Micro propagation in also called as in vitro propagation. In vitro is a Latin word, meaning ‘in glass’. It refers to procedures done in controlled artificial environment, outside a living organism. These procedures naturally occur in the living system. Opposite to in vitro is in vivo which is also a Latin word, meaning ‘in living’. Biological processes that occur within the living system.

Micro propagation refers to the multiplication of plants, in aseptic conditions in containers under controlled nutritional and environmental condition. Micropropagation is done in artificial growth medium from various plant parts like meristem tip, embryos, anthers, axillary buds, leaf section, shootlips etc. It is a method by which a true to type and disease free plant can be regenerated from a miniature piece of plant throughout the year. Some popularly grown crops from tissue culture are as follows

Ornamental plants - orchids, lilium, gerbera, cordyline, begonia, ficus, etc.

6.1 Introduction

Grapes are being grown commercially in the tropics. The region between the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn which was once considered to be unsuitable for growing quality grapes is producing good quality grapes. Tropical countries where grapes are grown are India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Taiwan, South China, Australia, Brazil, Columbia, Ecuador, Mexico, Venezuela, West Indies, Kenya, Nigeria and Zimbabwe. In India, about 90% of grapes are being produced in the tropical states including Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. There are three main commercial uses of grape, viz., table, raisin and wine.

The internal combustion (I.C) engines are functioning on open cycle wherin the air is taken from the atmosphere and the exhaust gases are sent back in the atmosphere. The sequence of operation in a 4-stroke petrol and diesel engine involves Suction compression expansion and exhaust. The precise investigation of I.C engines are very complex due to open cycle system, the working fluid enter and leaves at different condition, quality of fuel and its combustion which make the task more difficult.

The plant growth regulators are the organic compounds other than the nutrients, which accelerate, inhibit or modify the various physiological processes in the plant system, when applied at low concentration. These growth regulators are readily absorbed and move rapidly in the tissues, when applied to the plant system and regulate its life processes in some beneficial ways to enhance the yield and improve the quality of the fruits.

The word hormone is derived from Greek, meaning set in motion. The five major phytohormones are auxins (indole-3-acetic acid and its derivatives), gibberellins, cytokinins, abscisic acid and ethylene. The key difference between plant hormones and plant growth regulators is that plant hormones are natural, while plant growth regulators are artificially synthesized and are applied to plants. Plant hormones are also called phytohormones. Plant hormones are the organic chemicals, which are synthesized by plants themselves naturally during the metabolic processes.These are synthesized at the given site and translocated to the site of action.

To accomplish experimentations in laboratories, sometimes we need microscope to test/validate our ideas/findings. A microscope is needed to examine objects which are very small which cannot be visualised by naked eyes. However, microscopic study requires some expertise in operating the microscope, particularly the sophisticated microscopes, as well as to prepare (peeling, sections, cutting, fixation, staining, dehydration, mounting, etc.) the sample, so that it can be appropriately examined for the anticipated details.

According to the scientific requirements different types of microscopes are used in the laboratories for research purpose. In this chapter, our aim is to acquaint you with the basics of using and handling of microscopes, particularly a compound microscope that is commonly used by the graduate and post graduate students for basic research.

Microscopy is often designated as the scientific investigation that is employed to review and analyse minute structures and objects using a microscope. The term “microscope” has been derived from ancient Greek words “micros” meaning “small” and “skopeîn” meaning “to look at or see,”.

Microscope

A microscope is a laboratory instrument used to examine objects (biological specimens) which are too small to be seen by the naked eye. The microscope must accomplish three tasks:

• Magnification- to provide a magnified image of the specimen.

• Resolution- to separate the details in the image.

• Contrast- to render the details clearly visible to the eyes.

Although we will tnroduce to you the different types of microscopes used for different speciments, our main focus is to discuss about compound microscope, which is commonly used in the laboratories. Compound microscope was developed around the beginning of 17th century.

