9.1 Introduction

India is a vast country and is gifted with a variety of soils and climates. Thus, almost all kinds of fruits can be grown successfully in this country. It is a matter of great surprise that in spite of provision of adequate resources, the per capita consumption of fruits here is perhaps one of the lowest in the world.

The existing orchards are not able to meet the present requirements of the country. Poor selection of planting material, haphazard plantation and poor management has made many orchards uneconomic. The term ‘Rejuvenation’ means renewal or making new or young again.

As applied to the orchard tree it would mean restoring the productive capacity of the fruit trees. The meaning of ‘Rejuvenation’ according to Chamber’s dictionary is ‘to recover youth character or to grow again’. Obviously, this would apply to those plants which have attained a stage where they are no more profitable from the grower’s point of view.

Chromatography was first employed by Ramsay (1905) to separate mixtures of gases and vapours. The first scientist to recognize chromatography as an efficient method of separation was the Russian botanist Tswett (1906), who used a simple form of liquid-solid chromatography to separate a number of plant pigments. The colored bands he produced on the adsorbent bed evoked the term chromatography for this type of separation (color writing).Althoughcolor haslittletodo with modern chromatography, the name has persisted and, despite its irrelevance, is still used for all separation techniques that employs the essential requisites for a chromatographic separation,viz. a mobile phase and a stationary phase.

Gas-liquid chromatography (GC) was invented by James and Martin (1952) and is a separation technique in which the mobile phase is a gas (usually helium or nitrogen) and the stationary phase is a liquid. In the original columns used by James and Martin, the liquid stationary phase was adsorbed on the surface of an inert support such as Celite (a diatomateous earth) or calcined Celite (a form of brick dust). The support was usually deactivated before use by acid treatment and subsequent reaction with hexamethyldisilazane. The technique was extensively used for the separation of a wide range of volatile substances. Thus, chromatography has been defined as a separation process that is achieved by distributing the components of a mixture between two phases, a stationary phase and a mobile phase. Those components held preferentially in the stationary phase are retained longer in the system than those that are distributed selectively in the mobile phase. As a consequence, solutes are eluted from the system as local concentrations in the mobile phase in the order of their increasing distribution coefficients with respect to the stationary phase.By separating the sample into individual components, it is easier to identify (qualitate) and measure the amount (quantitate) of the various sample components.

Machine learning provides powerful approaches for extracting useful information from complex plant, environmental and agricultural datasets. This chapter examines the principles and applications of machine learning in plant data analysis. It introduces different types of plant data, including phenotypic, genotypic, environmental and image-based information, followed by preprocessing, normalization, feature extraction and feature selection. Supervised learning techniques such as regression, decision trees, random forests and support vector machines are discussed for applications including crop yield prediction and disease detection. Unsupervised learning, clustering, principal component analysis and advanced ensemble and deep learning approaches are also considered, along with model evaluation, data limitations and future developments.

Introduction

Disasters are the natural and man made extreme events which exceeds the tolerable magnitude of any event, where adjustment is difficult. These events are catastrophic and results in the loss of life and property on a huge scale. These abnormal events form the headlines to the newspapers and media a world and national level.

These processes are beneficial to the human beings because they form the earth and habitable planet for the evolution of life. However, these processes within a short time limit forms, hazardous and such activities adversely affect the human beings and human related activities on a very large scale.

Amongst the three important types of disasters viz. natural, anthropogenic and technological, the first and the foremost natural disaster mainly includes the geological atmospheric and other related natural types viz. floods, earthquakes, cyclones, tsunamis etc.

Crops treated with pesticides invariably contain small amount of these chemicals and the hazard depends on the amount of pesticide residues that remain on the crop and their toxicity. The amount of residue that may remain on crop or food commodity and environmental commodities depend on the nature of pesticides, good agricultural practice, environmental conditions and adoption of safe waiting periods and other perfect methods of storage. As residues are inevitable by product of pesticide use, hence pesticide residue in food commodities and their entry in to food chain has become major cause of concern all over the world. The plant science industry has a responsibility to assist farmers to produce crops that are acceptable to the food chain and consumers alike.

It is clear that pesticide residues in farm produce should be kept as low as practicable, and eliminated whenever possible through Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). However, the use of pesticides can be regulated to ensure minimum residues on food which can be considered safe to human consumption and environment as a whole.

