Medicinal plants especially underutilized fruit are the nature’s gift to arid zone. Many of fruits are popular in this area but aonla posses an important place among all. Aonla or Indian gooseberry (Emblica officinalis Gaertn) is native to tropical south-eastern Asia mainly peninsular of central and southern India. The tree is known as Amla, Amlaki, Amli, Ambala, Amalakamu and Nelli in different parts of India. It is a very hardy tree and can be grown under diverse soil and agro-climatic conditions without much care. Aonla fruits has been reported to have potential of antioxidant, free radical scavenging capacity, anti-inflammatory, anti-mutagenic, immune modulation properties, which is used to cure various cancer, diabetes, liver and heart related diseases

Aonla has been regarded as a sacred tree in India. It has religious value and it is medicinally very important since ancient time. It has hallowed position in Indian medicine system called as Ayurveda as a protective remedy for several mankind problems. The tree was worshipped as Mother Earth and is believed to nurture humankind because the fruit are very nourishing. Kartik Mahatma and Vrat Kaumudi order the worship of this tree. The leaves are offered to the Lord of Shri Satyanarayana Vrata, Samba on Shri Shanipradosha Vrata and Shiva and Gowri on Nitya Somvara Vrata. The fruit and flowers are also used in worship. Fruits of aonla are processed in various forms like Juice, Murabba, Chayvanprash, candy, powder and flakes which has significant role in mitigating several malnourished disorders. Aonla cultivation has gained special attention of researcher community due to its significant role in medicinal industry as well as processing potential.

The ber is an important indigenous fruit and growing in semi arid conditions in the country. Ber is grown in China for the last 4000 years and under sub tropical to tropical as well as Mediterranean regions of the world. It is cultivated widely for its resistance to grow in drought and other diversified climatic and soil conditions, so it is also known as ‘King of fruit’ of arid.

Origin and Distribution

The origin of ber is said to be India to South-western Asia. The ber is being cultivated in Northern India, central India and peninsular India. Hisar, Rohtak, Panipat, Gurgaon, Jind, Mahindergarh in Haryana. In Rajasthan it is cultivated in district of Bharatpur Alwer, Barmer, Jodhpur, Palib and Gnaganagar Jaipur in area 82, 73, 59, 53, 53, 53,41 hectare with production 365, 395,133, 294, 340, 597, 826 metric tones, respectively. However total cultivated area in Rajasthan is 738 hectare with production 5248 metic tones under ber during 2017–18 (Anonymous, 2018).

The area Sangrur and Patiala in Punjab; Banaskantha and Sabarmati in Gujarat; Bijapur and Bellary in Karnataka; Tirunalveli, Ramanathapuram and Salem in Tamil Nadu are major ber growing areas in the country. Besides India, ber is grown in Afghanistan, Iran, Syria, Burma, Australia, USA, Russia, Italy, France, Spain and Northern Africa.

Most often, a plant gets diseased when it is harmed by an abiotic agents or attacked by a pathogen. As a result, in the first scenario, interaction and contact between the pathogen and the plant are required for the occurrence of a plant disease. No disease develops even though a pathogen and a plant come into contact if the weather is too extreme at the time of the pathogen’s contact with the plant and for a while afterwards. This could be because the plant is able to fend off the pathogen’s attack or because the pathogen is unable to attack at all. Therefore, it would appear that in order for disease to manifest, a third component—a set of environmental factors falling within a favorable range—must also exist. The degree of disease severity in both individual plants and plant populations is impacted by changes in any one of the three components, which can each show significant fluctuation. Plants can exhibit genetic uniformity over a wide area, be of a species or variety that may be more or less resistant to the pathogen, or they may be too young or too old for the pathogen to prefer. All of these factors can either accelerate or slow down the rate at which a particular pathogen causes disease. The way the three elements of disease interact has frequently been represented as a triangle (Fig. 2-1), which is commonly known as the “disease triangle.”

Pineapple (Ananas comosus L.) is an important commercial fruit crop belongs to family Bromeliaceae. It is one of the choicest fruits all over the world because of its characteristic taste and pleasant flavour. Plant is herbaceous in nature with narrow pointed leaves and 50–100 cm height. The inflorescence composed of 150–200 flowers arranged in a compact spiral cluster. The flowers are perfect with three short fleshy sepals and petals, six stamens, floral bract and ovary with three locules. The plant bears a single fruit of cylindrical shape terminally on a peduncle come out from the centre of the rosette. Pineapple fruit is a multiple or sorosis type fruit formed by the partial fusion of numerous fleshy segments from several separate flowers and edible part of fruit mainly consists of the ovaries, bases of sepals, bracts and cortex of the axis. Commercial varieties are self sterile but easily crossable with plants outside their varietal group. The apex of fruit bears a compressed, leafy and spiny shoot known as crown. The fruit weight ranged from 1.00–2.50 kg and has outer colour yellow and very golden yellow flesh inside. Pineapple fruits are mainly consumed as fresh fruit, juice purpose and also used for canning. The typically yellow fruit flesh is found suitable for fresh consumption when sweet (10 to 18% sugar) and moderately acid (0.5 to 1.6%). Peach (Prunus persica (L.) is an important deciduous fruit crop in temperate regions. The basic chromosome number 8 and somatic chromosome number 16. It belongs to family Rosaceae family, subfamily Prunoideae. It has a deciduous nature and can reach heights of 5 to 10 m. It is classified with the almond within the genus Prunus in the subgenus Amygdalus that is distinguished from the other subgenera by the corrugated seed shell.

