1. Bibliometric

Bibliometrics is the application of quantitative techniques to analyze the volume, the movement, the frequency and the characteristics, etc of published documents and the related activities. Alan Pritchard was first to use the word “Bibliometrics” in an article “Statistical Bibliography or Bibliometrics” published in the 1969 issue of the “Journal of Documentation”. He defines Bibliometrics as “the application of mathematical and statistical methods to books and other media of communication.” In a later article, Pritchard explained Bibliometrics as the “metrology of the information transfer process and its purpose is analysis and control of the process”. Bibliometrics is a set of methods used to study or measure texts and information (Wikipedia, 2011).

The history of plant breeding is divided into 4 periods- knowledge of plant breeding before 1900, application of genetic principles (1900-1940), plant breeding research after 1940 and the recent developments in plant breeding. Emphasis is given on the land marks in genetic improvement of vegetable crops.

The major land marks  in genetics and breeding of crop plants are listed below.

Evolution of the Internet

The Internet, as we know it today had a very humble beginning. J C R Licklider of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology envisioned the Internet as far back as 1962 in a series of memos written by him that talked about social interactions that could be enabled through networking, a concept that he termed his “Galactic Network”. He joined DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) in October 1962 and was its first research head. There, in collaboration with Lawrence G Roberts and other scientists in 1965, the ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) was conceived. With other developments, ARPANET was transformed into the Internet as we know it today. The technology involved in this was a very basic packet switching network that later moved to include packet satellite networks, ground-based packet radio networks and other networks. In packet switching mode, the hub router, which acts as the intermediary, decides the best path for sending or receiving data packets, unlike circuit switching mode (used in telephony) in which there is a dedicated path by which the data travels from the source to the destination.

The future of networking was based on this skeleton. Further down the line, the TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) was developed, which had the ability to address networks and machines further downstream. Other technologies like telnet, e-mail, internet telephony etc, were also developed subsequently. By 1990, the ARPANET was decommissioned and TCP/IP had displaced most other Wide Area Networking (WAN) protocols and was fast becoming the accepted protocol for internetworking. After a while, the World Wide Web (WWW) came into existence. A consortium called the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) was formed in 1992 and it had taken on the responsibility for evolving the various protocols and standards associated with the web. Soon after this, commercialization of the internet started taking place. There was a marked increase in the number of communities across the internet. Bulletin Board Services and Usenet groups were now home to more computer users than ever before. With the advent of such information, corporations and businesses also started looking at the internet in terms of business viability. In 1994, Pizza Hut started offering pizza ordering on its Web page while First Virtual, the first ‘cyberbank’, launched its online presence. By this time, there were more than 38,64,000 hosts on the Internet. Since then, the Net has grown rapidly and the process continues to this day.

Though the Internet hit India in the late 1980s, it was deemed fit only for researchers and scientists. Commercial internet access was first introduced by VSNL in August 1995. Today internet in India has ballooned and India has become a giant in the IT Enabled Services (ITES) field. With falling internet access costs and increasing users, India’s ranking in terms of internet users is rising fast.

The Internet is growing at an amazing rate. The main reason for this is that the Internet has now become an accepted part of the mainstream urban life. It is used for almost everything imaginable, from recreation and entertainment to learning about rocket science. However, not everything about is good. There is an information overload and not all the data that is available is true and should not be accepted at face value. The internet is not limited to the PC anymore and has percolated down to various devices thanks to advancement in technologies like GPRS, EDGE, CDMA, WiFi etc. through which it can be accessed with a mobile device.

The sensors present over remote sensing satellites are designed to collect energy or radiance from the varied surface features having wide range of radiance i.e. from features like water bodies having very low radiance to features like sand or snow having very high radiance. But, most of the time, the study area may not have all these features; therefore, radiance values may remain confined to a narrow range. This reduces the contrast of the image, thereby decreases its visual quality. In this context, image contrast enhancement techniques are used for effective visualization and display of remote sensing image on computer screens or hard copy so that maximum amount of information can be derived through its visual interpretation.

Contrast enhancement of a digital image is a technique to modify the original grey levels of input image to the entire available range of the grey levels. This increases the contrast between various features in the image which improves the visual quality of original image. Contrast enhancement can be done by both linear and non-linear methods. Some of the commonly used contrast enhancement techniques with their implementation in R software are discussed in this chapter.

