Abstract

Electronic waste or e-waste is one of the emerging problems in developed and developing countries worldwide. The constantly changing today’s world of technology has led to the serious problem of e-waste. The previous studies show that India has generated 0.6 million tons of e-waste in 2014 which may increase to 0.7 to 0.9 million tons by 2015–2016. E-waste constitutes multiple components some of which are toxic that can cause serious health and environmental issues if not handled properly. The challenge is to develop innovative and cost-effective solutions to decontaminate polluted environments, to make them safe for human habitation and consumption, and to protect the functioning of the ecosystems which support life. Biological approach is currently applied to recovery of metals from contaminated soil, groundwater, surface water, and sediments including air.

Tissue or cell samples from a living organism, different cell cultures grown in a laboratory incubator under controlled conditions, homogenates or extracts of cells and tissues, solutions of isolated and purified components (e.g. proteins, nucleic acids) can all be referred to as biological samples. As the medium of life is water, the majority of biological samples can be defined as aqueous solutions with one or more components, colloidal systems, or water-based suspensions (e.g. bacterial cells dispersed in a liquid medium). Consequently, most biochemical experiments also take place in aqueous environments. Different solids (e.g. chemical substances obtained from different companies, synthetic oligonucleotides or peptides) are also often necessary for biochemical research. In most cases, solids are dissolved in water (or sometimes in other solvents) prior to the experiments. Therefore, the methods of preparing solutions and measuring accurately the weight of the required solids will also be discussed below. Sometimes we use gases in the laboratory. These can be stored in gas cylinders (e.g. O₂), in Dewar flasks in liquid state (e.g. liquid nitrogen), or dissolved in water (e.g. HCl or NH₃). By working with gases it is very important to follow all safety instructions to avoid fire, explosions, frostbite or (in case of inhalation) asphyxia or poisoning.

Abstract

Mine spoils pose adverse conditions for soil microbes and plant growth, due to its low organic content and other essential nutrients, unfavourable soil chemistry and poor soil texture. Poor microbial population inhibits nutrient transformation, consequently the establishment of the plants and ultimately affects the process of ecological succession. A synergy among different groups of beneficial microbes accompanied by plantation of suitable tree species on mined over area has proved to be effective for speedy and efficient revitalization of the mined affected lands. Inoculation of plantation with efficient strains of native microbes accelerates the soil redevelopment and helps to establish nutrients cycle readily which attracts native flora thereby the pace of natural regeneration is increased. It is therefore imperative to consider the application of effective microflora in restoration of mined lands along with the plantation.

Aim

To synthesize gold (Au) nanoparticle using fungal mycelium.

Introduction

Biosynthesis of nanoparticles is a kind of bottom up approach where the main reaction occurring is reduction/oxidation. The fungal enzymes are usually responsible for reduction of metal compounds into their respective nanoparticles.

The history of nanotechnology in the modern world dates back to 1959 when American physicist Richard Feynman inspired the scientific community in his lecture “There is a plenty of rooms at the bottom”. Research on nanosized particles dramatically developed into an important field of modern research with potential effects in electronics to medicine and recently in agriculture and food industry.

Nanoparticles exhibit unique properties in terms of chemical, physical, photoelectrochemical and electronic properties when compared to their respective bulk materials. The applications of these nanosized particles are defined in a bigger ways in the field of Biotechnology. All these applications require custom based synthesis methods for specific applications.

Aim

To synthesize phosphorus (P) nanoparticles from tricalcium phosphate using fungal mycelium.

Introduction

Green nanotechnology includes a range of processes that reduce or eliminate toxic substances to restore environment. Microorganisms like fungi and bacteria having naturally bestowed property of reducing and oxidizing nanoparticles, are used for synthesis.