The majority opinion among botanists today is that they are Chinese in origin and were transported along the silk road in ancient times, most likely by around 2000 BC, to Persia and the Mediterranean region. Introduction of the cultivated peaches probably took place in the latter half of the 19th century.

China, Japan, Iran, Turkey, and other Mediterranean nations have historically produced significant amounts of peaches. Peaches have been cultivated in these nations for thousands of years. The United States, Canada, and Australia have all grown in importance more lately. Due to insufficient summer heat, oceanic climate regions like the Pacific Northwest and the British Isles are generally unsuitable for peach growth, though they can occasionally be grown trained against south-facing walls to capture additional heat from the sun. In the British Isles, trees can thrive in a protected, south facing location and produce both flowers and a plentiful supply of fruit.

There are many cherry species, but only a few have been domesticated. The sweet cherry trees are large (30–40 feet tall) and usually pyramid shaped. Branches grow upright. The fruits are large, have a deep stem cavity, vary in colour from light yellow to dark red to purplish black. Flowers arise from clusters of 2 to 5 flowers on short spurs with multiple buds at tips; the distal bud develops into a leafy shoot. The flesh ranges in texture from tender to firm, and is sweet. Most sweet cherries are consumed as fresh fruit. The tart cherry, is sometime called “red cherry” or “sour cherry” and may have arisen from an unreduced pollen grain of Prunus avium crossed with Prunus fruiticosa. Trees are very cold hardy, but are shorter lived than sweet cherry. The fruit is relatively small, and have higher acid and lower sugar content than sweet cherry. Tart cherries are used for processing, jam, and pie filling. The Duke cherry is a hybrid of Prunus avium and Prunus cerasus and all gradations between the two species exist, but most varieties more closely resemble sweet cherry. Sweet cherries are the variety most often found in markets. They have a thick, rich, and almost plumb-like texture. Sour cherries are not usually eaten raw, but are widely used for making preserves, candy etc. Sour cherries are much smaller than sweet cherries and all varieties are self-fertile. Cherries are cultivated all over the world and the top 3 producers of cherry are Turkey, USA and Iran. The cultivated forms are of the species sweet cherry (Prunus avium) to which most cherry cultivars belong, and the another sour cherry (P. cerasus), which is used mainly for making preserve etc. Both species originate in Europe and western Asia; they do not cross pollinate. Some other species, although having edible fruit, are not grown extensively for consumption, except in northern regions where the two main species will not grow.

Agriculture like any other science is a body of truths synthesized and systematized and arranged in such a way as to show the operation of general laws and principles.

Agriculture is an art which embraces knowledge of the way to perform the operation of a farm in a skillful manner. The physical and mental skills are involved in agriculture. The skills may be acquired through years of experience viz. ploughing, stacking hay bundles, handling animals, sowing seeds, transplanting, driving a tractor etc. Mental skills are those involved in decision making for example when to plough the land, selection of appropriate crops, seed selection etc.

Agriculture is a business which is no longer a way of living or subsistence agriculture, where production is intended to meet the home requirements. Agriculture is intended to earn more income. Land, labour, capital are judiciously used. Like in any industry the farming industry should forecast the demand, tailor the production with demand to earn more profits. It involves processing, value addition, transportation, packing and storage in scientific way. Knowledge of employee and employer relationship or human resource management, export and imports, taxation, customs, tariffs and trade are required. All these aspects demand business knowledge in addition to the production and managerial skills. Traditional agriculture is no longer relevant for success in agriculture. Commercial agriculture or corporate farming, agribusiness development corporations demand entrepreneurs in agriculture rather than technologists alone.

