• Characteristic symptoms of the disease are pale, chlorotic, broad streaks extending from base to tip of leaves.
• At the advancement of disease, the leaf streaks turn brown and the leaves become shredded longitudinally.
• In severe infection, the downy fungal growth can be seen on the upper as well as lower surface of the leaves.
• Infected plants fail to form ear but if formed, they are malformed to green leafy structures.
• Complete ear can be transformed into leafy structure.
• Pathogen transformed all floral parts such as glumes, palea, stamens and pistils into green linear leafy structures of variable lengths and no grains are produced.
• Partial infection of ear head is observed in which some grains are produced and rest of the ear head is converted in to a green ear(Fig-1).

1. Introduction

Dairy industry size and demand precede all other segments of food industry. Reporting milk production of 146.3 million tonnes in 2014-15, India is currently occupying first position in world scenario (NDDB, 2015). In spite of limited shelf-life, milk offers various opportunities of product diversification, processing optimisation and convenient packaging solutions. All categories of dairy products are unique and vary in market value. The operating margins in value-added dairy products are almost twice of liquid milk business due to reduced need of refrigeration and added shelf-life. The appeal and satiety it offers makes them ambrosia for consumers. Baked and fried dairy products (BFDP) are those class of dairy products in which main processing operation is either baking or frying. In addition to preservation of milk solids for longer time at room temperature, manufacture of baked and fried dairy products add value to milk and also provide considerable employment opportunity (Pal and Raju, 2007;Patil, 2011). The characteristic flavour and colour development of the product rely on this unit operation or cooking method and it cannot be replaced. The unique difference in baked and fried dairy products is that in baking dough is prepared and for frying batter is prepared which vary significantly in characteristics (Table 1). The quality of the finished product greatly depends on how the dough or batter is handled.

Various types of equipment are needed and used to facilitate the process of baking. Depending upon the use, equipment may be as light equipment and heavy equipment.

Baking is no different from any other area of cooking, and as in other sectors only the best and the freshest raw material can guarantee good results. So selection of right kind of ingredients is of utmost importance. Another basic need of a professional baker and confectioner is to purchase the equipment required. The design and size depends upon the volume of sale expected. So in this chapter we are going to learn about the ingredients required for running a bakery.

Formulation & method of bread making Baking is an exact science that requires precise measuring and accuracy. Accuracy is crucial in baking because most baked products are made from the same basic ingredients: flour, liquid, fat, sugar, salt etc. the difference between baked products are often the proportion of each ingredients in the formula. If the proportions are off, you will end up with a different product or an unacceptable product.

The word “baked products” refers to a vast variety of foods, such as cakes, bread, cookies, pastries, and crackers, and a variety of other items, and it might be difficult to find a common thread that connects the members of this a varied group. The strongest common connection is that all of them include wheat flour in their recipes.

Balanced crop nutrition is a most reaJized critical factor in allowing crops to give their full yield potential. The application of macro and micronutrients through manures and fertilizers to achieve this balance is an integral practice in modern crop production system. Macro and microelements have long been recognized as being associated with changes in the level of many diseases and yield and /or quality of crops. Three major elements N, P, and K are the most studied nutrients which chiefly affect relative resistance of crop plants to various diseases. Others macro/micro/beneficial nutrients including Ca, Mg, S, Mn,Te, Zn, Mo, Si, Bo and Cu have shown varying degrees of disease suppression/induction on many crop species under various environmental conditions. Crop nutrition influence plant health through: i. affecting the growth, reproduction, virulence, and survival of pathogens; ii. resistance and tolerance, predisposition and escape in the host crop; and iii. root exudates and microbial interactions facilitatingbiological control. Balanced crop nutrition can protect crops from pathogens by: i. avoiding plant stress, which may allow crops to better withstand the attack of pathogens and ii. manipulating nutrients to the advantage of crops and disadvantage of the pathogen. The modern intensive agriculture which mainly relies on chemical inputs (fertilizers and pesticides) and fertilizer responsive HYVs (high yielding varieties) has led the self sufficiency in food production in India and several other countries of the world. But, the indiscriminate and imbalance use of chemical fertilizers along with exhaustive cropping initiated several second generation problems including widespread micronutrient deficiencies and increased attack of several insect-pests and pathogenic diseases. The excessive use of nitrogen and no or reduced application of phosphorus, potash and other micronutrients is creating conducive conditions for several crop pathogens and their insect vectors. This situation frequently results in serious crop losses during favourable environmental conditions for disease development. The specific role of macro and micronutrients in maintaining crop health, effect of their dose and form of application on suppression /induction of various diseases and interaction with other soil/ environmental factor (s) will be discussed in following sections.

