The notion of transcending technologies refers to the development and deployment of innovative solutions that go beyond the limitations of current agricultural practices and technologies. This involves harnessing the potential of cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, the Internet of Things (IoT), and biotechnology to create more efficient, sustainable, and resilient food systems. By leveraging these technologies, it is possible to optimize crop yields, reduce waste, improve resource allocation, and enhance the overall sustainability of agricultural practices. However, the concept of transcending technologies is not solely focused on the development of new technologies. Rather, it emphasizes the need for a holistic and integrated approach to food production, processing, and distribution. This involves recognizing the intricate relationships between food systems, ecosystems, and human societies, and working to create a more equitable, just, and sustainable food culture. The goal of achieving food for all is closely tied to the concept of transcending technologies. Despite the fact that the world produces enough food to feed every person, millions of people around the globe continue to suffer from hunger and malnutrition. This is a stark reminder that the challenge of feeding the world’s population is not simply a matter of producing more food, but also of ensuring that everyone has access to nutritious and sustainable food. In order to achieve this goal, it is essential to address the complex web of factors that contribute to food insecurity, including poverty, inequality, conflict, and environmental degradation. This requires a multifaceted approach that involves governments, international organizations, civil society, and the private sector working together to create a more just and equitable food system. The productivity of onion is closely associated with the availability of genetically pure, healthy and high-germinating seed. Farmers often face shortages of certified seed, rapid loss of seed viability and inconsistent quality within informal supply systems. Onion seed production is technically demanding because the crop is biennial, highly cross-pollinated and sensitive to environmental conditions. This chapter discusses floral biology, climatic requirements, selection of true-to-type bulbs, isolation, seed-to-seed and bulb-to-seed production methods, pollination, harvesting, processing, testing and storage. It emphasizes quality enhancement, organized seed systems and participation of trained growers and private agencies in expanding reliable seed availability and improving economic returns.

6.1 PROCESSES IN THE DOMESTICATION TECHNOLOGY

6.1.1 Introduction

In this programme trees that ensure security in food nutrition income, health, shelter and energy and a regenerated environment are domesticated. The mission of this is to increase; diversify and stabilize income, food and health strategies from practicing agroforestry approaches in general domesticating indigenous trees and their products particular.

Definition of Agroforestry

Basically agro forestry is the integration of agriculture forestry and sometimes animal production. This is a measure to maintain soil fertility, stop desertification and soil degradation. Foresters and agriculturalist have long recognized the important of these approached which have been incorporated into forestry law of severe countries. This does not only involve the planting of certain trees in farms but also the protection of certain trees species which are not to be felled or damaged during farming.

India is a leading vegetable producing country in the world. Presently it occupies 7.981 million hectare area with the annual production 129.077million tones (2008-09). The country being belessed with the unique gift of nature of diverse climate and distinct seasons, make it possible to grow an array of vegetables number exceeding more than hundred types. However, potato being the staple food and easy to mix in several preparations ranks first (26.6%) in total production of vetetables followed by onion (10.5%) and other important Solanaceous vegetables like tomato (8.6%), brinjal (8.0%). Cauliflower and cabbage are most preferred winter vegetables and their total share in the country’s vegetable production is 5.1 and 5.3%, respectively. Other important vegetables, which are primarily grown in the country, are okra, onion, vegetable peas and a good range of cucurbits (Fig. 1)

There is miss-match in area production and productivity of vegetables among various states of the country. The West Bengal ranks first in the total production of vegetables in the country and its production during the year 2008-09 was in tune of more than 22.704 million tones, contributing the more than one-fifth of total country’s vegetable product ion. Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Orissa in north India and Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Karanataka in south India are the other leading vegetable producing states in the country. In last one decade, there has been considerable progress in enchancing the productivity of vegetables which is presently 16.2 tonnes hectare^-1. Incessant growth of urbanization, ceaseless fragmentation ofland holdings and depleting natural resources are the major challenges before the expansion of any agricultural commodity either cereals or vegetables. Hence, our attention must be focused on vertical expansion strengthened with the boon ofthe technology instead of horizontal expansion just by increasing the crop area. To ensure the nutrition security of the burgeoning population of the country, it is estimated that up to 2020, the country’s vegetable demand would be around 155 million tones (Rai et al., 2004; Pandey et al., 2009). To achieve this target, it is sine qua non to integrate the various technologies right from production to post-harvest.

6.1 Introduction

Energy planning is possible only with knowledge of past and present energy consumption and future energy demand. There are number of factor which affects the energy consumption pattern significantly. These include energy prices, availability, reliability of supply, uniformity of quality, convenience in use, technical and economic characteristics of energy using equipment & appliances, population growth, income rate of urbanization, educational status, social acceptance, social habit, present knowledge of beneficiary etc.

The energy planning differ in planning sectral wise and planning sources wise. For sector planning purposes, estimates are needed of the short and long run price elasticity for every specific energy resource. Where as in planning sources wise, one must consider its long term availability & its costs.

In general, to cope up future risk and uncertainty, we need to predict the future event. The likely future event has to be given from and content in terms of projected course of variables i.e. the forecasting. Projection is of two types – forward & backward. It is the forward projection of data variable, which is named as forecasting.

