Biotechnology has the potential to revolutionize many aspects in our lives, from healthcare to agriculture. However, along with its benefits, it also poses significant risks to human health, environment, and ecology. Therefore, it is essential to establish biosafety regulations and risk assessment frameworks to promote safe and responsible use of biotechnology. This chapter compiled an overview of biotechnology, the importance of biosafety regulations and risk assessment, IPR protection, contaminants, risk analysis, risk management in laboratories and fields, biosafety concerns to human health, environment and ecology, biosafety at international and national levels, bioethics, and general principles.

Overview of Biotechnology and its Potential Benefits and Risks

Biotechnology refers to the use of living organisms or their components to develop products and processes for various fields such as healthcare, agriculture, and environmental remediation. Biotechnology applications include genetic engineering, bioremediation, biopharmaceuticals, and biobased products.

Introduction

India has a coastline of 8,118 km, with an exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of 2.02 million sq km and a continental shelf area of 3,72,424 km², spread across 9 maritime States and seven Union Territories, including the islands of Andaman and Nicobar, and Lakshadweep. India represents 2.5 percent of the world’s landmass and supports a population of over one billion people. India is also one of 17 mega-biodiverse countries in the world, with 7.8% of the recorded species of the world, including 45,500 recorded species of plants and 91,000 recorded species of animals. The marine ecosystem is extremely diverse, attributed to the geomorphologic and climatic variations along the coast. The coastal and marine habitat includes near shore, gulf waters, creeks, tidal flats, mud flats, coastal dunes, mangroves, marshes, wetlands, seaweed and sea grass beds, deltaic plains, estuaries, lagoons and coral reefs.

Importance of Study

The detailed studies on the coastal and marine biodiversity of the Indian mainland are lacking, and so these habitats and the biodiversity are represented poorly. It is obvious that the biodiversity is distributed widely among different associated habitats and conserving a single area would never support all the important species and ecological processes worth protecting. Furthermore, biodiversity can only be conserved by preventing habitat loss and by restoration. The importance of any single species in the functioning of an ecosystem may not be high, but protection of a mosaic of habitats will certainly preserve diversity among the species of conservation importance. Also, to achieve the Biodiversity Aichi Targets with reference to the marine environment are to preserve ecologically sensitive areas and maintain the health of the marine environment by protection, sustainable use and conservation of marine living resources.

Role of Leptin in Uterine Function

Leptin is a 16 kDa protein consisting of 167 amino acids, encoded by the LEP gene located on chromosome 7q31.3. Structurally, leptin comprises four anti parallel alpha helices (A, B, C, and D), two long loops (AB and CD), and a short loop (BC). It has three binding sites: site I is in the C-terminal region of helix D, site II spans the surface of helices A and C, and site III is located near the N-terminal region of helix D. Its structural similarity to proinflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-6 and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor suggests its potential immune-modulatory roles.

Leptin’s effects on uterine contractions have been studied at length. In human uterine smooth muscle, leptin inhibits both spontaneous and oxytocin-induced contractions. Moynihan et al. (2008) reported that leptin caused a 46% reduction in spontaneous and a 42% reduction in oxytocin-induced contractions. A lesser degree of relaxation (36%) was noted in a larger study involving non-laboring human uterine tissue, while rat uterine tissue exhibited a 24% relaxation (Mumtaz et al., 2015). The concentrations used in these studies ranged from 1 nM to 1 µM, which includes the physiological range in pregnant women with normal body mass index (BMI). Leptin levels rise with increasing BMI during pregnancy (Hendler et al., 2005).

