True to his verses, geohazards are phenomena regulated by the law of natureand it is beyond the human intellect to understand thoroughly and capability to conquer. This is the lesson learnt by us from so many incidences that geohazards cause greatest havoc wherein natural processes are going on and are inhabited by humans. Greed for natural resources and population pressures on the earth’s resources are the causes of many a catastrophic event. Examples in this regard are galore including, damning river courses and location of urban centers along rivers and coasts – flooding, cyclonic storms, tsunami hazards; alteration and deforestation hill slopes for agricultural and construction activities – landslides; unscrupulous utilization of ground water resources – drought, etc. This chapter is an attempt to draw the attention of human communityasa whole toturn towards learning to live with the nature without alterning the natural processes to get rid of impacts of geohazards as a best ever mitigation measure. In other words, this chapter attempts to emphasize the need to change our attitude to escape from natural hazards instead of attempting to tinker around natural processes only to get battered at the end.

INTRODUCTION

Oxford English dictionary states that the word ‘disaster’ is derived from the 16^th century French word ‘disastre’, which is a combination of two terms namely, ‘Des’ meaning bad or evil and ‘astre’ means star. Thus “desastre” signifies a ‘bad star’ or ‘evil star’. Disaster, therefore, implies loss or damage occurring due to some unfavorable star. However, in terms of modern knowledge, the word ‘disaster’ denotes any odd event, whether natural or man made, which can bring about sudden and great miseries to humanity in the form of loss of life or/ and property.

Meta-analyses has been used extensively to combine the results of existing studies and obtain powerful estimates of a parameter. In animal breeding, attempts have been made to obtain meta-analysis estimates for genetic parameters. This tool is more pertinent to animal breeding on account of heterogeneity in terms of location, sample size and other factors in the estimation of genetic parameters. This chapter explains the background, methodology, precautions and implications of meta-analysis with respect to genetic parameters.

A meta-analysis is a powerful tool of statistics that could combine several estimates from different studies for a parameter and the resulting weighted estimate could be used as a representative value for the particular parameter. However, not all the studies are similar with respect to location, sample size, and methodology used and thus various precautions are to be taken right from the selection of studies to incorporating of between-study heterogeneity in the models. In animal breeding, met-analysis is very much useful for obtaining meaningful estimates of genetic parameters and this chapter explains the methodology of meta-analysis in animal breeding.

Introduction

Agriculture is the primary source of livelihood for about 58 per cent of Indian population. Gross Value Added (GVA) by agriculture, forestry and fishing was estimated at Rs. 19.48 lakh crore in FY2020. Growth in GVA in agriculture and allied sectors stood at 4 per cent in FY2020. Share of agriculture and allied sectors in gross value added (GVA) in Indian economy at current prices stood at 17.8 per cent in FY20. Consumer spending in India will return to growth in 2021 post pandemic-led contraction, expanding by as much as 6.6 per cent (Anonymous, 2021). Total food grains production for 2020-21 is set at a record 298.30 million tonnes (MT), comprising 149.92 MT in Kharif season and 148.40 MT during Rabi season. In 2019-20, production was 291.95 MT, against the target of 291.10 MT (Anonymous, 2020b).

Primary processing of fruits and vegetables refers to the first steps in transforming raw agricultural products into forms more suitable for consumption, storage or further processing. This step generally includes cleaning, sorting, grading, cutting, peeling and packaging of the products. The aim of primary processing is to preserve the nutritional quality, taste and appearance of the products by extending their shelf life and making them more suitable for consumers or ready for secondary processing. For example, fruits may be peeled, cut or peeled, and vegetables may be washed, chopped, or blanched. This step is essential in the agribusiness industry because it has a direct impact on the quality and safety of the final product, ensuring that it meets market requirements, food safety standards and consumer preferences. The efficiency and methods used in primary processing significantly affect overall profitability, product quality and market competitiveness.
Primary processing refers to the initial stages of preparing fruits and vegetables for consumption while preserving their nutritional value, freshness and flavour. This essential step involves various techniques for cleaning, sorting and packaging the produce, ensuring that it reaches consumers in the best possible condition.

