Introduction
Biotechnology is a rapidly evolving field that harnesses biological systems, organisms, and cellular components to develop products and processes beneficial to humanity. In fisheries and aquaculture, biotechnology has revolutionized species identification, genetic enhancement, disease management, and sustainable production practices. By integrating molecular biology, microbiology, and genetic engineering, this multidisciplinary science has enhanced aquaculture productivity and contributed to food security. The advent of recombinant DNA (rDNA) technology, along with genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and genome editing, has transformed fish biotechnology by enabling precise genetic modifications, improving growth rates, and enhancing disease resistance.
A significant milestone in aquaculture biotechnology was the FDA approval of AquaAdvantage salmon, a genetically modified salmon designed to grow faster than its conventional counterparts. This approval marked the beginning of transgenic animal food production, demonstrating the potential of genetic engineering to enhance food production efficiency. In addition, genome-edited fish, such as the CRISPR-Cas9 modified tiger puffer and red sea bream, have been approved in Japan, further showcasing the advancements in gene-editing technologies for improving aquaculture species. These developments highlight the increasing acceptance of biotechnological innovations in fisheries, paving the way for more sustainable and productive aquaculture practices.This chapter focuses on the fundamental principles and methodologies of rDNA technology, molecular techniques, and recent advancements in biotechnology, emphasizing their implications in fisheries and aquaculture.

Abstract
Food insecurity and malnutrition are on the rise globally, impacting millions, especially in rural regions where extreme poverty and food insecurity are deeply rooted. Vulnerable groups, including women, youth, and indigenous peoples, are disproportionately affected. Producing foo  that meets dietary needs and ensuring its availability in the future is essential for sustainable development and food sustainability. Addressing the growing global food security concerns and supporting the increasing population requires the continual expansion of plant-based proteins’ significance. Legumes are excellent sources of proteins, carbohydrates, and both soluble and insoluble dietary fibers. Legumes, with their high dietary fiber and low-fat content, help maintain body weight and lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. They are also rich in essential minerals such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and iron, and provide important vitamins like folate, thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), and niacin (B3). Additionally, pulses contain various phytochemicals, including phenolics, flavonoids, phytates, lectins, tannins, saponins, oxalates, enzyme inhibitors, phytosterols, and antimicrobial peptides, which offer numerous potential health benefits. These phytochemicals exhibit anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antimicrobial, and anti-ulcerative properties. Incorporating legumes into agricultural systems can foster more sustainable and climate-resilient farming practices. In developing countries, legumes are often used to supplement cereals or starchy foods to combat protein-energy malnutrition, as animal proteins tend to be expensive in these regions.

Introduction
Climate change has emerged as a vital worldwide concern in contemporary times. It is an incontrovertible fact that the climate has changed in the past, is currently experiencing changes, and will persist in changing irrespective of the extent of mitigation efforts invested. Defined as a substantial shift in weather patterns over a period ranging from a few decades to millions of years, climate change is a phenomenon of critical importance that commands our attention and action. Fisheries and aquaculture are becoming a global industry in terms of food production and employment- enerating sectors. Millions of people in India rely on fisheries for a living, either directly or indirectly, as subsistence fisheries, typically located at the bottom of the economic pyramid, with lower earnings, disorganised jobs, and greater socioeconomic risk (Dutta et al., 2007). The fisheries sector contributes 1.03 per cent of the Indian GDP. Climate change badly hampered the food production sector, the fisheries sector is also not untouched due to its dependency on local weather and climate parameters (Temperature, Precipitation, humidity etc.). In its third assessment report, which was released in 2001, the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) came to the conclusion that new or altered insect pest incidence and decreased crop yields in most tropical and sub-tropical regions would disproportionately affect the poorest nations (IPCC, 2001). To meet the food needs of a growing population in the face of climate change, climate-smart aquaculture (CSA) is an integrated approach to improving technological, policy, and investment conditions to promote sustainable agricultural development for food security (FAO, 2015).

Abstract
The United Nations predicts that by 2050, the global population will reach 9.6 billion, leading to urgent challenges such as ensuring food security and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Climate change, coupled with biotic and abiotic pressures, will significantly impact global food production. Despite advances in agriculture, malnutrition remains a widespread issue, affecting millions, especially in developing countries. Protein-energy malnutrition, which affects over 170 million children and women, poses a significant threat to national economic development, increasing healthcare costs and reducing productivity. One key solution to combating malnutrition lies in promoting legumes (pulses), which are nutrient-dense, protein-rich, and vital for both human and animal consumption. Pulses have been a staple in diets
for centuries, providing essential nutrients like protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. They are not only beneficial for human health, reducing the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, but they also contribute to sustainable agriculture. Legumes can fix atmospheric nitrogen, reducing the need for synthetic fertilizers, improving soil health, and increasing agricultural productivity. However, despite their benefits, pulse production lags behind other staple crops like cereals. With proper management, legumes could play a vital role in alleviating global hunger, particularly in developing countries. Increased awareness and efforts to incorporate legumes into farming systems and daily diets could help meet the growing global demand for nutritious, sustainable food.

