It encompasses a range of scheduled activities designed to maintain cleanliness, chemical stability, and a healthy environment for aquatic life. Whether managing a small home tank or a large public display, failure to perform regular upkeep can cause water quality to deteriorate quickly, potentially leading to stress,
illness, or even the death of fish and plants.
Common maintenance routines include partial water changes—typically 10–30% on a weekly or biweekly basis—along with cleaning the substrate and tank decorations to remove waste and leftover food. Filters should be regularly inspected and cleaned to maintain proper flow and filtration. Additionally, both the inner and outer surfaces of the glass should be cleaned to eliminate algae and ensure clear viewing.
Water testing is another critical aspect of maintenance. Key parameters like ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, temperature, and oxygen levels should be routinely checked using appropriate test kits. Identifying imbalances early helps prevent serious water quality issues.
Health monitoring of fish and plants is also important. Watching for changes in behavior, eating habits, color, or signs of distress enables early diagnosis and treatment. For planted tanks, this might include trimming overgrowth, replanting, or adding fertilizers as needed.
Sticking to a consistent maintenance schedule not only keeps the tank clean but also extends the life of your aquarium’s inhabitants and equipment. It supports a stable and thriving aquatic environment where natural biological cycles can operate effectively.

Crop diseases are a significant threat to agricultural production worldwide, posing a major challenge to food security, economic stability, and environmental sustainability. These diseases, caused by a variety of pathogens including fungi, bacteria, viruses, and nematodes, can have devastating effects on crop yields, quality, and overall plant health. The causes of crop diseases are complex and multifaceted, involving a combination of factors such as environmental conditions, plant susceptibility, and pathogen characteristics. Climate change, soil degradation, and water scarcity can all contribute to an increased risk of crop disease outbreaks. Additionally, the widespread use of monoculture farming practices, which involve the cultivation of a single crop species over large areas, can lead to a loss of genetic diversity and increased vulnerability to disease. The consequences of crop diseases are far-reaching and can have significant impacts on agricultural production, food security, and the environment. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, an estimated 20-30% of global crop production is lost to pests and diseases each year, with crop diseases accounting for a significant proportion of these losses. This translates to billions of dollars in economic losses and millions of tonnes of food lost, exacerbating food insecurity and poverty, particularly in developing countries. In addition to the economic and food security impacts, crop diseases can also have significant environmental consequences. The use of chemical pesticides and fungicides to control disease outbreaks can pollute soil, air, and water, harming beneficial organisms and ecosystems. Furthermore, the development of pesticideresistant pathogens can lead to the use of even more toxic chemicals, perpetuating a cycle of environmental degradation. In this chapter, we will explore the causes and consequences of crop diseases in greater detail, examining the complex interplay of factors that contribute to disease outbreaks and the impacts of these outbreaks on agricultural production, food security, and the environment. We will also discuss strategies for managing and controlling crop diseases, including the use of resistant crop varieties, integrated disease management (IDM) practices, and sustainable agriculture approaches.
3.1 Symptoms of Crop Disease
Crop disease refers to any abnormal condition or disorder that affects the health and productivity of crops, including plants, trees, and other vegetation.

HACCP: The Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) is a scientific, rational and systematic approach to identify, assess and control hazards during production, processing, manufacturing and use of food. It ensures safety of the food. HACCP presents a good opportunity for the food industry for upgrading quality and bringing uniformity and consistency in their supplies to international market, or It is a systematic preventive approach to food safety that addresses physical, chemical and biological hazards as a mean of prevention rather than finished product inspection. It involves identification, evaluation and control of hazards which are significant for food safety.

HACCP plan: A document prepared in accordance with the principles of HACCP to ensure control of hazards which are significant for food safety throughout the food chain under consideration.

Haemagglutinins: A group of proteins of plants that are not antibodies and do not originate in an immune system but bind specifically to carbohydrate containing receptors on cell surfaces (red blood cells). It is also known as Phytoagglutins/lectins.

Haff disease: A pyrolysis due to the excessive consumption of various fresh water fish which contain the vitamin antithiamine.

Introduction

There is a growing interest in the role of different types of land use systems in stabilizing the atmospheric CO₂ concentration and reducing the CO₂ emissions or on increasing the carbon sink of forestry and agroforestry systems. Forestry has been recognized as a means to reduce CO₂ emissions as well as enhancing carbon sinks. There is considerable interest to increase the carbon storage capacity of terrestrial vegetation through land-use practices such as afforestation, reforestation, and natural regeneration of forests, silvicultural systems and agroforestry (Brown 1996; Canadell and Raupach 2008). Agroforestry systems are very important given the area currently under agriculture, the number of people who depend on land for their livelihoods, and the need for integrating food production with environmental services (Garrity 2004; Makundi and Sathaye 2004).

