10.1 Introduction

Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) is a chemical procedure for determining how fast biological organisms use up oxygen in a body of water. It is usually performed over a 5 day period at 20 C. It is used in water quality management and assessment, ecology and environmental science. BOD is not an accurate quantitative test, although it could be considered as an indication of the quality of a water source.

10.2 Typical BOD values

Most pristine rivers will have a 5-day BOD of less than 1 mg/l. Moderately polluted rivers may have a BOD value in the range of 2 to 8 mg/l. Municipal sewage that is efficiently treated by a three stage process would have a value of about 20 mg/l. Untreated sewage varies, but averages around 600 mg/l in India and as low as 200 mg/l in the U.S., or where there is severe groundwater or surface water infiltration. Slurry from dairy farms is around 8000 mg/l and silage liquor around 60000 mg/l.

Introduction Fishermen of Gulf of Mannar coast were largely depending on traditional fishing gears, and they were mainly exploiting the coastal fishery resources before 1960’s. After the introduction of trawl gears and mechanized fishing boats during 1960’s fishermen were more comfortable with plenty of fish catch, especially the high-valued demersal shrimps. The fishing effort was also increased at a tremendous pace in this region with the addition of stern trawlers. Consequently, our oceans are emerging as a new frontier for human sustenance and development, with fish taking on a pivotal role as a source of high-quality protein and a fundamental dietary staple (Baiden and Bissiri, 2007). Over the past few decades, aquaculture has risen to become the fastest-growing sector within agriculture. Since 2013, its production has even outstripped that of wild fisheries (FAO, 2020). This formidable challenge presents particularly alarming situations in developing countries where poverty and hunger persist (World Bank, 2014). In such a context, fisheries and aquaculture are anticipated to play a vital role in ensuring nutritional security (Subasinghe, 2014). According to the FAO, food production will need to rise by 70% by 2050 to meet the rising demand brought on by population growth and dietary changes (FAO, 2009). By effectively using the limited water resources, the fisheries industry may serve to address this issue and contribute significantly to nutrition and food security. A significant source of nutrition, food, income, and livelihood for millions of people worldwide continues to be the fishing and aquaculture industries (FAO, 2016). Additionally, fish contribute to global food security by providing up to 17% of the protein consumed by the world's population (Bennet et al., 2018), and fishing is one of the most widely practised livelihoods worldwide (FAO, 2014). Although fish are the most diversified group of vertebrates, they are the second most threatened species after amphibians (Collen et al., 2014).

11.1 Introduction

Salinity is the saltiness or dissolved salt content of a body of water. The technical term for saltiness in the ocean is halinity, from the fact that halides, chloride specifically are the most abundant anions in the mix of dissolved elements. In oceanography, it has been traditional to express halinity not as percent, but as parts per thousand (ppt ), which is approximately grams of salt per liter of solution. In other disciplines chemical analyses of solutions, and thus salinity is frequently reported in mg/L or ppm (parts per million). Prior to 1978, salinity or halinity was expressed as % usually based on the electrical conductivity ratio of the sample to “Copenhagen water”, an artificial sea water manufactured to serve as a world “standard”(Lewis, E.L 1980). In 1978, oceanographers redefined salinity in Practical Salinity Units (psu): the conductivity ratio of a sea water sample to a standard KCl solution (UNESCO, 1981a) (UNESCO, 1981b). Ratios have no units, so it is not the case that 35 psu exactly equals 35 grams of salt per litre of solution (UNESCO, 1985).

These seemingly esoteric approaches to measuring and reporting salt concentrations may appear to obscure their practical use; but it must be remembered that salinity is the sum weight of many different elements within a given volume of water. It has always been the case that to get a precise salinity as a concentration and convert this to an amount of substance required knowing much more about the sample and the measurement than just the weight of the solids upon evaporation. For example, volume is influenced by water temperature; and the composition of the salts is not a constant. Saline waters from inland seas can have a composition that differs from that of the ocean. For the latter reason, these waters are termed saline as differentiated from ocean waters, where the term haline applies.

Soil

Soil is the upper most crust of earth surface which supports plant growth. It is defined as a three phase system in which plants grow. These phases are solid, liquid, and gas are essential. Solid part is frame which provides space for other two. It consists of minerals, clay minerals and organic matter. The soil is also a living system with millions of microbes that breakdown organic matter. The microbes are very essential and survive only when soil is well aerated and rich in organic matter and devoid of waterlogged conditions. Texture of soil depends on the size of solid particles and classified as gravel, coarse and fine sand, silt and clay. Soils are classified according to the relative distribution of these particles. Likewise, arrangement of these particles is referred as structure. Generally loamy soils and crumb structure are most growing preferred for fruit crops. According to level of organic matter, soils are classified as mineral soil or organic soil and soil having more than 20% organic matter is organic soil like peat and muck etc. Minerals and salts lend chemical properties to the soil like pH, alkalinity, sodicity, salinity and cation exchange capacity which influences the availability of nutrients in soil. Therefore, for making choice for soil, soil analysis in terms of following criteria isessential to decide on land capability. Maximum numbers of fruit orchards in India are depleted from micro and macro plant nutrients which interrupted the growth and development of the fruit plants and their quality. Therefore, like growers are not attain profit desired. To obtain marketable fruits, nutrients managements are highly beneficial to the fruit growers rainfed areas. Analysis of soil is useful to determine the level of the elements available in the orchards to get maximum yield.

Hybrid vigour in plants has long been noted, and the first suggestion that it be exploited in vegetables was by Hayes and Jones in 1916. F1 hybrid eggplants were used on commercial scale in Japan before 1925. Demonstration of the value of hybrids in corn in the early 1920’s gave impetus to a few exploratory studies in other crops. Methods of its application to large scale field production of hybrids in vegetable crops were first proposed in 1932 using the self incompatibility system in cabbage and in 1943 using the cytoplasmic genetic male sterility system in onion. Today hybrid varieties are common in several vegetable crops viz., sweet corn, onion, tomato, summer squash, ordinary cabbage, cucumber, watermelon, muskmelon, asparagus, sweet pepper, chilli pepper, spinach, broccoli, Chinese cabbage, eggplant, Brussels sprout, Chinese radish, red beet, celery, bottle gourd, bitter gourd, okra, etc. India figures prominently in commercial exploitation of heterosis in vegetable crops like cabbage, tomato, okra, watermelon, muskmelon, eggplant, bottle gourd, bitter gourd and cucumber.

ABSTRACT

Exploitation of genetic resistance available in the local germplasm provides a rational solution to most deadly purple blotch disease problem associated with onion production in India. Keeping this in view, efforts have been made to characterize the identified sources of resistance available in the local germplasm. Three lines namely, MS-65-268, PBR-287 and Arka Kalyan-704 that were identified as resistant after screening, were subjected to Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis for their precise identification and estimation of genetic relationship among them. Highly susceptible variety Arka Niketan was also included in the study for better interpretation. A total of 160 ten- mer random primers were used in the analysis, out of which, 41 exhibited polymorphism among the accessions. Out of these DNA profile with 5 primers namely, OPB02, OPB13, OPC09, OPC12 and OPF08 distinguished the three resistant accessions clearly from the susceptible one. On an average of 2.65 polymorphic, 11.65 monomorphic and 14.3 total bands were produced per primer. The amplified PCR products were of the range from 300 bp to 2 kbp and were consistent, unambiguous and repeatable. Further genetic dissimilarity analysis based on the Ward’s method using minimum variance algorithm and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of these genotypes using the data generated from RAPD markers revealed high genetic diversity. Dendrogram clustered these four genotypes into two main clusters containing two each. PCA also confirmed high genetic dissimilarity. The least genetic dissimilarity (40.0%) was between PBR-287 and MS-65-268 where as the maximum (65.0%) was found between genotypes Arka Niketan-709 and MS-65-268.

Nearly 70% of the world’s population will live in cities by the year 2050, and cities currently pump out 70% of greenhouse gas emissions. Buildings alone contribute nearly 40% of emissions. This is also true for Indian cities, which are responsible for 40% of the energy use, 30% of raw material use, and 20% of land use. The residential and commercial buildings account for 31 % of the electricity consumption and are rising at 10-12 % annually. As per estimates, approximately 75% of the building stock that India will see in the year 2047 is yet to be built. For all these issues, renewable energy is the major solution.

Aquaculture, the farming of fish and other aquatic organisms, has experienced exponential growth over the last few decades, becoming one of the fastest-growing food production sectors globally. This expansion is driven by the rising global demand for seafood, fueled by population growth, increased per capita consumption, and the recognition of fish as a healthy and nutrient-rich food source. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), aquaculture now supplies more than half of the world’s fish for human consumption, a significant leap from the 1980s when it contributed only a fraction of global seafood production. However, this rapid growth poses challenges, particularly with respect to sustainable feed production.
One of the primary concerns in aquaculture is the reliance on fishmeal, a high-protein feed ingredient traditionally sourced from small, wild-caught fish species such as anchovies, sardines, and menhaden. Fishmeal is rich in essential nutrients, particularly amino acids, omega-3 fatty acids, and micronutrients, making it an ideal component for aquafeeds. However, its dependence on wild fish stocks has raised sustainability concerns, as the continuous harvesting of these species can lead to overfishing, biodiversity loss, and ecosystem degradation. Moreover, the rising demand for fishmeal in aquafeeds, coupled with finite fishery resources, has driven up its price, making it less economically viable for aquaculture operations, especially for small-scale farmers.

There is no doubt that, an impressive avenue gives any property the special distinction that it desires. In the past, Emperor Ashoka and Mughal rulers paid attention to roadside planting. Avenue trees primarily provide shade and act as windbreaks, weather conditioners-by purifying and humidifying the air, check radiation of heat and obstruct glare, limit noise and enhance the beauty of the street where they are planted. Roadside planting has two aspects; beauty and utility and both these aspects should be combined. This requires a thorough knowledge of plant material and imagination in planning.