Introduction to the Salmonid Family (Trout’s and Salmon)
The Salmonidae constitute the only extant family of ray-finned fish in the order Salmoniformes, with 11 genera and more than 200 species collectively referred to as "salmonids" or "salmonioids". This family includes all coldwater mid-level predatory fish found in subarctic and cool temperate waters in the Northern Hemisphere, such as char, graylings, freshwater whitefish, taimens, lenoks, and salmon (both Atlantic and Pacific species). New Delhi eponym of its genus, the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), has also been given the names of its family and order as well. Among teleost fish, salmonids have a relatively primitive appearance, with pelvic fins in the rear and an adipose fin at the rear. There is a single row of sharp teeth in their mouth, along with rounded scales and forked tail fins (Mc Dowell, 1998). Salmonids vary greatly in size, and the smallest reach only 13 cm (5.1 in) when adults, while the largest reaches 2 m (6 ft 7 in) (Pauly et al., 2008). Salmonids are migratory fish that spawn in the shallow gravel beds of freshwater headstreams, develop into juveniles in rivers, creeks, small lakes, and wetlands, and then migrate downstream to spend the majority of their adult lives in larger bodies of water upon reaching maturity. Often euryhaline, salmonid species migrate to the sea or brackish estuaries as soon as they reach adulthood. Just for breeding purposes, they migrate back to the upper streams. Some freshwater salmonids that migrate only between lakes and rivers are referred to as potamodromous, whereas the life cycle of these sea-run salmonids is known as anadromous. In the middle food chain, salmonids are carnivorous predators that eat smaller fish, crustaceans, aquatic insects and larvae, tadpoles, and occasionally fish eggs (even those belonging to their own species), which are then eaten by larger predators. Salmonids are regarded as keystone organisms that contribute biomass to freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems as a result of their mass migration from oceanic to inland waterbodies. Three lineages of salmonids are currently recognized, each classified as a subfamily: Coregoninae (freshwater whitefish), Thymallinae (graylings), and Salmoninae (trout, salmon, char, taimens, and lenoks). Each of the three lineages is generally accepted to belong to a monophyletic group based on derived traits (McPhail and Strouder, 1997).
Salmons and trouts are well-known for their economic importance as both sport fish and commercial products. Trout and salmon stocks are stocked worldwide each year for sport and commerce. Millions of salmon and trout are hatched, raised, and stocked every year as part of government investment programs. To meet market and restaurant demands for trout, a large private industry has developed—especially in Denmark, Japan, and the U.S. Scientists are confronted with the challenge of perpetuating and increasing the abundance of salmon and trout because of the increasing human population and industrial and agricultural demands on rivers. Among heavily populated regions, the demand for trout outstrips the supply. As a result, state and federal agencies in the United States have initiated massive programs to raise and stock trout in heavily fished waters. The artificial abundance of trout, however, is not a good substitute for the natural abundance of the fish.

Introduction
Schizothoracinae, commonly known as snow trouts, are a specialized group of fish thriving in the fast-flowing, snow-fed streams and lakes of regions such as Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Himalayas in India and Nepal, China, and parts of the former USSR. Adapted to these challenging environments, Schizothoracinae have not been extensively studied due to the difficult terrain they inhabit. In India, they are primarily found along the Himalayan range, with an exception in the Periyar, Kerela (river and lake). The Indian Schizothoracinae are classified into seven genera, forming a significant part of Exclusively Distributed by NIPA GENX Electronic Resources and Solution Pvt. Ltd. New Delhi the Himalayan fishery. Resembling Salmonidae, they are commonly referred to as "Indian Trout." Early mentions of Schizothorax species by Day (1877, 1889) were brief. Subsequent taxonomic studies by researchers such as Hora (1921, 1934, 1937, 1953), Misra (1949), and Mukerji (1936) have provided a more comprehensive understanding of their taxonomy.
The Schizothoracinae, part of the Cyprinidae family, represent a diverse group uniquely adapted to high-altitude environments and have been categorized into three groups based on their morphological characteristics: "primitive group," "specialized group," and "highly specialized group" (Cao et al., 1981). The primitive group includes Schizothorax and Aspiorhynchus, which share more traits with the outgroup Barbodes hexagonolepis. They are distinguished by the presence of uroneuralia, three or four rows of pharyngeal teeth, minimal scale degeneration, and a lack of pronounced sexual dimorphism. The specialized group includes Ptychobarbus, Gymnodiptychus, and Diptychus, and is marked by the absence of uroneuralia, one or two rows of pharyngeal teeth, and moderate scale degeneration. The highly specialized group, which comprises Gymnocypris, Oxygymnocypris, Schizophygopsis, Chuanchia, and Platypharodon, is characterized by the complete absence of barbels and scales and a well-developed canalis preoperculomandibularis (Qi et al., 2012, Yonezawa et al., 2014). The genus Schizothorax comprises 63 species in total. Among these, 34 species are mainly found in Central Asia, while 28 species inhabit the Indo-Himalayan region. The species of Schizothorax in the Himalayan region include S. curvifrons, S. nasus, S. richardsonii, O. sinuatus, S. planifrons, S. esocinus, Schizothoraichthys progastus, S. longipinnis, S. kumanonensis, O. molesworthii, S. hugelli, S. labiatus, and S. micropogon (Menon, 1999; Mishra, 2003; Zhang et al., 2018; Ma et al., 2020).