Introduction

The phytohormone abascisic acid (ABA) was discovered in connection to studies related to shedding of fruits and leaves, also called abscission, and the dormancy of buds. It was first identified and characterized by Frederick Addicott and his associates in 1963 while studying the compounds responsible for the abscission of cotton fruits. Inhibition of growth and maintenance of the dormancy of buds are the most important visible effects of ABA. The concentration of ABA does not remain constant as its concentration decreases in the buds significantly after sprouting and rises during seed and fruit production. Its concentration in dormant seeds is very high and considered as an efficient inhibitor of germination. The role ABA plays during the abscission of fruits and leaves is not clearly understood as its effect is very clear in case of fruit abscission where as it is not very clear on the abscission of leaves. However, the regulatory effect of ABA on the water balance is established in plants. It also induces stomatal closure to inhibit further loss of water. Being a growth inhibitor, ABA also reverses the effect of growth-stimulating hormones like auxin, gibberellins and cytokinin in different tissues of a plant. One of the main goals of phytohormonal ecology is to study the interactions between biotic and abiotic stress at hierarchical levels of biological organization.

Protected cultivation of horticultural crops offers the best choice for diversification from traditional agriculture production system for a number of reasons. Production of crops under protected structures has great potential in augmenting production and quality of vegetables, flowers and in some fruit crops in main and off-season and maximizing water and nutrient use efficiency under varied agro-climatic conditions of the country. This becomes relevant to growers in India who have small land holding. They would be interested in a technology, which helps them to produce more crops each year from their land, particularly during off-season when prices are higher. The commonly protected structures are polyhouses, poly-tunnels, floating row covers, clotches, shade-net, insect-proof net and plastic-mulches (Chandra et al., 2000 ; Singh et al. 2010). These protected structures act as physical barrier and play a key role in integrated pest management by preventing spread of insect-pests and viruses which causes severe damage to the crop (Singh et al., 2003). This technology has great potential especially in periurban agriculture in near future, since it can be profitably used for growing high value vegetable crops like tomato, cheery-tomato, coloured peppers, parthenocarpic cucumbers, cut-flowers like rose, carnation, Berbera, lilium and fruits like strawberry, grapes etc. and for off-season cultivation of vegetables and their healthy and virus-free seedling production.

Protected cultivation is intended to mean some level of control over plant micro-climate to alleviate one or more of abiotic stresses for optimum plant growth. The microclimatic parameters being referred here are temperature, light, air-composition and the nature of rooting medium.

Agricultural meteorology, a discipline that has traditionally focused on understanding the relationships between weather and climate, and agricultural productivity, is at a critical juncture. The increasing vulnerability of agricultural systems to climate change, coupled with the need for sustainable and resilient agricultural practices, necessitates a fundamental transformation of agricultural meteorology. To support the development and implementation of climate resilient agriculture (CRA) practices, agricultural meteorology must be reoriented as a super speciality discipline. This requires a comprehensive overhaul of the discipline, including its curriculum, research focus, and practice. The reorientation of agricultural meteorology as a super speciality discipline is essential to provide the necessary expertise and knowledge to support CRA practices. This includes developing and applying cutting-edge technologies, such as precision agriculture, remote sensing, and machine learning, to support agricultural decision-making. However, the current state of agricultural meteorology is not equipped to meet the demands of CRA. The discipline faces several challenges, including a lack of interdisciplinary approaches, inadequate emphasis on practical skills, and limited focus on climate change and sustainability (Fig. 8.1). To address these challenges, essential reforms are necessary to reorient agricultural meteorology as a super speciality discipline. This chapter will discuss the essential reforms required to transform agricultural meteorology, including reforms in curriculum, research, practice, and policy. By implementing these

Preamble

In India, agriculture plays an important role as it accounts for about 18% of the GDP and supports nearly 58% of the total working population for employment. Food grain production increased significantly from a low level of 50 million Tons during 1950-51 to a record of 230.7 million Tons in 2007-08. The demand for food is growing rapidly due to increasing population and rising income levels, hence we need to produce about 320 million Tons of foodgrains by the year 2025. It implies more pressure on our exhisting land, soil and water resources which are already in short supply, degraded, fragile and this similar situation is being faced by mainly developing countries today. Plant parasitic nematodes are of great economic significance. Since most of them live in the soil hence represent one of the most difficult pest problems in terms of identification, demonstration and management.