Wild relatives of cultivated plants constitute a part of crop genepool, which possess genes that have great potential for their utilization in crop improvement programmes. Wild genepools especially those occurring in biotically disturbed habitats are under threat of genetic erosion and require immediate collection to make use of their wider adaptability, tolerance/resistance to disease, insect-pests, yield, quality attributes and other biotic and abiotic traits. The wild relatives of crop plants occur in all the major phytogeographical regions of India as component of different vegetation types and exhibit variable life forms and habitat specificity. High priority demand is towards collection of those that are at the risk of erosion due to habitat disturbance by manmade/natural causes and over-exploitation of species for commercial use.

Examination of rumen fluid was introduced for clinical diagnosis during the 1950’s. The stomach of ruminant harbor beneficial microbes required for digestion of feed consumed. Stomach maintains an ideal environment (pH 6.8 to 7.2 and temperature 39-40°C) for growth and proliferation of these microfloras. In any of the ruminal disorder this homeostasis get upset resulting in shifting of microbial population (Gram negative to Gram positive) and formation and accumulation of toxic products of abnormal metabolism. This further leads to an array of pathologic process in the body. Hence physical, microbial and biochemical examination of rumen fluid can be considered as an important diagnostic tool for wide variety of disorders.

Canopy management is the manipulation of tree canopies to optimize the production of quality and quantity fruits. The canopy management, particularly its components like tree training and pruning, affects the quantity of sunlight intercepted by trees, as tree shape determines incoming radiation. Light is critical for growth and development of trees and their fruits. The green leaves harvest the sunlight to produce carbohydrates and sugars which are transported to the sites where they are needed – buds, flowers and fruits. Better light penetration into the tree canopy improves tree growth, productivity, yield and fruit quality. The density and orientation of planting also impact light penetration in an orchard (Proietti et al., 2000). Generally, in close planting, quicker shading becomes a problem. An east-west row orientation results in more shading as compared to the western and southern orientation of trees. The problem of a fruit grower is initially to build up a strong and balanced framework of the trees, then equips them with appropriate fruiting.

Cactus pear belongs to Cactaceae family, is widely grown in Mexico and distributed in arid and semi arid tracts of several other parts of the world, such as Australia, Africa, USA and the Mediterranean basin and South East Asia. The future of arid and semi-arid areas of the World largely depends on the development of sustainable agricultural systems based on the use of appropriate crops. Suitable crops are those that successfully cope with water shortage, high temperature, variabilities, poor soils, and easy management to provide food and forage to poor farmers and herders. Opuntias fit most of the above described requirements. In addition, Opuntias play an important ecological role in combating desertification as well as producing fruits and vegetables for human consumption, forage or fodder for livestock, biomass for energy purposes, cochineal for carmine production, and numerous by-products (beverages, vegetarian cheese, drugs and cosmetics). They also provide shelter and food for various wildlife species in arid environments. The fruit known as tuna is a fleshy berry, varying in shape, size, and colour and has a consistent number of hard seeds. The fairly high sugar content and low acidity of the fruit makes it palatable and delicious. Cactus pear was largely treated as underutilized crop by the scientific world until the beginning of 1980, when there was a multiplication of research and symposia, resulting in a large number of publications, including books and book chapters. Recent research finding has, in fact, revealed the high content of some chemical constituents, which can give added value to this crop on a nutritional and bioactive profile. High levels of betalains, taurine, calcium, magnesium, and antioxidants are nutraceutically important. Moreover, some of the constituents show promising in terms of health beneficial quality. Cactus pear products could supplement to nutritional security and human health. The diverse genotypes of Cactus pear have different coloured fruit that show the presence of different antioxidants profiles.

The Indian Society for Protected Cultivation (ISPC) has organized a National Seminar on ‘Advances in Protected Cultivation’ at the NASC Complex, DPS Marg, Pusa, New Delhi, on 21 March 2013, with an objective of collection and collation of scientific advances made in protected cultivation in India and dissemination of these among policy-planners, farmers, students, scientists, industry and other stakeholders. In spite of the fact that protected cultivation is in its state of infancy in the country in terms of scientific engagements, more than 120 delegates from distant parts of the country registered for the seminar besides good number of policy-planners, recognized names in agriculture and higher officials from industry particularly corporate associate life members of the society.