The larval phase is among the most delicate and significant periods in the development of fish and shellfish. It represents the shift from the embryonic stage to early juvenile life and greatly influences survival, growth, and the overall productivity of aquaculture ventures. During this stage, the larvae exhibit distinct morphological, physiological, and behavioral traits, which differ considerably from those of adult organisms.
Newly hatched larvae are usually microscopic and underdeveloped, depending initially on internal energy reserves like the yolk sac for nourishment. After this endogenous feeding phase, they transition to feeding on external sources such as plankton, rotifers, and Artemia. Timely access to suitable food is crucial, as any delay can result in starvation and large-scale mortality.
Fish larvae undergo rapid structural changes as they develop, including the formation of fins, a functional mouth, and a digestive system. Likewise, shrimp and crab larvae progress through multiple stages—nauplius, zoea, mysis, and post-larva—each with specific needs for food and habitat.
Physiologically, larvae have high energy demands and poorly developed respiratory systems, making them extremely sensitive to environmental factors such as oxygen, ammonia, and temperature. Their weak immune systems and fragile exteriors make them prone to disease and stress from handling.
Larval feeding is influenced by visual and environmental cues, and due to their small mouth size, they require micro-sized live feeds early on. Hatcheries must, therefore, maintain live feed cultures and gradually transition larvae to formulated diets as they grow.
Effective hatchery practices depend heavily on an understanding of larval biology. Parameters like light exposure, stocking density, water conditions, and sanitation directly impact larval development. Even minor changes in temperature

The job of postharvest technologist is to understand life in fruits, vegetables and flowers and prolong their life as much as possible. The post harvest life of produce depends on the rate at which they use up their stored food reserves and their rate of water loss. The sugar and starches (carbohydrate derivatives) are stored in various parts of plants through a process known as photosynthesis occurring in growing plants and are used later to provide energy for further growth, development and to prolong post-harvest life. The process of photosynthesis in growing plants and respiration in harvested produce can be seen in Fig. 2.1. The released energy through process known as respiration occurs in plants before and after harvest. Thus, principal normal physiological processes leading to aging are respiration and transpiration.

Except lions, the tigers like other felids are highly solitary and however, during the breeding period, the males will approach the female for mating activity. Tigers are highly territorial in nature. Like other felids, retractile claws are present in felid which is an anatomically peculiar feature. They are crepuscular in nature and however, they are quite active in the morning hours.

Life cycle of nematode has six stages. The egg stage, first stage juvenile (J₁), second stage juvenile (J₂), third stage juvenile (J₃), fourth stage juvenile (J₄) and the adult stage.

The first four stages are the immature stages and are known as juvenile stages. The female lays eggs in soil or in plant tissues, singly or in groups as egg mass that hatch out into juveniles which are almost similar to adults appearance. The first moult occurs within the egg shell and the second stage juvenile comes out by rupturing the egg shells as J₂. In case of Xiphinema index, the juveniles are reported to emerge from the egg before the first moult. The juvenile cuticle is shed after each moult.

The egg

The nematode eggs are oval in shape. The eggs are covered by three membranes, the external protein layer which is the secretion of uterus wall, the middle chitinous layer or the true shell secreted by egg itself and the inner lipid layer (vitelline layer). The chitin content in the egg shell vary in different species of nematodes.

Endangered species

Endangered (EN): A taxon that is not critically endangered but facing a very high risk of extinction in the natural environment in the near future, it is considered to be endangered.

The important criteria are

1. A decline of at least 50% over at least 10 years or three generations that has been observed, estimated, inferred, or suspected. 2. Population thought to consist of no more than 2500 mature individuals.

