Abstract

Noodles are widely consumed throughout the world and their global consumption is second only to bread. In the study, response of reducing agents (cysteine hydrochloride and sodium metabisulphite) and oxidizing agents (potassium bromate and benzoyl peroxide) at 10 and 20 ppm levels on the farinographic and amylographic curve characteristics as well as on the noodle making properties of durum and commercial wheat semolina were investigated according to the AACC (1990) procedure. The farinographic curve characteristics revealed that water absorption was enhanced with increasing levels of reducing agents but decreased with addition of oxidizing agents. However there was no significant change in Dough Development Time in case of durum semolina on addition of reducing agents, but commercial semolina recorded significant changes at 20 ppm level of reducing agent. The best reducing agent for durum and commercial semolina was thus sodium metabisulphite and cysteine hydrochloride respectively. Addition of oxidizing agent potassium bromate at 20 ppm level enhanced stability and was thus chosen as the best oxidizing agent for durum semolina and benzoyl peroxide for commercial semolina. Addition of reducing and oxidizing agents improved yield, appearance, elasticity and extensibility characteristics of instant fresh noodles. The best levels were used in the preparation of noodles on the Italian extruder (NAMAD).

Cutaneous muscle

The cutaneous muscle of the thoracic region is a part of the cutaneous muscle of the trunk. It arises from the interbrachial fascia on the medial surface of the arm and elbow and the lateral aspect of the arm and shoulder. It extends as a broad sheet between the shoulder and arm cranially and the stifle and thigh caudally and then upward to the middle of the dorsum and the tuber coxae.

Fascia of thorax

The fascia of the thoracic region is the caudal continuation of cervical fascia. It is in two layers, the superficial and deep. The superficial fascia is continuous with that of the skin and the cutaneous muscle. The deep fascia forms a well developed sheath for aponeurosis with the longissimus muscle. It is attached medially to the supraspinous ligament and the summits of the spinous processes of the thoracic vertebrae while laterally it is attached to the lateral surface of the ribs. From here it continues ventrolaterally and passes medial to the scapula under the rhomboideus thoracis muscle.

ABSTRACT

The food industry has many the environmental challenges in terms of emerging microbial strains, bacteria, viruses and accumulation of toxic chemicals. Ozone (O₃), environmental bluish gas is an extremely potent oxidant, which is effective solution for disinfection, sanitization for various kinds of products. The application of ozone treatment in agro processing has become green technology with increasing acceptance. It can apply in liquid form, gaseous form to sanitize food, food packaging materials, process water and to disinfect equipments. Ozone can be generated by different methods such as ultraviolet radiation method, corona discharge method etc. In this chapter, ozone properties, its generation, antimicrobial power and advantages with application of ozone has covered. Fruits and vegetables treatment with ozone have shown increased shelf-life and many hazardless advantages of the products. Some products preserved with ozone. Anti microbial activity, no residues in foods, assurance about preservation of sensory, nutritional and physicochemical properties of food have made ozone application as a promising technology for all kinds of food products

Introduction

Organic farming is an inclusive system of producing high-quality products through such processes which have the least impairment on the environment, humans, plants, or animal health. Thus, the term in its essence concentrates on sustainability in the farm management practices and food production system. Chopra et al. (2013) in their study defined organic farming as a management & ecological production system that not only promotes biodiversity but also benefits biological cycles and soil nutrition activities. It focuses on minimal use of pesticides and encourages those farm practices that restore balance, and increase ecological harmony.

It is true in the case of service-oriented institutions like libraries and Information centres. Libraries of the university are a treasure trove of information and knowledge. The library is one of the important components of a university. Library and Information Science (LIS) professionals are the assets of libraries and information centres. Libraries are undergoing transformational changes across the world as a result of disruptive technologies. Libraries are becoming informal, relaxed and collaborative spaces.

9.1. Fruit Spot and Blisters

9.1.1. Colletotrichum

The pathogen forms papery or watery brownish areas at the site of infection, with a large number of acervuli on the infected parts. In the acervulus, the conidiophores are slightly curved, short, and club-shaped. The conidia are hyaline and falcate, borne singly on the conidiophores. Numerous black colored and thick-walled setae are also produced in the acervulus. In culture, most isolates produce cottony, fluffy, or suppressed colonies (Fig. 9.1).

