INTRODUCTION

Research in agriculture and allied activities and the subsequent technological innovations are important requisites for enhanced productivity and generating income for the farmers. In India, farming is a way of livelihood to 65 per cent of nearly 1. 1 billion population. Our farm population is increasing annually by 1. 84 per cent. The average farm size is becoming smaller each year and the cost-riskreturn structure of farming is becoming adverse with the result that farmers are getting increasingly indebted. There is no option except to produce more food and other commodities under conditions of diminishing per capita arable land and irrigation water resource. Hence, we must harness the best in frontier technologies, thus integrate them with traditional wisdom and thereby launch an eco-technology movement.

The productivity in agricultural sectors is dependent on several bio physical and socio-economic factors. The significant biophysical factors are weather parameters, soil health, water resources, crops/ varieties and pest environments. In order to monitor the impact of weather parameters, we need to have weather forecasts and the accuracy of which to harvest the economic benefits should be given top priority. Only fifty years ago, weather forecasting was an art which was derived after interpretation of data received from land based observing stations, balloons and aircraft etc. Now, modern technology particularly computers / weather satellites / radars has resulted in enormous improvements in the accuracy of weather forecasting with the help of various coordinated meteorological observing networks.

Introduction

Agriculture is one of the most important sectors of the global economy and provides food, fibre, and other crucial commodities to the world’s population. With the increasing global population, there is a need to improve agricultural efficiency and productivity to fulfil the growing demand for food. The use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) has been recognized as a critical factor in the development of agriculture and rural areas. In recent years, e-extension has emerged as a promising ICT tool for agriculture development, enabling farmers to access information and services remotely.

Diabetes mellitus is a disease the related to metabolism of the body and malfunctioning of pancreas. Pancreas having alpha and beta cells where alpha cells produce enzymes needed for the digestion and beta cells mainly produce insulin. One important component that regulates blood glucose (sugar) levels and how it is delivered to the body’s cells is Insulin. The body’s cells run out of their primary energy source when insulin levels are low. Insulin voices the body’s cells to engross glucose from the bloodstream. Without an satisfactory amount of insulin glucose cannot invade the cells and so it accrues in the blood, triggering hyperglycemia (high blood sugar). Litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn), like most fruit tree crops, is usually attacked by two or three key pests, several secondary pests and a large number of occasional pests in localized areas where it is grown. Litchi is an important subtropical evergreen fruit crop belongs to family Sapindaceae. It is known as queen of the fruit due to its attractive deep pink/red colours and flavoured juicy aril (Singh et al., 2012).

Insect pest attacks on litchi, in China there are 193 species of litchi pests in two classes, 11 orders, and 57 families. In India, nearly 42 insects and mite species reported to attacking on trees and fruits of litchi at different stages of growth (Singh et al., 2012). The majority belong to the Lepidoptera and Coleoptera, followed by the Homoptera and Hemiptera. However, only about three or four key pests including fruit and flower borers, sucking bugs, stem borers and erinose mites which require regular control, and the species involved vary between orchards. Secondary pests viz., fruit-piercing moths, defoliators etc generally occur at sub-economic levels, but can become serious pests as a result of changes in cultural practices and litchi cultivars or because of indiscriminate use of insecticides against a key pest. Recently, litchi fruit borer and litchi leaf roller have acquired the status of major pests and now, litchi looper, litchi bug and bag worm are emerging pests of litchi (Choudhary et al., 2013; Singh et al., 2014). Occasional or incidental pests also can cause economic damage only in localized areas at certain times; the great majority of pests reported here fall within this last category.

Indian hot arid zone which is about 12% of total geographical area of the landmass of 0.32 million km² has maximum covering in western Rajasthan i.e. 61% of the total area whereas the other areas in arid region are available in the states of Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka accounting for 20, 5, 4, 7 and 3% of hot arid area whereas the cold arid area of 8.4 million ha lies in the state of Jammu & Kashmir covering the Leh and Ladakh region.

The hot arid area is characterized by frequent droughts of 47% of frequency in the last century of moderate to severe nature. Due to higher occurrence frequency of droughts in this region of state, the livestock assumes great importance as a drought management measure as agriculture is at the mercy of rainfall pattern which is very uncertain in amount as well as distribution coupled with poor soil condition, higher evapotranspiration and higher wind velocity causing the soil erosion.

For arid region of Rajasthanthe general climatic conditions, topographical features and biotic factors do not encourage agricultural operations in the absence of extractive industry the peasantry has to fall upon animal husbandry as their main occupation. Rearing some of the finest breed of cattle, camel, sheep and goats known for their endurance making much use of the meagre feed resources which are grasses ,herbs, shrubs, tree leaves and cultivated feed and fodder crops. Livestock farming has some in built superiority over crop farming as far as growth; stability and resource conservation are concerned. On an average, the region experiences 3 years of drought in every 10 years. The natural forces constituting the soil-climatic complex, which conspire to reduce the crop productivity and cause instability in agricultural production, have much less impact on livestock farming. This is due to differences in the nutritive value of natural vegetation, which mainly sustains livestock.