Introduction

Agricultural lands in India have mostly low native soil fertility. On these soils there must be a regular application of nutrient inputs through chemical fertilizers and/or organic manures for a successful and sustained crop production to replenish soil nutrient reserves depleted by crop removal and other losses. It is essential to recognize that even in agricultural production systems with relatively low productivity level, the quantity of nutrients available for recycling through plant and animal residues is not enough to compensate the amount being removed by crops. Under these circumstances mineral fertilizers play a key role in those areas having low fertile soils by increasing agricultural production to meet out growing food demand. Chemical fertilizers are the major contributors as source of plant nutrients to enhance crop production and also to maintain soil productivity.

Nutrition plays a significant role in any livestock development program, and the expression of genetic potential for production depends on the adequate supply of nutrients. For profitable livestock production, it is essential to feed livestock nutritionally balanced diets with minimum cost and wastage, as feed cost accounts for more than half of the cost of livestock produce. Providing a balanced diet to animals can reduce feed costs, minimize nutrient wastage, and improve feed efficiency, thereby positively impacting the environment by reducing nutrient excretion.
The demand for animal products such as milk, meat, and eggs is constantly increasing to meet the needs of the growing human population. Better awareness of health and rapid urbanization, with a higher preference for quality animal products, has further fueled this demand. Human food is incomplete in terms of optimum nutrition without animal products like meat, milk, and eggs. To maximize the production of animal products according to their genetic potential, animals must be fed a balanced ration scientifically formulated to provide all essential nutrients.
Balanced feeding involves feeding livestock according to their requirements to achieve growth and production in line with their genetic potential. Understanding the nutrient requirements and the relative value of feeds as a source of these nutrients is the foundation of scientific feeding. Effective measures to achieve a balanced diet include accurate feed formulation based on the nutritional value of each feed ingredient, precise quantification, proper blending of different feedstuffs, optimal use of mineral mixtures, salt, feed additives, and the application of improved feed processing techniques tailored to the relevant species of livestock.

By reducing losses from pests and diseases, the agrochemicals sector contributes significantly to raising agricultural output. In order to meet the challenges of feeding India’s growing population and bringing foreign exchange into the Indian exchequer through the export of high-quality agricultural products worldwide, the prudent use of crop protection chemicals promotes sustainable farm management and offers socioeconomic benefits. Nonetheless, most of the marginalised farmers who are forced to practise subsistence farming are able to produce only enough food to support their family.

Industrial revolution took place in England during the period of 1760-1830. Accordingly, the production prior to demand was introduced. Many countries all over the world adopted industrial policies favouring industrial sector to achieve the fast development of the nation. Government of India also contributed its efforts in the same direction and issued the industrial policy of 1948, 1956, 1977 and so on making several financial and non financial facilities available to have substantial growth and development of industries in particular and nation in general.

Under the name of globalization and making the economy internationally competent, India took a revolutionary decision to follow new industrial policy 1991 opening the doors for investment from foreign countries and private sector even. In addition to this economic reforms have been adopted and advocated for the sake of national development. Three ‘D’ programme consisting of devaluation, decontrol and disinvestment, were also put on the national agenda, to achieve the set targets.