In the inaugural session, Dr Brahma Singh, President, ISPC and Chairman, Organizing Committee welcomed the Chief Guest Padama Bhushan, Dr R S Paroda, formerly Secretary and Director-General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi and Chairman Haryana Kisan Ayog, Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University , Hisar ; Guests of Honour Dr M M Pandey, Deputy Director-General (Agricultural Engineering), ICAR and Dr H S Gupta, Director, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, other dignitaries on and off the dais, delegates, press and media. He also highlighted that this seminar intended to review the advances made in protected cultivation in India with a purpose to accelerate the same. He emphasized that protected cultivation offers opportunities to earn more from the limited land, water and other resources. It also enables production of quality products which fetch more prices and pride, besides being a potential practice for provisioning disease-free quality planting material for horticultural crops.

Sampoorna Grameen Rozgar Yojana (SGRY)

This scheme has been merged with NREGS since February 2006 so only most important points are given below.

1. The Sampoorna Grameen Rozgar Yojana (SGRY) was launched on 25 September, 2001 by merging the on-going schemes of EAS (Employment Assurance Scheme) and the JGSY (Jawahar Gram Samridhi Yojna)
2. Objective was to providing additional wage employment and food security, alongside creation of durable community assets in rural areas.
3. The annual outlay was Rs.10, 000 crore which included 50 lakh tones on food grains.
4. The cash component shared between the Centre and the States in the ratio of 75:25.

Currently, India is Asia’s largest pesticide manufacturer, and ranks twelfth in the world for pesticide use (Abhilash and Singh, 2009) Conventional agricultural practices have a major impact on the environment Some of the issues related to agriculture are climate change, soil depletion, deforestation, pollution, irrigation problems and waste Excessive use of fertilizers such as urea, nitrogen and pesticides has affected air, water, and soil quality 

INTRODUCTION

Adulteration of food consists of substituting it wholly or in part by any cheaper or inferior substance or of removing any of its constituents, wholly or in part, which affects adversely the nature, substance or quality of the food. According to the Indian Prevention of Food Adulteration Act (PFA) 1954, any ingredient which, when present in food, is injurious to health is an adulterant. Thus, according to the PFA definition, many of the food contaminants discussed in the previous section are adulterants and come under the purview of food adulteration.

Adulteration of foods was practised even in ancient times. It was not a serious problem then because business was on a small scale and the transactions involved a large measure of personal accountability. Later, with the increased centralization of food processing and distribution, and corresponding decline in personal accountability, intentional adulteration of food increased. Even in the early nineteenth century, many adulterants were used in articles like pepper, essential oils, vinegar, beverages (coffee, tea, beer, wines), butter, bread, etc. In recent years adulteration of foods has become a serious problem the world over. In western countries there is a rising concern over the safety of the food supply and many remedial actions, both voluntary and enforced, have been taken.

Various components of farming systems are as under

1. Cropping system

A system is set of elements which depend on each other and interacting among themselves. Farming system consists of several enterprises like cropping system, dairying, piggery, poultry, fishery, bee keeping, etc. These enterprises are interrelated. The end products and wastes of one enterprise are used as inputs in other. The wastes of cow, dung used as FYM in crop production and straw is used as feeding material for cow. Bullock is used for field preparation.

Cropping system is an important component of a farming system. It represents cropping pattern used on a farm and their interaction with farm resources, other farm enterprises and available technology which determine their makeup.

Cropping pattern: means the proportion of area under various crops at a point of time in a unit area. It indicates the yearly sequence and spatial arrangement of crops and fallow in an area. It indicates the early sequence and spatial arrangement of crops and fallow in an area. Crop sequence and crop rotation are generally used synonymously. Crop rotation refers to recurrent succession of crops on the same piece of land either in a year or over a longer period of time. Component crops are so chosen so that soil health in not impaired.