The growing population has a direct impact on fisheries. The demand for food derived from aquatic origin is increasing rapidly. The fish production trend and world population over the years are shown in Figures 1 and 2, respectively.The production from culture-based fisheries has surpassed the capture-based fisheries (FAO, 2024). Global aquaculture production is one of the fastestgrowing
sectors among global food systems. With the increasing demand for fish and seafood, there is increasing pressure to find sustainable solutions for feeding farmed fish (Tacon et al., 2011). Traditional fish feed, primarily derived from wild-caught fish (Fishmeal) and land-based crops, presents several environmental and economic challenges. These include overfishing, deforestation, and rising feed costs, which threaten the sustainability of the aquaculture industry. Hence, there is an urgent need for alternate feed ingredients (Olsen and Hasan, 2012).
The feed has largest environmental impact in the intensive culture system. Hence, more prominence has to be given to a selection of fish feed ingredients, which can contribute to reduce the environmental impact and target on growth of the animal. Intensification should go in hand with sustainability of the system and feed ingredients play a significant role in it. In response to these concerns, microorganisms have emerged as a promising solution to enhance fish nutrition in a more sustainable manner. Microorganisms, such as bacteria, yeast, algae, and fungi, can be a source of feed ingredients with various advantages, including improving nutrient digestibility, and reducing the environmental footprint of fish farming.

In recent decades, aquaculture is the fastest growing sector and has become a vital food source to meet the global growing demand for protein requirements. This sector provides protein source, healthy fat, and essential micronutrients for the people around the world. It offers local employment, livelihood, high export earnings, supporting national GDP. Improved aquaculture practices
have increased fin and shellfish production, decreasing dependance on wild seed and fish stocks. Global fish consumption increased by 3% between 1961 and 2019 (FAO, 2023). Nanotechnology is a promising solution, offering unique properties at smaller dimensions (1-100 nm) with novel applications (Matteucci et al., 2018; Shaalan et al., 2015). Recent efforts focus on health management, fish and shellfish development, seafood processing, and water treatment.

Abstract
Remote sensing and image analysis have emerged as essential tools in modern agriculture, particularly for plant protection in grain-based legume cropping systems. These technologies are increasingly valuable in addressing challenges such as climate change, pest infestations, and the demand for sustainable practices. Grain legumes, including peas, beans, lentils, and chickpeas, are vital for global food security and soil health due to their protein content and nitrogen-fixing capabilities. However, their productivity is often threatened by pests, diseases, and weeds. Remote sensing allows for early detection of crop stress through analysis of specific wavelengths of light, enabling farmers to identify issues before visible symptoms appear. Tools like the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) provide insights into crop health, allowing for timely and targeted interventions. Hyperspectral and multispectral imaging further enhance disease detection by identifying physiological changes in crops that are not visible to the naked eye. In addition to disease monitoring, remote sensing aids in pest management by detecting changes in plant temperature profiles and utilizing drone surveillance for real-time data collection. Image analysis complements these efforts by offering detailed insights into crop conditions, enabling precision agriculture practices that minimize environmental impact and reduce costs. By integrating remote sensing and image analysis with other technologies like GIS and IoT, farmers can achieve more efficient, sustainable farming practices, ultimately leading to higher yields and better protection for grain legume crops. Abstract
The growing global population has intensified farming practices, increasing the use of fossil fuels and agrochemicals. With limited land and the need to enhance food production, balancing environmental impact, especially carbon footprints, is crucial. Climate-smart mitigation options, with a prime emphasis on crop diversification, can help agriculture adapt to anomalous weather patterns and build resilience. Legumes offer a sustainable solution by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, as they produce 5-7 times less gases per unit area compared to other crops. They aid in carbon sequestration, with soil carbon estimates of 7.21 g kg-1 of dry matter, and save fossil energy by decreasing nitrogen fertilizer use, reducing CO2 emissions by 277 kg ha-1 per year. Legumes play a key role in low-emission farming systems due to their ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen, reducing dependence on energy-intensive synthetic fertilizers. They improve soil health, enhance soil structure, and support carbon sequestration. Integrating legumes into crop rotations reduces the need for chemical pesticides and fertilizers. Additionally, legumes can be used in food, feed, and biofuels, lowering reliance on more carbon-intensive resources. Embracing legumes in farming systems promotes sustainability improves soil health, and considerably reduces the overall environmentalimpact of agriculture.

Automated feeding systems have significantly improved the efficiency and sustainability of aquaculture operations by ensuring precise feed distribution, reducing waste, and enhancing fish growth rates (Fig. 1). These systems integrate advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and smart sensors to optimize feeding schedules and feed amounts based on fish behaviour, water quality, and environmental conditions.

Abstract
The cultivation of grain legumes is expanding globally because of their diverse applications as food for humans, feed for livestock, and raw materials for industrial purposes. Legumes contribute significantly to sustainable agricultural practices due to their unique ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen through symbiosis with rhizobia bacteria in their root nodules. Incorporating legumes into cropping systems in place of traditional cereal-cereal rotations can significantly enhance agricultural sustainability due to their multiple benefits. Their role in nutrient cycling, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus, ensures that subsequent crops benefit from improved soil nutrient availability, making legumes an essential component of crop rotations and intercropping systems. Additionally, legumes improve soil structure, organic matter content, and decrease the environmental impact associated with excessive fertilizer use, such as greenhouse gas emissions and water pollution. With the increasing demand for plant-based foods and the economic challenges of fertilizing cereal crops, grain legumes are anticipated to play a more prominent role in cropping systems, especially in regions where fertilizer availability and affordability are limited. It includes studies on improving nitrogen fixation efficiency, enhancing phosphorus uptake, and developing varieties that are better adapted to specific environmental conditions and cropping systems. Additionally, there is a need to identify the most suitable legume species and varieties for different regions and cropping patterns to ensure maximum productivity and sustainability.