Abstract
Aquaculture is the fastest-growing food production sector globally, with finfish and crustaceans playing a significant role in meeting the growing demand for animal protein. However, aquaculture’s reliance on marine capture fisheries for essential feed ingredients, such as fishmeal and fish oil, presents significant sustainability challenges. The Fish In: Fish Out (FIFO) ratio, which estimates the quantity of wild-caught fish used to generate one unit of reared fish, has become a key metric in assessing the sustainability of aquaculture. A high FIFO ratio indicates greater dependence on wild fish stocks, contributing to overfishing and ecosystem degradation. This chapter explores the FIFO ratio, its role in promoting sustainable aquaculture, and innovations to reduce its environmental impact. Over the years, the global average FIFO ratio has improved, reflecting advances in feed efficiency and the incorporation of alternative ingredients such as plant-based proteins, insect meals, and by-products from fish processing. However, challenges remain in these alternatives’ availability, cost, and nutritional performance. Case studies, including salmon rearing in Scotland and shrimp farming in Thailand, demonstrate the potential of alternative feed ingredients in lowering FIFO ratios and enhancing sustainability. This chapter also addresses the limitations of the FIFO ratio as a singular sustainability metric, calling for a more holistic approach to evaluating aquaculture’s environmental and economic impacts. Ultimately, achieving sustainable FIFO ratios will require
continued innovation, improved feed formulations, and global collaboration to ensure aquaculture’s role in providing a sustainable source of protein for the growing global population.

Partial or complete loss of hair on the scalp is rather common among them. This is more or less to be expected in the female. Premature baldness is a tendency in certain families. Juice from balsam leaves treats warts and also snakebite, while the flower can be applied to burns to cool the skin. Impatiens balsamina L. has been used as indigenous medicine in Asia for the treatment of rheumatism, fractures, and fingernail inflammation. In Korean folk medicine Impatiens (‘Bong Seon Wha Dae’) has been used to cure constipation and acute gastritis by meat. There are mainly four forms of I. balsamina namely red, purples, white and pink.

ORIGIN AND DISTRIBUTION

Impatiens balsamina is a species of Impatiens native to southern Asia in India and Burma, but has been cultivated widely. It is now naturalized in many tropical and temperate areas of the world. Jones and Smith in 1966 proposed the Himalayan region as the centre of origin. The major centres of diversity are in highlands and mountains of tropical and sub-tropical Africa, Southeast Asia and the Indian sub-continent. In the U.S., Impatiens balsamina is found primarily in a wide strip encompassing the Northeast and Southeast regions from Florida to New York with specimens being found as far west as Missouri. Impatiens denisonii is a scapigerous herb which is found only in the Western Ghats in South India and are endemic in the Nilgiri Hills. Impatiens ecornuta, the spurless touch-me-not or western touch-me-not, is an annual flowering plant native to the northwestern United States and British Columbia in Canada. Impatiens flaccida is native to the Western Ghats in India and to Sri Lanka whereas, Impatiens hawkeri (New Guinea impatiens) is native to Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. It has been bred and hybridized in cultivation to produce a line of garden plants. The species has been crossed with Impatiens aurantiaca and I. platypetala to improve characteristics such as drought-resistance. Impatiens irvingii is native to tropical Africa. Impatiens namchabarwensis (Blue Diamond Impatiens) is a 40–50 cm tall perennial plant, native to the Himalaya overwintering by a thick fleshy rootstock. Impatiens psittacina, known variously as the “parrot flower” or “parrot balsam” is a species of balsam from Southeast Asia that was described by the botanist Joseph Dalton Hooker and was noted for its flower that resemble a “flying cockatoo”. It is known from Thailand, Burma and parts of India (Morgan, 2007). Impatiens sodenii is native to Kenya and Tanzania. It is widely cultivated as an ornamental plant. I. walleriana is native to East Africa and yielded ‘Elfin’ series of cultivars, which was subsequently improved as the Super Elfin series.

