Introduction

Genetic engineering is the process of using molecular techniques to add, modify and delete genes of interest to the DNA strands of recipient cells or recipient plants. Genetic engineering is also called genetic technology, transgenic technology, transformation technology and recombinant DNA technology. Genetic engineering consists of tools and techniques used to study, identify, or modify the genes of living organisms. It is also defined as a technique for developing transgenic organisms. The key points of genetic engineering are briefly listed below.

14.1 Introduction

Hazelnut is also known as Cob nut or Filbert nut. In its natural form the hazelnut is a deciduous, monoecious, multi-stemmed bush, but commercially should be grown as a single trunk tree. Tree sizes are up to 6 m tall in the commercial state. The term ‘Hazel’ was derived from Anglo-Saxon word ‘Haesel’ meaning bonnet, whereas ‘Corylus’ was derived from Greek word ‘Korys’ meaning Hood or helmet. There are nine widely recognized species. five of those are shrubs: C. avellana, C americana, C. cornuta, C. heterophylla, and C. sieboldiana, and four are trees: C.columa, C. jacquemontii, C. chinensis, and C. ferox (Thompson et al., 1996). The nuts of C. avellana are large with superior quality; this species is less hardy and used in breeding programs either exclusively or combination with other species (Thompson et al., 1996). Hazelnuts are deciduous trees or shrubs, grown for their edible nuts. Hazelnuts are large multi-stemmed shrubs or small trees with rounded leaves which possess a doubly serrated margin (each tooth bears another tooth). Hazelnut can reach a height of 3–8 m (10–26 ft) and can live for many years, although its commercial life span is usually about 40 years.

Introduction

Cell culture is a technique that involves the isolation and in vitro maintenance of cells isolated from tissues or whole organs derived from animals, microbes or plants. This technique has immeasurable role in the field of biology. The scientific progress in biology, microbiology and biotechnology in recent years can be credited on the development of cell culture technology. With the development of cell culture the isolation of viruses has become less cumbersome, the assessment of the efficacy and toxicity of new drugs has been easier, new vaccines are being developed and there has been development in biotechnology assisted reproductive technology.

In general, animal cells have more complex nutritional requirements and usually need more stringent conditions for growth and maintenance. For the growth of the cell in vitro specific mediums are required by the cells. Previously natural mediums like plasma ,serums were used but with the advent of synthetic media the specific needs of different cell types can be catered with. Cell culture is governed by a provided set of protocols requiring a sterile pure culture of cells, various nutrients for its growth, sterile cell culture hood, appropriate aseptic techniques and the utilisation of suitable conditions for optimal viable growth of cells.

INTRODUCTION

The metabolism of carbohydrates is vital for plant growth and development, and to the yield of major plant products such as starch and sucrose. Starch, sucrose and fructose are the three important carbohydrates which are utilized in most of the higher plants. The majority of sucrose that is synthesized in higher plants during photosynthesis is exported to non-photosynthetic cells (ap Rees, 1992). Starch serves as an important storage for carbohydrate residues. The degradation (breakdown) of starch ensures retaining of important life processes in plants when there is carbon shortage, for instance, during night period in leaves or in resting organs such as potato tubers.

15.1 Introduction

The genus Castanea, (chestnuts and chinkapins), belongs to the family Fagaceae, which includes other important timber producing genera such as Quercus and Fagus. The chestnuts are native of Western Asia, Europe and Northern America. Chinese chestnut (Castanea mollissima) is a native of China, Japanese chestnut (Castanea crenata) is native of Japan and South Korea and European chestnut is native of Mediterranean countries of South Europe and Asia miner (Conedera et al., 2004; Davis et al., 2006). The Chinese chestnut (Castanea mollissima), Japanese chestnut (Castanea crenata), American chestnut (Castanea dentata), and European chestnut (Castanea sativa) are widely cultivated owing to the economic relevance for their fruits (Larue et al., 2021 and Song et al., 2021). Interspecific hybrids which have emerged from disease resistance work are used for nut, timber and as rootstock.