Abstract
The rapid increase in global food demand, driven by fast population growth, has made it challenging to provide nutritionally balanced diets. Pulses offer a promising solution to these challenges by delivering significant nutritional and physiological benefits. Pulses such as chickpeas, green gram, peas, horse gram, beans, lentils, black gram, and others are excellent sources of protein (190-260 g kg−1), carbohydrates (600-630 g kg−1), dietary fibers, and bioactive compounds. The phytochemicals found in pulses, including flavonoids, phenolics, tannins, phytates, saponins, oxalates, peptides, and enzyme inhibitors, offer numerous health benefits. Pulses, essential to human diets for centuries, have seen historically low consumption levels due to underappreciation of their nutritional value. Recognizing their significance, the United Nations designated 10 February as World Pulses Day, and declared the year, 2016 as International Year of Pulses emphasizing their role in promoting healthy diets, sustainable food production, and food security. India is the largest producer of pulses in the world accounting for 25% of the global pulse production. The production and productivity of pulses have slightly decreased due to great emphasis to rice and wheat crops. To boost pulse production, India has implemented initiatives like the National Food Security Mission and policies to support farmers, including Minimum Support Prices (MSP) and welfare schemes integrating pulses. These efforts aim to enhance pulse cultivation, ensure food security, and improve farmer incomes, addressing the demand-supply gap and declining per capita availability of pulses.

Animal bristles are natural fibers derived from the hair or fur of various animals, mainly pigs and horses. Celebrated for their distinctive characteristics, these bristles have been employed for centuries across a range of uses. Bristles consist of stiff, wiry hairs from pigs, hogs, or boars, and are typically utilized in the manufacture of different types of brushes. They are predominantly harvested from the back, neck, and tail, as the hairs located on the flank and belly are too short for effective use. Pig bristles are characterized by their coarse, stiff texture and tapered shape, often featuring split or flagged tips. These flagged tips improve their efficiency in paint and varnish applications due to their capacity to retain paint effectively.
Shaving brushes crafted from soft bristles surpass synthetic options owing to their enhanced water absorption and retention abilities. In our nation, bristles are primarily obtained from local and crossbreed pigs. Indian bristles are noted  for their coarseness and durability, although their longer flagged tips (whichcan constitute up to 30% of their total length) necessitate trimming prior to use, potentially diminishing their overall value.
Bristles are harvested from live pigs or boars once or twice annually, as well as from slaughtered or deceased animals. In certain bacon processing facilities, bristles are also collected by shaving the skins of slaughtered animals postscalding. Those obtained from live pigs generally exhibit superior lustre and resilience compared to those from deceased animals.

The processing of wool encompasses multiple stages that convert raw fleece into functional fabric or yarn. Each phase in the wool processing procedure is vital in influencing the ultimate quality and appropriateness of the wool product for diverse uses. Introduction
Grain legumes or pulses are a group of crops which belong to family Fabaceae, are primarily grown for their edible seeds. The common examples of grain legumes include: bean (Phaseolus spp.), lentil (Lens culinaris), chickpea (Cicer arietinum), pea (Pisum sativum), soybean (Glycine max), lupin (Lupinus spp.), broad bean (Vicia faba), igeon pea (Cajanus cajan), grass pea (Lathyrus sativus), black gram (Vigna mungo), green gram (Vigna radiata). Grain legumes can play a significant role to address future global food security, environmental sustainability, and nutritional needs. Pulses are the second most important food crop after cereals and an important source of proteins, vitamins, and minerals. Pulses are popularly known as “Poor man’s meat” and “Rich man’s vegetable”. Pulses contain a high amount of protein (20-25%), which is almost double and triple of the protein content of wheat and rice, respectively and so can contribute significantly to the nutritional security of the country. Besides, they may serve the purpose of protein rich fodder and good quality green manure crop. Pulses can thrive well in low and marginal land with less external inputs. They act as erosion resisting crops because of its deep tap root
system, leafy growth, and close spacing. Pulses can also be grown as paira crop or inter-crop in different growing situations. Being a leguminous crop, it can fix atmospheric nitrogen with the help of its root nodules, resulting in low requirement of external fertilizer. Keeping the importance of pulses in mind, United Nation’s Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) also declared 2016 as the ‘International Year of Pulses’.

Wool is a natural fiber that possesses numerous outstanding characteristics, rendering it both functional and visually appealing. Nevertheless, not all wool is created equal; there exists considerable variation in the quality found in the marketplace. This explains the significant fluctuations in price, as some wool is of superior quality and therefore commands a higher price. Various factors influence the quality of this fiber and, consequently, its value. Below is a list of some of these factors.
a) The diameter of the wool fiber is the most critical factor affecting its quality and price. Generally, merino wool is regarded as the highest quality due to its fine texture, which produces an exceptionally soft fiber. In simple terms, the finer the wool, the greater its worth.
b) Consistency in fiber diameter is another vital aspect; the more uniform the fiber, the higher its value.
c) The colour of wool also plays a significant role in determining its value. Wool that is white or off-white can accommodate a wider array of dyes used in fabric manufacturing.
d) Staple strength is a measure of the fiber’s capacity to endure the production process. A higher staple strength results in less waste during manufacturing. Wool is a valuable by-product of sheep, differentiated from hair by its enhanced elasticity, flexibility, and curliness. The quality of wool is affected by factors such as shrinking, strengthening, and felting conditions. In their natural form, wool fibers are coated with wool grease (sweat) and wool soap or yolk (suint), which are secreted by specialized glands to preserve the wool’s condition. Wool is classified into three primary types of fibers:

Classifying wool is crucial in the textile sector for upholding quality standards, enhancing processing techniques, and ensuring that wool satisfies particular market demands. Precise classification aids in choosing the appropriate wool type for a variety of products, ranging from apparel to carpets, and guarantees uniformity and performance across diverse applications.
Classification of Wool: Wool is categorized in a manner akin to hides and skins, based on its intended application. It is divided into three primary types according to fibre length: combing wool, clothing wool, and carpet wool. Long fibres are combed and twisted to produce worsted yarn, whereas shorter fibres are carded and blended in various directions to create woollens. Carpet wool is characterized by an average fineness of 30 to 50 μm and a medullation percentage between 15% and 68%. The quality of wool is influenced by factors such as breeding conditions, climatic conditions, diet, and overall care. For example, excessive moisture can strip natural grease, while colder climates lead to tougher, heavier fibres. Consequently, wool can be classified in two distinct manners:
A. By the sheep from which it is sourced, and
B. By fleece

In this context, grain legumes demonstrate considerable climate resilience. Their drought tolerance, heat resistance, and ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen make them well-suited to withstand climate stress. Legumes exhibit mechanisms such as deep root systems, efficient water use, and adaptability to diverse environmental conditions, contributing to their robustness in the face of climate variability. To bolster the role of grain legumes in climate-resilient agriculture, climate-smart practices and technological advancements are essential. These include optimizing planting strategies, adopting water-efficient methods, and breeding for improved resilience traits. Addressing challenges such as climate variability, pest pressures, and resource limitations is crucial for maintaining the benefits of legumes. Composed mainly of keratin, a protein created by amino acids linked through peptide bonds, wool possesses unique characteristics due to its sulphur content, setting it apart from other animal fibres. The fibres of wool are crimped and elastic, growing in clusters. This crimping generates air pockets that provide insulation, while the outer surface features overlapping, serrated scales that enable the fibres to interlock and create felt. For thousands of years, wool has been utilized as a textile because of these distinctive attributes.
Properties of Wool Fiber: The properties of wool fibre include the following:
1. Composition of amino acids: Wool fibres consist of amino acids that form the protein keratin.
2. Absorbency: Wool exhibits high absorbency, which allows it to effectively take in moisture.
3. Moisture retention: Wool can hold a considerable amount of moisture in relation to its weight.
4. Thermal insulation: Wool fibres offer superior warmth compared to many other fibres due to their crimp and structure.
5. Chemical resistance: Wool fibres show limited resistance to alkalis (such as strong soaps or detergents) but are resistant to acids.

Abstract
Understanding genetic diversity is essential for achieving genetic improvement and conservation of grain legumes. These crops serve as important pulses grown and consumed all over the world, especially in Africa, South East Asia and America. Legumes serve as a good source of carbohydrates, oil, fibre and proteins. Grain legumes are a major source of food and nutrition globally. However, it has not been possible to enhance gain legume production to the required level, primarily due to the narrow genetic base of most of the legume crops, coupled with changing climatic conditions. Most grain legumes are lacking in desired plant ideotypes and resistance sources for various biotic and abiotic stresses. The genetic diversity conserved in gene banks globally is a major resource for crop breeding programs, but it
is utilized only marginally. Therefore, in order to broaden the genetic base of grain legume crops and enhance the genetic gains made in improvement programs, conventional approaches and modern scientific tools should be integrated in a phased and carefully judged manner. The first phase should focus on the search for desired traits and the infusion of diversity into the cultivated gene pool through use of landraces and CWRs. The second phase should focus on the utilization of advanced selection tools, such as genomics, high-throughput precision phenotyping, and artificial intelligence, to exploit the hidden potential of the available genetic diversity; and the third phase should involve technologies such as mutational breeding, genome editing, and transgenic technologies to improve, modify any novel or alien traits that are not available in the entire crop gene pool. We presume that enrichment of the genetic diversity of cultivated grain legume gene pools, along with simultaneous improvements in their yield and plant type with the aid of advanced scientific tools, will enhance grain legume crop yields to the required level.

Most textile fibers are slender, flexible, robust, and elastic, allowing them to stretch and revert to their original form.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Industrial Revolution brought about significant advancements in machinery for processing natural fibers, resulting in increased fiber production. This era saw the introduction of regenerated cellulosic fibers such as rayon, which is produced by dissolving and purifying cellulose, followed by the emergence of synthetic fibers like nylon, which began to compete with the supremacy of natural fibers in the textile industry. Synthetic fibers, with their distinct advantages, started to supplant natural fibers across various sectors. In reaction to this shift, there was a surge in research aimed at enhancing natural fibers through improved strains, advanced production techniques, and modified properties of yarns and fabrics. Nevertheless, synthetic fibers, being more economical and less labourintensive, captured a larger share of the market.

Abstract
Global food production needs to double by 50% by the middle of the 21st century to ensure food and nutritional security for 9 billion people. Climate change, particularly atmospheric CO2 and temperature, has a complex impact on sustainable food security. Climate change is a significant constraint on legume production globally, which is a crucial food, feed, and fodder source. Legumes fix atmospheric nitrogen through bacteria in root nodules, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and boosting soil C-sequestration. Climate change positively impacts grain legumes by allowing them to allocate above-ground
photosynthates into below-ground parts (nodules), improving rhizospheres’ activities, plant biomass and nutrient use efficacy. However, temperature can also negatively affect grain legumes, leading to flower abortion and abnormal pod filling. However, climate models predict more extreme events in the future, affecting legume growth and development. Heat stress, elevated CO2 concentration, drought, and rainfall variability impact legume crop production, requiring adaptation options. Results show that legumes with C3 fixation pathways show higher photosynthesis, reduced photorespiration, biomass production, and water use efficiency under atmospheric CO2. However, temperature increases lead to faster development, shorter life cycles, and lower yields. Legumes can cope with atmospheric CO2 up to
1000 ppm by storing sucrose and starch. Protein synthesis and water stress also help legumes adapt to changing climates. To achieve targeted yields in changing climatic conditions, agronomic and genetic interventions must be integrated. Targeted breeding programs should select high-yielding, biotic stress-resistant, and abiotic stress-tolerant genotypes adapted to atmospheric CO2 and temperature conditions. Integrating grain legumes with desirable traits can provide resilience against climate change.