Abstract: Impatiens are popular seed and vegetatively propagated bedding plants with numerous series (Shadeglow, Firefly, Peach Ice, Circus, Hawaii, Pixie, Show Topper, Elfin, Shady Lady, Fanciful, Fantasia, Fiesta, Futura, Jewel, Minarette, etc.) and F₁ hybrid cultivars available on world market. The history of balsam development as a crop is highlighted. Continued domestication by flower breeders produced a wide range of flower colours and flower patterns. Ample genetic information and trait heritability has been established for this crop; plant breeding continues to produce new variants for commercial production. Continuous breeding and improvement of balsam focus on flower colour/ size/ pattern, double flowers, plant growth habit/ branching and disease resistance. Important traits for both production and landscape use include flower colour/ size and bloom time, larger flowers, resistance to biotic and abiotic stress and other valuable traits. Results achieved through interspecific hybridization and polyploid breeding are discussed. The chapter concludes with future prospective for research and breeding in the genus.

Balsam (Impatiens balsamina) is an annual herbaceous flowering plant valued for its attractive flowers and use as a loose flower crop. It performs well under warm, humid conditions and is suitable for rainy-season cultivation. The chapter presents its origin, distribution, genetics, botanical characteristics, varieties and climatic and soil requirements. Detailed production practices include seed propagation, stem cuttings, micropropagation, land preparation, nutrient management, planting, irrigation, weed control, mulching, staking and pinching. Plant growth regulators, insect pests and diseases are also discussed. Particular attention is given to harvesting, postharvest handling and yield, making the chapter useful for commercial cultivation and practical floriculture education.

ABSTRACT

The paper discusses distribution of bamboo, their uses and bamboo based agroforestry systems in India and their future potential. Bamboo, one of the fastest growing plant species is extremely versatile and has been traditionally put to a large number of uses. Application of modern technology and industrial processing has catapulted bamboo into a new global limelight. At present there is huge demand of bamboo based raw material viz., timber, plywood, bamboo flooring, edible bamboo shoots, etc. in the international market and most of the international market of bamboo is captured by China. In India, most of the bamboo raw material comes from natural forest. To capture the emerging bamboo market we have to increase the bamboo cultivation outside the forest under different bamboo based agroforestry systems. Experiments have shown that bamboo based agrisilviculture systems is technically and economically feasible in our country under different agro-ecological conditions. The agriculture crops which can be profitably grown with bamboo are soybean, pigeon pea, ginger, turmeric, etc. Keeping in view the international scenario, ecological conditions and taking clues from China’s success stories, some of the bamboo based agroforestry system components are also proposed.

5.1. Introduction

Back drop: Since the concept of greenhouse technology was introduced, metal and wooden structures were tried in different parts of the world. When greenhouse was brought in the tropical and sub-tropical areas, people tried bamboo as construction material for greenhouse instead of iron or wood. However, due to the non-standard character of bamboo, the standardization of design of bamboo greenhouse, as a model, was not possible. Actually all such designs were very much clumsy and not at all comparable to the well established models of greenhouse having metal or wood frame.

Hence it is an urgent call to establish a standard design of bamboo greenhouse that can efficiently compete with the other common & commercial greenhouses made-up of GI-pipes.

Innovation: This greenhouse is structured by matured, cured & treated bamboo instead of usual structural elements (GI/MS/wood). For that matter (1) innovated design and construction methods and (2) a new curing method has been generated. It is very tough to standardize the design of bamboo greenhouses, specifically due to the non-standardized nature of bamboo. Unlike GI/MS pipe etc, bamboos do not have the same dimensions and uniformity in size & shape (diameter/ width/thickness etc). Thus, in general, bamboo greenhouses are low in height and are of naturally ventilated type. However, there is still huge scope to work on design of bamboo greenhouse for different climatic situation to avail the benefits of its natural advantages and low cost.

ABSTRACT

The paper discusses the problems of soil and water erosion in the Shivalik foot hills and suggests strategies for improved land use planning and the role bamboo species can play in mitigating the problems. The paper also discusses the various bamboo species of the Shivalik foothills, their regeneration, planting practices, management and utilization pattern in detail.