Traditionally, diagnosing diseases in aquatic animals has involved identifying the infectious agent directly using molecular methods like in situ hybridization or PCR or culture-based methods. Rarely is serological testing used to diagnose f ish. Serological tests have been widely utilized in surveillance programs for terrestrial animals to confirm suspected cases, establish absence of infection or progress toward eradication, estimate infection prevalence, certify individual animals prior to import or export, and show the effectiveness of vaccination.

Both the technology generation system and the technology transfer system play crucial roles in agriculture. For a very long time, research through the National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS), such as the Department of Agriculture Services (DARS), and other research institutions, such as Universities, has produced a vast body of innovations and technological information (Drechsel et al?, 2004). Despite the many promising improvements that researchers have produced, there is still very little application for them (Doss, 2005). A greater knowledge of the mechanisms underlying the distribution and acceptance of agricultural research output is necessary to know the cause of the low levels of technology uptake (Garforth, 1998).

Horticulture, the branch of agriculture that deals with the art, science, technology, and business of cultivating plants, plays a vital role in food security, nutrition, and economic development globally. This diverse sector encompasses a wide array of activities, broadly categorized into:
• Pomology: The cultivation of fruits and nuts.
• Olericulture: The cultivation of vegetables.
• Floriculture: The cultivation of ornamental flowering plants.
• Landscape Horticulture: The design, construction, and maintenance of landscapes.
• Post-harvest Handling: The management of horticultural produce after harvest to maintain quality and reduce losses.
Each of these components is intricately linked with weather conditions, making the horticulture sector highly vulnerable to climate change.

The growing concern over the environmental impact of traditional packaging has led to increased interest in biodegradable and edible packaging solutions. These innovative approaches offer sustainable alternatives to conventional materials like plastic, which can persist in the environment for hundreds of years. Biodegradable packaging decomposes naturally, reducing pollution and landfill waste, while edible packaging provides an additional layer of sustainability by allowing consumers to eat the packaging along with the food) These solutions not only address waste management issues but also respond to changing consumer preferences for environmentally friendly products. This chapter explores the importance of sustainable packaging, the different types of biodegradable and edible materials available, and the challenges and future potential of these eco-friendly options.

Delicious and crunchy apple fruit is one of the most popular fruit favoured by health conscious, fitness freaks who believe in “health is wealth”. It is one of the popular wonderful fruit that contains a long list of essential nutrients that in the true sense are indispensable for human health. The antioxidants in apple have many health promoting and disease prevention properties; thus justifying the adage “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. Apples help in controlling heart diseases, weight loss and cholesterol levels. Apples do not have any cholesterol instead they have fibre which reduces cholesterol by preventing reabsorption and thus are low in calories. Unpeeled apples provide plenty of nutrients which are present just under the skin. Apples are a good source of minerals like potassium, calcium, magnesium and iron, vitamins of B-complex such as riboflavin and pyridoxine (vitamin B6), vitamin C, folic acid and beta carotene. Apart from this they also contain appreciable quantities of tartaric acid that gives tart flavour to them.

Tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa L.) belonging to family Amaryllidaceae is half hardy, perennial, bulbous plant. Bulbs are made of scales and leaf bases and stem remains concealed within scales. The generic name Polianthes is derived from Greek word “polios” meaning shining or white and “anthos” meaning flower, in allusion to the blooms of the common tuberose and species tuberosa, the plant being tuberous in nature. Tuberose is commercially cultivated in tropical and sub tropical areas for cut and loose flower trade and also for the extraction of it’s highly valued natural flower oil.

Contract Farming

Contract farming is defined as a system for the production and supply of agricultural/horticultural produce under forward contracts between producers/suppliers and buyers. The essence of such an arrangement is the commitment of the producer/ seller to provide an agricultural commodity of a certain type, at a time and a price, and in the quantity required by a known and committed buyer.

Contract Farming Ventures in India: A Few Successful Cases

The Government of India’s National Agriculture Policy envisages that “Private sector participation will be promoted through contract farming and land leasing arrangements to allow accelerated technology transfer, capital inflow and assured market for crop production, especially of oilseeds, cotton and horticultural crops”.
Farming is an age-old means of livelihood for millions of Indians. However, there have been few systems/models in which farmers are assured of a market for their

Nutrients are known to influence each and every physiological process within plant system. A considerable amount of various nutrients has been reported to drain off every year with the yield, pruning wood and fallen leaves from the plant and soil system. Therefore, for successful fruit culture, assessment of nutritional status of an orchard assumes significance. The key to mineral nutrition of any orchard is the judicious application of fertilizers on the basis of leaf and soil analysis. The nutrients requirements of fruit trees may vary from crop to crop and includes the soil as well as foliar application of the required major and micro-nutrients. Low level of nutrient results in low yields which are much below the realizable potential. There are a number of reasons why better nutrient management in horticultural crops deserves serious attention. The nutrition management of fruit crops is important:

1. To obtain higher yields and higher returns.
2. To increase the returns from established orchards.
3. To help improving the nutritional standards of the people by providing adequate supply of fruits and vegetables at affordable prices.
4. To provide greater and better quality raw material for fruit and vegetable processing industries, and
5. To help earning foreign exchange through the export of high quality produce in fresh or processed form.

