Introduction

The demand of diversified food has increasing due to health consciousness in the modern civilization. The European communities have gone in search of new foods which contributed mainly to the health diet of population. In this process, animal and avian species have contributed to a large extent in providing the required health foods like milk, meat and eggs. The tendency to go for low calories foods has resulted in increased demand for new species for meat purpose. At present, the ostrich meat ranks highest among health food in Europe. Ostrich meat in terms of health value is credited to less percentage of fat, low cholesterol, less calories, rich in protein and iron. The demand of ostrich meat has been increasing especially after the threat of mad cow diseases. The unique taste of ostrich meat has been added into different meat dishes. This meat has a great demand in restaurant in Europe, Japan, Australia and China in a big way. The popularity of this bird can be judged from the fact that presently 65 countries, including our neighbor Pakistan and China are engaged in ratite farming. The increased demand of ostrich over the past few years has given way to rearing birds under controlled system. The intensive system become popular because of adoption of scientific technologies reduced risk of diseases, through improved bio-security measures, genetic selection and nutritional innovation, health regimes and extensive diseases surveillance. Scientifically proven management practices resulted in low cost production and improvement in quality of ostrich products.

ABSTRACT

It is very important for every library to have all the resources/materials necessary to fulfil its target. The working of a library can be classified into two forms: dealing with the users and behind the scene. There are numerous different sections in a library divided on the basis of their functions. Most important of these is the Acquisition section. A library’s success lies in a well organized acquisition section. Main aim of the library is the contentment of the users. However, collection development is the primary task of the acquisition section which further contributes to user satisfaction itself. It performs the process of selection, procurement and accessioning of reading materials as well as maintains records. It organizes the monetary as well as human resources in such a manner that collection is facilitated more and that too in an economic and less time consuming way. All this is the responsibility of the librarian. Before acquiring the reading materials, the librarian is supposed to decide that which items are actually required in the library and which are to be rejected. A librarian must study the requirements of the library and acquire materials as per the priorities of the institution to achieve its goal.

1.1 Introduction

Python is an interpreter, high level, general purpose programming language developed by Guido Van Rossum and its first version was released in 1991. There are two major Python versions: Python 2 and Python 3. Both are quite different.

Before we start Python programming, we need to have an interpreter to interpret and run our programs.

Windows: There are many interpreters available freely to run Python scripts like IDLE (Integrated Development Environment) that comes bundled with the Python software downloaded from http://python.org/.

Linux: Python comes preinstalled with popular Linux distros such as Ubuntu and Fedora. To check which version of Python you’re running, type “python” in the terminal emulator. The interpreter should start and print the version number.

macOS: Generally, Python 2.7 comes bundled with macOS. You’ll have to manually install Python 3 from http://python.org/.

Introduction

Indian agriculture, including fisheries, is highly monsoon dependent and effect of climate change is immense on its large tracts of rainfed farms. The effects of climate change could be thwarted through better adaptation techniques using all information available with various agencies concerned with agriculture and using advanced analytical tools. Presently, in the country, there is a gap in the capability in capturing, processing and analyzing huge source of information generated in Indian agriculture. This task can be accomplished using Big Data Platform which works in cluster mode and provides the capability of handling huge volume of data, capturing streaming data or real time data and also can accommodate unstructured data. As per FAO, 70 percent in increase in food production in another 30 years is required to overcome the increasing global food demand. It may not be possible to achieve that target due to variety of problems such as reduction in land for cultivation, climate change, and various other factors, such as increasing the fish production etc. Improvement in crop genetics, application of fertilizer in higher dosages, irrigation facilities, etc. may not be possible in future. We need to create a big data platform involving important parameters on crop production viz., soil, soil temperature, water requirements, and relative humidity, pests and diseases, and micro and macro nutrients in temporal and spatial. Now, since available data is properly utilized for making valid analytics by the farming community due to certain issues. Even the data created is incompatible, data available from various sources is also not compatible among themselves due to which decision making is also a big challenge. Due to the incompatibility of agricultural data from different sources, farmers do not have the accessibility to vast pool of available information for making effective, efficient and timely decisions.

Big Data in Agriculture (including fisheries)

Big data, an emerging data driven system helps in precision agriculture based on data collected. This helps farmers in making efficient decisions on sowing, planting, fertilizing and various other farm operations including

harvesting crops at the appropriate time. Of late, sensors are placed in the fields to collect data on related parameters viz., soil temperature and moisture relative humidity, wind speed, weather, etc. which help in crop growth. Images obtained using satellites are helpful in monitoring the crop growth during crop period. Agro-produce includes not only yields obtained from crops but also include produce from horticulture, livestock, fisheries, and other systems also. Agriculture is dependent on various parameters such as climate, seed, soil cultivation practices, agronomic practices, irrigation requirement, fertilizers pesticides, weeds, harvesting, post harvesting techniques, etc. Data collected on all these parameters would help in estimation of yield and other relevant parameters. Governments, Universities, Research departments, Agro-business and Agri-input companies generate, maintain and use voluminous data related to various farm management practices and other related issues say insurance marketing, supply chain, packaging, distribution, etc. This voluminous and wide variety of data poses several challenges for making effective decisions. Information on various fish related parameters can be collected from the stakeholders and a big data platform can be developed for effective decision making.