Morphological characteristics

Banafsha is a small perennial herb with a short semi-subterranean fleshy stem (rootstock).The older parts bear fibrous roots. The upper younger portion is marked with close circular scars of the leaves of the previous years, and gives off elongated, rather fleshy, leafless runners. Leaves are ovate and crenate–serrate.

Floral characteristics

Flowers are borne on long, slender, axillary stalks (scapes) exceeding the leaves. Flowers are lilac, blue, white or purple in colour and borne on the main stem, the larger ones being 6–12 mm in diameter. The flowers arising from the axils of the cauline leaves are minute. The cleistogamous (underground) flowers measure about 1 mm across. Fruit is a few seeded, globose capsule. Flowering occurs during February–March, while fruiting occurs during April–May.

Banana (Musa sp), is consumed both as a fruit and vegetable. The sweet desert cultivars are generally called bananas and the starchy cooking types are called plantains. It is an important food crop throughout the tropics. References to the banana is frequently made in the Vedic literature, where its use in religious rituals is quite common. Today, it is a leading tropical fruit in the world market with a high degree of export potentiality. Bananas arrives at the world markets the year round. Though India is the largest producer of banana in the world, Ecuador, Hondurus, Columbia, Costa Rica, and Panama are the leading banana exporter, while USA, Japan, Germany, France and UK are the main importing counties.

Banana is believed to have originated in the warm moist tropical regions of SouthEast Asia. Its cultivation is confined to region between 30° N and 30° S of Equator. Banana is grown in many countries namely India, Philippines, Thailand, Uganda, Zaire, Tanzania, Ivory coast, Burundi, Columbia, Brazil, Ecuador, Venezuela, Bangladesh, the Caribbean Islands, the canary Island, USA(Florida), Egypt, Australia, Sri Lanka.

Banana belongs to the family Musaceae and genus Musa. There are several species of Musa which involves both dipoilds and triploids. Most of the cultivated bananas are triploids. They are further classified based on their genomic status. Bananas and plantains are today grown in every humid tropical region and constitute the 4th largest fruit crop of the world, followed by the grape, citrus fruits and the apple.

Varieties/Cultivars: Though there are more than 25 different kinds of bananas grown in India, Grand Naine, Robusta, Poovan, Ney poovan, Rasthali, Karpuravalli, Tellachakrakeli, Red Banana, Nendran, Monthan, Batheesa, Hill Banana (Veerupakshi & Sirumalai) are the popular varieties grown all over the country with different local names.

Banana is one of the most important major fruit crops grown in India and is as old as Indian civilization. It seems that it is one of the earliest fruit crops grown by mankind at the dawn of civilization. In India, bananas are so predominant and popular among people that it is liked both by poor and rich alike. It is the cheapest among all other fruits in the country. Considering the year round availability of fruits, unlike the seasonal availability of other tree fruits, it has become an inevitable necessity in any house hold in India, for all cultural occasions.

The bananas were grown in Southern Asia even before the prehistoric periods and the world’s largest diversity in banana population is found in this area. Hence, it is generally agreed that all the edible bananas and plantains are indigenous to the warm, moist regions of tropical Asia comprising the regions of India, Myanmar, Thailand and Indo China. Historical evidences show that the Arabs have introduced the banana from India to Palestine and Egypt perhaps in seventh century A.D. (Hayes, 1953). It soon became popular in those areas and later spread to East coast of Africa at a very early date and subsequently spread throughout the African continent. Bananas were reported to have introduced to Central America in 1516 A.D., where it spread rapidly and attained commercial significance. The spread of bananas to West Indian Islands was through Christian missionaries and wherever it reached it assumed economic importance due to its greater adaptability and commercial value.

Diagnostic Symptoms
• Early symptoms appear on the young leaves.
• Small spindle shaped spots on foliage with greyish centreand yellowish halo running parallel to veins.
• Spots are mostly seen along the edge of the leaf with defined margin and possess dark brown to black margin. Spots coalesce and whole leaf blade dries up.
• On the upper surface of the spots, fructificationsof the fungus appear as black specks unevenly and individual bananas appear undersized and their flesh develops a buff pinkish colour, and store poorly (Fig. 1).

