Epigenetics is the study of reversible heritable changes in gene function that occur without a change in the sequence of nuclear DNA and Gene-regulatory information that is not expressed in DNA sequences is transmitted from one generation (of cells or organisms) to the next. Epigenetics has become an integral part of the study of evolution and development during the past 50 years. It was originally defined by Conrad Hal Waddington in 1942 (Waddington, 1942), but it is currently referred to any mechanism that affects genes without changing the nucleotide sequence. These mechanisms are involved in deploying the genetic program for the many processes operating during the lifespan of a cell: development, differentiation, stress response, and pathological conditions, and by the environment to adapt to those situations (Rakyan and Beck, 2006). Epigenetic mechanisms include covalent chemical modification of DNA (methylation) and chromatin (covalent histone modifications), non-coding RNAs, and polycomb group (PcG) genes, and are ultimately related to the regulation of gene expression and chromatin structure.

Ever since the dawn of civilization, dependence on plants has been indispensable for human survival. Transformation from food gathering to settled agriculture necessitated domestication of plant species useful for mankind leading to co-evolution of plants and man in absolute harmony with nature. Natural disasters like famines, floods, epidemics have often led people to search new plant species for human consumption. Out of an estimated total of 80,000 plants of possible economic use, about 30,000 plants have been found to be edible in nature and approximately 7,000 plants have been cultivated by mankind at one time or the other, of which only 158 plants are widely used for food (Wilson, 1992). Among these, 30 crops provide 90% of the world’s food and only 10 crops supply 75% of the world’s food budget. Out of the above only three crops, rice, wheat and maize provide 60% of the world’s total food requirement (Paroda, 2000). This dangerously narrow level of food base may imperil the existence of mankind during a time of impending crisis in unforeseen times in the future.

Among abiotic stresses, low and high temperature stress is very critical for determining the agricultural production. Plants exhibit a maximum rate of growth and development at an optimum temperature or over a diurnal range of temperatures (Fitter and Hay, 1981). When ambient temperature deviates from optimal, physiological, biochemical, metabolic and molecular changes occur within plants. This is an effort of plants to maximize growth and developmental processes and to maintain cellular homeostasis during such adverse conditions. Under increasingly stressful conditions, plants experience progressively more abnormal, impaired or dysfunctional cellular and whole-plant processes until the cardinal temperatures for survival are reached (Fitter and Hay, 1981). At the extremes of the natural temperature range of a plant, the degree of physiological, cellular, metabolic and molecular dysfunction becomes so severe that it leads to death.

Growth constraints and stress result in significant crop losses and therefore the mechanisms underlying endurance and adaptation to these changes have long been the focus of intense research (Bray 2004). Kültz (2005) elaborated two types of responses to a particular kind of stress:

Epitheliogenesis imperfecta of tongue

Abnormal smooth surface of tongue due to small filiform papillae. It occurs as a defect in autosomal recessive gene and occurs in Holstein-Friesian cattle. This is also known as smooth tongue.

Cleft palate

This is most common congenital abnormality that occurs due to failure of oral nasal cavity to divide leaving cleft. It may also extend towards lips producing ‘harelip’ condition.

Mega colon

There is distention of colon which abruptly terminates in rectum due to mutant gene in dogs.

Abstract

Bioinformatics is a discipline combining biology, mathematics and the technology including computational tools and databases. It is one of the fast growing fields in the scientific community. This chapter is intended to provide an overview of the important databases of bioinformatics used for research in molecular biology, taxonomy, conservation biology, forensics and medicine and for the commercial applications in pharmaceutical industry and agricultural biotechnology. This chapter also describes various internet resources available in the field of Bioinformatics.

Introduction

Bioinformatics has emerged as one of the important scientific disciplines which revolutionized application of life sciences in our day to day life. A simple definition of bioinformatics is: “Bioinformatics is the use of computational techniques for the consolidation and analysis of large scale experimental biological data”. Hence, Bioinformatics has transformed the life science discipline from a purely wet lab-based science to a computationally assisted information science.

Application of bioinformatics in life science has multi facets right from gene discovery to drug design where the knowledge on sequence, structure and function of genes and proteins take the lead. The objectives of biological database generation are to: (i) organize the large scale experimental biological data for further investigation, (ii) make the biological data available globally and (iii) avoid duplication of experiments.