Ultrasonography in goat is becoming popular in the field of reproduction and replacing the other old-age techniques, viz. abdominal ballotment, recto- abdominal probes, X-rays and radioimmuno-assays. The reasons are numerous such as unsatisfactory results, hazardous effects to animal, operator or environment, high cost, long delay in diagnostic results and requirement of sophisticated labs. The ultrasound system has low operating cost and does not need special labs as it can be done at farm itself. Ultrasonography is considered safe to the animal and the operator and provides quick and reliable results. The popular opinion about ultrasonography is that it is noninvasive imaging system and is rapid, safe and practical means of diagnosis of pregnancy and reproductive disorders in sheep and goat. The B-mode real time ultrasonographic system particularly portable system is popular among researcher and practitioners. In goat, B-mode real time ultrasonography was used in 1971, using 5 MHz frequency transducer. A transducer of switchable frequency from 7.5 to 5.0 is more popular in small ruminant research and practice.

Fruits contribute to nutritional security and thus are an important part of food system. To meet the future demand, development of varieties with improved yield and quality is the focus of researchers involved in fruit breeding. Though conventional breeding has resulted in the development of improved commercial varieties of different fruit crops, however conventional breeding is time consuming and faces several challenges due to long juvenile phase, highly heterozygous nature of most of the fruit crops. Challenges like changing climate, consumer preference, socio-economic conditions like reduced availability of land, labour and increasing cost of inputs, require fast and efficient methods to develop the varieties to meet the demands, which is not feasible with conventional breeding. Marker assisted breeding has given impetus to breeding efforts in several fruit crops, however it’s use is limited only for the traits controlled by a few major QTLs.
During last few years, enormous genomic resources have been developed for fruit crops using next generation sequencing technology. Such advances in genomic research in many fruit crops have paved the way for precision breeding using genomic assisted breeding (GAB) tools. GAB has helped in characterisation and utilisation of genome resources and using allele variation for cultivar development (Varshney et al. 2021). Advances in sequencing technology and affordability has allowed the genome wide analysis (GWAS) on diversity panels of different fruits resulting in identification of allelic variation associated with the traits of interest. Also, identification of superior alleles of candidate genes makes them amenable to genome editing based precision breeding. Genome wide genotyping and phenotyping offers tools for developing strategy for genomic selection (GS). Genomic selection relies on the prediction of breeding values of tested genotypes based on the large number of markers spread over entire genome. These tools promise to further improve breeding efficiency in fruit crops.

Abstract
Infectious diseases pose significant threats to global aquaculture, causing substantial economic losses exacerbated by intensive farming practices. RNA viruses, including birnavirus, nodavirus, rhabdovirus, and others, infect both wild and cultured fish, leading to severe mortalities. This study focused on detecting two RNA viruses, Infectious Hematopoietic Necrosis Virus (IHNV) and Spring Viremia of Carp Virus (SVCV), using the TRIZOL reagent method. Fish samples, including Tilapia, Mrigal, Catla, and Minor carp, were observed for clinical symptoms and dissected to collect organs like kidney and spleen. RNA extraction was performed using TRIZOL, followed by cDNA synthesis and PCR amplification targeting specific viral genes. Gel electrophoresis confirmed the absence of IHNV and SVCV in all samples tested. This comprehensive methodology ensures efficient surveillance and early detection of viral infections in aquaculture, thereby enhancing disease management strategies and economic sustainability. The findings indicate a current absence of IHNV and SVCV in the studied fish populations, emphasizing the importance of ongoing monitoring to safeguard aquatic health.

Ixora is an evergreen flowering shrub valued for its attractive clusters of brightly coloured flowers and its suitability for loose flower production, religious offerings, garlands and landscaping. The crop performs well under tropical and subtropical conditions and is appreciated for its extended flowering period. This chapter presents the botanical characteristics, origin, distribution, genetics and important varieties of Ixora. It discusses suitable climate and soil conditions, propagation, land preparation, planting, nutrient management, irrigation and cultural practices. Special attention is given to pruning and canopy management for improving flowering. The chapter also covers important insect pests and diseases, harvesting, postharvest handling and yield, providing practical guidance for commercial Ixora production.

