Agriculture plays a pivotal role in India’s economy, it shares 18.2 % (202324) in country’s GDP at current prices and employs 42.3 % of the Indian workforce, particularly in rural areas, making it one of the largest sources of livelihood (Anon., 2024). With 1.41 billion peoples, India is the world largest populous country and agriculture is crucial for ensuring food security. India’s agricultural exports also significant in boosting its economy through generating foreign exchange of 53 billion dollars in 2023 and contributing around 11.8% to total exports (Statista, 2023). India is the largest producer of milk, millets, banana, sapota, cashew nuts, coconuts, tea, ginger, turmeric, black pepper and second largest producer of wheat, rice, sugar, groundnut and in the world (APEDA, 2024). The sector also provides raw materials for many industries, such as textiles and food processing. India achieved self-sufficiency in food grains after Green Revolution, using introduction of high-yielding varieties (HYVs) of crops, especially wheat and rice, chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and improved irrigation techniques, which dramatically increased crop productivity. The improved productivity also helped to increase farmers’ incomes, raise living standards in rural areas, and support the development of rural infrastructure. Moreover, surplus food production allowed India to build buffer stocks, which could be used to manage food shortages or price fluctuations.

Blood serves as a significant byproduct within the meat industry, and the  efficient management of its collection and processing is crucial for improving profitability. The amount of blood obtained from slaughtered animals typically ranges from 5-7% of their live weight. Despite diligent efforts, a portion of blood is inevitably lost during the slaughtering process due to spillage and various other factors. To reduce these losses, several essential practices can be adopted:
1. Effective slaughterhouse design: Enhancing the layout and operational procedures within the slaughterhouse can significantly minimize spillage. This encompasses the implementation of well-structured drainage systems and collection vessels.
2. Training and protocols: It is essential to ensure that personnel are thoroughly trained in blood collection methods and strictly follow established protocols to mitigate accidental loss. This involves appropriate handling and prompt processing to prevent clotting and spoilage.
3. Technology: Allocating resources towards advanced blood collection and processing technologies can enhance operational efficiency. Automated systems facilitate the collection, filtration, and storage of blood while minimizing waste.
4. Regular maintenance: Maintaining equipment and facilities in optimal condition is vital to prevent leaks and other complications that may result in blood loss.
5. Storage and processing: After collection, blood must be processed promptly to prevent coagulation. Efficient cooling and storage practices are essential for preserving its quality and maximizing its potential for subsequent processing into products such as blood meal or plasma.
Collection of Blood
Blood may be collected directly into metal or plastic drums when animals are suspended for bleeding. In cases where the animals are slaughtered on the ground, small enamel or plastic bowls can be placed under the bleeding site to collect the blood, which can subsequently be transferred into a drum. The delicate dance between the monsoon and agricultural cycles has shaped cultural practices, economic structures, and societal well-being for centuries. It is estimated that a substantial percentage of global agricultural production is reliant on monsoonal rainfall, underscoring the profound impact these weather systems have on food security and economic stability worldwide. The variability of monsoons – in terms of onset, intensity, duration, and spatial distribution – directly translates into fluctuations in crop yields, impacting everything from local food supplies and farmer incomes to national economies and international trade. Beyond the economic implications, the social vulnerability associated with monsoon variability cannot be overstated. Communities that depend on rainfed agriculture are particularly susceptible to the vagaries of the monsoon. Delayed or weak monsoons can lead to widespread crop failures, resulting in food shortages, economic hardship, and even migration. Conversely, excessively heavy rains can cause devastating floods, destroying crops, infrastructure, and livelihoods. Therefore, understanding, monitoring, and, crucially, forecasting the behavior of monsoons is not merely an academic exercise but a critical necessity for ensuring the prosperity and resilience of a significant portion of the global population. Agriculture is one of the promising sectors which offers marvelous potential for sustainable growth and play a key role in the economy of the country. Many of the foods that are already common in our diet are obtained from plant varieties that were developed using conventional genetic techniques of breeding and selection. Increase in the world population and limited food supply strained researchers to introduce and advance agriculture management and modern technologies along with conventional practices to attain highest possible crop productivity. Agricultural technology is based on the domestication of wild plants to create the crops that we have come to depend upon. Humans invented agriculture approximately 10,000 years ago when they began to harvest and cultivate specific plants to produce food. The improved plant traits selected by early agriculturalists were transmitted genetically to succeeding generations of plants. Both public institutions and private companies are now involved in crop genetic improvement.

