Vector data consists of points, lines and polygons with x, y coordinates known as vertices representing the geographic location i.e. latitude and longitude. Vector data depicts the shape of the spatial feature. Points consist of single x, y locations. Examples of points are tower location, sampling location, etc. Lines represent 1 – dimensional features like roads, streams, etc., and are composed of many or at least two connected points or vertices. Polygons denote 2 – dimensional features like boundaries with three or more vertices that are connected and closed. The vector data are represented in the following figure (fig. 5.1).

It is known and well documented that ‘biological diversity’ (i.e. diversity within species, between species and within ecosystems) has been declining at a much faster rate than earlier time in human history. The current rate of extinction is tens to hundred times higher than the average over the past 10 million years and it is accelerating (IPBES, 2019). The estimates of the number of species getting extinct every year vary from low (200 to 2,000) to high (10,000 and 100,000) (Bar-On et al., 2018). The delicate balance of clean air, water and biodiversity in nature which helps in survival on earth, is rapidly being destroyed due to humans’ activity like growing of food, producing energy, dispose of waste and consume resources (IPBES, 2019). The current human population of the world (7.6 billion) represents only 0.01% of all living creatures and attributed to be instrumental in causing loss of 83% of all wild mammals and half of plants (IPBES, 2019). These unprecedented changes in important components of biodiversity are likely to continue or increase in the foreseeable future, unless we take active corrective measures (IPBES, 2019).

Whilst all biodiversity has intrinsic economic or social value, it is the ‘agricultural biodiversity’ (‘agrobiodiversity’ in short) that has the greatest importance for food nutrition and health security of humans. The FAO has recently defined biodiversity for food and agriculture (BFA) as a subset of biodiversity that contributes primarily to agriculture and food production (FAO, 2019). It includes the domesticated plants and animals raised in crop, livestock, forest and aquaculture systems, harvested forest and aquatic species, the wild relatives of domesticated species, other wild species harvested for food and other products. It also encompasses “associated biodiversity”

Several hazardous chemicals, microbes, and techniques like recombinant DNA technology are used for research and development work in research Institutes and universities. Therefore, the researchers, technical, helping and supporting staffs as well as the laboratory outputs must be kept free from contaminations. Thus, biosafety is necessary to prevent unintentional exposure/ release of hazardous chemicals, microbes/pathogens, and toxins to the laboratory staff and environment. Following the biosafety guidelines and ethical considerations are essential to maintain safety standards for the researchers as well as the environment. This chapter deals with various biosafety measures and ethical issues to be strictly followed while working in a research laboratory. The required safety level needs to be determined as per the chemical/biological materials are used in the laboratory to keep the researcher/environment safe for sustainable research and developmental activities.

Biosafety

The term biosafety is used to describe the procedure and policies needed to ensure environmental and personal safety. Biosafety refers to the containment principles, technologies and practices that are implemented to prevent unintentional exposure to pathogens, toxins, or their accidental release into the environment. A fundamental objective of any biosafety program is the containment of potentially harmful chemical/biological agents as precautionary safety measures.

Why Biosafety?

With the increasing number of countries adopting molecular biology tools and techniques in life science research and development activities, especially in the areas of agriculture and medicine, the biosafety issues are gaining importance to ensure biological safety for the public and the environment. Conducting research in safe and sustainable manner is not only a personal requirement but essential collective efforts to ensure biological safety for a clean and safe environment. This requires rules, regulations, monitoring bodies, and awareness among the workers as well as the public. Therefore, biosafety per se is an integral part of laboratory research and requires awareness among the researchers so that biological safety can be well taken care from the grassroot level.

Ethics in scientific research and innovation is not merely an adjunct to regulatory compliance—it is a core component of scientific integrity and social responsibility. It ensures that biotechnological advances are developed in ways that respect human dignity, safeguard biodiversity, and reflect societal values.

Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L., Family: Palmaceae) also known as Khajoor, Kharek is an ancient important fruit tree of semi-arid and arid regions of the world. It grows well under poor desertic soils due to its hardy plant characteristics and deep root system. It is also one of the most suitable fruit trees to grow under saline irrigation conditions. It is well known fact that date palm has its feet in the water and its head in sun. It requires dry hot climate for growth, development and maturity of fruits. In arid region, crop production is a risky preposition where date palm cultivation contributes in achieving food security, high nutritive value food, crop diversification, desertification control, income generation and foreign exchange earnings. It can be grown at such places where adequate irrigation facility is available besides dry hot climatic conditions (Chandra et al., 1992; Singh and Dhandar, 2007).