Abstract

Pollination studies in apple (Malus x domestica Borkh) were carried out in ten apple cultivars with three pollinizers. Flowering pattern of all cultivars was observed to be same. Flower number per bud ranged from 5.00 to 5.80. All the cultivars started flowering in the second to third week of March. Full bloom was recorded in 4th week of April and flowering period ranged from 16 to 19 days. Maximum percentage of anthesis was observed in the afternoon (12.00 Noon to 2.00 PM). Maximum percentage of anthesis was found in cv. ‘Hardeman’ (33.91%). Dehiscence was recorded to be highest between 10.0 AM to 12.00 Noon. Cultivar ‘Spurtype Red Delicious’ showed maximum percentage of dehiscence (35.59 %). Pollen viability ranged from 85.13 (Spartan) to 89.24 per cent (Jonadel) in two per cent acetocarmine. Best pollen germination was recorded in 15 per cent sucrose solution after 72 hours. Stigma attained receptivity two days prior to anthesis and remained receptive up to two days after anthesis with peak receptivity on the day of anthesis. Under different modes of pollination, the maximum percentage (over all mean) of fruit set was recorded in open pollination (41.98 %) followed by cross pollination (39.12 %), hand self pollination (0.66 %) and selfing by bagging (0.23 %). Maximum average fruit set was obtained when ‘Jonadel’ was used as pollinizer which was closely followed by ‘Ruspippin’. Cultivar ‘Gala’ and pollinizer ‘Spartan’ set fruit on selfing. Cultivar ‘Arlet’ had maximum fruit retention both under open as well as cross pollination in comparison to other cultivars.

India’s livestock sector is one of the largest in the world and dairy farming is the single largest contributor to country’s GDP, apart from being the biggest source of employment. India has 56.7 per cent of world’s buffaloes. Buffalo genetic resource greatly helps the countries to assess their strengths and potential to harness the nature’s gift and India is fortunate in terms of having largest buffalo population, huge buffalo germplasm diversity (13 recognized plus 14 distinct population groups) and the world renowned buffalo breeds: Murrah, Banni, Jaffrabadi and Nili-Ravi.

Though the extension education was originated as a “field approach” aimed to enhance the life quality of rural people, it has evolved into a scientific discipline that relies heavily on empirical research to develop and test its “field-oriented” approaches and methods. Since its birth, the extension research has passed through several phases and a range of research paradigms like community mobilisation, farmer participatory approaches, technology assessment and refinement, impact assessment, Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) aided development, etc.

Introduction

Soil organic carbon (SOC) content plays a key role in maintaining soil fertility in agricultural farm. At present, there has been great interest to reduce the atmospheric CO₂ level through a chain of increasing vegetation carbon pools first and then to store them as soil carbon pool. To quickly assess the soil carbon restoration programmes, it is important to know how much soil carbon is stored in an agricultural farm through adoption of different land management practices. Average SOC content is considered in most soil carbon pool calculations in spite of its large spatial variation in landscape, and thus leads to inaccurate estimate of SOC stock for an area. Therefore, reliable estimates of SOC pools and their spatial variability are essential to establish the soil carbon sequestration programmes at different landscape scales. Here, a case example of assessing the spatial variation at a typical agricultural farm is discussed. The experimental field was located at Badoda village of Jaisalmer district, Rajasthan covering an area of about 76.12 ha. The farm lies between 265^o2′30″-26°53′30″ N and 71°12′15″-71°13′15″ E (Fig. 24.1) and 20 km away from Jaisalmer city in eastward direction. Elevation of the farm ranged from 232 m to 248 m above mean sea level with an overall slope from south to north. Among total area of the farm, 85.38% area was under cultivation in four main blocks: block A, B, C, and D whereas rest area was under grassland.

ABSTRACT

Three medicinal plants namely, Eryngium foetidum (Apiaceae), Centella asiatic (Apiaceae) and Hemidesmus indicus (Asclepiadaceae) were collected from Similipa Biosphere Reserve forest and used in this investigation. Ethanolic, methanolic chloroform and aqueous extracts of different parts like leaf, root and stem were prepare through standard techniques and screened for their anticandidal potencies agains Candida albicans, C. tropicalis and C. krusei. Anticandidal activity of the extracts wer tested using preliminary and secondary screening methods, like disc diffusion metho (DDM) & agar-cup-plate-method (ACPM) and poisoned food technique (PFT respectively. On an average the inhibitory tendency of the extracts can be arranged as ethanolic extracts > methanolic extacts > chloroform extracts > aqueous extracts Maximum degree of inhibition was observed against C. krusei. Among the plant Hemidesmus indicus showed better anticandidal activities in comparison to other tw plants tested.