Food Science is one of the ancient sciences and the genesis originates to the very beginning of human civilization. The advent of food science was associated with practice and observation by humans before establishment of scientific concepts. The ancient man knew that roasting or smoking of meat improves the edible quality and digestibility. As a consequence, he started practicing the same much before the reasons for the same could be established. Many of the modern preservation concepts had their origin in prehistoric period itself as humans could use techniques such as dehydration, fermentation and pickling to their advantage to improve the sensory attributes of the products and also to enhance their shelf life. Humans during the Pre-Neolithic period about 2,50,000 years before used fire for cooking meat. During the Paleolithic period humans not only roasted food but also developed grinding, pounding and drying. During the Mesolithic era, humans were desperate for food and got involved in extensive hunting and fishing. During the same time domestication of animals took place and animal husbandry became a reality (Stewart and Amerine 1982). The Neolithic period made qualitative changes in the food habits of humans and they changed from a food gathering and hunting society to one of food production (Heizer and Elsasser 1980).

The first step of sexual reproduction (Flowering) is of paramount importance in agriculture, horticulture and plant breeding. The change from the vegetative state to the reproductive state is one of the most dramatic events. Flowering leads to an exciting succession of events like anthesis, fruit set, fruit development, maturation and ripening. It provides for the propagation of the species and assists in crop improvement through genetic recombination. Plant growth regulators have remained an important component in horticulture, agriculture from time immemorial, because they were effective means of quantitative as well as qualititative improvement in growth and development of crops. Plant growth and development as well as the responses to environmental factors, are highly regulated by complex and coordinated action of the endogenous hormones (Reddy and Bhagwan, 2014).

Introduction

India is the second largest producer of fruits and vegetables in the world. Fruits and vegetables are the reservoir of vital nutrients. Being highly perishable, 20-40% of the total production of fruits and vegetables goes waste from the time of harvesting till they reach the consumers. It is, therefore, necessary to make them available for consumption throughout the year in processed or preserved form and to save the sizeable amount of losses. At present, about 2% of the total produce is processed in India mainly for domestic consumption. The most alarming situation is the post harvest losses of fruits and vegetables worth approximately Rs. 18,500 crores per annum. Fruits and vegetables have great potential for value addition and diversification to give a boost to food industry, create employment opportunities and give better returns to the farmers.

Post harvest management of fruits and vegetables plays a significant role in achieving the target of nutritional security to the ever-growing population as well as to meet the requirement of processing industry and export trade.  With the advent and development of food consciousness amongst the consumers, to elaborate food standards, codes of hygienic practice, are necessary to maintain the quality of the food products.

Abstract

In the present study, a novel work on comparison of physico-chemical characterization and bacterial diversity of wheat straw compost and vermicomposting has been initiated in the tropical region. Wheat straw compost shows lesser pH, EC, TDS, Organic Carbon, Total Nitrogen and Total Phosphorus than vermicompost whereas there was an increase in Total Nitrogen, Total Phosphorus and Electrical Conductivity and a drop in the pH, TDS and Organic Carbon of the vermicompost as the composting progressed from 0, 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 days. Strains of Bacillus spp. and Thermoactinomycetes were screened from the wheat straw compost, which are ecologically important and have commercial potential for enzyme production. These strains were able to degrade cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin and exhibited cellulase activity. Enterobacter aerogenes, Micrococcus luteus and E.coli were isolated from the gut of Eudrilis eugeniae which help in the transformation of biodegradable waste materials into valuable compost.

ABSTRACT

Packaging plays an important role in food industry. The huge waste of packaging generated every year poses a great threat to the environment. The recycling and reuse of the food packaging is limited. Plastic packaging in particular are the serious concern with respect to their disposal. This is the high time when eco-friendly green technologies for the food packaging should be explored. This chapter discusses various possibilities to use the green and eco-friendly approaches for food packaging.

Fungi

Definition

Fungi are eukaryotic, spore bearing, achlorophyllus, heterotrophic and thallophytic plants with varied forms and habitats, representing heterothallic or homothallic types of sexuality with characteristic sexual and /or asexual means of reproduction without tissue differentiation.