ABSTRACT

Phospholipase A₂ catalyzes the hydrolysis of glycerophospholipids at the sn-2 position and releases fatty acids and lysophospholipids. When the fatty acid is the arachidonic acid, a complementary metabolism leads to pro-inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins, leukotrienes, thromboxanes and platelet activating factors. Thus, modulating pro-inflammatory lipid mediator production by inhibiting PLA₂ activity remains a potential target for the development of new drugs for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. Medicinal plants have been explored therapeutically in traditional medicines and are a valuable source for drug discovery. Molecular docking studies were carried out for anti-inflammatory compounds from various plant sources with human non-pancreatic secretory phospholipase A₂.

5.1 APOMIXIS

Apomixis is derived from two Greek words “Apo” (away from) and “mixis” (the act of mixing or mingling). It refers to the occurrence of an asexual reproductive process in the place of normal sexual processes involving reduction division and fertilization. During sexual reproduction, developmental steps occurring inside the ovule produce the female gametophyte (embryo sac) and following a double fertilization event give rise to embryo and endosperm structures. Apomixis can be best described as the reference to the asexual process. In some species, embryo sac is produced not as a result of meiosis and fertilization but by certain asexual processes. The occurrence of such asexual reproductive process in the place of normal seed reproductive processes of reduction division and fertilization is known as Apomixis. Such seedling plants produced in this manner is known as apomicts. ’’Apomixis’’ is used synonymously with ’’agamospermy’’ (Stebbins 1950), referring to the asexual production of seed.

Apomixis (asexual seed formation) is a phenomenon in which a plant bypasses the most fundamental aspects of sexual reproduction—meiosis and fertilization—to form a viable seed. Plants can form seeds without fertilization, and the seed genotype is consistent with the female parent. The development of apomictic technology would be revolutionary for agriculture and for food production as it would reduce costs and breeding times and also avoid many complications typical of sexual reproduction (e.g., incompatibility barriers) and of vegetative propagation (e.g., viral transfer). The application of apomictic reproductive technology has the potential to revolutionize crop breeding. Apomixis is widely distributed among higher plants. More than 300 species belonging to 35 families are apomictic. It is most common in Gramineae, Compositae, Rosaceae and Rutaceae. Among the major cereals maize, wheat and pearl millet have apomictic relatives. Apomixis is reproduction where only one parent passes genes to the offspring (King, 2006). Apomictically produced offspring are genetically identical to the parent (clones).The method is mostly seen in plants, especially flowering plants. Apomixis was defined by Hans Winkler (2008) as the replacement of the normal sexual reproduction by asexual reproduction, without fertilization. Propagation from cuttings or leaves, is not apomixis. Natural replacement of the seed by an asexual method is apomixis.

To reduce the dependence on hazardous pesticides in modern agriculture, one of the most promising ways is to use insect-resistant cultivars. When available, planting resistant cultivars is one of our most effective, economically viable and environmentally sound tactics. The underlying concept of using host resistance to our advantage comes from the knowledge that most plants and animals are resistant to most potential insect attackers.

Our natural ecology comprises insects, which are known to have both advantageous and detrimental consequences. Insect pests are the main obstacles in maximizing agricultural crop output, since they directly or indirectly result in significant crop loss. The intricate relationship that phytophagous insects have with their hosts is the result of a protracted and ongoing evolutionary process. Because of this, it is impossible to completely eradicate them, but there is a hopeful fix for this issue, i.e., utilizing insect resistant crop varieties. Insect-resistant kinds are those that, with the same starting infestation level and similar environmental conditions, yield considerably higher yields of high-quality fruit than susceptible varieties. By boosting yield and reducing pesticide use, these varieties had an enormous economic benefit. There are a number of highly effective insect resistance mechanisms that the targeted insect pest cannot simply overcome. This chapter discusses various breeding strategies such as introduction, selection, and hybridization as well as some modern breeding approaches that have been used to develop many insect-resistant crop varieties that have significantly improved the world’s food supply, by reducing carbon inputs through reduced pesticide use. By expressing bacterial endotoxins and producing Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) crops, genetic engineering also aids in the production of insect-resistant crops. Furthermore, RNA interference (RNAi) and genome editing by CRISPR/Cas9 (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats/CRISPR associated 9) offer new avenues for the production of insect-resistant crops.

Indifferent stage: Primordia are present for both sexes (gonads and mesonephric and paramesonephric ducts), although genetic sex is determined at fertilization.

Gonads : are structuarally indistinguishable prospective testis and ovaries. The first sign of gonadal development is a swelling called the gonadal ridge on the medial side of the middle part of the mesonephros. It enlarges due to arrival of primary germ cells. Cells of mesonephric tubules invade the ridge to form clusters and besides surround germ cells resulting in gonadal cords.

The primordial germ cells of these gonads arise from the endodermal cells of the yolk sac. These migrate to the gonadal ridge through the dorsal mesentry. Migration of primordial germ cells from the yolk sac endoderm into the gonadal ridges initiates testicular (if SRY gene is present) or ovarian development. The primordial germ cells form the sex cells, called gonadal blastema. The somatic blastema (non-germ cell) forms the other parenchymal elements of the gonads. The germ cells are capable of amoeboid-like movement.