Introduction

Whey is the serum or watery part of the milk that remains after separation of curd that result from the acid or proteolytic enzyme mediated co-agulation of milk. It is major by product of dairy industries manufacturing products like channa, paneer, cheese and chakka (Sharma and Bhatia, 1999).The current world production of whey is estimated at about 165 million tones, in that cheese whey accounts for nearly 95 % of total whey. In India near about one million tonne of whey is annually derived, in that major source of whey is from the production of channa, paneer and shrikhand production. This is mostly thrown away as a waste which creates environmental pollution, also in that way about 70, 000 tonnes of Nutritious solids are lost (Puranik, 1999).

Principle

A cross is made between two true-breeding parents differing in two pairs of genes, producing an F₁ generation. These plants are inter-crossed to produce an F₂ generation. Mendel second law i.e., Law of independent assortment can be explained by studying the inheritance of two characters at a time, simultaneously. When two phenotypically distinct parents differing with respect to two characters governed by two pair of genes are crossed together. Each pair of genes assorts independently into all possible combination forming four kinds of progeny, two of these are parental type and two are recombinant types.

The Review of literature is also a resource paper, which includes the current knowledge including substantive findings, as well as theoretical and methodological contributions to a particular topic. These are available mostly in academic and scholastic journals.

Review of literature provide the basics for research in nearly every academic f ield. The aim of review of literature is to highlight what has been done so far in the field of interest and how our findings are related to earlier research. Spermatozoa, the male reproductive cells, play a crucial role in fertilization and subsequent embryonic development. However, toxic substances such as heavy metals(lead) can disrupt spermatozoa function through various mechanisms, including oxidative stress, DNA damage, and disruption of cellular homeostasis. The toxic effects can impair sperm motility, viability, and acrosomal integrity, ultimately leading to reduced fertility. Livestock are not immune to these toxic insults, which can compromise their reproductive efficiency and agricultural productivity. Lead (Pb) is a toxic pollutant and is extensively distributed in the environmental and biological systems. This topic envisages the detrimental effects of lead on spermatozoa functions, shedding light on the underlying mechanisms, signal transduction pathways, and sperm kinematic alterations.

Introduction

Restriction enzymes, recognizes specific base sequences in double-helical DNA and cleaves at specific places, both strands of a duplex containing the recognized sequences. To biochemists, these exquisitely precise scalpels are marvelous gifts of nature. They are indispensable for analyzing chromosome structure, sequencing very long DNA molecules, isolating genes, and creating new DNA molecules that can be cloned. Werner Arber and Hamilton Smith discovered restriction enzymes, and Daniel Nathans pioneered their use in the late 1960s.

These specialized instruments are used for operation of skeletal system. Common instruments are as follows :

    1.    Loman bone holding clamp : It is used for holding fractured bony ends with bone plates.
 
    2.    Bone plates : are used for rigid immobilization of fractured fragments. Bone plates are of difference shapes, sizes and with varying number of holes. These are of following types :
 
        a.    Dynamic compression plate.
        b.    Neutralization plate.
        c.    Shcrnab plate etc.
 
    3.    Bone screws : are either used to immobilize fractured fragments or to fix bone plates. They are of different sizes and classified in to cancellous and cortical types.

    1.    The heifer is bred (naturally or by insemination) before the age of two years.

    2.    The gestation period is nine months and one week.

    3.    After calving, the cow gives milk for 10 months.

    4.    1 – 2 months after calving the cow will again be bred.

    5.    The cow then continues to give milk for about 300 days. This period is known as lactation.