1. OVULE DEVELOPMENT

The development of ovule occurs within the ovary, which provides a location for nurture and development of the female gametophyte, its sexual fusion with in the male gametophyte, and embryo development, survival, and eventual regrowth (Fig. 1). Ovule growth begins as a small outgrowth within the nucellus. As megasporogenesis and megagametogenesis continue, the region of the nucellus that is to become the ovule enlarges and differentiates into definite morphological characteristics. Secondary outgrowths, or collars (integuments), soon appear around the periphery of the nucellar outgrowths and envelop it. These usually consist of the inner and outer integuments and ultimately become the testa (seed coat) of the mature ovule.

One such game-changing technology that has emerged in recent years is Artificial Intelligence (AI), which is revolutionising various industries, including crop production. AI is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, particularly computer systems. It encompasses a range of capabilities, including learning, reasoning, problem-solving, perception, and language understanding. When applied to agriculture, AI holds immense promise to transform how we grow crops, optimise resource utilisation, and enhance overall productivity (Fan et al., 2012). By leveraging AI's power, farmers can make data-driven decisions, improve efficiency, and implement precision farming techniques tailored to specific field conditions. By employing AI technologies, it is possible to mitigate the impact on natural ecosystems and enhance worker safety. This, in turn, can contribute to keeping food prices down and ensuring that food production remains in step with the growing global population (Ranjan et al., 2023).

In recent years crop yields have increased significantly due the development of new varieties and cultivars. Certain characteristics, like disease resistance, plant height, yield potential, and maturity period, set one variety of a cultivated crop species apart from other variations of the same species. A key element of contemporary agriculture is the precise identification of crop types, which is essential for plant breeding, seed certification, and the defence of intellectual property rights. The increasing demand for improved crop varieties with increased yield, disease resistance, and environmental adaptability has demanded the development of accurate methods for differentiating cultivars (Hannah, 2024). Traditional techniques of variety identification rely on morphological, biochemical, and agronomic features, which can be altered by environmental conditions and are generally time-consuming and labour-intensive. Various molecular marker systems have been developed to differentiate plant varieties and species of agricultural and horticultural significance. For effective seed quality control programs and the preservation of breeders’ rights, it is essential to define the identity, genetic purity, and stability of plant varieties. According to Yuan et al., (2022), precise variety identification is essential for determining genetic purity, analyzing genetic diversity, improving germplasm for better agronomic qualities, and getting rid of duplicate accessions.
For plant protection and production systems of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and Plant Biodiversity Register (PBR), accurate cultivar identification is crucial. According to Ghosh et al. (2001), molecular marker approaches are pertinent to PBR registration in the following ways. (1) In order to establish a set of comparison cultivars, genetic distance analysis between the candidate cultivar and the current pool of cultivars is performed. (2) The contribution of the comparison cultivar to PBR registration is then determined, and (3) the use of DNA markers to identify cultivars in cases where PBR infringement is alleged is investigated. The capacity of PCR-based markers to amplify particular DNA sequences has made them popular among molecular marker techniques, enabling accurate identification of genetic variations. Although conventional approaches are still employed for Plant Variety Protection (PVP), molecular techniques can be useful adjuncts that increase the effectiveness of accomplishing this goal. During variety certification, additional information from isozyme analysis, RFLP, SSR, SNP, or other genetic fingerprinting methods can be added to cultivar descriptions. Plant varieties can be legally protected on the basis of precise and unique molecular marker data. Crops with little morphological variation benefit greatly from molecular methods. To guarantee complete protection of cultivars, it is ideal to use both botanical and molecular evaluations (Yu and Chung, 2021). Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP), Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD), Simple Sequence Repeat (SSR), and Inter Simple Sequence Repeat (ISSR) are the four main PCR-based markers used in crop variety identification that are the subject of this chapter. In plant genetics, each of these marker systems has special qualities, benefits, and uses. While AFLP markers give high resolution and genome-wide coverage, RAPD markers offer a rapid and economical method of polymorphism detection. Due to their high polymorphism and co-dominant inheritance, SSR markers—also referred to as microsatellites—are perfect for genetic mapping