Likewise, innovative approaches should be employed to make use of slaughterhouse waste, which consists of ruminal contents, blood, urine, and trimmings of meat and fat, in order to enhance their value. It is vital to discover comprehensive and inventive methods for utilizing all inedible animal parts. The proper management of slaughterhouse waste not only mitigates pollution but can also generate fuel for lighting and heating within the abattoir itself.
In rural and suburban areas of India, buffalo and cow dung are frequently dried into cakes and utilized as cooking fuel. Furthermore, dung compost contributes to the enhancement of soil humus and fertility, with approximately two-thirds of dung being used as fuel and one-third as fertilizer. Cow dung, which is abundant in organic matter and nitrogen, is also traditionally employed as a floor plaster. These by-products can be classified as either edible or inedible. The edible by-products primarily consist of tissues and bones extracted from poultry carcasses. Conversely, inedible by-products comprise hatchery waste, which includes infertile eggs, deceased embryos, dead chicks, and eggshells, as well as feathers, blood, offal, fat, and manure. These by-products are typically divided into three categories:
1. By-products from the production phase, which consist of litter and manure sourced from the farm.
2. By-products from hatcheries which include materials originating from the hatchery, such as the shells of hatched eggs, dead embryos, infertile eggs, and deceased chicks.
3. By-products from the poultry processing plant, which encompass blood, feathers, offal (including feet, heads, and intestinal tracts), condemned birds etc.
1. By-products from the production phase: Poultry litter and manure from caged layers are extensively utilized as a protein supplement in the diets of both poultry and livestock. Following sterilization and dehydration, poultry manure can be integrated into feed, containing approximately 27-29% protein. It can be incorporated into the diets of broilers at levels of up to 20% and layers at 25%. In addition to their application in animal feed, poultry manure and litter are valuable as a ‘surface dressing’ for agricultural fields. They function not only as effective fertilizers but also improve soil texture. One ton of deep litter yields approximately 29.48 kg of nitrogen (equivalent to 136.08 to 147.42 kg of ammonium sulphate), 20.41 kg of phosphorus (equivalent to 113.40 to 136.08 kg of ordinary superphosphate), and 20.41 kg of potash (equivalent to 45.34 kg of potassium), along with 6.80 kg of magnesium, 6.80 kg of sodium, and 27.21 kg of calcium. Furthermore, poultry manure is rich in trace elements such as boron, copper, iron, sulphur, and zinc.

Novel genomic technologies, including CRISPRCas9 gene editing, marker-assisted selection (MAS), and next-generation sequencing (NGS), have revolutionized our understanding of host-pathogen interactions and accelerated the development of resistant cultivars. RNA interference (RNAi) technology has emerged as a promising tool for targeted pest control, while transcriptomics and proteomics approaches have helped identify key resistance genes and defense-related proteins. Integration of these molecular tools with traditional breeding programs has resulted in improved varieties with enhanced resistance to major pests like pod borers and diseases such as fusarium wilt and ascochyta blight. Additionally, biotechnological applications including biopesticides and disease-forecasting systems have strengthened integrated pest management strategies. At slaughterhouses, hides and skins are generally collected and dispatched to tanneries on the same day. If a tannery is not in close proximity, hides are preserved through salting or curing prior to being transported in batches.
A skin (the outer covering) from a fully grown large animal is termed a hide; it is comparatively large, thick, and heavy, typically exceeding 30 lb (13.62 kg) for cattle or buffalo. Conversely, the outer covering of smaller animals such as sheep, goats, pigs, and young calves is known as skin. This type is smaller, thinner, and lighter. The term “slunk” refers to the skin of an unborn calf, which is often utilized for parchment, light suede, or drum skins. Calf skin is derived from young calves that have not yet reached maturity, and it is generally softer and more delicate than the hides of older animals. Its fine texture renders it highly sought after for premium leather goods. In contrast, kip skin is obtained from older but still immature calves. It is thicker and more robust than calf skin while being more refined than adult hides. Kip skin is recognized for its blend of durability and softness, making it ideal for longlasting leather products.
Hides and skins constitute approximately 4-11% of an animal’s live weight, influenced by factors such as species, age, breed, and health. In cattle, the average hide yield is about 7% of live weight, whereas in sheep and goats, the average skin yield is around 11% of live weight. Hides and skins rank among the most valuable by-products of animals and are transformed into leather through the tanning process. The trimmings are repurposed for the production of glue, artifacts, or as feed supplements.

Animal organs and glands play a crucial role in both nutrition and medicine. These organs encompass the brain, heart, liver, lungs, spleen, tongue, pancreas, udder, stomach, uterus, testes, thymus, kidneys, parathyroid, adrenal glands, and ovaries. Some of these are consumed as food, while others find application in medical practices. Glands, constituting approximately 0.28% of an animal’s total weight, are regarded as valuable by-products of meat production and are increasingly utilized in contemporary medicine for the extraction of beneficial substances. The secretions from both endocrine and exocrine glands are essential for the growth and functioning of the body, with hormones derived from these glands being employed to address deficiencies and serve as therapeutic agents.