Species determination in meat products is crucial for traceability and preventing fraud, especially in the buffalo meat industry, which faces significant price disparities across regions. The complex global trade networks, with many intermediaries and processing stages, increase the risk of obscured provenance and adulteration. This not only poses serious public health risks but also leads to economic losses. Thus, there is an urgent need for rapid, reliable testing methods to verify buffalo meat authenticity and detect mislabeling. Existing protein-based and DNA-based assays, including isothermal and non-isothermal amplification techniques, often lack sensitivity, specificity, practicality, repeatability, and accessibility. The present study introduces a Point-of-Care (POC) polymerase spiral reaction (PSR) assay for rapid, on-site identification of buffalo tissue, especially in resource-limited settings. The PSR method uses chemical-free snap-chill DNA extraction, highly specific mitochondrial d-loop gene primers for amplification, and unique chromogenic indicators for visual detection, overcoming the limitations of current detection methods. The effectiveness of the chromogenic indicators was validated against SYBR Green I and agarose gel electrophoresis methods. The assay showed high specificity, with no cross-amplification in common meats like beef, mutton, chevon, and pork, and sensitivity down to 10 fg of buffalo DNA. It detected buffalo meat adulteration as low as 0.1%. The assay’s accuracy was confirmed through comprehensive validation using diverse, blind, and processed samples, compatibility testing with a commercial DNA isolation kit, and comparison with standard buffalo-specific PCR. This study is the first to report a PSR colorimetric assay identifying buffalo tissue within 90 minutes in resource constrained settings.

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is one of the most important vegetable crops cultivated in the world. It is used as raw in salads and also used as cooked vegetable in the preparation of curries. Processed items such as tomato puree, ketchup, pickle, chutney, whole peeled tomatoes and tomato powder are also consumed considerably. It is a rich source of Vitamins A & C. Lycopene and other flavonoids in tomato serve as good source of antioxidants. Tomato occupies 5 million hectares with a productivity of 34t/ha. in the world. In India it is cultivated in an area of 0.88 million hectares with productivity of 21 t/ha.

Abstract: Cosmos, popular as garden annual in many parts of the world, has its origin in Mexico. Cosmos is cross pollinating and progeny can segregate widely for traits due to heterozygosity. Self and cross incompatibility, self and intersterility, limited fertility, reproductive barriers and seed sterility often pose significant challenges to breeders. The breeding objectives include development of suitable indoor plants, less susceptible to powdery mildew and more tolerant to abiotic stress. The biotechnological skills can be attempted in breeding.

Fishery resources get depleted due to over fishing and one of the important management measure is to assess the fish stock, get update on the status of fishing and devise measures to mitigate fishery resource depletion. Recent examples of such management regulations in Indian fisheries are implementation of minimum legal size for fish catch, regulations brought out to control length and size of fishing fleet etc. With multi-dimensional expansion of fishing activities in India, it is necessary to analyse stock data critically bringing out suitable recommendations for fishery management. Stock assessment models play a vital role in management of fisheries.

Fish stock assessment is an evaluation of the state of the stock as relating to changes in the abundance or composition of the stock to changes in the amount of fishing. It involves the use of theories, laws, models and methods propagated by various scientists. There are two general approaches - population model (Schaefer, 1954, 1957) in which the stock is treated as a single entity subject to simple laws of population growth and the analytic approach (Ricker, 1958, 1975) which considers the abundance of the population as determined by the net effect of the growth, reproduction and mortality of individual members of the stock.

Stock assessment gives us the maximum sustainable yield (MSY), fish mortality, the input and output into the fisheries. The various environmental changes as they affect biological and physical features of a fish species, family or the group need to be assessed by using a model for its stock assessment and the basic data is got from research and commercial surveys.

Research survey is a detailed investigation of the fish based on the objectives. It involves taking the data on biological parameters of the fish (length, weight, sex etc), the food of the fish including the percentage composition. Other factors include the environmental features such as time, weather, position of catch, physicochemical parameters of the water body. Commercial survey involves taking note of basic and important information of commercial usefulness e.g length-weight frequencies, percentage composition etc which are strictly for economic purpose.

Introduction

Aquaculture is the fastest growing food producing sector. According to FAO (2016), Aquaculture is the farming of aquatic organisms including fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and aquatic plants in all types of environments including ponds, lakes, oceans, and rivers. Aquatic resources have played an essential role in ensuring food security by supplying the enormous demand for animal protein. Around 17% of animal protein consumed by people worldwide comes from fish (Shah and Mraz, 2020). Fish provide the highest quality protein sources, essential amino acids, fatty, vitamins, and minerals which are lacking in others (Kwasek et al., 2020). The world population will exceed 9 billion by 2040. Therefore, to feed a rapidly increasing population, aquaculture production must increase globally