Vacreation: The pasteurization of the milk or cream under reduced pressure by direct steam is called vacreation. This process removes feed and other volatile flavors from cream and to pasteurize it for butter making. This is also called vacuum pasteurization (Plate 623).

Vacuum cooling: A technique of cooling vegetable (leafy vegetables, asparagus, brussels sprouts) having a high surface to volume ratio; rapidly and uniformly by boiling off some of their water at 10C and at low pressure (5 mm of Hg) into a sealed container. The produce is cooled by evaporation of water from the tissue surface and is more rapid than hydro cooling (Plate 624).

Salinity stress poses a significant threat to agricultural productivity worldwide, impeding crop growth and yield potential. Developing crop varieties with enhanced salinity tolerance is essential for ensuring food security and sustainable agriculture. Salinity stress, resulting from excessive salt accumulation in soil and irrigation water, adversely impacts crop growth, water uptake, and nutrient assimilation. Traditional breeding methods, coupled with recent advancements in molecular and genomic techniques, have enabled the development of crop varieties capable of thriving in saline environments. Genetic diversity serves as the foundation for breeding efforts, allowing the identification and selection of individuals with inherent salinity tolerance traits. Utilization of wild crop relatives and landraces provides a valuable reservoir of genetic variation for salinity stress adaptation. Incorporation of molecular markers into breeding programs expedites the selection of desirable traits. Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with salinity tolerance are identified through techniques such as genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and linkage mapping, facilitating marker assisted selection. Additionally, recent strides in gene editing technologies like CRISPR-Cas9 (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats–associated protein 9) offer precise modification of candidate genes responsible for salinity response, accelerating the breeding process. A holistic approach encompassing physiological and biochemical aspects is crucial for accurate phenotypic selection. Cardiovascular system consists of heart and blood vessels which include both arteries and veins. Blood vessels formation occurs in two stages i.e vasculogenesis and angiogenesis. Splanchnic mesodermal cells lining the yolk sac form clusters, referred to as blood islands. Vasculogenesis, the formation of blood vessels from blood islands of of Pander, commences during the third week of gestation in domestic animals first in yolk sac and later in the allantois.Development of blood vessels involves a complex series of events during which endothelial cells differentiate, proliferate, migrate and become organized into vascular network. Angiogenesis describes budding and sprouting of new vessels from existing vessels. This process a fundamental requirement for embryological development, continues postnatally.

Carbohydrates are polyhydroxy derivatives of aldehydes or ketones and undergo all the organic reactions common to the carbonyl groups and hydroxyl groups. The principal milk carbohydrate is lactose. It is a disaccharide. Hydrolysis of lactose with enzyme β-galactosidase yields glucose and galactose.

Lactose is the major carbohydrate present in all types of milk. The first record of isolation of lactose was in 1663, by Bartolettus by evaporation of whey. Milk contains only trace amounts of other sugars, including glucose, fructose, glucosamine, galactosamine, neuraminic acid, and neutral and acidic oligosaccharides.

Status of Lactose

Lactose content varies extensively in the milk of different species. Breed of animal, individuality factors, udder infection, and especially the stage of lactation regulates the lactose content in milk. The lactose concentration in milk decreases gradually and significantly during lactation; this behavior contrasts with the lactational trends for lipids and proteins, which, after a decrease during early lactation, increase significantly during the second half of lactation. Lactose synthesis is hampered during mastitis. Lactose, along with sodium, potassium, and chloride ions, plays the principal role in controlling the osmotic pressure of the mammary system. Thus, any change in lactose content is compensated by a change in the soluble salt constituents. The osmotic relationship between lactose and soluble salts during the secretion of milk partly explains the presence of high lactose in milk with a reduced ash content and vice versa (Table 1).

INTRODUCTION
The system responsible for controlling the angular movement of the front wheels of a tractor is called the steering system. This system reduces the effort required by the operator to turn the front wheels through the application of leverages. The key components of the steering system include the steering wheel, steering shaft, steering gear, drag link, steering arm, tie rod, and king pin.
When the operator turns the steering wheel, the motion is transferred via the steering shaft to produce angular movement in the pitman arm, through a set of gears. The pitman arm then transmits this angular motion to the steering arm via the drag link and tie rods. The steering arm, which is attached to the king pin (integrated into the stub axle where the wheels are mounted), influences the movement of the front wheels.
The primary function of the steering system is to control the vehicle’s direction. This is achieved by converting the rotation of the steering wheel into a change in the angle of the steering wheels’ axes through a series of links. The steering system also ensures directional stability, ensuring that the vehicle automatically returns to a straight path when the steering force is released. Additionally, the system is designed to minimize tire wear.
Steering systems can be classified based on their wheel operation: front wheel steering, rear wheel steering, or all-wheel steering.
When the operator turns the steering wheel, the motion is transmitted through the steering shaft to tire angular motion of the pitman arm, through a set of gears. The angular movement of the pitman arm is further transmitted to the steering arm through the drag link and tie rods.