Introduction

Agriculture plays a vital role in India’s economy. Over 58% of the rural households depend on agriculture as their principal means of livelihood. As per the 2^nd advanced estimates by the Central Statistics Office (CSO), the share of agriculture and allied sectors (including agriculture, livestock, forestry and fishery) is estimated to be 17.3% of the Gross Value Added (GVA) during 2016- 17 at 2011-12 prices. The GDP of agriculture and allied sectors was recorded at $244.7 billion in FY 2016.

Introduction Noodles have received importance worldwide due to their particular taste, flavor, convenience, consumer acceptance, and low cost. The noodles generally come under the category of unhealthy and junk food because of high carbohydrate content and low vitamins, minerals, and fiber content (Park et al., 2011). Due to the increasing popularity of instant noodles, many people are becoming more prone to various health problems. The substitution of various ingredients to wheat flour noodles is increasing by incorporating different pulses, cereals, and pseudocereals to improve the nutritional properties and also make them health food. Among the pseudocereals, the use of amaranth and chia seeds in food products has been increasing because of their high nutritional value and good health benefits. Their proteins have well-balanced amino acids with a high content of essential amino acids and also good bioavailability (Lopez et al., 2019). These pseudocereals are also gaining importance due to their high content of phytochemicals and other macromolecules. The amaranth (Amaranthus sp) seeds are spherical and small, having approximately 1 mm diameter with a creamish to light reddish color. The composition of amaranth flour includes amylose (7.05%), proteins (15.27%), fat (7.33%), crude fiber (2.04%), and ash (2.93%) (Siwatch et al., 2019).

Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)
There are two types of properties viz., i) Tangible, physical or material property and ii) Intangible or intellectual property. Intellectual property (IP) pertains to any original creation of the human intellect such as artistic, literary, technical or scientific creation. The tangible or physical properties are protected by the laws of land. In contrast, intellectual property is an idea, a formula, an invention, a design, a variety, etc. which= may give rise to a useful product. For obvious reasons the inventors would like to be rewarded and their inventions be protected from imitation. Such a right of an inventor to obtain economic benefit and protection of the invention from imitation is known as Intellectual Property Right (IPR). Thus, Intellectual property rights (IPR) refers to the legal rights given to the inventor or creator to protect his invention or creation for a certain period of time (Singh, 2008).
Why Intellectual Property needs to be protected?
Intellectual property rights (IPR) encourage innovation and protect the rights of the inventors in legalized form. It is an inevitable tool in today’s globalized economy. The invention of such things would require intellectual capacity, innovativeness and creative ability of the concerned person(s).

Barleria L. (Acanthaceae) is a pantropical genus of herbs and shrubs comprising about 300 species, occurring mainly in Africa and Asia. In India, the genus is represented by about 32 species of which 24 are endemic to India.  About 80 % of the species are found in Peninsular India. Many species of Barleria are of ornamental value and can be grown for their foliage and showy colorful flowers. There are certain indigenous species which show good growth performance in cultivation and have economic importance as ornamentals. Moreover, some species fall under IUCN categories of threatened plants which need immediate attention for their conservation. Considering the horticultural importance especially in landscape gardening and rarity of Barlerias, various species found in India are collected and cultivated through various methods in the Botanical Garden of Shivaji University, Kolhapur.

Abstract

The recent earth movements and the related seismicities in the Southern part of the Indian Peninsula has been a matter of enigma for a century and more. While one school was strongly holding the opinion that the southern Indian Peninsula is free from recent earth movements as it is a shield area, the other school has narrated the possibilities for the ongoing earth movements. Under these circumstances, the various anomalies observed from satellite data and ground based information on geomorphology, subsurface lithology, geophysics, hydrogeology, geochemistry etc. have suggested a possible Pleistocene / Holocene graben along Pondicherry in the northeast and Cumbum Valley in the southwest in the southern tip of the Indian Peninsula.