The word banana is derived from the Arabic word “banan,” which means finger and it is known as “the fruit of the wise”. In the middle ages, the banana was thought to be the “forbidden fruit of paradise”. Bananas are the most popular fruit in the world. Members of the genus Musa are considered to be derived from the wild species Musa acuminata (AA) and Musa balbisiana (BB). It is not a tree, but a perennial herb the leaves of which are usually grouped together, forming a trunk-like structure called pseudostem. The origin of bananas is believed to be Malaysia or India. Bananas are a very important commodity for developing countries, with a clear dual nature as they are at the same time a major staple commodity and a fundamental export commodity. There are almost 1000 varieties of bananas in the world with lot of commercially recommended cultivars. The most commonly known banana is the Cavendish variety, which is usually produced for export markets.

Distribution : It is widely distributed in all banana growing areas and has got introduced into South India somewhere in the eighties and spread fast in the banana areas of Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Kerala and Karnataka.

Biology : Adults of the weevil are reddish brown to black and resemble the adults of the rhizome weevil in size and shape. They live for about four months. The snout is long with the characteristic geniculate antennae.

The genus Musa has been named after Antonio Musa, who was the official physician to Octovius Augustus the first emperor of Rome, 63-14 BC. Banana (Musa spp.) was perhaps the first among the fruit plants to be cultivated and there is hardly an difference of opinion that banana was one of the first food on which human relied upon. Banana was cultivated in India at very early times which is evident from the fact that Alexander the Great found banana cultivation in Indus river valley. In tropics, banana constitutes an important food crop for man and is a staple food of Buganda (Uganda), Wahaya (Bukoba) and Wachagya (Tanzania).

Origin and history : Banana is an important fruit of tropics. The fruit is recognized as the fourth most important global food commodity. India’s share is 32 per cent of the total fruit production. This is the only tropical fruit which is exported in large quantities and is leading fruit in the international trade. It is one of the oldest and commonest of the Indian fruit that has been cultivated since ancient times. Eve was said to have used banana leaves to covers her modesty in the garden of paradise. Banana is thus called apple of paradise. It is also known as “Adam’s fig or tree of wisdom”. It is used as staple fruit in most of the African countries and is used as ripe (table) or raw fruit (cooking). This fruit is available throughout the year. All the plant parts are being used. Banana is monocotyledonous plant true stem is rhizome which is a modified form of stem fruit is seedless due to parthenocarpy and the development of fruit is due to auxin stimulation. India has more than 300 germplasms, out of 600 reported worldwide. Edible banana has arisen as a result of natural crosses between two wild progenitors viz,. Musa paradisiaca and Musa balbisiana. Banana is being grown in many of the African countries between 300 N and 500 S latitudes. Important countries are India (1st place).

Banana is an important fruit of India ranking second fruit next to mango. Its name “Adams fig”, “Apple of Paradise” and the botanical name M. paradisiaca are suggestive of its antiquity. The edible banana is indigenous to warm moist parts of Asia and probably originated somewhere in the mountainous hot tropical regions of South-East Asia (Assam, Burma, Thiland or Indo-China region). Origin and History

It is believed that the earliest written reference to banana is in Sankrist and dates back to around 500 BC. Bananas are suspected to be the first fruit in the earth by some horticulturists. The origin of bananas is placed in Southeast Asia, in the jungles of Malaysia, Indonesia or Philippines, where so many varieties of wild bananas still grow at present. Bananas have later travelled with human population. The first Europeans to know about bananas were the armies of Alexander the Great, while they were campaigning in India in 327 BC. In the Middle Ages, the banana was thought to be the forbidden fruit of paradise by both Muslims and Christians. The Arabs brought them to Africa. Africans are credited to have given the present name, since the word banana would be derived from the Arab finger. The Portuguese brought them to the Canary Islands. Bananas changed during all these trips, gradually losing its seeds, filling out with flesh and diversifying. When Spaniards and Portuguese explorers went to the New World, the banana travelled with them. In 1516, when Fiar Tomas de Berlanga sailed to Santo Domingo, he brought banana roots with him. From there, bananas spread to the Caribbean and Latin American countries. Bananas started to be traded internationally by the end of XIX century.

