The major areca nut growing countries are: India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, China, Myanmar, Bhutan, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam. In India, it is an important commercial crop and also forms part of ritual offerings in Hindu religion. India is the largest producer and largest consumer of Arecanut in the world. The present production of arecanut in India is cultivated in about 4.97 lakh ha with a production of 8.33 lakh tonnes of nuts with the productivity of 1.7MT/ha (Source: Department of Agriculture, Govt. of India, 2018). Arecanut is predominantly cultivated in traditional states like Karnataka, Assam, Kerala, Maharashtra, West Bengal and Andaman and Nicobar group of Islands and it’s cultivation is spread to non-traditional areas in Kamataka and Tamil Nadu. Areca nut is providing livelihood security for millions of people in rural and urban areas.

The seed contains alkaloids such as arecaidine and arecoline, which, when chewed, are intoxicating and slightly addictive. The seed also contains condensed tannins (procyanidins) called arecatannins. Chewing the mixture of arecanut and betel leaf is a tradition, custom or ritual which dates back thousands of years in much of the geographical areas from South Asia eastward to the Pacific.

By alternating deep-rooted and shallow-rooted plants, nutrients are used efficiently and naturally replenished. Intercropping with legumes enriches the soil with nitrogen through biological nitrogen fixation, further supporting soil health.

Caffeine is a major pharmacologically active compound in coffee and it is a mild central nervous system stimulant. ³. In addition caffeine is added to many popular carbonated drinks and is also a component of a number of pharmacological preparations and over-the-counter medicines. A typical cup of coffee provides approximately 75–100 mg caffeine. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in its ‘Scientific Opinion on the Safety of Caffeine’ concluded that ‘habitual intakes of caffeine up to 400 mg per day do not give rise to safety concerns for non-pregnant adults. They also advised that intakes up to 200 mg per day do not give concern for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Humans, not only the infants but also the adults, are the only species that drink the milk of another species, particularly cow’s milk. But cows’ milk has a different in composition and contains in excess of nutrients than human milk. This unnecessary excess nutrients leads to adverse and allergic effects on human health. One of these is milk protein allergy and it is an increasing health care concern. In medicine, the term cow’s milk allergy (CMPA) is only used to describe reactions involving the immune system, while other reactions are normally called cow’s milk intolerance. The feeding of cow’s milk has adverse effects on infants and young children. There are various methods and tests to identify the CMPA and its diagnosis can be achieved by skin or blood tests. Several efforts have been done to reduce the allergic reaction of cow milk proteins and various technological processes have been applied. The treatment of food allergy should be nutritional and is based on the elimination of diet or, in the case of infants, on the use of hypoallergenic or “HA” formulas, diets and best alternatives to cow milk like some Extensively Hydrolyzed Formulas (EHFs) based on whey, casein or another protein source, and by amino acid-based formulae (AAF), Soy protein-based formulas, donkey milk, camel milk etc.

Discards result from factors like economic considerations, fishing regulations, and storage constraints. The aftermath of discarding involves various outcomes; the survivability of discarded fish varies, with high mortality observed in small fishes and those with gas bladders, death, or being used as bait. The timeline of discards, spanning from the 1970s to the present, reflects the increasing awareness and international efforts to address this issue. In 2019, the estimated annual global discards were 10.5 million tonnes, recorded significantly in the northwest Pacific and southwest Atlantic regions. This review article delves into gear-wise and species-wise discards, revealing variations in discarding practices across fisheries. The Indian scenario highlights the decline in discards, especially in shrimp freezer trawlers. The decline in discards is attributed to changes in fishing technologies such as bycatch reduction devices, management actions like discard bans, quantifying the economic disincentives due to discards, and societal attitudes that aim to mitigate discards. Regulations and initiatives worldwide, assessing discards in fisheries is crucial for sustainable resource utilization, as depicted in a flowchart illustrating the necessity of such assessments. In conclusion, reducing discards contributes to healthier ecosystems, sustainable fisheries, and long-term global food security, calling for continued efforts to minimize wasteful practices in fisheries, this article emphasizes the need for responsible fishing practices.

Organ of vision (Eye)

Caudal to the lacrimal fossa is a small depression for the attachment of obliquus ventralis muscle. The dorsal wall of the orbit is formed by the frontal and partly by the lacrimal bone. The supraorbital foramen, an opening of the canal perforating the root of the zygomatic process, is situated in the dorsal wall of the orbit. The ventral wall is slightly rough and is formed by the zygomatic bone, the zygomatic process of the temporal bone, the zygomatic process of the frontal bone and the part of the maxilla bone. The lateral wall (rim) of the orbit is formed by the zygomatic process of temporal bone and the temporal process of the zygomatic bone. Several foramina and/ or fissures for the passage of the vessels and nerves are located in the walls of the orbit. These include the optic, alar, oval, supraorbital, ethmoidal, lacrimal, maxillary, sphenopalatine, and the orbitorotundum foramen.

An attempt has been made in this paper to analyse the rainfall in standard meteorological week as well as monthly basis at different probability levels for Lembucherra by using computer based forecasting technique.

This chapter introduces plant analysis as a means of determining crop nutrient status and diagnosing nutritional deficiencies. It explains the selection of representative plant tissues at suitable stages of growth, followed by washing, drying, grinding, digestion and elemental estimation. Recommended tissues and sampling stages are provided for cereals, pulses, oilseeds, fibre crops, vegetables, ornamentals and fruit crops. Procedures are included for estimating nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur, boron, zinc, iron, copper and manganese in plant samples. The chapter stresses that reliable interpretation depends on correct tissue selection, careful sampling and freedom from contamination. It thereby connects laboratory measurements with crop nutrition and fertilizer management.