The techniques on hydroponics are widely used in plant sciences to elucidate several problemson nutrition. Primarily, this has been not only used to evaluate deficiency symptoms of an essential element but also used to assess waters stress effects in crop plants. There has been a considerable controversy whether such responses paralled with field responses. Though these techniques have their limitations, it is certain that it has its relevance in identifying certain genotypes relatively tolerant to some stresses such as water, O₂ and nutrition. Without entering to such debatable issue, it can be said thatwherenecessity demands, such techniques would proveuseful in demonstration purposes and evaluation of macronutrient deficiencies in tomato and maize. Thegrowing of plants in nutrient solution is called as water culture or hydroponics. These experiments in nutrient solutions are carried out to study the mineral nutrient relation of plants. By elements required for plant growth, specific deficiency symptoms can be produced in water culture experiments. Thesuccess of these experiments of producing deficiency symptoms depends upon the use of homogenous biological material and purity of culture solution in respect of different plant nutrients. Hydroponics is a subset of soilless culture. Many types of soilless culture do not use the mineral nutrient solutions required for hydroponics.

Plants that are not traditionally grown in a climate would be possible to grow usinga controlled environment systemlike hydroponics. NASA has also looked to utilize hydroponics in the space program. Ray Wheeler, plant physiologist at Kennedy Space Center’s Space Life Science Lab, believes thathydroponics will create advances within space travel. He terms this as a bioregenerative life support system.

Mode of reproduction
All the living organisms produce individuls of their own kind for the survival of their species which is called reproduction. Hence, reproduction is the biological process by which new individual organism (offspring) are produced from their “parents”. In vegetable crops, modes of reproduction may be sexual, asexual and both. Most of the vegetable crops viz., tomato, brinjal, chilli, sweet pepper, peas, cowpea, hyacinth bean, French bean, cluster bean, runner bean, fenugreek, lettuce, cabbage, cauliflower, knolkhol, Brussels sprouts, sprouting broccoli, radish, beet, turnip, carrot, onion, leek, amaranth, palak, spinach, asparagus, pumpkin, bottle gourd, watermelon, muskmelon, ridge gourd, snake gourd, wax gourd, summer squash, bitter gourd, cucumber, sweet corn, coriander, parsnip, etc. are exclusively propagated sexually for both commercial cultivation and breeding purpose. Some vegetable crops like, pointed gourd, teasle gourd, yam, taro, Jerusalem artichoke, globe artichoke, etc. are exclusively propagated through asexual mode of reproduction. On the other hand, some vegetable crops like, potato, sweet potato, cassava, annual moringa, etc. can be propagated by both sexual and asexual modes of reproduction however, they are generally propagated asexually for commercial cultivation and their sexual reproduction is employed for the purpose of breeding.

AMR has been exacerbated by human practices: approximately 50% of antibiotic prescriptions are inappropriate, 70% of global antibiotics fuel agriculture, and environmental pollution creates resistance hotspots [1]. By 2025, AMR directly causes 1.3 million deaths annually, with economic losses projected at $100 trillion by 2050 [1]. Priority pathogens, including carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE), methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and colistin-resistant strains via mcr-1, challenge last-resort therapies, particularly in low-resource settings [3]. This chapter delivers a technically extraordinary exploration of AMR, structured into genetic, biochemical, and evolutionary mechanisms, each elaborated with molecular precision and step-by-step clarity for learners. Genetic alterations provide the DNA-level foundation, biochemical pathways execute molecular defenses, and evolutionary forces drive adaptation and dissemination. It ensures scientific rigor and broad appeal for students, researchers, clinicians, and policymakers.

Azospirillum is a spiral-shaped nitrogen fixing bacterium. It also produces hormones and vitamins. Important species are Azospirillum brasilense and Azospirillum lipoferum. The amount of genomic bacterial data generated is huge. As of this writing, for example, over 200,000 Salmonella genomes alone are in the public domain with hundreds being added weekly. A whole genomic DNA sequence characterizes the maximum practicable level of structural detail on the individuating traits of an microbial organism or population. It can therefore be used to provide more accurate microbial genome recognition, evolutionary relations and a detailed catalogue of epidemiologically important characteristics. This has a significant role to play for outbreak research, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases, microbiology and epidemiology (Allard et al., 2019). Besides, DNA sequences are also a universal dataset which can theoretically be used to determine any biological function. This means that antimicrobial resistant (AMR) can be detected and to track the development and spread of AMR bacteria in a hospital or the community.

Carbohydrates (glucose) are the primary energy source for a body; when digested, glucose is the end product in human beings and simple stomach animals, but it yields volatile fatty acids in ruminants. Precise regulation of levels of blood sugars/glucose in the body is the net result of various processes like digestion, absorption, and metabolism operating under the interaction of various a) enzymes and b) hormones secreted by the different organs of the body. An abnormal secretion of any of the enzymes or hormones associated with the metabolism of carbohydrates disrupts the precise regulation of blood sugar, leading to various disorders.
14.1 Enzyme Deficiency and Disorders in Carbohydrate Metabolism
Usually, various enzymes are involved in the breakdown of carbohydrates, and if their secretion is insufficient, missing, or does not work correctly, it leads to different disorders.
I. Glycogen storage diseases (GSDs, glycogenosis, and dextrinosis)
Glucose is needed by the cells for the generation of energy and other cellular activities. If glucose happens to be in excess, it is stored as glycogen, mainly in the liver and muscles, for future needs. The stored glycogen can be converted back to glucose when the need arises. Many enzymes are related to this interconversion of glucose and glycogen. Deficiencies of one or more enzymes may lead to abnormal glycogen metabolism, leading to glycogen accumulation of normal or abnormal chemical structure in tissue, collectively called glycogen storage diseases (GSDs). Roman numerals identify different types of glycogen storage conditions. They are also classified under various categories like inherited metabolic diseases, autosomal recessive type, and X-linked type (VIII/IX type).