This chapter introduces the biological processes responsible for wool production in sheep. It examines the structure of sheep skin, wool follicles, primary and secondary follicles, follicle development and the secondary-to-primary follicle ratio. The use of biological light in active transport, nerve transmission, and muscle contraction is a feature shared by all living organisms. Surprisingly, a large number of living organisms have evolved the ability to convert chemical energy into light, which is manifested as bioluminescence.

Bioluminescence is a fascinating biological phenomenon found in both terrestrial and aquatic living organisms. The light emitted by living organisms as a result of chemical reactions in their bodies is known as bioluminescence. Cold light is produced by this type of chemiluminescence.

Biomass briquetting is the process of compressing loose and low-density biomass materials such as sawdust, agricultural residues, and forest waste into high-density, solid fuel blocks called briquettes. The process involves mechanical compression under high pressure using machines like piston presses, screw extruders, or hydraulic presses, depending on the technology used.
The main purpose of briquetting is to increase the density of biomass to improve its combustion properties, handling, transportation, and storage efficiency. In most modern systems, briquetting is done without the use of binders, as natural lignin present in the biomass acts as a binding agent under pressure and heat.

It’s made up of a complex mixture of organic compounds like cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, proteins, fats, and minerals, which can vary depending on the source and type of biomass. Understanding the composition and properties of biomass is essential for efficient use. In this chapter, we’ll provide an overview of how to analyze and evaluate biomass as a renewable energy source. We’ll cover various techniques and methodologies for analyzing biomass, including physical, chemical, and thermal properties. We’ll discuss the importance of biomass composition, moisture content, ash content, elemental analysis, calorific value, and other relevant parameters when assessing its suitability for energy conversion. Additionally, we’ll highlight the significance of biomass characterization in understanding biomass feedstock variability and its impact on energy production efficiency, environmental performance, and sustainability.

1.1 General

Biomass is a renewable and plentiful energy source with enormous potential to meet the rising demand for clean and sustainable energy solutions. This chapter offers an overview of biomass and its conversion technology, which includes various techniques to transform biomass into useful forms of energy like heat, electricity, and biofuels.

Biomass is an organic substance obtained from plants, animals, and microorganisms. It can be utilized as a source of energy or as a basic material in various applications. The energy in biomass is derived from photosynthesis, during which plants convert sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water into organic matter. Since it comes from living or recently deceased organisms, it is a sustainable and renewable resource. In terms of carbon dioxide emissions, biomass is considered a carbon-neutral energy source because the carbon dioxide produced during combustion is offset by the carbon dioxide absorbed by plants during their growth.

5.1 Introduction

The densification of biomass involves transforming loose and low-density organic materials, such as wood residues, agricultural waste, and plant-based materials, into compact and energy-dense forms. This process is necessary because natural biomass can be challenging to handle, transport, and store. Densification uses mechanical, thermal, or chemical processes to increase the material’s density and energy characteristics. The resulting products, such as pellets, briquettes, or cubes, offer several advantages, including higher energy content per unit volume, efficient storage and transportation, reduced moisture content, and improved combustion efficiency. These products are utilized in various industries, including energy production, residential heating, waste management, and industrial applications. Biomass densification promotes sustainable practices by effectively utilizing biomass resources, reducing waste, and promoting the use of renewable energy sources while mitigating environmental impacts.

2.1 Introduction

Biomass store solar energy in the chemical form and it is most precious and versatile resources on earth. Biomass, unlike fossil fuels, is a renewable energy resource that is available where the climatic conditions are favorable for plant growth and production¹. The term biomass is used for all organic materials which are combustible in nature, mainly plant and animal origin present in land and aquatic environments. Biomass is considered carbon neutral, because the amount of carbon it can release is equivalent to the amount it absorbed during its life time. There is no net increase of carbon to the environment in the long term when combusting the lignocellulosic materials. Therefore, we can say that biomass is a renewable source of energy and can play vital role in responding to concerns over the protection of the environment and the security of energy supply^2,3.