4.1 Introduction
4.1.1 Overview of Genomics in Biotechnology
The genome of an organism serves as the ‘blueprint of life’ (Baeza, 2024) and functions as an information repository (Goldman & Landweber, 2016), containing the necessary information for the synthesis of molecules, cells, and tissues (Abera et al., 2017). A study of the entire collection of genes within an organism’s genome is known as genomics (NIH, 2022; WHO, 2025). Genomics encompasses aspects of genetics, focusing on the comprehensive characterization of an organism’s entire set of genes rather than on individual genes (Baeza, 2024). The investigation of living organisms has undergone a transformation through the application of genomics and related fields, providing unique insights that enhance various applications aimed at improving human life, economic conditions (Kalaitzandonakes et al., 2023), and environmental sustainability (Mudaliar et al., 2023).
According to a genomic analysis, 80% of the 6,000 rare disorders have genetic causes (Brittain et al., 2017). Cancer, a genetic disease, has revealed through DNA sequencing the mutational events and oncogenic drivers (D. Wang et al., 2023). Genomic tests contribute significantly to the prediction and prevention of diseases, including familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) (Brittain et al., 2017). Agricultural industries are currently confronting multiple challenges, including global changes in climate (Bai et al., 2024), growing populations (Putri et al., 2019), resource depletion (Feng et al., 2023), reduction of cultivable land (Mirzabaev et al., 2023), and the prevalence of pathogens (Hossain & Roslan, 2023). Advances in genomic technologies, such as DNA sequencing and gene editing, have transformed the field. DNA sequencing includes; Nextgeneration sequencing (NGS) (Marudamuthu et al., 2023), Ribonucleic acid sequencing (RNA-seq) (Upton et al., 2023), whereas, gene editing methods includes; Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeat- CRISPR associated protein 9 (CRISPR/ Cas9) (Q. Liu et al., 2021), Transcription activator-like effector nucleases (TALENS) Zinc-finger nucleases (ZNF) (Malzahn et al., 2017) and Oligonucleotide directed mutagenesis (ODM) (Ravikiran et al., 2025) as well as doubled haploids (Chen et al., 2024), molecular markers (Kumar et al., 2024) and mapping populations (Temesgen, 2021), offers potential solutions against such agricultural challenges (Hossain & Roslan, 2023). Genome sequencing techniques are applied to various fields of industrial biotechnology such as; strain development or improvement (Salazar-Cerezo et al., 2023), enzyme discovery (Zaparucha et al., 2018) and analysis of microbial community (Hosokawa et al., 2022). What to Do

    ·    Abscesses should be examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible and within 24 hours.
 
    ·    Fluid may normally drain from the site of an abscess. An abscess does not drain through the tube, but rather around the latex tubing. Therefore, it is important for you to clean the area around the drain twice daily with warm water.

    ·    Apply a hot compress to the affected site at least two times daily for 3 to 5 days after the animal leaves the hospital. Wet a clean washcloth with very warm water and place it directly over the affected site, and then apply gentle pressure ideally for 5 to 10 minutes.

SYNOPSIS

Nature produces plants with healing properties. Hundreds of phytochemicals and antioxidants have been identified in various food plants. Many plants or plant parts are eaten as food. There are several plant species which are cultivated for food, and many have several distinct cultivars. Seeds of plants are a good source of food for animals, including humans, because they contain the nutrients necessary for the plant’s initial growth, including many healthful fats, such as Omega fats. In fact, the majority of foods consumed by human beings are seed-based foods.

Many plants or plant parts are eaten as food. In addition to essential vitamins, minerals, and fibers, plant foods contain phytochemicals and antioxidants, which actively provide protection against diseases. Several studies carried out all over the world have demonstrated the protective values of fruits. Fruits are the ripened ovaries of plants, including the seeds within. Many plants have evolved fruits that are attractive as a food source to animals, so that animals will eat the fruits and excrete the seeds some distance away.

Abnormal seedling: Abnormal seedlings are those seedlings which do not show the capacity for continued development in to normal plants when grown in good quality soil under favourable conditions of water supply, temperature and light.

Abortion: Loss of reproductive structures (e.g. a flower or an ovule) during development or arrest of development of any organ so that it remains imperfect or fails to reach maturity.

Absolute humidity: The amount of water vapour present in a given volume of atmosphere, usually expressed in g water per kg dry air, or g water per cubic meter air.

Pollution: Environmental pollution in general, may be described as the contamination of the environment with harmful wastes arising mainly from human activities. These activities release certain materials which produce pollution in the atmosphere water and soil. In simple words, environmental pollution may be defined as direct or indirect changes as a result of human activities, which adversely influence the biological and non-biological equilibrium of the environment.