12.1 INTRODUCTION

Water is a factor of prime importance in agriculture industry. Water management is one of the largest and most important inputs into an orchard. An efficient water management refers to artificial application of water, i.e., irrigation in crop root zones in case of soil moisture deficit and removal of water, i.e., drainage from the root zone in case of excess so as to provide the crops a most optimum soil moisture regime for best production. It means how best we are in irrigating and dewatering our fields so that plants are protected from stress as well as water logging (Goswami, 2015). Water resources are continuously overburdened with excessive drafts and water sources are shrinking at faster rate. Groundwater levels are falling at the rates faster than ever. Under this type of circumstances, judicious use of water should be given due attention for water conservation and also in increasing water productivity. Area under horticultural plantations is increasing at exponential rate. The unproductive uplands and low productive midlands and lowlands are brought under fruit based horticultural plantations. For a profitable orchard enterprise, a well-planned irrigation system and efficient water management practice are of utmost importance. Horticultural sector, which includes vegetables, f lowers and fruits, has enormous potential for development owing to varying agro-climatic conditions in India. There is tremendous scope for increase in productivity and quality of horticultural crops, which is necessary to compete in this modern competitive world market. There are many production technologies available to increase the per unit vegetable production and also to increase its quality. One of the widely acceptable, reliable and cost- effective technologies is pressurized irrigation.

I. Definition of wasteland

Wasteland include degraded forest, overgrazed pastures, drought- struck pastures, eroded valley, hill slopes, water logged marshy lands, barren lands etc.

Different authors have defined wastelands as:

Land which is lying unproductive or which is not being utilized to its potential.

Land which is incapable of producing material or services of value (American Society of Soil science).

Land which has been abandoned and for which there is no further use (Mine spoils).

Land which produces less than 20% of economic potential. e) Land where no greenery can be sustained.

Land which is neither under forest cover or agricultural cover or assigned for specific purposes such as National park or National hydro power projects.

The Technical Task Group Report of the National Wasteland Board defines the wasteland due to different constraints.

Research methodology is a detailed plan of investigation and the blueprint of procedure for carrying out the research. Nitrogen

Most commonly, complex organic compounds, ammonia, molecular nitrogen, nitrite, and nitrate are the forms of nitrogen found in soils. The physical and chemical conditions of the soil control the majority of the microbiological interconversions that change nitrogen.

Ammonia build-up, ammonia loss by volatilization, denitrification, nitrogen f ixation, and leaching losses of nitrogen are the primary changes that occur in submerged soils. The nutrition of rice is significantly impacted by these changes. Given the favourable circumstances for quick soil transformations and nitrogen loss, it is obvious that rice soils are nitrogen deficient.

Correlation coefficient

We measure the degree of association between two variables by calculating Pearson’s product moment correlation coefficient, usually just called the correlation coefficient.

It was developed by Karl Pearson from a related idea introduced by Francis Galton in the 1880s, and for which the mathematical formula was derived and published by Auguste Bravais in 1844. In 1896, Karl Pearson published his first rigorous treatment of correlation and regression in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London.

The linear correlation coefficient (sometimes called Pearson's Correlation Coefficient), commonly denoted, is a measure of the strength of the linear relationship between two variables.

• We say that we have perfect correlation if all the points lie on the line; in this case, the value of the correlation coefficient takes one of its extreme values, either +1 or −1 (Figure 7a and 7b).

• We have positive correlation if the sign of the correlation coefficient is positive; then there is a direct relationship between the two variables so that as one variable increases in value, the other variable increases (Figure 7a) or there is a tendency for it to do so.

• We have negative correlation if the sign of the correlation coefficient is negative; then there is an inverse relationship between the two variables so that as one variable increases in value, the other variable decreases (Figure 7b) or there is a tendency for it to do so.

• We have no linear association (i.e. the variables are uncorrelated) if the correlation coefficient is zero; then there is a random scatter of points with no indication of a linear relation between the variables (Figure 7c.). Note that a non-linear relationship between the variables can also give a correlation coefficient of zero.