Biomass energy accounts for about 15% of the world’s primary energy consumption and about 38% of the primary energy consumption in developing countries⁴. Furthermore, biomass often accounts for more than 90% of the total rural energy supplies in developing countries⁵. It is the main source to meet out domestic energy in developing countries⁶. The efficient use of fuel wood is much more eco-friendly than the use of efficient and conventional fuels like kerosene and liquefy petroleum gas (LPG). LPG emits 15 times more CO₂ per kg than wood, and kerosene emits nearly 10 times as much. CO₂ is the prominent candidate for global. It is commonly assumed that biomass fuel cycles based on renewable in nature and greenhouse-gas (GHG) neutral because the combusted carbon in the form of CO₂ is soon taken up by re-growing vegetation⁷.

12.1 General

The term “biomass” generally refers to renewable organic matter generated by plants through photosynthesis. Materials having organic combustible matter is also referred under biomass. Biomass is an important fuel source in our overall energy scenario. Biomass is produced through chemical storage of solar energy in plants and other organic matter as a result of photosynthesis. During this process conversion of solar energy in sugar and starch, which are energy rich compounds takes place. The chemical reaction of photosynthesis can be written as:

It indicates that the storage of 636 kcal is associated with the transfer of 72 gm carbon into organic matter. Biomass can be directly utilized as fuel or can be converted through different routes into useful forms of fuel. In fact, biomass is a source of five useful agents, which start with `F’ like Food, Fodder, Fuel, Fiber and Fertilizer. Further, biomass has many advantages like.

5.1 Introduction

Biomass energy is the energy obtained from biomass or living things. Biomass is renewable organic material that comes from plants and animals. Plants generally produced through the process of photosynthesis as shown in Figure 5.1. Biomass is organic, meaning it is made of material that comes from living things, such as plants and animals. Wood, plants, and waste are the most common biomass energy sources. These are called biomass feedstocks. A plant absorbs the sun’s energy through photosynthesis and converts carbon dioxide and water into nutrients (carbohydrates). The energy from these materials can be transformed into usable energy through direct and indirect means. Biomass can be burned to create heat (direct), converted into electricity (direct), or processed into biofuel (indirect).

7.1 Introduction

Biomass gasification is age old technology originated in 1800 century for lighting and cooking purposes (Sansaniwal et al., 2017). Biomass typically contents biopolymers such as cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin in addition to the presence of average composition of C₆H₁₀O₅ which depends upon physical characteristics of biomass¹. Oxygen is required for combustion of every fuel. For complete combustion of biomass stoichiometric air to fuel ratio required varies from 6:1 to 6.5:1 with CO₂ and H₂O as end product.

Biomass gasification is an efficient and environmentally friendly way to produce energy². Gasification process is nothing but it is a conversion of solid fuel into gaseous fuel for wide applications. This whole process completed at elevated temperature range of 800-1300 ^oC with series of chemical reaction that is why it come under thermo chemical conversion³. Thermo chemical processes are most commonly employed for converting biomass into higher heating value fuels⁴. Major thermal conversion route is include direct combustion to provide heat, liquid fuel and other elements to generate process heat for thermal and electricity generation is summaries in Fig. 7.1.

A biomass gasifier is an advanced device designed to convert solid biomass materials-such as wood chips, crop residues, saw-dust, coconut shells, and other organic matter-into a combustible gas mixture known as producer gas. The conversion process, known as gasification, is a thermo-chemical process that takes place in a controlled environment with limited oxygen. Unlike complete combustion, gasification allows only partial oxidation of biomass, producing a gas rich in carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen (H2), methane (CH4), and nitrogen (N2). This gas mixture can be used as a fuel for internal combustion engines, power generation, cooking, or industrial heating applications.
Principle of Gasification
Gasification involves a sequence of four key thermo-chemical reactions within the reactor, occurring at temperatures ranging from 800–1000°C:
1. Drying Zone: Moisture present in the biomass is evaporated due to the rising heat.
H2O (liquid) ? H2O (vapor)
2. Pyrolysis Zone: Biomass decomposes in the absence of oxygen to form volatile gases, tar, and solid char.
Biomass ? Char + Volatile gases + Tar
3. Oxidation Zone: A small amount of air or oxygen is introduced to partially combust the biomass, generating heat to sustain the process.