Introduction
It is a fundamental biological process in which one cell splits into two or more daughter cells. Both unicellular and multicellular organisms rely heavily on it for growth, development, repair, and reproduction. There are two main types of cell division: mitosis and meiosis. Mitosis occurs in somatic cells and produces two genetically identical daughter cells that share the same chromosomal number as the parent cell. This process is necessary for tissue development and repair. Meiosis, on the other hand, happens in germ cells and results in the formation of gametes, which reduces the number of chromosomes by half to ensure genetic diversity in progeny. Proper regulation of cell division is vital for maintaining cellular health, and disruptions in this process can lead to disorders like cancer.
The different stages of cell division is as follows:-
1. Interphase
• Although not a component of mitosis, interphase is essential for preparing the cell for division. It is separated into three sub-phases:
• G1 phase (Gap 1): The cell expands in size while creating proteins and organelles. S phase (Synthesis): DNA replication occurs, guaranteeing that each daughter cell receives an identical copy of the genetic information.
• G2 phase (Gap 2): The cell continues to expand while new organelles are synthesised)
The cell checks for DNA replication mistakes and gets ready for mitosis.
2. Prophase
• In this phase chromatin condenses into visible chromosomes, each made up of two sister chromatids linked at the centromere.
• The nuclear membrane breaks down, allowing the spindle fibres to interact with the chromosomes.

SYNOPSIS

The availability of food is of paramount importance without which it is hard for human beings to survive. The recognized way of making food available is to produce but it is also equally important that food produced is utilized well without loss of edible food materials. The paper discusses on unused food, under- utilized food within and across countries, and puts emphasis on utilization and handling of food. In perspective, the paper highlights the steps to be taken up to save and utilize the food already produced.

Abstract

Before 1960’s, UAE was a poor developing country and almost there were no real signs of civilization. During the 1970’s two important things happened: H. H. Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the president of UAE, and the other Emirates rulers united together and established the United Arab Emirates and considerable oil findings were discovered. The UAE Leadership has proved to have deep future vision; in three decades the country jumped from a relatively backward scattered emirates to a well developed and civilized country.

Development is very obvious : from tents and sandy tracks to tower buildings and highways, from desert to green belts of palm trees and vegetables in all parts of the country, and most important, education, healthcare and all other services became the best in the region. Urban development was so sharp; someone who left the place 10 years ago can hardly know his location and services in all sectors became the best at the international level. The oil money was properly invested in development.

The split-split plot design is an extension of the split-plot design to accommodate a third factor .It is uniquely suited for a three –factor experiment where three different levels of precision are desired for the various effects. Each level of precision is assigned to the effects associated with each of the three factors. This design is characterized by two important features :

1. There are three plot sizes corresponding to the three factors, namely, the largest plot (main plot) for the main-plot factor, the intermediate plot (sub-plot) for the subplot factor, and the smallest plot (sub-sub plot ) for the sub-subplot factor.
2. There are three levels of precision, with the main-plot factor receiving the lowest degree of precision and the sub-subplot factor receiving the highest degree of precision.

The method of analysis is entirely analogous to that for the case of 2 factors. The analysis consists of 3 parts, between whole plots, between split plots within whole plots,between split-split plots within split plots, each part being put on the basis of a split-split plot in order that the parts may be combined into one complete analysis.

Jamun (Syzygium cuminii L. Skeels) is an evergreen tropical tree which belongs to family ‘Myrtaceae’. It is commonly known as java plum, jambul, jamun, black plum, faux pistachier, Indian blackberry, doowet and jambolan. Jamun is native to the subtropical Himalayas, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Australia. Its fruits are delicious and have great importance in folk medicine (Ayyanar and Subash, 2012).

