utmost importance as it provides the evidence for effective selection. Phenotypic variation in a population arises due to genotypic and environmental effects.

Farmers require a diverse range of information to support their farm enterprises. Information is needed not only on best practices and technologies for crop production, but also for post -harvest aspects. Agricultural Extension is an essential pillar for research and development in agriculture. Despite a wide range of reform initiatives in agricultural extension in India in the past decades, the coverage of, access to, and quality of information   provided to marginalized and poor farmers is uneven. Approaches to agricultural extension in India and worldwide continue to evolve.

Wild relatives of cultivated plants constitute a part of crop genepool, which possess genes that have great potential for their utilization in crop improvement programmes. Wild genepools especially those occurring in biotically disturbed habitats are under threat of genetic erosion and require immediate collection to make use of their wider adaptability, tolerance/resistance to disease, insect-pests, yield, quality attributes and other biotic and abiotic traits. The wild relatives of crop plants occur in all the major phytogeographical regions of India as component of different vegetation types and exhibit variable life forms and habitat specificity. High priority demand is towards collection of those that are at the risk of erosion due to habitat disturbance by manmade/ natural causes and over-exploitation of species for commercial use.

The centres of endemism are also centres of genetic diversity and consequently centres of speciation. Unless suitable conservation methods are applied, important wild relatives of crop plants and rare endemic species in particular have poor chances of survival. Based on the efforts made in the past for collection of diversity in wild relatives of crop plants priorities have been recommended for their conservation on the basis of species status (endemic, rare/threatened/endangered, etc.) and those that have high demand in crop improvement programmes (Arora and Nayar, 1984; Nayar, 1996, 1997; Wiersema and Leon, 1999; Hanelt and Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research, 2001).

All economically important species at the risk of genetic erosion require attention for collection and conservation. Highest priority may be assigned to those having highly specialized habitat requirement and those that are endemic/rare/endangered to Indian region. Species producing seeds in large quantity and having easy method of multiplication or conservation are at lower risk than those producing less seed and of the recalcitrant or orthodox types where the storage protocols have been least worked out. Species having short seed viability or low germinability need special investigation.

1. Introduction

The heritage of medicinal plants used in India has an ancient history. The epic of Ramayana witnessed Sanjivani Booti as life saving drug. Two important compendia on medicinal plants i.e., Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita were published between 1000 BC and 600 BC. In these Ayurvedic literatures, uses of more than 1,200 plant drugs along with their action and specific therapeutic applications are mentioned. Charaka made 50 vargas (groups) of drugs while Sushruta made 38 ganas (groups) of drugs (Singh and Gautam, 1997). India, with its diverse agro-climate, harbors large plant-diversity. Eastern Himalayas comprising Darjeeling, Sikkim and adjacent Nepal as well as Bhutan hills are very rich in florastic diversity, several of which are endangered but economically useful medicinal plants with high demand in national as well as in international market (Manandhar, 1999). A great many of these wild Himalayan medicinal plants have found their way into modern bio-pharmaceuticals and bio-cosmetics in recent times (Rai et. al., 2000). One such species is Nepalese Kutki (Picrorhiza scrophulariiflora, Pennell) belongs to family Scrophulariaceae.

P. scrophulariiflora is better known by the name Nepali Kutki. The rhizome of this plant has been found to contain the chemicals like Kutkin, D-mannitol and vanillic acid (Yang, 1996). It is said to have effects on fever, malnutrition due to digestive disturbance, jaundice, diarrhoea and dysentery (Zhang et al., 1994). In India it is valued for their demonstrated value as an antibiotic. They are also used as an adulterant of, or as substitute for, Gentiana kurrooa. Properties that these two species share include the ability to stimulate appetite and gastric secretions (Jain, 1968). In Nepal rhizome of this species is also used as a cathartic, in case of dyspepsia, as a purgative as well as in the treatment of scorpion bites (Anon., 1993). Some of the important active photochemicals are listed in Table 1.