However, effectively harnessing its benefits necessitates a systematic approach. This chapter introduces the concept of Biomass Management Techniques as a pivotal framework for optimizing the utilization of biomass resources. With a focus on sustainable practices, this chapter delves into various techniques to handle, process, and utilize biomass efficiently. From collection and transportation to storage, conversion, and beyond, Biomass Management Techniques encompass a wide array of methods that ensure the seamless integration of biomass into energy generation, industrial processes, and environmental conservation.

6.1 Introduction

Biomass pellets are one of the most common types of biomass fuel. It is generally composed of wood waste, agricultural biomass, grasses, and forest residues, and is one of the most popular types of biomass fuel available today. Pelletization of biomass results in significant savings in terms of transportation, and storage, as well as the ease of handling biomass as a whole. In terms of flowability, dense cube pellets are similar to cereal grains in terms of their characteristics of being dense and cube-shaped. Due to their regular geometry and small size, biomass pellets are easily fed through an automatic feed system with fine calibration thanks to their regular shape. Because pellets are so dense, they can be stored in a compact way and transported over a long distance in a rational and efficient manner, because of their density. Furthermore, pellets can also be produced with a low moisture content, even though they are extremely dense. This allows them to burn with a high degree of combustion efficiency due to their low moisture content.

Materials having organic combustible matter is also referred under biomass.Biomass is an important fuel source in our overall energy scenario. Biomass is produced through chemical storage of solar energy in plants and other organic matter as a result of photosynthesis. During this process conversion of solar energy in sugar and starch, which are energy rich compounds takes place. The chemical reaction of photosynthesis can be written as:

It indicates that the storage of 636 kcal is associated with the transfer of 72 gm carbon into organic matter. Biomass can be directly utilized as fuel or can be converted through different routes into useful forms of fuel. In fact, biomass is a source of five useful agents, which start with ‘F’ like food, fodder, fuel, fiber and fertilizer. Further, biomass has many advantages like.

The weight of living plant material contained above and below a unit of ground surface area at a given point of time, is known as plant “Biomass”. Biomass is of utter importance because it provides energy source (Roberts et al. 1987).

Biomass, which has dimensions of mass per unit, is expressed as g m^-2, kg ha^-1 or t ha^-1.

Measurement of Biomass

The area (in the crop field) under study is divided into a number of equal squares or rectangular plots measuring 1.0 m² or 0.5 m². Each square is designated with a particular number. Sample can be harvested from a small area or quadrate at the centre of each square; the remaining peripheral area serving as buffer zone (Wiegert, 1962).

Nanotechnology is the manoeuvring or self-assembly of individual atoms, molecules, or molecular clusters into structures to craft materials with new properties. The definition of nanotechnology is based on the prefix “nano” which is from the Greek word meaning “dwarf”. In more technical terms, the word “nano” means 10^-9, or one billionth of something. The word nanotechnology is generally used when referring to materials with the size of 1 to 100 nanometres, which is true for metallic nano-material. In case of polymeric nano-material, size may reach 600 nm, as polymeric materials are larger in size compression to metallic material. Nano-materials have different properties from bulk materials as a result of their size. These differences include physical strength, chemical reactivity, electrical conductance, magnetism, and optical effects (Schmid, 2006).

The term "nano" is used to define one that has a size in the nanometer range. Nanotechnology is an interdisciplinary field of medicine, chemistry, physics, and biology that has emerged during the past few decades as a potential area of study. The goal of this interdisciplinary technology is to transform molecules into entities, then do the opposite. Nanobiotechnology is the term for the fusion of nanotechnology with biotechnology. In nanobiotechnology nanoscale principles and techniques are used to explore biosystems and generate novel biomaterials. Biosensing, cell labelling, and molecular imaging can all gain benefit from nanostructure materials in life science, health and biomedicine.