Introduction

It became clear from the discussions of previous chapters that probiotics perform metabolic functions such as fermenting indigestible dietary residues and endogenous mucus, production of vitamins, and absorption of minerals. They also play key role in intestinal epithelial cell proliferation and differentiation, and the homeostasis of the immune system. Further, probiotics are also known to involve in modifying gut pH, antagonizing pathogens through the production of antimicrobial compounds, competing with pathogens for recept or sites as well as for available nutrients and growth factors, stimulating immunomodulatory cells of the host, and produce a wide range of enzymes such as lactase, amylase, lipase, protease, phytase and so on. The molecular mechanisms of probiotics are largely unknown and opens avenue for research in probiotics. Moreover, current research in probiotics and health consciousness in the public lead to an increased interest towards probiotics from the public, researchers, governmental organizations (such as the WHO/FAO) and medicine and food companies. In this chapter, application of probiotics in treating various diseases and disorders are discussed.

Agricultural robotics is transforming farming by introducing automated machinery capable of performing agricultural operations with greater precision and efficiency. This chapter explores the role of robotics in planting, irrigation, spraying, crop monitoring, weed management, harvesting, and other farm activities. Integration of artificial intelligence, machine learning, sensors, cameras, and IoT enables robots to collect information, analyse field conditions, and perform tasks with limited human intervention. The chapter discusses the major applications, benefits, and limitations of agricultural robotics. Robotics can address labour shortages, improve resource-use efficiency, reduce operational time, and support sustainable farming. However, high investment costs, technical complexity, infrastructure requirements, and skill shortages remain important adoption barriers

Abstract

Brassica vegetables belonging to family Brassicaceae are one of the most important groups of cool season vegetables. Initially, these crops were confined to Europe and other temperate regions. But, after the Second World War, their cultivation has spread to tropics and sub tropics as well. All the members of this group have originated primarily from the common ancestor wild cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. oleracea) and are fully cross-compatible with each other. In general, these are highly cross pollinated crops and have shown preponderance of non-additive gene action for most of the economic traits thereby suggesting the relevance of heterosis breeding. In the absence of appropriate genetic mechanism for the production of hybrid seed with ease at relatively lower cost, heterosis in a crop is of no practical value. Fortunately, the presence of natural genetic phenomenon of sporophytic self incompatibility and male sterility (particularly CMS) in brassica vegetables has proved instrumental in commercialization of hybrid seed production.

Advances in analyticalchemistry and instrumentalanalytical chemistry in the pastfew decades have significantlyimproved, makingelemental determinations in soil extracts and water samples easier, faster and less challenging for the analyst. For most of the elemental analysis procedures, the more traditional wet chemistryprocedures havebeenreplaced byvarious analytical instrumental procedures that employ either emission or absorption spectrophotometry. The elemental concentration in prepared soil extracts and water samples can be determined by a number of instrumentalanalyticalprocedures.

The trend today is toward greater analytical sophistication, to multielement computer controlled analytical instrumentation, resulting in a less ended understandingof the analytical principlesinvolved, and “black box” concepts of instrument calibration, maintenance, and operation. Preparation of the analyte and suitable adaptation for a method of analysis requires an understanding, by the analyst, of the principle of the method as well as its requirements and limitations. Adequate testing is usually required before putting the method to use, following procedures such as those that have been adapted by the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC).

It is not possible to cover in adequatedetail every method of analysissuitedfor the elemental concentration determination in soil extracts and water samples. Therefore, the objective here is to provide sufficient background information about the instrumentalprinciples to guide the reader.

Ideal plant health and productivity of a cropping system depends on an adequate amount of plant nutrients. Fertility of the soil refers to its capacity to support the production of crops. A productive fertile soil can support optimal plant growth, seed germination to plant maturity by providing adequate soil volume for plant root development, essential plant nutrients to meet the nutritional requirements of the plants, and encourage for the consequent plant structure. These attributes of the soil can be distinguished as inherent or dynamic soil quality indicators.Optimum plant health and productivity of a cropping system depends on an adequate supply of plant nutrients.