We need following packages for performing this exercise in R. raster package is required for importing of raster image and for performing contrast enhancement. RStoolbox package is also required for contrast enhancement as well as for visualization of raster data with ggplot2 package. rasterVis package is mainly used in this exercise for plotting histogram of the raster data.

The domestic duck is an economically important domestic bird in rural areas. They are productive and are reared around the globe for their egg, meat, feather and fattened livers. The worldwide population of ducks (Anas spp.) is 1.15 billion in 2020 out of which 89 per cent were in Asia. China, Viet Nam, Bangladesh and Indonesia are the largest duck rearing countries in Asia (FAO 2020). Geographical location, subtropical climatic condition, water lodged and low areas of the country are suitable for duck habitat. The advantages of ducks over other poultry species are that they are hardy, have higher disease tolerance and are easy to herd.

14.1 Introduction

The integument is an envelope to separate and protect a fish from its environment; it also provides the means through which most contacts with the outer world are made (Fig. 14.1, 14.2 and 14.3). It is a large organ and is continuous with the linings of all body openings, and also covers the fins. The fish integument is dotted with various kinds of unicellular and multicellular glands along with abundant mucus-secreting glands. Poison glands of many cartilaginous fishes and some bony fishes are frequently associated with spines on the fins, tails, and gill covers. Photophores, light-emitting organs found especially in deep-sea forms, maybe modified mucous glands.

This chapter introduces the processing of shell eggs into industrial egg products. It classifies products according to egg fraction and physical state, including whole egg, albumen, yolk, liquid, frozen and dried products. Breaking and separation operations, liquid egg production, pasteurization, freezing, dehydration, spray drying and desugarization are discussed. The chapter also covers quality control, packaging and storage of processed egg products. Particular attention is given to balancing microbiological safety with functional properties during pasteurization and processing.

Introduction

According to FAO estimates, about 50% total geographical area in India is under various degraded hazards and about 2.1 million ha of land is getting degraded and deforested annually (Sehgal et al., 1998). Out of that underground water in arid and semi-arid areas is saline or sodic in nature. While spices, medicinal and aromatic plants may be a boon for these areas, which not only withstand under adverse conditions but also could be productive and helps in mitigating these problems. However, other crops are remain less or unproductive in these areas.

Fermentation was known to mankind from time immemorial. But, development of biochemical principles of  fermentation  was originated by  Lavoisier in France in 1789 by way of analysing chemical composition of  sugar and its fermentation products such as ethanol, carbon dioxide and  acetic acid. Many products are produced by fermentation process. In fermentation, controlled action of selected microorganisms is used to alter  texture of foods, preserve foods by production of acids or alcohol or to produce fine flavours and aromas which increase value of raw materials.