Whenever we design a scientific study it is designed in a specific contextual background to solve one or another scientific problem. Subsequently it also involves a set of variables/phenomenon operating in a particular context, set of relationships among these variables and the conditions under which they operate. Certainly, to address an unsolved scientific problem we need to carry out research by employing well defined research methodology and have an idea about possible outcomes.  For example when a extension scientist is asked to study the impact of a novel programme, he needs to understand the background and the context under which the programme was introduced, what are the developmental inputs given under the programme, to whom, when (variables), with what purpose (context), what kind of impact he/she is supposed to investigate (presumed relationship), what methods he is going to use to investigate the impact of developmental programme (research methodology) and what are the possible outcomes of the investigation and how programme interventions are related to the outcome (relationship).

ABSTRACT

Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were used for characterizing eleven banana (Musa AAB Plantain Subgroup) clones using 40 decamer primers. Eight primers, which produced reproducible banding patterns, yielded 42 scorable bands with an average of 5.25 bands per primer. The amplification products ranged in size from 400 to 1500 bp. A genetic similarity matrix was constructed using the Jaccard’s coeffecient method. The pair wise similarity coefficient values varied between 0.3333 and 0.9355. Based on the coefficients, distances between the clones were computed using SYSTAT software package. In the dendrogram constructed by the nearest neighbour (single- link) method (Krzanowski, 1988), all the eleven clones were found grouped under five clusters. Attu Nendran, Changanasseri Nendran, Changazhikodan, Kaliethan, Koonoor Ethan and Quintal Banana formed the largest cluster. Manjeri Nendran and Myndoli formed the second cluster. Padalamurian, Mysore Ethan and Zanzibar formed three separate clusters. Zanzibar, belonging to the Horn Plantain group was different from the rest of the clones.

In transcription, it has become clear as to how there is the transfer of genetic information stored in the sequence of nucleotides-pairs in DNA to the sequence of nucleotides in m-RNA molecules which carry that particular information from the nucleus to the sites of protein synthesis (ribosomes) in the cytoplasm. Further, there is the requirement of the process by which genetic information stored in the sequences of nucleotides in m-RNAs is used to specify the sequences of amino acids in the polypeptide gene products. This process known as translation takes place in the cytoplasm on complex workbenches called as ribosomes. With exception of water, proteins are by far the most prevalent component of living organisms in terms of total mass.

Proteins (= enzymes = genes) are composed of polypeptides and every polypeptide is encoded by a gene. Each polypeptide has a long sequence of amino acids linked together by covalent bonds. There are 20 different amino acids (glycine, alanine, valine, leucine, isoleucine, proline, phenylalanine, methionine, tryptophan, cysteine, serine, threonine, tyrosine, asparagine, glutamine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, lysine, arginine, and histidine) present in most proteins. Guinea fowl has been domesticated in the recent past as a meat producing birds. Guinea fowl species are found across sub Saharan Africa. Guinea fowls found fairly in large numbers in wild type. Guinea fowl is from the family Numididae in the order Galliformes. They are endemic to Africa and rank among the oldest of the gallinaceous birds. Guinea fowls are hardy, sociable in habit, move in flock and thrive well in tropical as well as in temperate climates. They survive well even under the subsistence agriculture through scavenging. Guinea fowls are resistant to some of the diseases which may fatal to chicken. Guinea fowl meat is tender but slightly darker than that of chicken. Its special gamey flavor makes it a special table delicacy. Guinea fowl meat is drier and leaner than chicken meat and has a gamy flavor. They have marginally more protein than chicken or turkey roughly half the fat of chicken and slightly fewer calories per gram. Their eggs are substantially richer than those of chicken.

Guinea fowl are the insect and seed eating, ground nesting birds with featherless head. Under natural condition, they are monogamous in nature. Wild guinea fowl are strong flyer. Their breast muscle are dark, enabling them to sustain themselves in flight for considerable distances if hard situation. Guinea fowl hens are not known for good mother, but in the wild the guinea fowl cock may help the young keets during the day by keeping them worm and finding feed. Sometime more than one cock will help to raise the young.

Quantitative traits are polygenic meaning they are controlled by many genes and gene interactions. Examples: height, weight, length etc.

Qualitative character

Qualitative traits are under the controlled of one or few genes, also called oligogeneic traits. For example, black or red coat color, horned or polled, coat color dilution, leaf color are all qualitative traits.

Agriculture is the main sector of the Odisha economy and contributes approximately 42% to the gross domestic product (GDP) and employs over 80% of the population. Despite its role, agricultural production is constrained by high climate variability where rainfall distribution is extremely uneven and this has negative implications for the livelihoods of people .Drought frequently results in crop failure, while high rainfall intensities result in low infiltration and high runoff causing enhanced soil erosion and land degradation. Land degradation in the form of soil erosion and declining land fertility is a serious challenge to agricultural productivity and economic growth (Lemenih, 2004).Studies indicate that the tribal district of Odisha have experienced high rates of soil erosion and deforestation, resulting in sediment accumulation in downstream reservoirs and rivers.