9.1. Fungi useful against plant disease pathogen

9.1.1. Trichoderma viride

Trichoderma viride (Fig. 231) fungus is used as a bio-fungicide. It is used for seed and soil treatment for suppression of various diseases caused by fungal pathogens. It is also a pathogen in its own right,causing green mould rot of onion.

The fungicidal activity makes T. viride useful as a biological control agent against plant pathogenic fungi. It has been shown to provide protection against pathogens like Rhizoctonia, Pythium and Armillaria.

It is found naturally in soil and is effective as a seed dressing bioinoculant in the control of seed and soil-borne diseases including Rhizoctonia solani, Macrophomina phaseolina and Fusarium species. When it is applied to the seed, it colonizes the seed surface and kills not only the pathogens present on the cuticle, but also provides protection against soil-borne pathogens.

An emerging, promising, affordable, and sustainable method of providing micronutrients to a large population with limited access to varied meals and other micronutrient therapies is referred to as biofortification. The biofortified tuber crops, particularly sweet potato, cassava, yam, and taro, are giving the targeted people adequate amount of nutrients. When genetic diversity is present in a gene pool of targeted crop, biofortification through conventional breeding approaches has been most successful. The breeding strategies used to elevate micronutrients include pre-breeding, large-scale germplasm screening, molecular marker development and understanding genetic control and Genotype x Environment interaction (GxE).

Introduction

Crop modeling in agriculture involves utilising quantitative data on eco physiological processes to forecast plant growth and development, leveraging environmental conditions and management inputs. These models simulate how crops respond whether in terms of growth, yield, or other factors to a dynamic interplay of elements like management practices, water, weather, and soil parameters throughout a growing season. They serve as computational tools emulating the intricate growth patterns of crops by mathematically representing various facets within the cropping system (Nath et al., 2023). The roots of crop modeling trace back to the 1960s, when researchers began integrating physical and biological principles to model agricultural systems. These models heavily rely on measurable inputs, obtained via sensors, machinery, or manual measurements, to predict desired outputs such as plant growth, crop yield, soil nitrogen levels, or crop staging.

Crop Modeling

Crop modeling involves the creation of mathematical or computational models that represent the growth, development, and yield of crops. These models are based on scientific principles and empirical data, aiming to simulate and predict various aspects of crop behaviour under specific conditions. The primary purpose of crop modeling is to provide a theoretical framework for understanding and predicting crop responses to environmental factors, management practices, and genetic variations.