Given our substantial livestock population, it is essential to efficiently process animal by-products to enhance economic gains and generate employment opportunities for individuals with limited educational backgrounds. To effectively manage the high density of livestock, it is advisable to establish animal by-product processing facilities at intervals of every 50 kilometers. Additionally, situating these facilities in proximity to abattoirs can contribute to the reduction of pollution. Furthermore, the waste generated from both abattoirs and processing plants can be utilized to produce biogas, offering mutual benefits.
Incorporating by-product utilization facilities is a critical component of modern abattoirs. This approach not only boosts profits for producers but also mitigates environmental pollution resulting from improper waste management. In nations such as India, where there is a scarcity of modern abattoirs and many operate using outdated practices, it becomes particularly vital to establish facilities dedicated to the management of deceased animals and slaughterhouse waste. Some developing countries have even resorted to employing mobile units to effectively manage dead and fallen animals.
While it is frequently asserted that every part of an animal, with the exception of its last cry, holds value when utilized appropriately, the actual utility of byproducts is contingent upon various factors, including the size of the abattoir (the number of animals processed daily), the availability of raw materials, the current applications of by-products, and their significance.
A standard by-product utilization facility encompasses various components such as rendering plants, hide/skin storage, and casing processing units. These facilities gather raw by-products and transport them to different processing centers located away from the slaughterhouse. For example, glands may be directed to the pharmaceutical sector, skins to tanning operations, fat to soap production, and bones to gelatine extraction. When designing such a facility, it is crucial to consider the availability and quantity of raw materials to ensure efficient functioning and comprehensive utilization of by-products.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a mounting global health emergency that threatens the effectiveness of modern medicine and veterinary care. In India, the challenge is compounded by high antibiotic consumption, unregulated access to antimicrobials, and widespread use in agriculture and animal husbandry. The World Health Organization has identified the Eskape pathogens— Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiellapneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter spp, as priority organisms due to their ability to “escape” the effects of antibiotics and cause life-threatening infections. Simultaneously, zoonotic transmission of resistant bacteria from animals to humans is emerging as a critical concern, particularly in regions with close human-animal interfaces like Jammu & Kashmir. The importance of Eskape pathogens to the establishment and promotion of antimicrobial resistance in hospitalized patients was first recognized in a 2008 by Rice. The morbidity and mortality associated with Gram-negative Eskape pathogens is particularly concerning, as new antimicrobial agentsthose with activity against multidrug-resistant and pan-resistant Gram-negative strainshave not emerged as quickly as needed. Consequently, nosocomial infections continue to pose a serious threat to patient health, especially among critically ill inpatients and those undergoing invasive procedures or requiring the placement of medical devices. Eskape pathogens are well known for their intricate resistance mechanisms, often leaving clinicians with limited therapeutic options. Due to their significant role in driving antimicrobial resistance within hospital settings, consistent and systematic monitoring of their resistance profiles is crucial for guiding effective infection control and therapeutic strategies.This also serves as a critical indicator of regional resistance trends among hospitalized populations. In animal sector, the wastewater of livestock slaughterhouses, animal products (raw or processed) have been considered a source of multidrugresistant bacteria with clinical implications as well as their dissemination into the environment and entry into human food chain.Bacteria from the livestock can act as opportunistic pathogens and carry resistance genes that are important for both veterinary and human health. Since many antibiotics are used in both human and animal health fields, the resistant bacteria enter the environmentespecially through wastewater treatment plants affected by slaughterhouse wasteposing risks to public health. Among the various sources, the water used during poultry slaughtering often contains multidrug-resistant bacteria and can expose slaughterhouse workers to infection. To reduce these risks, it’s important to develop strategies that limit bacterial release into the water systems and prevent their spread to people and the environment. The development of AMR has been attributed to several factors comprising of microbial mutations rendering the antibiotics ineffective, human interference such as over use and over-prescription of antimicrobials, agricultural and commercial application of antimicrobials in the animal sector, and human behavioural factors (Vijayalaxmi et al., 2021). An expected annual rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) by 5–10 % annually has been predicted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Annual Report 2021 due to wide spread abusive use of broad-spectrum antibiotics (ICMR Annual Report 2021). Twelve families of priority drug-resistant bacteria (critical, high and medium) posing great threat to human health in terms of resistance to selected antimicrobials have been identified in priority pathogen list (PPL) of Global Action Plan, World Health Organisation (WHO) to stimulate the research towards the development of new antimicrobials against a particular drug-resistance (WHO,2017). From the Indian perspective, AMR is a grave concern as the Indian population is the highest consumer of antibiotics in the world (10.7 units per person). The eyeball is a complex structure having tunics i.e. fibrous tunic (sclera, cornea), vascular tunic (iris, ciliary body, choroid)and nervous tunic (retin a)and its adnexa i.e. eyelids, lacrimal apparatus, extraocular muscles, conjunctiva and other soft tissue are very important structure for proper functioning of eye. The embryonic tissue which contributes for development of eye and its adnexa are:
1. Surface ectoderm of the head: Lens, corneal epithelium, eyelids, Lacrimal gland and conjunctival epithelium
2. Neural ectoderm of the forebrain: Retina, Posterior epithelium of iris and ciliary body, optic nerve
3. Mesoderm: Cornea stroma, Descemet’s membrane, Choroid, Sclera, extra-ocular muscles
Development of eye begins simultaneously with the development of brain by the process of neurulation. Neural tube is lined by neuroectoderm and the exterior of embryo lined by surface ectoderm. Neural crest cells, population of specialized mesenchymal cells develop from the lateral border of the neural fold and do not participate in the formation of neural tube. These neural crest cells migrate under the surface ectoderm peripherally and populating the region around the optic vesicle and form the future all connective tissue of structure of eye.