Introduction

Acute lung injury (ALI) is the manifestation of an inflammatory response of lung resulting from severe sepsis, bacterial or viral pneumonia, trauma, and burns in animals (Ali et al., 2020).It is distinguwashed by disruption to the alveolar capillary membranes, atelectasis of the pulmonary airspaces, and neutrophil and protein-rich fluid infiltration into the alveolar space (Li et al., 2019). Although advances in treatment, the disability and fatality rates of ALI remain high, that is around 30-40% (Ali et al., 2020). At the moment, new therapeutic alternatives are urgently required to treat ALI. As a result, this is a very active area of research to understand the molecular principles underlying pulmonary inflammation and ALI (Reiss et al., 2012). The use of animal models of inflammatory lung has allowed for the probing of pathways of inflammation responsible for injury. Specially, rodent models may serve a link between in vitro research to large animals and clinical studies by allowing for high quantities of samples under physiological circumstances at low expenses (Domscheit et al., 2020).LPS, found in the outer membrane of gram-negative bacteria, consists of a polar lipid head group (lipid A) and a chain of repeating disaccharides (Gao et al., 2023). LPS induced lung injury model, closely mimic sepsis and inflammatory lung diseases, is a well-establwashed model in this field of research (Reiss et al., 2012). To mimic acute lung injury, LPS can be administered either directly through intratracheal or intranasal route (direct pulmonary insult) or indirectly through intraperitoneally and intravenous routes (indirect extra pulmonary insult) (Perl et al., 2011). This chapter focuses mostly on rodent model of acute lung injury caused by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), both direct and indirect. Additionally, it also includes the characteristics and underlying molecular mechanism of LPS induced lung injury along with applications in drug development.

West Bengal, particularly Kolkata, emerges as a pivotal hub within India, generating 90% of the state’s ornamental fish revenue, primarily driven by local communities across suburban areas. This chapter explores the landscape of ornamental fisheries in Kolkata, detailing its economic significance with insights into market dynamics, from collection to export. Despite its economic contributions, the sector faces market informality, technical deficiencies in breeding practices, and occasional regulatory setbacks impacting sales. For instance, regulatory changes in 2017 temporarily disrupted market stability, highlighting vulnerabilities within the industry. Looking ahead, the chapter discusses strategic pathways for growth and sustainability. Government initiatives, including financial support and technological advancements under schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, offer promising avenues for enhancing production capabilities and market integration. Moreover, stakeholder collaborative efforts to streamline distribution and pricing could bolster profitability and market resilience. In conclusion, while ornamental fisheries in Kolkata confront multifaceted challenges, proactive government interventions and industry collaboration are crucial to unlocking its full potential. The sector can foster sustainable growth by addressing existing barriers and leveraging emerging opportunities, enriching local livelihoods and global aquariculture enthusiasts.

Introduction

Use of FYM, crop residues, leaf fall, root deposition etc. has been part and parcel in agriculture. These material undergoes microbial decay over the time slowly and the major portion of it finds way back to the atmosphere. Not only that, residue burning traditionally provides a fast way to clear the agricultural field of residual biomass, facilitating further land preparation and planting. However, in addition to the loss of valuable biomass and nutrients, biomass burning leads to release of toxic gases including GHGs.

Full thickness burn wound will not heal spontaneously which need early excision and adequate coverage to prevent fluid loss and risk of infection. Major portion of the skin is lost during burn injury which is the active layer for protecting the entry of micro organism from outside environment. So far, meshed autologous skin graft is regarded as the gold standard for treating extensive full thickness burns. However, their frequent use may be hampered by several impediments such as limited availability, donor site morbidity, associated with additional scarring. Severe burn patients invariably lack additional skin donor site. Moreover, creation of donor site in burned patient is equivalent to second degree burn and which further increase the total body surface area affected (TBSA). In past decades, numerous biomaterials have been investigated for the use as a dermal skin substitute for burn patients but none give promising results. The innovative tissue engineered bioactive materials offer potential tissue regeneration and prevent the tissue deterioration.

The extracellular matrix (ECM) derived naturally from mammalian tissue have been successfully used as scaffold for tissue reconstruction and wound management in clinical applications. ECM can be derived from various tissue or organs of different species but most commonly, porcine small intestinal submucosa and urinary bladder have been successfully used as scaffold for reconstruction. ECM is obtained by process of decellularization that involves the use of various ionic and non ionic detergents, acids, enzymatic solutions and mechanical/physical methods.