A system of housing is more are less synonymous to the system of management of livestock. Housing is essential to protect the animals from adverse climatic condition (rains, hot and chilly winds). Housing also help to maintain normal health of animals by proper feeding watering and reducing environmental stresses.  Housing allows the animals for proper rest, moderate exercise, suitable micro-environment and proper ventilation which are essential for comfort of the animals. While selecting the site a site for establishment of a dairy farm some points should be considered regarding topography, soil, nearby market, availability of labour, electricity, water etc. The housing system can be divided in to two type viz. conventional housing and loose housing system. The conventional housing system may be single row or double row depending upon the number of animals. The dairy farm consists of various building for different classes of livestock like calf shed/ lamb/kid/piglet pens, milking barn, maternity pen, cow shed, heifer shed, shearing room, slaughter house of pig etc. The ancillary structure of  a farm  are stores for keeping feed materials, equipment, milk house, silo, generator room, pump houses, AI centers, workers retiring room, office etc. The floor should be impervious and non-slippery. The floor should have a gradient toward the drain of 1 in 40 in covered area and 1in 60 in the open area for easy drainage of urine and washing of animals. The roof should be light, strong

Split-plot design is particularly useful when certain biological treatments cannot conveniently be applied to small experimental units. This chapter explains how large experimental plots can be divided into smaller sub-plots to accommodate subsidiary treatments. Main-plot treatments are randomly allocated to larger units, while sub-plot treatments are independently allocated within them. The design allows researchers to study main effects, sub-plot effects, and interactions, although greater precision is generally obtained for sub-plot comparisons than for main-plot comparisons. Examples include wood preservation and nursery experiments involving sowing methods and seasons. The chapter also explains the two error terms required for appropriate analysis of split-plot experiments.

Over the past several years, there has been significant change in consumer perception on quality and food safety. Consumers are demanding healthy, nutritious and cost-effective products processed under controlled hygienic conditions. Food safety concern, in recent years, has become dominant and important. The requirement of food safety and quality assurance has never been so demanding as it is now. Globally food safety is being addressed independent of food quality. In anticipation of consumer demands on food safety, food sanitary standards at national and international levels are under constant review. Several inter governmental agencies / organizations are engaged in work related to quality assurance and food safety. Amongst these World Health Organization (WHO) and Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) play the major role in protecting public health and defining standards of quality and safety aspects of foods for regional and or world wide usage.

Regulatory Institutions

The quality environment in the Indian food processing sector revolves around compulsory legislation which specify minimum standard and certification system. Legal standards are generally made to have control over the quality of foods offered for sale and to safeguard the consumer from health hazards posed by practice of adulteration. There are basically three types of Indian standards namely

Soil texture and mechanical analysis: The chemistry of the mineral framework was explained in Chapter II. Its physical properties are quite as important- When all the extraneous matter is removed from the soil we are left with a collection of particles of various sizes. These particles are not spherical in shape, but most of them are nearly so. At any rate the discussion is very much simplified if we suppose that they are spherical and the arguments advanced are equally applicable if the shape deviates from the spherical.

India has a population of one hundred twenty four crore plus and feeding this large a population calls for a strong FPI. The industry also assumes importance in the national economy due to the immense employment generation opportunities it offers and the export revenue it earns. Food Processing Industry (FPI) in India is a sunrise sector that has gained prominence in the recent years. Easy availability of raw materials, changing lifestyles and favourable fiscal policies has given a considerable push to the industry’s growth. FPI serves as a vital link between the agriculture and manufacturing sectors of the economy. Strengthening this link is critical to reduce wastage of agricultural raw materials, improve the value of agricultural produce by increasing shelf-life as well as by fortifying the nutritive value of the food products and ensure remunerative prices to farmers as well as affordable prices to consumers. The industry has very low processing level i.e., 2.2% for fruits and vegetables, around 35% in milk, 21% in meat and 6% in poultry products, which is significantly lower by international standards. For e.g., processing of agriculture produce is around 40% in China, 30% in Thailand, 70% in Brazil, 78% in the Philippines and 80% in Malaysia. Value addition to agriculture produce in India is just 20% with wastage estimated to be valued at around US $13 billion.

India has the second largest producer of food with arable land of 159.65 million hectares and has the highest acreage under irrigation. Next to China, India ranks second largest food producer in the world and has the potential to immerge the biggest with its food and agricultural sector. India accounts for less than 1.5% of international food trade despite being one of the world’s major food producers, which indicates huge potential for both investors and exporters. Food and food products are the biggest consumption category in India