Distribution

Several countries grow henna on a commercial scale for its dye-bearing leaves, notably India, Egypt, Iran, Niger, Sudan and Pakistan. In India, it was once grown extensively in Punjab and Gujarat. However, gradually the major cultivation has shifted to the arid fringes of Rajasthan, with Pali district having the maximum area under henna. It is taken as an annual Ratoon crop under rainfed conditions. Presently over 39,000 ha of henna plantations in the district with nearly 70 per cent occurring in the Sojat area produce around 20,000 t dry leaves worth Rs. 40 crores. Besides this, leaf cuttings are also collected from existing farms and field boundary plantations in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. In Uttar Pradesh henna is grown for its scented flowers used in the essence industry. Kannauj, Lucknow, and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh are reputed centres for the commercial extraction of mehndi oil from flowers and its use in traditional essence. Since henna is grown as a dryland crop under limited moisture conditions greater use of available moisture by the plants is possible.

Introduction

Amaranthus species were grown as the principle grain crop by the Aztecs 5,000 to 7,000 years ago, prior to the disruption ofthe South American civilization by the Spanish Conquistadors. Synonyms such as “mystical grains of the Aztecs,” “super grain of the Aztecs,” and the “golden grain of the Gods” were used to describe the nutritious amaranth grain. Vegetable Amaranthus spp. were and are presently utilized for food from such diverse geographic areas as southwestern United States, China, India, Africa, Nepal, South Pacific Islands, Caribbean, Greece, Italy, and Russia (Stallknecht et. al., 1993). Amaranthus grain is extremely nutritional pseudo-cereal with a higher amount of proteins when compared to true cereals. It is a reasonably well balanced food with functional properties that have been shown to provide medicinal benefits. Amaranth associate underutilized crop and an inexpensive supply of proteins, minerals, vitamin A and C, appears to be a future crop which may substantiate this demand because of its tremendous yield potential and biological process qualities, conjointly recently gained worldwide attention (Topwal, 2019). Amaranth as a unique plant with a long and mysterious history is the obj ect for science and also for business. Its characteristics such as absence of gluten and special composition of oil lead this plant to the position of very important plant for the future. Introduction
The genetic code and protein synthesis are fundamental processes that underlie the
expression of genetic information within all living organisms. These processes are integral
to understanding how DNA, the hereditary material, dictates the production of proteins,
which are essential molecules that carry out various functions in the body, from structural
support to catalyzing biochemical reactions.
Genetic Code
The genetic code consists of rules that guide the translation of information stored in
DNA or RNA sequences into proteins within living cells. It is nearly universal across
all organisms, underscoring the shared evolutionary origins of life. The genetic code is
composed of codons, which are sequences of three nucleotides in mRNA (messenger
RNA) that correspond to specific amino acids or stop signals during protein synthesis.
Each of the 20 amino acids used in protein synthesis is encoded by one or more codons.
For instance, the codon AUG not only codes for the amino acid methionine but also serves
as the start signal for translation, marking the beginning of a protein-coding sequence. The
redundancy of the genetic code, where multiple codons can specify the same amino acid,
provides a protective mechanism against mutations, as some changes in the nucleotide
sequence do not alter the resulting protein.
Protein Synthesis
Protein synthesis is the process by which cells construct proteins based on the instructions
encoded in mRNA. This process takes place in two primary stages: transcription and
translation.
Transcription: Transcription is the first step of gene expression, where a particular segment
of DNA is copied into RNA by the enzyme RNA polymerase. During transcription, one
of the two DNA strands serves as a template for the formation of a complementary RNA
strand, This newly synthesized RNA strand, known as pre-mRNA, undergoes further
processing, including splicing, capping, and addition of a poly-A tail, to become mature
mRNA, which is then exported from the nucleus to the cytoplasm in eukaryotic cells. In
contrast, in prokaryotes, both transcription and translation occur within the cytoplasm.