Introduction

Indian agriculture is in a phase of transition from subsistence to high-tech agribusiness. This has ushered in an era where entrepreneurship is viewed as a strategic intervention in rural development. As a result, promotion of rural enterprises has gained great significance as an instrument for improved farm earnings, employment and women empowerment. It implies development of agriculture through farm diversification, value addition and development of agro-processing industries that provides autonomy, independence and reduced need for social support to the farmers. Improved farm-industry linkages along with great export potential will be added advantages. In this development scenario, agriculture, specifically high value horticultural crops like fruits, vegetables, spices, flowers, plantation crops, medicinal and aromatic plants among others that ensure maximum returns to the growers with multiple scopes for value addition hold great promise. In fact, horticultural crops become a necessary condition for improving the living standards of farmers and ensuring nutritional security of the nation. The concept of nutritional security goes beyond food security to include adequate availability of micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals in addition to calorie and protein needs of the people supplied through food grains. Therefore, the spectacular increase in food grain production and a reasonable overall agricultural performance has failed to eradicate malnutrition as can be inferred from Table 1. It indicates that the Global Hunger Index (GHI), a more comprehensive tool used to measure and track hunger, ranks India (97 out of 118 developing countries) in the category of serious hunger behind Bangladesh (90/118). More disturbing are the rates of growing malnutrition among Indian households. As such, nutritional security becomes a more relevant indicator of food security as we move up the development ladder

A metabolic cell contains about 75-95% water by weight. It is important for plants for proper growth and development. Any significant reduction in availability will affects metabolic activity and thus growth parameters which determine yield. The uptake of water by the plant (roots) from the soil is an osmotic phenomenon. The water potential represents the free energy per moles of water. It can be reduced by:

8.1.1 Introduction
Biosafety Risk Assessment is a systematic, science-based process used to identify, evaluate, and mitigate risks associated with handling biological agents, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and biotechnological products. It is central to ensuring human safety, environmental integrity, and regulatory compliance in both laboratory and field applications.
A well-conducted biosafety risk assessment enables institutions to establish appropriate biosafety levels, implement containment measures, and ensure sustainable and responsible use of biotechnological advancements.
8.1.2 Key Objectives of Biosafety Risk Assessment
• Prevent exposure of personnel to biohazards.
• Avoid environmental contamination and unintended gene flow.
• Determine containment requirements for biological agents.
• Guide institutional and national biosafety decision-making.
• Support regulatory frameworks and compliance obligations.

This chapter introduces orchids as one of the most diverse and economically important groups of ornamental plants. It examines their origin, distribution, genetics, botanical characteristics and classification into terrestrial, epiphytic, monopodial and sympodial types. Commercially important genera such as Dendrobium, Cymbidium, Phalaenopsis, Vanda, Arachnis and others are discussed. The chapter also covers propagation, micropropagation, greenhouse management, nutrition, pests, diseases, harvesting, postharvest management and conservation, including the importance of CITES regulations.

7.1 Introduction

Cherry is one of the important temperate stone fruits of the world. It is widely grown in the cooler climates where the span of winter is wide and very much pronounced. Sweet cherry is tall, attaining a height of 18 m, and pyramidal form. The branches are usually erect, and leaves are large, thin, variable pubescent beneath and coarsely serrated. Sweet (Prunus avium L.) and sour (P. cerasus L.) cherry ripen first among stone fruits followed by apricot, peach and plum. Sweet cherry comes first on the fresh market; hence, it is in high demand during late spring and early summer. Sweet cherry cultivars with red fruit colour lead the market while cultivars of yellow, white, or blush colour are in less demand. Sour cherries have smaller fruit size and are less firm than sweet cherries. The vast majority of the sour cherries are processed. The tree of sour cherry is usually 6-9 m tall, open headed, round topped or spreading and often without a central leader. The leaves are much smaller, dark green in colour and more numerous and trees are hardier than those of sweet cherry. Diameter of sour cherry fruit is about 2 cm.

The agriculture scenario has evolved considerably over the years. In the present context, consumers need diverse, safe and nutritious food which calls for a major reorganisation of the agricultural value chains to support transformation from the traditional production-oriented supply chains to demand-based approaches. Trade liberalization has further intensified competition by exposing farmers to both domestic and international markets, compelling them to meet elevated standards in terms of product quality and pricing. Therefore, the primary focus should be on enhancing technical expertise, managerial capabilities and access to timely information to enable smallholder farmers not only to strengthen their livelihoods but also enhance their marketing skills amid the fast-evolving global economic landscape. Access to true information is equally essential for addressing growing challenges related to natural resource degradation and climate change. Extension in Indian context, play a vital role in bridging the knowledge gap between research institutions and farmers by providing a range of advisory amenities and facilitate expertise application, transmission and management in the farmer’s fields. Perhaps, agricultural extension is the only service at the ground-level that can provide essential knowledge, guidance, information as well as assistance to the farmers and the stakeholders. There has been extensive range of transformation and inventiveness in agricultural extension services in India; however, the exposure and access to information which were disseminated to marginal and underprivileged farmers are uneven and patchy. Likewise, in real situation a huge gap existed between the technology developed/released and the technology disseminated/adopted. A study by NSSO (National Sample Survey Organisation), 2014, highlighted that the almost 59 per cent of the farm families refrained from any assistance from either government or private extension services. In the country, 40.6 per cent households received extension assistance while, only 11 per cent of the services came from physical government machineries. At present hardly onethird of the technology developed at the research organizations has reached the farming community and the statistics of adoption/application of such technology at field level is even less than that. Practical application of many of our recommended agricultural technologies in the field is very much difficult either because of the complex nature of the technology or inputs so prescribed are not readily available in nearby areas. Moreover, most of the extension machineries tend to work in isolation from each other.