The distinctions that differentiate one genotype from another are encoded in their hereditary material i.e., DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). DNA is packaged into chromosomal pairs, with one strand of genetic material derived from each parent. The genes that govern a plant’s traits are situated on distinct portions of each chromosome (King and Stansfield, 1990). Depending on the context, a genetic marker may be defined as: (a) a chromosomal landmark that facilitates the tracing of a specific DNA region; (b) a distinct DNA segment with a known genomic position; or (c) a gene whose phenotypic expression is easily observable, and used to identify an individual and used as a probe to spot a nucleus, chromosomes, or locus. Molecular markers are distinguishable DNA sequences located at specific loci within the genome, inherited according to the established principles of inheritance from one generation to the subsequent generation. The presence of several molecular approaches, along with their distinct concepts and procedures, necessitates meticulous evaluation when selecting one or more marker types or loci (King and Stansfield, 1990). Various molecular markers have been described, based on mode of transmission, mode of gene action and method of analysis. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are variations in DNA sequences characterized by a single nucleotide (A, T, C, or G) that differs among individuals, serving as biological markers for the identification of genes linked to phenotypes. The genome sequences in public domain from various organisms have facilitated the examination of sequence variations among individuals, among cultivars, and among subspecies. These investigations demonstrated that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are prevalent and dispersed across the genome across numerous species, including plants (Drenkard et al., 2000; Nasu et al., 2002).The prevalence of SNPs polymorphisms in plant genomes renders the SNP marker system a valuable marker technology for mapping, marker-assisted breeding, and map-based cloning (Rafalski, 2002a; Batley et al., 2003).A single nucleotide polymorphic (SNP) marker is a single base alteration in a DNA sequence, with a typical alternative of two possible nucleotides at a specific position. In recent years, numerous SNP genotyping methodologies have been established, utilizing diverse techniques for allelic discrimination and detection platforms (Rafalski, 2002b; Vignal et al., 2002; Sobrino et al., 2005; Tost and Gut, 2005).At now, SNPs are preferred for DNA fingerprinting, investigations of genetic diversity and association studies, phylogenetic linkages, studies of evolutionary history of species and population, genome-wide association mapping, and genomic selection. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are the most prevalent and reliable markers, suitable for automated high-throughput genotyping, highly reproducible, and capable of identifying variants, therefore superseding older markers due to their high throughput, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness (Alkan et al, 2011; Amdadul et al, 2016; Close et al., 2009; Muñoz-Amatriaín et al, 2014; Li et al., 2020; Qiuetal., 2012). The swift advancement and use of NGS technology have led to the creation and application of diverse reduced-representation genome sequencing methods for SNP genotyping. The vast natural and cultural resources of India contribute to the country's abundant growth. Taking advantage of this, the tourist industry in India has experienced one of the most rapid growth rates seen anywhere in the world. The travel and tourism industry accounts for a significant portion of overall economic growth around the world, and over the past nine years, India's rate of economic expansion has consistently been higher than that of the whole economy. In 2019, the sector expanded at a pace of 3.5 percent, which was much higher than the world GDP growth rate of 2.5 percent. The tourist industry has a considerable bearing on India's overall economic performance. India is ranked as one of the top ten tourist destinations in the world. The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) disclosed information indicating that the Indian tourism sector contributed INR 194 billion to India's GDP in 2019. Additionally, the tourism industry in India supported 87.5 million jobs, which accounted for 12.75 percent of total employment. However, for the past two years, due to COVID-19, the tourism sector worldwide, as well as in India, has faced huge losses and is in distress. So, it’s the right time to focus on developing tourism under different wings.

Floriculture, the science and art of cultivating flowering and ornamental plants is a dynamic and flourishing sector within global agriculture that encompasses a broad spectrum of activities including the production of cut f lowers, potted plants, bedding plants and foliage. This specialized branch of horticulture not only contributes significantly to the aesthetic enhancement of our surroundings by beautifying homes, gardens and public spaces and is integral to interior design and event decoration but also plays a vital role in economic development, rural employment and international trade. The global f loriculture market is driven by the increasing consumer demand for flowers and ornamental plants, which are integral to cultural traditions, celebrations and everyday life. Flowers symbolize emotions and milestones, making them indispensable in events ranging from weddings and funerals to festivals and personal gifts. Today the traditional flowers are grown in area of 283 thousand hectare producing 2295 thousand tonnes of loose flower and 833 thousand tonnes of cut flowers (Ministry of Agriculture and farmer welfares 2021-22). India plays significant role in the trade of potted flowering plants, ornamentals foliage plants for landscaping, turf grasses, cut foliage, dry flowers, specialty f lowers, annual flower seeds and fillers. India exported flower produce, worth Rs. 707.81 crore (APEDA 2022-23) that consist of fresh cut flowers (to Europe, Japan, Australia and Middle East, USA), loose flowers (for expatriate Indians in the Gulf and Europe), cut foliage (to Europe), dry flowers (to USA, Europe, Japan, Russia and Australia) and potted plants (Middle East) besides seeds and planting material. The major market for domestic flowers is in Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Chennai, Pune, Bangalore and Hyderabad etc. are the major market for domestic flowers in India.

5.1 Fundamentals of Plant Nomenclature
(A) Plant Nomenclature
5.1.1 Definitions
Assignment of definite names to plants is called nomenclature. In the present botanical world, the nomenclature involves the principles governed by rules formulated and adopted by International Botanical Congresses. The rules developed by IBC are listed formally in a code called International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (Voss et al., 1983), abbreviated as ICBN. The major goal of ICBN is to provide one correct name for each taxon. Taxa (singular, taxon) are the taxonomic groups of any rank. The ascending hierarachy of taxa include species, genus, family, order, class and division.
5.1.2 Who is a Nomenclaturist?
A nomenclaturist is a taxonomist who assigns names to new taxa, determines the right names for old taxa according to the rules of International Code of Botanical Nomenclature, and finalizes the right name for a specimen according to an established system of classification.