Climate normals for crops and livestock refer to the long-term average weather conditions, such as temperature, precipitation, and humidity that are suitable for specific crops and livestock in a particular region. These normals help farmers and agricultural planners understand the typical climate conditions that support optimal growth, productivity, and health of crops and livestock. By knowing the climate normals, farmers can make informed decisions about:
• Crop selection and breeding
• Planting and harvesting schedules
• Livestock management and breeding
• Irrigation and water management
• Pest and disease management
15.1. Crop Weather Calendars
A Crop Weather Calendar (CWC) is a valuable agrometeorological tool used to align the crop growth stages with prevailing weather conditions to optimize agricultural practices. It helps farmers, extension workers, and planners make informed decisions by integrating weather information with the crop‘s physiological needs (Fig. 15.1).

1. Individual or mass selection
The terms individual selection and mass selection are often used interchangeably, and they refer to selection solely based on the individual´s phenotype. This is a well-known and widely used method of selection in animal breeding. It can be used on characteristics that can be measured in the candidate animal itself, as weight gain is most efficient in characteristics of high heritability. Individual selection is usually the simplest method to operate and, in many circumstances, it yields the most rapid response. It does not require individual identification or the maintenance of pedigree records, hence, it may be considered the least costly method. In principle, it can produce rapid improvement if the heritability of the trait(s) under selection is high. It can be suitable for growth rate and morphological traits (easily assessed, expressed in both sexes). By contrast, individual selection is not suitable for situations in which the estimation of breeding values requires the slaughter of the animals (carcass and flesh quality traits). When applying individual selection, the evaluated animals must be under equal environmental conditions; therefore, the environmental conditions must be controlled. In this case, the influence of external conditions should be minimal and kept the same for all individuals to be compared at any life cycle stage. In this manner, the probability of correct ranking of the individuals based on thus genetic merit is maximized. Differences between individuals or groups of individuals for environmental factors may reduce the accuracy of the selection substantially, and in that way, can also reduce the possibility for genetic improvement. it is important to form contemporary groups and select within them. To obtain as equal environmental conditions as possible all individuals to be compared should be reared under identical environmental conditions. Therefore, it is important to form groups of animals with similar ages, grown in the same production systems, with similar control of environment, handling, and feeding. However, mass selection may be unsuitable if there is large uncontrolled systematic environmental variation (for example age differences). Additionally, there is no control of inbreeding with mass selection.

Ornamental ginger includes attractive tropical plants cultivated for their colourful inflorescences and foliage and used in floral arrangements and landscaping. This chapter describes commercially useful ornamental ginger types, their botanical features and production requirements. It discusses climate, soil, propagation through rhizomes and other planting materials, field establishment, irrigation, nutrient management and cultural operations. Pest and disease management is followed by harvesting, grading, postharvest handling and yield considerations. The chapter emphasizes production of high-quality ornamental stems and the commercial potential of tropical ginger species as specialized cut flowers for domestic and international floriculture markets. under suitable protected and open conditions

    b.    Individual plant selection: Done in self pollinated crops, cross pollinated crops (line breeding) without control of pollination, artificially self pollinated lines, dioecious plants and clonally propagated lines.
    3.    Hybridization
    a.    Crossing in self pollinated crops.
    b.    Single crosses, double crosses and synthesized varieties.
    c.    Varietal crosses.

India is the second largest producer of vegetables in the world. Indian Council of Medical Research, New Delhi recommends intake of 125g leaf vegetables, 100g roots and 75g other vegetables/ day / adult for a balanced diet. Green leaf vegetables occupy an important place among the food crops as these provide adequate amounts of many vitamins and minerals for humans. Besides this, leaf vegetables are easy to grow and readily fit in any cropping system owing to its short duration. They are rich sources of carotene, ascorbic acid, riboflavin, folic acid and minerals like calcium, iron and phosphorus (Ramdasmurthy and Mohanram, 1984).
 
In nature, there are many greens of promising nutritive value, which can nourish the ever increasing human population. In spite of their nutritional importance, in India, leaf vegetable production is limited to kitchen gardens and market gardens due to various reasons. Although they can be raised comparatively at lower management costs even on poor marginal lands, they have remained underutilized due to lack of awareness and popularization of technologies for utilization.