Different nations exhibit distinct preferences for sausages, and these preferences frequently determine the varieties of casings utilized.
In addition to intestines, casings can also be sourced from weasands (oesophagus), urinary bladders, stomachs, and rectums. With rapidly increasing globalization, an associated risk of movement of trans-boundary diseases is emerging. Trans-boundary animal diseases represent a serious threat. They reduce production and productivity, disrupt local and national economies and also threaten human health (zoonotic). Trans-boundary animal disease is a concern globally; cumulative effort is needed at international level to minimize the spread of infectious diseases across the borders.
Considering that livestock rearing constitutes a significant share in the national economy of a developing country, it is imperative to take up disease control initiatives. Measures are required to safeguard the livestock industry from epidemics of infectious diseases and to uphold safe international trade of  livestock and their products. In this regard, it is essential to develop scientific and risk-based standards that facilitate the international trade in animal commodities.

Trans- boundary Animal Diseases (TADs) are highly contagious diseases of livestock in the world. Moreover, their economic importance is a major constraint in international trade. Their implication on human Health and National food security cannot be over emphasized. Zoonotic diseases among TAD’s include diseases like West Nile Virus (WNV), Rift Valley Fever (RVF), Mad Cow disease (BSE), Bovine Tuberculosis and Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). Other important TADs are Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP), Lumpy Skin Disease, African
Swine Fever (ASF) and Newcastle Disease (ND). They have the potential for very rapid spread, irrespective of national borders and these diseases can cause serious socio-economic and possibly public health consequences.

Bones, horns, and hooves represent essential by-products of the slaughterhouse sector. Frequently obtained from deceased or fallen animals, these by-products possess considerable applications both independently and in the production of secondary goods. Their use fosters the development of secondary rural industries, consequently creating employment opportunities for individuals in rural regions. Furthermore, by fully utilizing these by-products, producers can secure higher prices for their livestock, while processors may experience
enhanced profitability. Effective management of these by-products could also play a role in reducing the costs associated with meat and meat products.
Composition of Bone
Bone constitutes roughly 15% of the weight of a dressed carcass, although this figure may fluctuate due to variables such as breed, age, fat content, and overall health. Generally, the percentage of bone in a dressed carcass is assessed as the weight of the bones in relation to the total weight of the carcass post-dressing.

Outbreaks of LPAI are common around the world but LPAI typically causes no clinical signs or only minor illness in infected birds. LPAI strains are generally less of a threat to human health; in addition, LPAI can have significant economic repercussions as a result of export restrictions and culling of birds, particularly in developing countries where the use of vaccines and other veterinary medicines is difficult
due to weak veterinarian services and small farming units. Compared with LPAI, HPAI is more readily detected in poultry due to very high levels of mortality in infected birds, and can cause potentially catastrophic economic consequences, from significantly reduced livestock populations to lost export markets. Though relatively rare, sporadic human infections of HPAI have occurred in cases of close contact with infected birds and caused serious illness
and even death.

Despite diligent efforts, a portion of blood is inevitably lost during the slaughtering process due to spillage and various other factors. 5. Storage and processing: After collection, blood must be processed promptly to prevent coagulation. Efficient cooling and storage practices are essential for preserving its quality and maximizing its potential for subsequent processing into products such as blood meal or plasma.

Blood may be collected directly into metal or plastic drums when animals are suspended for bleeding. In cases where the animals are slaughtered on the ground, small enamel or plastic bowls can be placed under the bleeding site to collect the blood, which can subsequently be transferred into a drum. The anticipated yield of blood from average tropical livestock is generally as follows:

Chlamydiae are obligate intracellular bacteria with an unusual developmental cycle during which unique infectious forms are produced. They replicate within cytoplasmic vacuoles in host cells. On account of their apparent inability to generate ATP, with resultant dependence on host cell metabolism, they have been termed ‘energy parasites’.
The family Chlamydiaceae belongs to the order Chlamydiales. Currently two genera, Chlamydia and Chlamydophila, and nine species are described. Formerly a single genus and four species, Chlamydia trachomatis, C. psittaci, C. pneumoniae and C. pecorum, were recognised. This classification was based on phenotypic characteristics such as host preference, inclusion morphology, iodine staining for the presence of glycogen, and sulphonamide susceptibility. However, recent nucleic acid sequencing studies of the 16s and 23s rRNA genes confirm two distinct lineages.
In the developmental cycle of chlamydiae, infectious and reproductive forms are morphologically distinct. Infectious extracellular forms, called elementary bodies (EBs) are small (200 to 300 nm), metabolically inert and osmotically stable. Each EB is surrounded by a conventional bacterial cytoplasmic membrane, a periplasmic space and an outer envelope containing lipopolysaccharide.
The periplasmic space does not contain a detectable peptidoglycan layer and the EB relies on disulphide cross-linked envelope proteins for osmotic stability. Elementary bodies enter host cells by receptor-mediated endocytosis. Acidification of the endosome and fusion with lysosomes are prevented by mechanisms which are not fully understood. A process of structural reorganization within the pathogen, of several hours duration, results in the conversion of an EB into a reticulate body (RB). The RB, about 1 μm in diameter, is metabolically active, osmotically fragile and replicates by binary fission within the endosome. The endosome and its contents, when stained, is called an inclusion. When a number of inclusions containing RBs of C.trachomatis are formed in an infected cell, fusion of these structures may
occur.