Introduction
Gametogenesis is the process by which gametes are produced in sexually reproducing organisms. This process involves a series of cellular divisions and differentiations and can be divided into two main types: spermatogenesis (the production of sperm) and oogenesis (the production of ova). Gametogenesis ensures genetic diversity through the processes of crossing over and independent assortment during meiosis. A gamete is a specialized cell involved in sexual reproduction. Gametes are haploid cells; contain only half the number of chromosomes of a diploid cell. Two gametes one from each parent fuses during fertilization to form a zygote, a diploid cell with a full set of chromosomes. The primordial germ cells develop from the wall yolk sac and differentiate into female and male gametes. During and after migration of primordial germ cells, they proliferate by mitoses and male and female primordial germ cells surrounded by somatic cells of their specific gonads and differentiate into oogonia in ovary and spermatogonia in testis. Meiosis is the process of cell division (Meiosis I and Meiosis II) in two specialized germ cells i.e. oogonia and spermatogonia to produce haploid female gametes (ovum) and male gametes (sperm) respectively. Meiosis I allow genetic recombination where exchange of DNA segment occurs between maternal and paternal chromatids.
Spermatogenesis
The development of sperm in the germinal epithelium of seminiferous tubules of the testis is known as spermatogenesis. Spermatogenesis starts, when the male animal attains the puberty. The sequential stages in spermatogenesis are
1. Mitotic/multiplication phase: Primordial germ cells undergo a series of mitotic divisions and localized in solid cords of primitive sustentacular cells (progenitor of Sertoli cells) within the seminiferous tubules (testis). At the age of puberty, the cell cords differentiated into seminiferous tubules of the testis and simultaneously primitive sustentacular cells became Sertoli cells and primordial germ cells produce spermatogonia throughout the life, having the features of stem cells. These spermatogonia remains dormant until the onset of puberty. Sertoli cells are very important for both physical support and paracrine regulation of spermatogenesis, and also form the blood-testis barrier by sealing off the seminiferous tubules with tight junctions. The north eastern region of India, consisting of the eight states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura, has an area of 255 090 km2 with a vigorous monsoon dominated climatic and a dynamic hydro-geomorphic regimes. Endowed with a sub-tropical type of monsoonal climate, the region shows remarkable variability of weather and climate on a regional scale. It possesses about 30% of the total water resources potential and about 41 % of the total hydropower potential of India. The per capita and per hectare availability of water in this region is the highest in the country. The problems of environment degradation in the northeastern areas of India are, primarily impacted by demographic pressure, urbanization, natural disasters, soil erosion and land degradation. The region is visited by the southwest monsoons which make it one of the wettest areas in South Asia as well as highly frequented by the water induced disasters. The rapid melting of glaciers is initially expected to first contribute to excessive water flow and flooding in the region. Eventually with the full loss of glaciers, the shortage, when it comes, will likely arrive much more abruptly in time; with water systems going from plenty to want in perhaps a few decades or less.

Seed multiplication and production was controlled by a legally sanctioned system called Seed Certification. Seed certification procedures and designed to ensure physical and genetic purity, freedom from weed seeds and diseases and good germinability of the certified seed. Seed certification is done by the Seed Certification Agency (SSCA) of the concerned state or by NSC.
 
Objectives of Seed Certification

The objective of seed certification programme was formulated by Douglas, 1971
 
i)    to ensure genuineness and quality of seed.
ii)    The identification and their rapid increase of new varieties under accepted names.
iii)    The systematic increase of superior varieties
iv)    Continuing supply of quality material and their maintenance.

Nanomedicine is the medical application of nanotechnology. The approaches to nanomedicine range from the medical use of nanomaterials, to nanoelectronic biosensors, and even possible future applications of molecular nanotechnology. Current problems for nanomedicine involve understanding the issues related to toxicity and environmental impact of nanoscale materials.

Nanomedicine research is receiving funding from the US National Institute of Health. Of note is the funding in 2005 of a five-year plan to set up four nanomedicine centers. In April 2006, the journal Nature Materials estimated that130 nanotech-based drugsanddeliverysystems were being developed worldwide.

Seed Processing

Seed processing may be understood to comprise all the operations after harvest that aim at maximizing seed viability, vigour and health. It includes cleaning, drying, seed treatment, packaging and storage.

Introduction

As a chief feature of RCBD, formation of blocks is a necessity to achieve homogeneity of plots within each block so that an irrevelant source of variation existing to the error component could be removed for purposes of treatment comparisons. But quite frequently, in agricultural experiments, the fertility gradient varies in all directions so that the plots within a block in RCBD could still be heterogeneous. In order to control or remove this additional source of variation, one can think of extending the concept of blocking yet in another direction , orthogonal to the first direction, leading to a new design called Latin Square Design(LSD). In otherwords, if the blocking concept is one-dimensional in RCBD, it is two-dimensional in LSD. As a guiding principle for formation of two-dimensional blocks, it may be stated that each row-block and each column–block should remove as much variability as is possible from total variability so that error component becomes smaller. Studies have shown that modified atmosphere packaging (MAP), and controlled atmosphere storage have the ability to delay quality losses and thus extend shelf life of fresh or minimally processed or fresh-cut produce (Church 1994; Gil et al. 1996a, b; Lee et al. 1995). Modified atmosphere packaging of fruits can result in reduction of respiratory activity, delay in softening and ripening and a reduced incidence of various physiological disorders and pathogenic infestations (Artés 1993).