My paper does not provide any prescription but provides illustration of my experiences only, which may be of some use in knowledge and practice of food. Maturity at harvest is the most important determinant of storage life and final fruit quality. Maturity indices are determined for many fruit, vegetable and floral crops. Harvesting crops at proper maturity allows handlers to begin their work with the best possible quality produce. Produce harvested too early may lack flavour and may not ripen properly, while produce harvested too late may be fibrous or over ripe.
 
Almost all fruits reach their best eating quality when allowed to ripen on the tree or plant (exceptions e.g., pears, avocados, and bananas). In general, fruits become sweeter, more colourful, and softer as they mature. A few fruits are usually picked mature but unripe so that they withstand post harvest handling system when shipped long distances.  Most of  currently used maturity evaluation is based on a compromise between those methods that would ensure the best eating quality and those that provide flexibility in transportation and marketing.  Optimum harvesting stage depends upon type of fruit or vegetable and their final use. Such a division is usually based on their classification according to physiology, environmental conditions, ripening bahaviour and nutritional aspect. Some of the classifications, important for their harvesting and storage are briefed in  subsequent sections.

Abstract

Indian is rich biodiversity and availability of a variety plants of enhances the interest of scientist for the possible use of plant products as natural herbicides. The emphasis should be to collect the information about such plants from the concerned people who have traditional knowledge about the use of these herbs and then to study scientifically to arrive at conclusions. The study of compounds produced by a plant which inhibit or stimulate the germination and the development of other plants is important for understanding the mechanisms of the ecologicalinteraction. Therefore, there is continuing need to develop and release new phytotoxic chemicals that preserve the environment and enable a more efficient control of weeds, improving crop yield and quality. Ageratum conyzoides a herb traditionally used for treatment of many diseases, releases some potential allelochemicals and other chemicals to the environment which inhibit the germination and growth of neighboring plants. A complete study of its potential allelochemicals may be useful in biological control for sustainable agriculture.

3. Effective use of bye-products/wastes of one component for the benefit of other component/components

Chemotherapy in Parasitology deals with the treatment of disease caused by different parasites by specific drugs; meanwhile particular drug has got the particular action against the particular parasite. Recently chemotherapy is a extensively used and emerging branch for the control of different stages of parasites that is normally not killed by the conventional methods of treatment. Thus, chemotherapy plays an important role in the treatment and control of parasitic infections by avoiding the outcome of the danger of the disease by treatment of the affected animals. They should have the maximum parasitotrophic action and minimum organotrophic action. It is mainly divided into two types: 1) Rational therapy: It is a mode of treatment based on the pharmacological actions of drugs with relation to disease. 2) Supportive therapy: It is a method of treatment other than drugs, e.g. giving high protein diet in the oedematous condition such as bottle jaw in fascioliosis and amphistomiosis. The drugs used for the killing or complete removal of the parasites from the body of the host called antiparasitic drugs.

A. Rectangular Canals

5.1 Design of Best Rectangular Canals

After the Mehboob and Trapezoidal canals, next best section is rectangle. This section is also generally adopted for small discharges say upto 10 cumecs (350 cusecs). This section ranks at No. 4. Yet, this is the only section most commonly adopted for flumes of discharges upto140 cumecs (5000 cusecs). Typical example is Orsang acqueduct, 1 km. long for 1140 cumecs (40000 cusecs) in ractangular sections on Narmada Canal Project, Gujrat, India, built in the years from 1990 – 2000. Such sections are common in power house canals due to limitation of space and very sharp curves. It is free from the effect of change of side slopes as in the trapezoidal canals (see para 3.3) Still some small side slope (batter) is adopted in thick masonry / concrete lining. It adds to structural stability with economy in thickness of wall and as well as hydraulic efficiency. It may still be called as rectangular section.