Algae are organisms that grow in an aquatic environment and use light and carbon dioxide (CO2) to produce biomass. There are two categories of algae: macroalgae and microalgae. Macroalgae, measured in inches, are large multicellular algae that often grow in ponds. Macroalgae refers to thousands of macroscopic and multicellular seaweed species. The term includes some species of macroalgae such as Rhodophyta (red), Phaeophyta (brown), and Chlorophyta (green). Algae species such as kelp provide important breeding habitats for fisheries and other marine species, thereby protecting food sources; Other species such as plankton algae play an essential role in carbon sequestration and produce up to 90% of the Earth’s oxygen. Macroalgae, or large seaweeds, grow very rapidly and can reach extraordinary lengths up to 60 meters (McHugh, 2003). Their growth rates are much higher compared to many land plants. For example, wild brown algae can yield between 3.3 and 11.3 kg of dry biomass per square meter each year, and cultivated varieties can produce up to 13.1 kg in just seven months. In contrast, sugarcane, which is known for its high productivity, typically produces 6.1 to 9.5 kg of fresh biomass per square meter per year (Kraan. 2010). Additionally, macroalgae are available naturally in water bodies on a seasonal basis, and farming them in the ocean does not require traditional farming land or fertilizers. This makes them a promising option for addressing energy needs, as they are not only used for food and hydrocolloid extraction but also have potential for ethanol production. Humans have a long history of growing algae for uses such as food, food additives, feed, textiles and papers, bio-plastics. In recent years, seaweed farming has become a worldwide agricultural practice, providing food and feedstock for various chemical uses such as carrageenan, animal feed, biofertilizers and growth promoters. Due to its importance in marine ecology and carbon uptake, recent attention has focused on kelp farming as a potential climate change mitigation strategy for carbon dioxide biocapture, along with other benefits, such as reduced nutrient loads and increased habitat for coastal aquatic species, and reduced local ocean acidification in addition to biofuel opportunities. The seven most commonly cultivated algal taxa are Eucheuma spp., Kappaphycus alvarezii, Gracilaria spp., Saccharina japonica, Undaria pinnatifida, Pyropia spp. and Sargassum fusiform. Eucheuma and K. alvarezii are cultivated for carrageenan (a gelling agent); Gracilaria is grown for agar; while the rest is grown for food. Arid lands are among the world’s most fragile ecosystems, made more so by periodic droughts and increasing over exploitation of meagre resources. Arid and semi-arid lands cover around one-third of the world’s land area and are inhabited by about one billion people, a large proportion of whom are among the poorest in the world (Malagnoux et al. 2007). Arid environments are extremely diverse in terms of their land forms, soils, fauna, flora, water, and human activities. Aridity is usually expressed as ratio of mean annual precipitation (P) to the mean annual potential evapotranspiration (EPT) where potential evapotranspiration is calculated by method of Penman, taking into account atmospheric humidity, solar radiation, and wind speed. UNEP (1997) has recognized four main classes of aridity: hyper-arid (P/EPT < 0.03), arid (0.03 < P/EPT < 0.20), semi-arid (0.20 < P/EPT < 0.50), and dry sub-humid (0.50 < P/EPT < 0.65). Of the total land area of the world, the hyper-arid zone covers 4.2 %, the arid zone 14.6 %, and the semi-arid zone 12.2 % (FAO 1989). Therefore, almost one-third of the total area of the world is “arid land”. 

Abstract

The Himalayas of Himachal Pradesh is prone to landslides due to inherent geodynamic conditions, rainfall and anthropogeny. Besides multi-variate studies on the landslides of Himachal Pradesh, instrument based early warning system was attempted by taking Jhakri landslides as the test site. Various instruments viz; piezometer, vertical inclinometer, Rain gauge, etc. were installed and the paper discusses about the methodology adopted in the installation of the instruments and the observations made from the instruments. While Piezometer did not reveal much information, the Tiltmeter showed minor movements.

Introduction

The hot arid zones in India are spread over nearly 31.7 million hectare area of which 41.5 per cent is arable and 19 per cent is cultural wasteland. These zones are perpetuated mainly in North –West and Southern part of the country. The major parts of the country under hot arid climatic conditions are Western Rajasthan (19.62 Million ha), North-western Gujarat (6.2 M. ha), South-western Punjab (1.45 M. ha), South-western Haryana (1.28 M. ha), Andhra Pradesh (2.16 M. ha), Karnataka (0.86 M. ha), and Maharashtra ( 0.13 M. ha). These areas/ zones are characterized by hostile agro-climate and fragile eco-system, an annual rainfall between 100 – 500 mm with a coefficient of variation (CV) varying from 40 – 70 per cent, low and erratic rainfall combined with extremes of temperature (450-500 cal/cm²/day); low relative humidity; high potential evapo-transpiration value ranging from 1600 mm in eastern part and 1800 mm in western part of the hot arid zones. Other important characteristics of the hot arid regions are hot winds with high velocity, poor soil condition, poor ground water with brackish and saline in reaction, poor vegetation, frequent occurrence of drought and frost, difficult to execute agro-techniques, difficulty in post harvest handling and marketing owning to limited and inefficient transportation and marketing facilities, etc (Yadav and Soni, 2008).