To regulate pesticide residues to safe levels, a concept was introduced by Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (1955) and Codex Alimentarius Commissionwas established in 1964 to implement the Joint FAO/ WHO Food Standard Programmes. The Commission has laid down principles for aiming at the maximum residue limits (Tolerance limits) of pesticide on food commodities. The recommendations are based on:

The conventional approach of the human person for plant classification is comparing the color and shape of the leaves, but by using Artificial Intelligence analysis can provide quicker and more detailed results by analyzing the morphology of the leaves and provides more details about the leaf properties. For instance, peelers are designed to remove the skin of various fruits and vegetables without damaging the product, slicers are employed to cut products uniformly for further processing, pulpers are utilized to separate the pulp from seeds and skins, and juicers extract liquid from fruits and vegetables while retaining the flavor and nutritional content. However, ensuring smooth operation also depends on regular upkeeping practices. This includes routine inspections, lubrication, and cleaning to prevent wear and tear, mechanical failures, or contamination. Maintenance tasks also involve checking for malfunctions or parts that need replacement to avoid costly downtime. In addition, proper calibration and adjustment are crucial to ensuring the machines operate at their optimum efficiency and meet safety standards. Failure to maintain these machines can lead to inefficiencies, product defects, and even safety hazards. Therefore, understanding both the operational and maintenance procedures for peelers, slicers, pulpers, and juicers is critical for sustaining production standards, minimizing operational disruptions, and prolonging the life of the equipment.
PEELER
Peeling machines are very important in the food processing sector, providing efficient and accurate skin removal from various fruits and vegetables. These machines simplify the peeling procedure, ensuring that products meet strict standards for subsequent processing or packaging. This detailed guide focuses on the use of blade peeling machines, examining their features and uses in the food industry.

Radiofrequency (RF) pasteurization is an emerging thermal processing technology that uses electromagnetic energy to generate rapid and volumetric heating within food materials. This chapter introduces the principles underlying RF heating and explains how alternating electric fields interact with polar molecules and ions to produce heat. It examines RF system configuration, electrode arrangements, packaging considerations and the operational workflow from raw-material preparation to post-treatment cooling and quality evaluation. Particular attention is given to microbial inactivation, enzyme control, uniform heating, nutrient and bioactive-compound retention, colour and structural preservation. The chapter also discusses technical limitations, hotspot formation, packaging challenges, nutritional considerations and current industrial constraints associated with RF processing.

Abnormal milk: It is milk that is not smooth and homogenous but is flaky, ropy, stringy, slimy, watery, discoloured or bad flavoured.

EMERGENCE OF ALLAHABAD AS A LITERARY CENTER

The period between 1865 to 1936 can be called the ‘literary ’ period of Allahabad (Refer table10.a.). The press was powerful and there were a number of national dailies which came out from the city. Hindi Sahitya Sammelan established in 1911and Prayag Sangeet Samiti in 1925 were the biggest achievements of Allahabad, these institutes were of national repute and strengthened the cultural bearings of the city. A total of 82 libraries functioned during this period, Allahabad was also known as the ‘intellectual’ capital of the country.

The propagation of plants has been a fundamental occupation of mankind since civilization begins. Agriculture started some 10,000 years back when ancient people learned plants and grow kind of plants that fulfilled nutritional needs for themselves and their animals (Hartman et al., 1981). As civilization advanced, people added to the variety of plants cultivating not only for additional food crops but also those that provided fibres, medicine, recreational opportunities and beauty. From the great diversity and variation in plant life, it has been possible to select kinds of plants particularly useful to the welfare of humans and their animals. Bio-diversity has attracted the world wide attention because of growing awareness of its importance on the one hand, and the anticipated awareness depletion on the other. About 20 per cent of all species are expected to be lost within 30 years and 50 per cent or more by the end of 21st Century (Myers, 1993). India is one of the 12 mega-diversity countries globally recognized for its rich diversity, since its geographic position extends from sea level to the highest mountain ranges in the world.