Crop yields are affected by a combination of abiotic stresses, biotic stresses, and nutritional factors but abiotic stresses (drought, heat, cold or salinity) are the major factors that prevent crops from realizing their full yield potential (Edmeades, 2009). In traditional approach, breeders grow and cross varieties and then evaluate how the progenies vary in their ability to deal with stresses. The best-adapted plants are then selected for growing in fields exposed to stresses. Biotechnologists have taken advantage of recent advances in biotechnology and functional genomics to genetically engineer crops which can give better yield in adverse conditions than the unmodified ones (Manavalan et al., 2009; Umezawa et al., 2006). Drought, extreme temperatures (high or low), high salinity and cold are the major abiotic stresses that affect plant growth and result in significant yield losses. Although plants have evolved a wide spectrum of programs for adaptation to changing environment, the current understanding of the mechanisms associated with the ability of crops to maintain yield under abiotic stress are poorly understood (Witcombe et al., 2008; Munns et al., 2008; Bartels et al., 2005). New advances in ‘omic’ technologies are providing opportunities for identification of transcriptional, translational and post-translational mechanisms and signaling pathways that regulate the plant response. This chapter describers several examples of how modern crop technologies may be applied to broaden crop tolerance of various abiotic stresses and to increase total biomass.

Growth of horticulture is the cornerstone for augmenting employment opportunities in agriculture sector both directly and indirectly. Of late, there is a marked shift in the cropping pattern towards diversification into high value commercial crops in the country. To make horticulture viable and profitable, the thrust should be on improving the resource use efficiency, so that the relative profitability could be enhanced. Success in horticulture is more technology driven compared to other crops. The time bound removal of quantitative curbs on imports and other barriers to access domestic market under WTO, of which India is a signatory, will require Indian Horticultural produce / products to become competitive both in the domestic and international markets. This would call for use of Hi-tech horticulture technologies. The term Hi-Tech Horticulture was coined in recent years. There are no standard definitions for this. The Department of Agriculture and Co-operation,GOI in 1999 defined Hi-tech Horticulture as “any technology which is modern, less environment dependent, capital intensive and has the capacity to improve the productivity and quality of horticultural crops”.

Live rock is a general term for any type of rock encrusted with, and containing within its orifices, a wide variety of marine organisms including algae and colorful sessile invertebrates. Live rock serves as the principal biological and chemical filter in many marine-type tanks, and the encrusted organisms usually provide much of the background coloration in the tank. Ornamental fish culture is fast emerging as a major branch of aquaculture globally. Aquarium keeping is the second largest hobby in the world next to photography and the ornamental fish and aquatic plant industry is fast gaining importance due to its tremendous economic opportunities and prospects. Ornamental fish keeping is a popular hobby in developed countries and is gaining popularity in many developing countries. The growing interest in aquarium fishes has resulted in steady increase in aquarium fish trade, globally. According to Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) (2006), export earnings from ornamental fish trade is US $ 251 million and more than 60% of the production comes from households of developing countries. The wholesale value of the global ornamental fish trade is estimated to be US $ 14 Billion. More than 2500 species of ornamental fishes are traded and some of 30-35 species of fresh water dominate the market. The trade with an annual growth rate of 8 percent offers a lot of scope for development. India’s share in global ornamental fish trade is negligible and at present the ornamental fish export from India is dominated by the wild caught species. The top exporting country is Singapore, followed by Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Indonesia and India. The largest importer of ornamental fish is USA. Europe and Japan, China and South Africa are the emerging markets of ornamental fish trade. The aesthetic, attractive colour and appearance of the fish appeal to children and aged alike. As the day passed, ornamental fish keeping become an interesting activity for many, in the process, generating income for the unemployed youth and farmers. The concept of entrepreneurship development, through ornamental fish farming is gaining popularity day-by-day.

The landscape gardener is a necessity because very a few people are capable of selecting the right kind of plants for their grounds; they cannot imagine a landscape picture in terms of varieties and groups, the way an expert can. The vividity of the garden depends on its design, features and the most vitally on plants, the key elements which make the garden enliven. Selection of variety of ornamentals is done in order to exhibit different form of growth, flowering time, leaf and stem texture, flower colour etc. Therefore trees, shrubs, climbers, annuals, bulbous plants and ornamental grasses usually find place in the garden along with other secondary groups. Plants play a pivotal role in the protection of our environment as well as improving human life.