1. Introduction

Libraries have an outstanding role in the advocacy of sustainability and green practices, now that the place of environmental awareness is on the rise. Green libraries provide a commitment, through sustainable architectural practices, efficient systems in energy saving, measures taken with environmental consciousness to preserve resources, and ways to conserve resources in the work they do. The libraries focus on ensuring they provide healthy indoor spaces and educate their communities on sustainability. Admittedly, it is through the adoption of these practices that libraries minimize their ecological footprint and provide a beacon of environmental responsibility. Green libraries are facilities that take ecologically friendly approaches in carrying out operations and programming in activities targeting environmental responsibility. Such libraries try their best to use methods that diminish energy consumption and lower resource use to move closer to sustainability at its core, which may have less of an impact on the environment. Green libraries have focused on recycling, reduction of trash, renewable sources of energy like solar panels, energy efficiency in lighting and space heating, sustainable building materials, and architectural style.

Historical Perspective

Organic Farming was initiated in about 10,000 years back when ancient farmers started cultivation depending on natural sources only. There is a brief mention of several organic inputs in our ancient literature like Rigveda, Ramayana, Mahabharata, Kautilya Arthashastra etc. In fact, organic agriculture has its roots in traditional agricultural practices that evolved in countless villages and farming communities over the millennium.

Organic Movement

The organic movement began in the 1930s and 1940s as a reaction to agriculture’s growing reliance on synthetic fertilizers. Artificial fertilizers had been created during the 18th century, initially with superphosphates and then ammonia derived fertilizers mass-produced using the Haber-Bosch process developed during World War I. These early fertilizers were cheap, powerful, and easy to transport in bulk. The 1940s has been referred to as the ‘pesticide era’. Sir Albert Howard is widely considered to be the father of organic farming. Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian philosopher, made important strides in the earliest organic theory with his biodynamic agriculture. More work was done by J.I. Rodale in the United States, Lady Eve Balfour in the United Kingdom, and many others across the world. As a percentage of total agricultural output, organic farming has remained tiny since its beginning. As environmental awareness and concern increased, the originally supply-driven movement became demand driven. Standardized certification brought premium prices, and in some cases government subsidies attracted many farmers converting into organic farming. In the developing world, many farmers started organic farming according to traditional methods but are not certified. In other cases, farmers in the developing world have converted out of necessity. As a proportion of total global agricultural output, organic output remains small, but it has been growing rapidly in many countries, notably in Europe.

Co-operatives, also known as co-ops, are voluntary associations of individuals who come together to address common needs and aspirations through collectively owned and democratically governed enterprises. Rooted in principles of collaboration, inclusivity, and mutual support, co-operatives play a vital role in various sectors, including agriculture, finance, consumer goods, and social services. Their essence lies in creating a platform where people can pool resources, skills, and efforts to improve their economic, social, and cultural conditions. At the heart of the co-operative philosophy is the belief that by working together, individuals can achieve more than they could on their own. Co-operatives are not driven by profit-maximization but by the desire to meet the needs of their members while fostering a sense of community and empowerment. Whether it's farmers joining forces to access better markets, consumers forming buying clubs to obtain affordable products, or workers creating businesses to share ownership and decision-making, co operatives embody the principle of "people helping people."

Laparoscopy is an operative procedure designed for the visual inspection of peritoneal cavity and biopsy of organs. Laparoscopy is a valuable diagnostic and therapeutic tool in clinical medicine. In the field of cholecystectomy, appendicectomy, vagotomy, hernia repair and adhesion release laparoscopy surgery offers significant advantages over open surgery in humans. For gynecological problems like ovarian cyst or in the case of oophorectomies and hysterectomies, laparoscopic surgery (‘scarless surgery’) is now considered a better alternative in addition to laparoscopic sterilization. Only in the last 15 years laparoscopy is widely used in different animal species for research and clinical diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. The first canine laparoscopy procedures were performed in the early 1900’s (Kelling, 1902). Anderson (1937) used dogs to perfect his skills prior to human clinical trials. The first clinical application of laparoscopy in dog’s involved ovarian function studies in the early 1960’s and Lettow reported the first laparoscopic liver biopsy procedure in a dog in 1972.

The Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change  has confirmed that change in climate system is gradually leaving a strong impact. Observations undoubtedly show that there is increasein global temperatures, wide spread melting of snow and ice, and rising global mean sea level. Global climate has shown warming of 0.89 [0.69 to 1.08] °C over the period 1901–2012 which is mainly attributed to anthropogenic activities. Scientific findings indicate that warming is more pronounced than expected and the impact would be particularly severe in the tropical areas, which mainly consist of developing countries, including India (Shukla, 2016). Thus, climate change is a great challenge which is continuously being faced by the sustainable economic growth of the India. Climate sensitive sectors like agriculture, forestry, hydrology oriented sectors faces major threat due to projected changes in climate. India Meteorological Department (IMD) in 2012 reportedincreasing temperature trends during last 112 years and increase in heavy rainfall events and decrease in low and medium rainfall events over India.