Green nanocomposites offer promising possibilities for biomedical applications because biodegradable matrices can be combined with nanoscale fillers to obtain specific functional properties. This chapter explores their applications in tissue engineering and drug delivery, with attention to materials such as chitosan, alginate, cellulose, and polylactic acid. It discusses the fundamentals of green nanocomposites, tissue-engineering applications, controlled drug delivery, toxicity, biocompatibility, regulatory considerations, and current limitations. Nanocomposite systems can provide useful mechanical, thermal, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and therapeutic characteristics while supporting more sustainable material development. Phenotypic Diversity

Phenotypic diversity measures the portion of genetic diversity which is expressed phenotypically. So it varies with the character under study and the genetic background and the environment in which it is measured. The measures of genetic diversity based on variance of quantitative traits may be unreliable indicators of diversity in a population at the level of individual gene. But diversity at the molecular level (isozymes, RFLPs) may be a reasonable estimate of phenotypic diversity. The degree of differentiation is related to several biological attributes such as breeding system, mode of pollination and seed dispersal, life history, geographical range, successional stages, etc. The outbreeding populations are much less differentiated whereas the selfers or apomictic are strongly differentiated. Populations of outbreeders contain different alleles especially the rare alleles which contribute little to the diversity. Inbreeders should have greater interpopulations diversity and less intrapopulation diversity than the comparable outbreeders. Further, inbreeders are more prone to show an even distribution of their genetic diversity among populations and this makes their optimum sampling more difficult and any evidence of the geographic pattern of this diversity levels would greatly improve sampling efficiency but geographical and environmental factors rarely explain more than 50% variation.

Biometrical genetics: This is a branches of genetics which uses the statistical concept and procedures for the study of genetic principles.

The need for better analytical tools to analyze the data in aquaculture leads to major developments in statistics. These tools play a significant role in the analysis and interpretation of data. Improvement in carp culture through genetic techniques is the only alternative for increasing the carp production and its quality when area of pond is fixed. For better hybrids or efficient strains for higher production it is essential to collect the data on the genetic diversity among the different carp species on the basis of traits. Therefore, sound statistical procedures are needed in the design of experiments as well as in the analysis of the data. BioNET-International, is the Global Network for Taxonomy, and is dedicated to creating sustainable mechanisms to assist developing countries to overcome the Taxonomic Impediment by becoming self-reliant in taxonomy i.e. self-reliant in the skills, infrastructure (collections etc.) and technologies needed to discover, identify, name and classify and to understand the relationships of all organisms on this planet.

It is concerned with helping developing countries to recognise and know the organisms that constitute and threaten their biodiversity, not for taxonomy’s own sake, but rather to support national programmes for sustainable agricultural development, and conservation and sustainable use of the environment.

BioNET-International is particularly focused on helping countries implement the various environmental conventions such as the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC; www.ippc.int) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD; www.biodiv.org), especially its taxonomic capacity building compnent, the Global Taxonomy Initiative (GTI). The subregional networks of BioNET-International have been identified as appropriate structures through which much of the GTI (www.biodiv.org/programmes/cross-cutting/taxonomy/default.asp) can be effectively implemented.

The single piece of legislation under the Indian Government that regulates the import, manufacturing, sale, transportation, distribution, and use of all varieties of insecticides, including biopesticides, is the Insecticide Act (1968). Various parameters like shelf life, cross-contamination, moisture content, and packaging are significant factors that must be addressed before a biopesticide is registered. According to Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) recommendations, CIB simplified the protocols and listed the infrastructure needs for manufacturing of biopesticides. Information required to generate toxicity calls a strenuous effort.

Agriculture is the main source of income of the rural masses in India and the disease accounts for more than 30% losses every year. According to a WHO estimate of 1990. There were 25 million cases of acute occupational pesticides poisoning in developing countries each year. ILO 1996 estimates suggests that out of 14% of all known occupational injuries 10% of all total injuries are caused by pesticides. Further more developing countries are a dustbin for the developed countries. More than 20, 000 tonnes of obsolete pesticides are dumped in Africa alone. The biopesticides are amenable to small scale and local production. Presently there is an increased awareness regarding environmental and food safety. The biopesticides as such can be used as an essential and fundamental component of integrated pest management. It helps to manage the disease which are difficult, otherwise to be managed and so also these control the pests resistant to conventional pesticides. Paulitz and Belanger (2001) has reviewed the potential of biological control in green house systems.

Three kinds of biocontrol products are being used in India which include 1) Microbial biopesticides, 2) Plant-derived botanical pesticides, and 3) Pheromones or other natural insect growth regulators. Microbial biopesticides consist majorly of fungi, bacteria, viruses or entomopathogenic nematodes as bioactive principles.