Banana, Musa paradisiaca is one of the most important tropical fruit crops. India tops in the production of banana in the world and almost throughout the year banana fruit is available form one or another part of our country. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are the major states in cultivating and producing banana in India. The major insect pests associated with banana crop are described hereunder:

Banana weevil, Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar) (Curculionidae: Coleoptera)

It is most destructive and specific pest of banana and is distributed throughout the country. The eggs are elongate, oval (about 2 mm long), pearly white and present on upper surface and crevices of rhizome. The grubs are creamy white, stout, fleshy swollen in the middle and has red head capsule (Plate 10a). The full grown grub measures 15 mm in length. Pupae are white and found in the pupal chamber made in the periphery of rhizome. The newly emerged weevil is shiny reddish brown but soon becomes uniformly black (12.5mm in length). INTRODUCTION

Bangladesh is a very small country of 1,47,570 square kilometer area having a population of 150 millions. The country has only 8.29 million hectare (Bangladesh Krishi Diary, 2003) cultivable land against the huge population. The land area is gradually decreasing because of population growth, industrialization and other infrastructure development. This results in a declining trend of per capita land availability from 0.13 hectare to 0.06 hectare during the last few decades (1960 to 2000) (Food and Agriculture Organisation, Bangladesh Country Profile).

In order to ensure food security of this vast population and with the emergence of “Green Revolution” in 1960s, priority was given to produce more food in terms of grain through intensification of land usage. New crop variety (HYV), chemical fertilizers, pesticides and irrigation were introduced. As a result, immediate objective of more grain (rice) production had increased and Bangladesh had temporarily achieved self sufficiency in food (rice). Bangladesh made steady progress in crop agriculture in the post-independent period. Cropping intensity increased from 148 to 179 per cent and food grain production almost doubled during the period from 1969/70 to 1992/93 (Hoque, 2007).

However, a lot of HYVs, hybrids, which were introduced, required increased amount of chemicals, and over time they took a toll on the fertility of soil, gradually decreasing acreage production despite usage of high doses of chemical fertilizer and pesticides. Moreover, the natural disasters such as floods, droughts, etc., continued to result in fluctuation in production. Wide fluctuations in production led to large instability in food grain prices having serious implications for household food security and the welfare of the people. The attainment of food security and rural economic development, therefore, could no longer rely on the production of rice alone.

Scheme

The needy livestock farmer visits the banks in the local area and enquire with the bank manager about the livestock projects and after having discussion with him, he visits the technical expert. A scheme can be prepared by a beneficiary after consulting local technical persons of State animal husbandry department, DRDA, SLPP, etc. livestock co-operative society/union/federation/commercial livestock farmers. If possible, the beneficiaries should also visit progressive livestock farmers and government/military/agricultural university livestock farm in the vicinity and discuss the profitability of livestock farming. A good practical training and experience in livestock farming will be highly desirable. The livestock co-operative societies established in the villages as a result of efforts by the Livestock Development Department of State Government and National Livestock Development Board would provide all supporting facilities particularly marketing of fluid milk. Nearness of livestock farm to such a society, veterinary aid centre, artificial insemination centre should be ensured. There is a good demand for milk, if the livestock farm is located near urban centre. The scheme should include information on land, livestock markets, availability of water, feeds, fodders, veterinary aid, breeding facilities, marketing aspects, training facilities, experience of the farmer and the type of assistance available from State Government, livestock society/union/federation.

Setting up livestock enterprise be it a small dairy unit, goat unit, milk and meat processing plant, selling parlor requires capital. Lack of access to credit to expand the herd is a critical problem for farmers. There is little access to formal credit through the cooperatives or banks. Informal credit is available from private traders and agents of private companies, but the interest rate is very high. Keeping this situation in mind and to provide financial support from banks few major dairy entrepreneurship schemes have been developed and implemented by banks with the support of state animal husbandry departments across different parts of the country. National Bank on Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) is the lead bank for financial support of such schemes.