Onion bulbs remain vulnerable to moisture loss, sprouting, rotting and microbial deterioration during extended storage. Traditional structures frequently provide inadequate ventilation and expose produce to fluctuating temperature and humidity. This chapter examines scientific curing and storage technologies, including improved ventilated structures, zero-energy cool chambers, forced-air systems and controlled or modified atmospheres. Renewable-energy and solar-powered facilities are considered for small and marginal farmers. The chapter also discusses value addition through dehydration, powdering, flaking, pickling, paste production and other processed products. Improved storage enables gradual market release and price stabilization, while value addition reduces waste, creates diversified products, enhances shelf life and generates additional income for growers and processors.

Next to the mineral frame work the salts in the soil deserve consideration. In fact these salts constitute the main food material of plants besides what the root hairs can get out of the mineral framework in the form of basic materials already dealt with. We are, however, not concerned with the plant food materials, but salts that are in excess and which alter the properties of the soil to such an extent as to influence its behaviour profoundly.

Onion is a major global commodity, but its value chain is characterized by price volatility, post-harvest losses, fragmented marketing and wide differences between farm-gate and retail prices. This chapter analyses production, trade, marketing and supply-chain trends from global and Indian perspectives. It examines India’s role as a leading producer and exporter and discusses the APMC system, intermediaries, storage deficiencies, Farmer Producer Organisations and export-policy interventions. Digital platforms and technologies—including e-NAM, blockchain traceability, IoT-enabled storage and artificial-intelligence-based price forecasting—are considered for improving transparency, efficiency and coordination. Strategic interventions are proposed to create a more resilient, inclusive, competitive and technology-enabled onion economy

Dead axle (tractor trolley): An axle beam, which does not drive the road wheels. Usually refers to a rear axle which does not have any rotating parts within it, but on which the rear wheels are mounted with antifriction bearing.

Drones’ capacity to swiftly and precisely cover extensive regions has rendered them an essential instrument in contemporary agriculture.
UNDERSTANDING DRONE CROP MONITORING
Crop monitoring using drones is the deployment of drones fitted with specialized sensors and imaging systems to collect data regarding crops and their environment. The data undergoes processing and analysis, yielding outcomes that offer farmers practical insights to enhance crop output, decrease input costs, and mitigate environmental effect. The goal is to employ technology to enhance understanding of crop performance, so enabling more informed management decisions.

Computational intelligence is enabling agriculture to evolve into a data-driven, adaptive and increasingly autonomous system. This chapter introduces its concepts, scope and role in smart agriculture by presenting farms as interconnected cyber-physical-biological environments. It discusses artificial intelligence, data analytics and decision-support systems and explains the progression from traditional farming to precision and smart agriculture. IoT, remote sensing, cloud platforms and digital agricultural ecosystems are examined as enabling technologies. The chapter also considers socioeconomic, environmental and scalability challenges. It establishes the conceptual and architectural foundation required to understand how computational intelligence can improve productivity, sustainability, resilience and decision-making in next-generation agricultural systems.

Fruits and vegetables are very important food commodities not only in developing country like India but all over the world. India, which is the most densely populated country in Asia continent, is still struggling to achieve self-sufficiency to feed about 135 crores people. For this purpose, fruits and vegetables have got their specific importance to provide a balance and healthy diet to the Indian people. Therefore, the reduction of post-harvest loss of fruit and vegetables is a complementary means for increasing production. It may not be necessary to considerably step up the production of fruits and vegetables with the growing demand if the post-harvest loss is reduced to a great extent. The cost of preventing losses after harvest in general is less than preventing a similar additional amount of fruit and vegetable crop of the same quality

Fruits are important source of Pro-vitamin A and vitamin C. In addition, vegetables also supply fair amount of carbohydrates, protein and energy and add colour, flavour and aroma to human diet. India is one of the largest producers of fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are an important supplement to the human balanced diet as they provide the essential minerals, vitamins and dietary fibre (roughage) for maintaining the tear and wear of the over body. Fresh fruit and vegetables have a short shelf life under ambient conditions of temperature and humidity due to their highly perishable nature. They soon lose their freshness and become subjected to mould and bacterial attack, and consequently decay and become useless as articles of human diet. Fresh fruits and vegetables are valued for their quick sources of available energy. Fresh fruits have high water content (70-96%), varying amount of carbohydrate (3-27%) and fibre (0.2-3.1%) and a low content of protein, fat and minerals. Ideal climatic conditions ensure round the year availability of broad range of fruit and vegetables in large quantities.