Details of its hydraulic efficiency in comparison to semi circle, Mehboob and trapeziodal sections are discussed in chapter 1, para 1.8

Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) combines features of analysis of variance and regression analysis to account for the influence of a concomitant or covariate variable. In forestry and horticultural experiments, initial measurements or other associated characteristics may influence the response variable and contribute to experimental variation. This chapter explains how treatment effects can be evaluated after adjusting for the linear relationship with a covariate. It presents the ANCOVA framework, calculation of sums of squares, regression coefficients, adjusted error and treatment variation, F-tests, and adjusted treatment means. Examples involving seedling growth and physiological responses demonstrate how covariance adjustment can provide more precise comparisons among treatments.

INTRODUCTION

The fine feeder roots of many vascular plants are invaded by specific nonpathogenic fungi forming a distinct morphological unit known as mycorrhiza (In Greek, Mykes mean mushroom or fungus, rhiza mean root). Physiologically mycorrhiza represents a case of symbiosis.

The term mycorrhizae were coined by a German botanist Albert Bernard Frank in 1885 which literally mean “fungus-roots”.  Mycorrhizal fungi form a symbiotic association with agricultural and horticultural crops in addition to certain tropical tree species.
Mycorrhizal fungi are broadly classified in to two groups:
1) Ectomycorrhizae  
2) Endomycorrhizae.

Raster sub-setting is done to select the desired area or bands of the raster image on which the user wants to perform analysis. Raster sub-setting is done in two ways:

Spectral subset: Spectral sub-setting is done to extract few desired bands from the multiband raster image which are required for analysis.

Spatial subset: Spatial sub-setting is done to minimize the area or extent of raster image to the desired area or extent for further analysis.

In recent years, the global agricultural landscape has witnessed a paradigm shift towards more sustainable and ethical practices, with a particular focus on the well- being of animals. One such notable transformation is evident in the egg production industry, where traditional methods are being reconsidered in favour of more humane alternatives. Cage-free farming has emerged as a promising path, not only for meeting the demands of a conscientious consumer base but also for addressing concerns related to animal welfare. Cage-free farming represents a departure from conventional egg production systems that confine laying hens to small, restrictive cages. Instead, it offers an environment that allows hens to express natural behaviors, such as walking, spreading their wings, and nesting.

Introduction 
The discovery of antibiotics—one of the greatest medical breakthroughs of the 20th century—began when Sir Alexander Fleming noticed that the fungus Penicillium notatum inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus spp. This finding sparked a search for similar properties in other fungi and bacteria. From 1940 to 1960, known as the ‘Golden Era of Antibiotic Discovery’, most modern antibiotics such as streptomycin, tetracycline, rifampicin, and nalidixic acid were identified through natural product screening (Clardy et al., 2006; Lewis, 2013). However, the declaration that “it is time to close the book on infectious diseases and declare the war against pestilence won” proved to be premature (Davies & Davies, 2010). It was not a final victory but a fragile truce. In the ongoing war between humans and microbes—nature’s own creations—our successes are brief, and the microbial battleground keeps shifting. Bacteria’s genetic adaptability, coupled with human complacency, led to antimicrobial resistance (AMR), where microbes gradually evolved resistance to almost all known antibiotics (Ventola, 2015). Resistance appeared soon after antibiotics entered clinical use, but the emergence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), multidrug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and extended-spectrum ß-lactamase (ESBL)-producing bacteria marked major setbacks (Prestinaci et al., 2015; WHO, 2023). AMR gained global attention with the rise of pan-drug-resistant strains—resistant to all antibiotic classes—seen in Klebsiella (India), Acinetobacter, and Pseudomonas (China, Italy, Greece), and extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB). Many diseases, nematodes, insects and weeds affect crop production, causing severe yield loss. Weather is the most important factor that determines the geographical distribution of these crop pests. The local weather patterns have a significant impact on the abundance of diseases and insect pests in the crops. The severity of disease and pest development depends on the combination of weather conditions during the growing season and is variable from season to season. The weather conditions include temperature (both the maximum and the minimum), light, rain, humidity, dew, cloudiness, sunshine, wind, air currents, evaporation, snow and atmospheric pressure. However, among these weather parameters, temperature and humidity play the major roles in infection of crops due to insect pests and diseases.