The barbados cherry, a member of the Malpighiaceae, is an interesting example of a fruit that rose like Cinderella, from relative obscurity about 40 years ago. It was at that time the subject of much taxonomic confusion, having been described and discussed previously under the binomical Malpighia glabra L. which properly belongs to a wild relative inhibiting the west Indies, tropical America and the lowlands of Mexico to southern Texas, and having smaller pointed leaves, smaller flowers in peduncled umbels, styles nearly equal, and smaller fruits. Etiology

Bordetella avium, a small Gram-negative bacillus, which is motile and aerobic. Differences in pathogenicity among strains exist.

Transmission

Recovered birds serve as carriers. Turkey coryza is highly contagious, and transmission occurs directly through close contact and contaminated feed and water.

Barleria, particularly Barleria cristata, is a perennial evergreen flowering shrub valued for attractive blooms, garlands, religious functions and ornamental landscaping. The crop has considerable commercial importance in southern India, while other species are used in ornamental and medicinal applications. This chapter covers the origin, distribution, genetics, botanical description and important species and varieties of Barleria. It explains suitable climate and soil conditions, propagation through seeds and stem cuttings, land preparation, nutrient management, planting and irrigation. Cultural practices such as weeding, mulching, pruning and pinching are described along with pest and disease management. Harvesting, postharvest handling and yield are also addressed.

Barley is believed to be originated from Asia and Ethiopia. Its Sanskrit name ‘Yava’ is mentioned in ‘Veda’ and use of barley in religious ceremonies has been described which shows that barley has been grown in India since ancient times. It is widely believed that the ‘Near-East region’ is the probable place of origin of barley around 8000 BC (Harlan, 1968). There are two theories regarding the origin of barley.

Barley is an important cereal crop grown all over the world and is used mainly for feed and malt purposes and little for human food. Barley is the world’s oldest grain, as evidenced by discoveries in ancient cities in the Middle East and North Africa. It has been cultivated for about 8,000 years, and today is the world’s fourth largest cereal crop. Considerable evidence is available that points to the role of barley as sustaining food source in the evolution of humans. Additionally, alcoholic beverages of various types and fermented foods prepared from barley are commonly referred to in the ancient literature. As other food crops (wheat, rice, corn and rye) became more abundant, barley was relegated to the status of “poor man’s bread”. In the United states, barley used as food is 1.5%, as animal feed 65% and in malt and alcohol production 30% (Newman and Newman, 2006). In 1991, barley used as food in European countries was even lower (0.3%) than the United States. In contrast, during the same time period food was the largest for barley in Morocco (61%), China (62%), India (73%), and Ethiopia (79%). However, current consumer interest in nutrition and human health may help restore barley’s status in the human diet. Nutritional qualities of barley have been known since ancient times. For example, Ajgaonkar 1972 described how ancient Indian physicians effectively stabilized type II diabetics some 2400 years ago. Treatment was remarkable simple and not really different from recommendations that are given to diabetic patients today, i.e., lose weight, change diet, and increase exercise.

1. Introduction Millets are the oldest crops known to mankind. They are mostly cultivated for human consumption however; some are also used as animal fodder. Barnyard millet Echinochloa frumentacea is a multi-purpose crop belonging to the kingdom plantae, order-poales, family-poaceae, subfamily-panicoideae, genus-Echinochloa & species-E. frumentacea. It was domesticated about 4,000 years ago with two main species: Echinochloa esculenta (Japanese barnyard millet) and Echinochloa frumentacea (Indian barnyard millet). The former species is mainly grown in Japan, Korea, and northeastern China, while the latter is grown in Pakistan, India, and Nepal. In India, barnyard millet is grown in the Himalayan region from the north to the Deccan plateau in the south and is popularly known as jhangora or sawan millet.