Organisms in the order Rickettsiales form a diverse group of small (0.3 to 0.5 x 0.8 to 2.0 pm), non-motile, pleomorphic Gram-negative bacteria which replicate only in host cells. They can be cultured in the yolk sac of embryonated eggs or in selected tissue culture cell lines. Because they stain poorly with aniline dyes, these organisms should be stained by Romanowsky methods such as Giemsa or Leishman. In addition to host-cell dependence and poor affinity for basic dyes, a requirement for an invertebrate vector distinguishes them from conventional bacteria and the Chlamydiales.
Epidemiology
Animal hosts and arthropod vectors are the reservoirs for most rickettsiae. A number of rickettsia1 organisms, including Ehrlichia canis, Anaplasma marginale and Haemobartonella felis produce latent infections. In arthropods, rickettsiae replicate in the epithelial cells of the gut before spreading to other organs, including the salivary glands and ovaries where further replication may occur.
Organisms are transmitted when the arthropod feeds on the animal host. Some organisms such as Rickettsia rickettsii are maintained in a tick population by transovarial transmission. Trans-stadial but not transovarial transmission of E. canis and E. phagocytophila occurs in ticks. With the exception of Coxiella burnetii, which produces endospore-like forms and can remain viable in dust for up to 50 days, most rickettsiae are labile outside host cells. Aerosol transmission of C.burnetii commonly occurs in domestic animals and humans. In addition, a silent cycle involving ticks and small wild mammals may constitute a possible source of infection for some domestic species.
Pathogenesis and Pathogenicity
Many Rickettsia species including the causal agents of typhus (R. prowuzekii), murine typhus (R. typhi) and scrub typhus (R. tsutsugamushi) are primarily human pathogens. Rocky Mountain spotted fever, caused by Rickettsia rickettsii, which is a common rickettsia1 disease of humans, also affects dogs.

Rendering is the process of transforming deceased animals or condemned meat into valuable products, such as carcass meal. Traditionally, rendering specifically referred to the extraction of fat from animal materials through heating. However, the term has evolved to encompass the production of carcass meal, meat meal, and technical fat. While the traditional method of rendering involved boiling animal remnants to extract fat, contemporary rendering includes the heating or steaming of carcasses to produce a nearly sterilized material that retains nutrients. The animal by-products utilized in rendering consist of excess fat, hooves, and offal. In the past, tallow was employed in the manufacture of soap and candles, while other by-products like heads and hooves were repurposed for fertilizers. Meat packers quickly recognized the potential for profit in processing these by-products. Today, the rendering industry generates a variety of valuable products, including both edible and inedible oils, chemicals, meat meals, and bone meals, derived from materials such as viscera, bones, trimmings, dead stock, and feathers. A substantial portion of these by-products is recycled into useful products. In developed nations, as well as in India, integrated abattoirs and meat processing facilities manage such waste utilizing advanced equipment and sophisticated processes. Pre-rendering operations: It is essential to process raw materials from the slaughter floor swiftly and comprehensively to guarantee the highest quality of the final product. Prior to placing these materials into the cooker, they require adequate preparation. Heads, feet, condemned carcasses, and bones from the boning department are initially reduced or crushed into smaller fragments using shredders. Additionally, bones can be further reduced in size with machines referred to as “pre-breakers.” Intestines and other soft tissues, which may be
contaminated with feed or manure, must be opened, cleaned, and reduced in size before being incorporated into the cookers during the inedible rendering process.

Bacteria from the genus Anaplasma belong to the Procaryota kingdom, the family Anaplasmataceae. Anaplasma belong to obligate intracellular microorganisms, Gram-negative bacteria, living in the blood cells of mammals. Vertebrates can be their reservoir, i.e. an environment where the pathogen can live and proliferate for many years. However, in many cases bacteria from the genus Anaplasma cause diseases in domestic animals and people.
Taxonomical Position of Bacteria from the Genus Anaplasma
The genera Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, Neorickettsia and Wolbachia include obligate intracellular bacteria, parasitizing in the vacuoles of cells in eukarytic hosts. Animal pathogens were attributed to the genus Anaplasma, such as A. centrale, A. marginale, A. platys, A. ovis and A. bovis, and also the aetiological factor of human anaplasmosis, A. phagocytophilum.
Anaplasma marginale
A. marginale are obligate intracellular bacteria parasitizing in erythrocytes of higher vertebrates, mostly ruminants.
Anaplasma Centrale
A. centrale is a parasite in the erythrocytes of ruminants, mainly cattle. As opposed to A. marginale, it creates concentrations in the central part of the cell. A. centrale is less pathogenic to cattle than A. marginale but, most importantly, occasionally gives resistance against the latter. Hence it is used for the preparation of live vaccine strains, assuring immunological protection against bovine anaplasmosis.
Anaplasma Bovis
A. bovis is a bacterium detected mainly in cattle, but also observed in small mammals which are probably a reservoir of this bacterium. It occurs in monocytes, and the disease it causes is called monocytic anaplasmosis. The symptoms of the disease are most visible in calves, but also in adult animals; symptoms include weakening of the body, marked reduction in weight, elevated temperature, enlargement of prescapular lymph nodes, paling of the mucous membranes, and in many cases an elevated amount of secreted mucus.

Given our substantial livestock population, it is essential to efficiently process animal by-products to enhance economic gains and generate employment opportunities for individuals with limited educational backgrounds. To effectively manage the high density of livestock, it is advisable to establish animal by-product processing facilities at intervals of every 50 kilometers. Additionally, situating these facilities in proximity to abattoirs can contribute to the reduction of pollution. Furthermore, the waste generated from both abattoirs and processing plants can be utilized to produce biogas, offering mutual benefits.
Incorporating by-product utilization facilities is a critical component of modern abattoirs. This approach not only boosts profits for producers but also mitigates environmental pollution resulting from improper waste management. In nations such as India, where there is a scarcity of modern abattoirs and many operate using outdated practices, it becomes particularly vital to establish facilities dedicated to the management of deceased animals and slaughterhouse waste. Some developing countries have even resorted to employing mobile units to effectively manage dead and fallen animals.
While it is frequently asserted that every part of an animal, with the exception of its last cry, holds value when utilized appropriately, the actual utility of byproducts is contingent upon various factors, including the size of the abattoir (the number of animals processed daily), the availability of raw materials, the current applications of by-products, and their significance.
A standard by-product utilization facility encompasses various components such as rendering plants, hide/skin storage, and casing processing units. These facilities gather raw by-products and transport them to different processing centers located away from the slaughterhouse. For example, glands may be directed to the pharmaceutical sector, skins to tanning operations, fat to soap production, and bones to gelatine extraction. When designing such a facility, it is crucial to consider the availability and quantity of raw materials to ensure efficient functioning and comprehensive utilization of by-products.