The optic sulci are visible as paired evaginations of the forebrain neural ectoderm on day 13 of gestation in the dog. The outpouching on either side of optic field of diencephalon (caudal part of prosencephalon) called optic vesicle which attached to the diencephalon by optic stalk. In dog, it appears at the gestation age of day 15. Each optic vesicle grows laterally until it comes into contact with the surface ectoderm. The surface ectoderm become thickened to form the lens placode near the optic vesicle. This lens placode invaginates into the optic vesicles and form lens vesicle, which later on loses it contact with the surface ectoderm. A hen can produce eggs without mating by a cock. Such an egg is edible but infertile and will not hatch. If the hen is naturally or artificially inseminated with poultry semen, the spermatozoon unites with the ovum to form a fertile egg that will hatch after incubation. Unlike mammals, the embryo of birds grows independently within an enclosed hard structure called shell and thus, all nutrients required for embryonic development are contained in the egg. The yolk, albumen, shell membrane and shell protect the developing embryo apart from providing well balanced nutrients.

4.1. Issues in Employment
4.1.1. What is employment?

Employment is a relationship between two parties, usually based on a contract, one being the employer and the other being the employee.

(a) Employee

An employee contributes labor and expertise to an endeavor of an employer and is usually hired to perform specific duties which are packaged into a job. In most modern economies, the term “employee” refers to a specific defined relationship between an individual and a corporation, which differs from those of customer or client. Other types of employment are arrangements such as indenturing which is now highly unusual in developed nations but still happens elsewhere.

 India, situated between the latitude of 08004’ and 37006’ N and longitudes of

68007’ to 97025’ E, has a geographical area of 329 Mha. Physiographically, it

can be divided into three broad regions, viz., Peninsula (a triangular Plateau in

the Deccan and South of the Vindhyas), Mountain region of the Himalalayas

(Extra-Penninsula), and the Indo-Gangetic Plain separating these two regions.

Geologically, a great part of the Penninsula is occupied by the gneiss, schists

and other rocks of diverse nature. Red soils (Alfisols) generally predominate in

this region. The western and central parts predominate in basaltic rock having

Black cotton soils of different thickness (Vertisols, Inceptisols). The mountain

region shows the development of marine sediments of all ages, especially, in

north of the Himalayas. The vast Indo-Gangetic and other plains of Pleistocene

origin are composed of alluvium of the great river systems flowing in this

region. The alluvial soils of this region depend on the age of alluvia and degree

of development.

Climatically, India shows three distinct seasons:

 i) Cool and mainly dry winters from November to February

ii) Hot and mainly dry summers from March to June

iii) Monsoon rainy season from mid-June to September.

Poultry production in India has emerged as a rapid growing sector among agricultural and livestock sector. Indian poultry industry has made a significant impact in economic, nutritional and socio-cultural aspects including livelihoods of poor rural households. Ever since its inception and is presently emerging as sun rise sector with a growth rate of 10-15% and overall turnover of Rs 70,000/- crore. Despite of frequent ingress with various pathogenic avian diseases including avian influenza, which is a severe setback for the industry, India has sustained globally as 3rd and 5th biggest country for egg and meat production respectively. Emerging and re-emerging poultry diseases in the country are posing significant challenges to the poultry industry.

Biostatistics is a mathematical science which analyses numerical facts or biometric data of biological events following certain rules like design of experiments, analysis of data, presentation of data with tables, figures hypothesis testing, making a probability prediction and conclusion etc.

or it is an art of analysis and presentation of data following certain rules and international norms accepted by international journals for pharmacology experiments, animal farm data, human and animal medicines data, epidemiology data, non-parametric data etc.

What is statistics?

The number of introductory or elementary texts on the subject of statistics indicates how important the subject has become for everyone in the biological sciences. However, the fact that there are many texts might also suggest that we have yet to discover a fool proof method of presenting what is required. The problem confronted in biological statistics is as follows:

When there is a need to make a set of numerical observations in biology, it has been observed that the values are scattered. Then questions arise to know whether these values differ because of factors e.g. treatments or these are part of a ‘background’ i.e., natural variation. You need to evaluate what the numbers actually mean, and to represent them in a way that readily communicates their meaning to others.

In modern poultry farming, successful management relies on accurate and complete daily record keeping. Some of the traits may influence the profit of farm, thereby affecting the economics of the farm than the other traits, and hence they are called economic traits. Economic traits can be defined as those traits which are economically important and improvement in these traits would increase the profit of the farm. These traits are generally assumed to be controlled by the genes at larger number of loci. Some of the economic traits in egg and meat type chickens are as follows:
