Uptil now known applications of essential oils, more and more areas are opening up which will benefit the industry. Use of essential oils in therapeutics is becoming popular in India, China, Japan and European countries. Aromatherapy involves the use of essential oils and aromatics derived from plants to cure diseases. These plants are known as aromatic plants. Aromatic plants possess odorous volatile substances which occur as essential oil, gum exudate, balsam and oleoresin in one or more parts, namely, root, wood, bark, stem, foliage, flower and fruit. The characteristic aroma is due to a variety of complex chemical compounds. The term essential oil is concomitant to fragrance or perfumes because these fragrances are oily in nature and they represent the essence or the active constituents of the plants. They are called volatile or ethereal oils as they evaporate when exposed to air at ordinary temperatures. Essential oils are highly concentrated, low volume, high value products.

ABSTRACT

The upper Agniar and Vellar river basins principally consist of three major rock typesnamely pink granite, gneiss and charnockite. The major geochemical pattern of these igneous rocks when studied indicate that charnockites have a trend of low Mg2+ and high Ca2+ + Na O to high K+ end, whereas the same is vice – versa for hornblende biotite gneiss and also for granite gneiss. The pink granite has an intermediate trend between the charnockite and hornblende biotite gneiss. The value of SiO2 in all the rock types was found to increase with the increase of K2O, Na2O and Al2O3. Further, a decrease in the values of MgO, Fe2O3, TiO2 and CaO was noticed with an increase in SiO2. On the basis of the distribution pattern of these elements, the origin of the igneous suites in the above two basins was inferred.

Introduction

Vegetables are important constituents of Indian agriculture and play important role in nutritional security due to their short duration, high yield, nutritional richness, economic viability and ability to generate on-farm and off-farm employment. Vegetables form an integral part of staple diet in India where 42% population is vegetarian and vegetables are sources of daily requirement of nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Our country is blessed with diverse agro-climates with distinct seasons, making it possible to grow wide array of vegetables. The role of vegetable cultivation in the country’s nutritional security, poverty alleviation and employment generation is becoming increasingly important. Water is a very essential component for human civilization, living organisms, and natural habitats. It ma.kes up a major part of plant biomass (about 90% of plant cytoplasm; Singh, 2014). Irrigation, the largest water user sector, is currently under pressure to produce more with higher quality by using limited water to feed the increasing population of the country. The highest proportion of water is consumed by agricultural crops, which is called the blue water footprint, and it is assumed that the water scarcity will increase in the future in view of the changing climate. India has 18% of the world population; however, the water resources are only 4%. Even with all the planning and development, the country has not even been able to provide sufficient drinking water to all at the end of the 20th century. The water sector is facing a number of challenges regarding the availability, accessibility, use, and sustainability of its fresh water resources. Further, the distribution of water in the country is also uneven over space and time. Unfortunately, Rajasthan is the driest state in the country and has been water scarce (with per capita water availability below 1000 m3/year) since 1991. The efficient use of water in agriculture/ horticulture without affecting crop productivity or quality by adopting water saving irrigation techniques is the foremost need. Fruit crops, which have gained commercial attention in recent years, are an important component of Indian agriculture. Due to low irrigation and water use efficiencies, irrigation managers are looking for the introduction of effective water-saving devices and practices for water management in fruit crops.

Integrated fish farming is based on the concept that ‘there is no waste’, and waste is only a misplaced resource which can become a valuable material for another product. In integrated farming, the basic principles involve the utilisation of the synergetic effects of inter-related farm activities and the conservation, including the full utilisation of farm wastes. It is assumed that all the constituents of the system would benefit from such a combination. However, in most cases, the main beneficiary is the fishes which utilises the animal and agricultural wastes directly or indirectly as food. As integrated farming involves the recycling of wastes, it has been considered an economic and efficient means of environmental management. Integrated fish farming, also known as rice-fish culture, is an age-old practice that combines aquaculture and rice farming. This method has gained renewed interest due to its potential to increase agricultural productivity and sustainability.

1) Fix the slides with May-Grunwald reagent (15 drops) for three minutes.
2) Without removing the reagent, the same amount of distilled water is poured on the slide and allowed to stand for three more minutes.
3) The dilute May-Grunwald reagent is poured off and the slide is immersed for 8-12 minutes in a watch glass containing Giemsa reagent (15 drops of concentrated reagent are used for each 10 ml. distilled water). The slides should be immersed upside down in the solution to prevent the precipitate formed in the staining mixture from adhering to the preparation.
4) The slides are washed with tap water and dried in air or with filter paper. The distilled water must be neutral or otherwise buffered. With bone marrow or lymph node aspirates a longer staining time is recommended on account of the greater cell concentration. We recommend controlling the staining time with the microscope.

For the space travel for some days to moon and back to earth, we need not establish the entire ecological system as greater quantity of O₂ and food stuffs can be stored and CO₂ and other unwanted materials can be fixed for establishing space colonies, we have to build a special space ship with important abiotic components which can be recycled for use again and again. The vital processes of production, consumption and decomposition can be established and balanced through biotic components. In other words we are creating a complete mini human ecological machine. Before we established this system, we should be quite familiar about the space problems and its implications.

Several attempts have been made to detect the biopotentials of microorganisms with reference to their ability to produce various enzymes with a view to use them in industrial processes and bioremediation applications. Enzymes are increasingly used as a new route to synthesize food ingredients such as flavours, emulsifiers, sweeteners, food additives, nutrients. With the advent of genetic engineering, a wide range of enzymes has become available on a large scale and this has increased the scope of enzyme technology.

MICROBIAL ENZYMES: Enzymes are proteinaceous complex organic catalysts of biological origin and vital constituents of cells. Microbes produce a variety of enzymes, intracellular and extracellular enzymes. Most of the microbial enzymes produced for commercial usage are extra cellular enzymes. Extracellular enzymes are secreted outside the cell and hydrolyze polymeric substances. Amylases and proteases are enzymes of economic importance. At present over 60 enzymes are in commercial use, of which three-quarters are hydrolytic enzymes. Commercial production of microbial enzymes utilizes a variety of fungi, yeasts and bacteria. The composition of the medium, genetic stability of the microbial strain and physical and chemical factors of fermentation influence the production of a particular enzyme.

Enzymes catalyze a variety of reactions during processing and preservation of food products and form a large group of processing aids. Food industry utilizes enzymes in the production of bakery items, dairy products, fruits and vegetables juices and products, tenderization of meat, modification of oils and fats, flavour production and preservation of food products. Enzymes have also found use in the manufacture of ingredients like glucose, high fructose syrup, citric acid, colour and flavour constituents.

Sheep and goats in temperate regions are seasonal breeders with breeding activity mostly restricted to short day seasons of the year (Maule 1962). Endocrine mechanisms regulated by the variations of the day length stimulate reproductive activity to have maximum conceptions during the period of shorter days and correspondingly maximum births during longer day periods after a 5 months gestation (Hafez, 1987). Thus, essence of seasonal breeding is to ensure maximum births during the period congenial for survival of young ones, including availability of feeding materials and favorable climate. In tropical regions with minimum variation of day length and less distinct seasons, feed availability is not much affected by seasons in particular. Hence most species of animals maintains reproductive activity throughout the year (Devendra and Burns 1983). However there found to have influence of various locally relevant factors affecting comfort of living such as feed availability, weather and other environmental factors. Accordingly, there occur seasonal peaks and periods of restricted reproductive activity and pattern of the same can vary according to the local situations prevailing year to year (Goel and Agarwal, 1988 and Wani et al. 1980).

Introduction

In order to keep pace with the development there is rise in energy use but it has adverse effects on climate due to greenhouse gas emissions from burning of fast depleting fossil fuels. In this context, we need to harness and use more and more renewable forms of energy, especially solar energy that is plentiful on most part of India. Also, at several locations harnessing wind power and utilizing biomass could be effective alternatives. Solar based devices may also work in an integrated manner with small wind turbines as hybrid devices. At present, about 20% of the country’s installed electricity generation capacity is contributed by renewable sources e.g. wind, solar, bioenergy, hydro etc., which is about 71.325 Giga Watt (GW) as on 30^th June, 2018. In agricultural sector, energy is directly used for pumping irrigation water, operating different mechanized farm implements/tools and processing of foods. Share of agricultural sector in total energy consumption is about 7-8% and further increase in energy use from its present value of 1.6 kW ha^-1 to 2.5 kW ha^-1 is expected to meet the production target of next 20 years.

Climbing plants are excellent examples of convergent evolution, i.e. having the same basic design that evolved repeatedly in unrelated groups. Mycotoxins are toxic secondary metabolites produced by different types of moulds which are present in soil, plant and feed ingredients. Ingestion of toxins will result in reduced growth and production performance due to reduced nutrient utilization, illness or death of animals. Analysing the presence of mycotoxin and its concentration in grain and feeds is necessary to eliminate the adverse health effects of mycotoxins in animals. Estimation of mycotoxin in feed ingredients is a challenging task because the concentration of toxin is at µg/kg or parts-per billion levels. At the same time, analysing inappropriate samples is a waste of resources. Mycotoxins are not evenly distributed in feeds or grains. If the specimen collected for analysis includes contaminated grain, the mycotoxin will be detected. If not, the mycotoxin will not be detected.

The objective of sample collection is to collect the specimen samples from as many parts of the feed lot as possible. The size of the collected specimen depends on the size of the load received. Sample collecting probes can be used to collect the samples from bags.

Despite the tremendous advances in agriculture, the agrarian output is still weather and climate-dependent. Frost or low-temperature stress is a single weather-related phenomenon that causes losses greater than any other environmental or biological hazard. As the plants are immobile, they are bound to undergo this stress and suffer damage under natural condition. For avoiding and managing the adverse effects of frost-induced freezing in plants, a reliable early warning/prediction of intensity and duration of frost is necessary.