Heat labile and loses its viability within 12–38 hours at room temperature. Infective stabilities can be cryopreserved in DMSO (dimethyl sulphide) or better yet in sucrosepotassium phosphate-glutamate medium (SPG). Infective half-life of thawed stabilate kept on ice is only 20–30 minutes.

India has a substantial livestock population, with animal husbandry acting as a supplementary occupation for about 67% of the rural population. Unlike the commercially oriented farming systems found in Western countries, livestock rearing in India is intricately linked to rural life, where most farmers maintain a small number of animals.
Currently, India’s livestock population surpasses 535 million, which includes 192.49 million cattle, 109.85 million buffaloes, 74.26 million sheep, 148.88 million goats, 9.06 million pigs, and over 850 million poultry birds. Each year, approximately 100 million animals are slaughtered in nearly 4,000 slaughterhouses, resulting in a significant amount of by-products or offals. In tropical regions, a considerable portion of these by-products deteriorates before they can be utilized, primarily due to a lack of knowledge, skills, and infrastructure.
Enhancing profitability in the livestock sector could be realized through improved utilization of animal by-products and waste. Many slaughterhouses presently do not have sufficient facilities to collect and preserve these byproducts in a timely manner. Additionally, retrieving fallen animal carcasses from remote rural areas often presents challenges. The competitiveness of the meat industry can be bolstered by more effective use of by-products. It is estimated that by-products such as skin, pluck, head, feet, and gut can recover approximately 30% and 35% of the live animal value for goats and sheep, respectively. Thus, it is crucial to add value to significant by-products.

Introduction
Q fever is a zoonotic bacterial infection caused by Coxiella burnetii, an obligate intracellular parasite, classified within the family Rickettsiaccae. Q fever (Q for “query”) was first used in 1937 to describe a mysterious febrile illness of packing house workers in Brisbane, Australia. The causative agent was isolated from infected workers and later was identified as Rickettsiae. Almost simultaneously the same organism was identified wood tick collected in Montana. Cox, an American, and Burnet, an Australian, where honored for their early work with this organism, hence the name “Coxiella burnetii”.
Host and Susceptibility
Coxiella burnetii is a well-established infectious agent that has reached a state of balanced pathogenicity in a plethora of host. Human are unnatural and usually dead-end-host. The microorganism generally maintained in a less pathogenic form in separate cycle existing independently among wild mammals and their haematophagus arthropods, principally tick and in domestic animals.
Morphology
It is an intracellular organism which is a polymorphic bacillus (0.2-0.4mm width, 0.4-1.0 mm length), which has a cell membrane, like Gram negative bacteria. However, it stains poorly with pigmented Gram stain, but gimenez staining is traditionally used to stain the Coxiella burnetii pathogen from pathological materials and crop. Coxiella burnetii has several distinctive characteristics, including a sporulationlike
process that protects the organism against the external environment, where it can survive for long periods. In mammals, the usual host cell of C. burnetii is the macrophage, which is unable to kill the bacterium. The other an important characteristic of C. burnetii is its antigenic variations, those called phase variation. This antigenic shift can be measured and is valuable for differentiating acute from chronic Q fever. Thus, it displays two antigenic phases those are phase-I and phase- II that are liable to the Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of the membrane.

The mycoplasmas are microorganisms in the class Mollicutes. Of the nine genera in this class, five contain species of veterinary interest. The genus Mycoplasma, in which there are about 100 species, contains most of the animal pathogens. The first mycoplasma identified in 1890 was Mycoplasma mycoides subspecies mycoides, the cause of contagious bovine pleuropneumonia. Similar types of mycoplasmas which were subsequently identified were called pleuropneumonia- like organisms (PPLO).
Mycoplasmas, the smallest prokaryotic cells capable of self-replication, are pleomorphic organisms ranging from spherical (0.3 to 0.9 pm in diameter) to filamentous (up to 1.0 μm long). Because they cannot synthesize peptidoglycan or its precursors, they do not possess rigid cell walls but have flexible, triplelayged outer membranes.
Their flexibility allows them to pass through bacterial membrane filters of pore size 0.22 to 0.45 μm. Mycoplasmas are susceptible to desiccation, heat, detergents and disinfectants. However, they are resistant to antibiotics such as penicillin which interfere with the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. Based on 5s rRNA sequence analyses, the mycoplasmas have been shown to be linked phylogenetically to Gram-positive bacteria such as Clostridium species which have low guanine-cytosine content in their DNA. They require enriched media for growth, characteristically forming umbonate micro-colonies
when illuminated obliquely and microcolonies with a ‘fried egg’ dppearance in transmitted light. The dense central zone is due to extension of the microcolony into the agar. Mycoplasmas, which have relatively small genomes (approximately 800 genes) are fastidious in their growth requirements.
Most mycoplasmas are facultative anaerobes and some grow optimally in an atmosphere of 5 to 10% CO2. Nonpathogenic anaerobic mycoplasmas are found in the rumens of sheep and cattle. The genera Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma contain animal pathogens.
