Gerbera (Gerbera jamesonii), a tender, stemless, perennial flowering plant, belongs to family Asteraceae. Gerbera was named in honour of the German botanist and naturalist “Traugott Gerber” who was a friend of Carolus Linnaeus. Gerbera is very popular and widely used as cut flower or as a decorative garden plant. It was discovered in 1878 near Barberton, eastern Transvaal (South Africa), therefore, referred as the Barberton daisy or Transvaal daisy. It is ideal for beds, borders and pots and is the fifth most important cut flower in the world.

Concept of Entrepreneur

An entrepreneur is an economic man who seeks to maximize revenues by identifying and adopting innovations. However, entrepreneurs are willing to take risks and create change by organising human efforts. Entrepreneurs are vital to the country’s economic growth. Entrepreneurial development as a component of economic growth has long been acknowledged.

Starting from the basics, etymologically, the word entrepreneur comes from the French word “entreprendre”, which means “to do something”, and, in the Middle Era, it was originally used in the sense of a person who is active, who gets things done. The study of entrepreneurship reaches back to work in the late 17^th and early 18^th centuries of Irish-French economist Richard Cantillon. “Entrepreneur” is a French word that first appeared in the French dictionary entitled Dictionnaire Universel de Commerce, compiled by Jacques des Bruslons and published in 1723. Richard Cantillon’s 1755 work “Essai sur la nature du commerce en general” changed the entrepreneurial concept. Risk has been used to identify entrepreneurs since ancient times. In India, entrepreneurship means Udyog.

Naturally Greenhouse gases are cover as blanket on the Earth and kept it about 33⁰C warmer than it would be without these gases in the atmosphere. This is called as the “Greenhouse Effect”.

Over the past century, the Earth has increased in temperature by about 0.5⁰C and many scientists believe that this is because of an increase in concentration of the main greenhouse gases viz., carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and fluorocarbons. People are now calling this climate change over the past century the beginning of “Global Warming”.

Introduction

Wide ranging Indian climatic conditions are well suited for boosting production of a variety of horticultural crops (fruits, vegetables, flower/ornamental/medicinal and aromatic crops) which presently hold an important position in the global scenario. Development was at a very low ebb till the Third Five-Year Plan and increased significantly since the Seventh Five Year Plan (Rs.10,000 millions plan outlay). Government of India established National Horticultural Board (NHB) in 1984 and Agriculture and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) in 1986 to facilitate its larger development. The outlay is expected to increase even more in the Tenth Plan. Significant progress has been made in area expansion of different horticultural crops resulting in higher production. Besides, use of modern technologies has also brought about improvement in productivity. More than 50 per cent increase in production is seen in many of the horticulture crops during last one decade.

The efficient planning and implementation of different developmental programs on horticultural crops depends on production parameters like soil suitability, varietals dominance, marketable surplus, marketing channels, post harvest handling practices, cost of cultivation and market availability for sustained production. In addition, information on latest technologies developed by various research organizations on horticultural improvement, production, protection and post-harvest technologies are needed to be collected and made available to the scientists, planners and managers working in the related fields. But the available information on this aspect is scattered and the database is too weak to provide adequate support for developmental strategies. The digitization of comprehensive database on horticultural crops will definitely enhance the pace of increasing the area, production, productivity and promoting industry of horticultural crops that have taken lead in the new millennium with reference to nutritional quality of food and export potential. A strong, well-knit database to support need-based, market-driven and cost-effective horticultural development is imperative. Therefore, under National Agricultural Technology Project (NATP) a Mission Mode Sub-project on “Integrated National Agricultural Resources Information System (INARIS)” has been taken up to evolve a comprehensive computerized data management system on various agricultural resources like crops, animals, fishes and natural resources by harnessing RDBMS and GIS. The Co-operating Center at Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bangalore has developed the “Horticultural Resources Information System” with the objectives of (i) integrating existing databases in horticulture, (ii) designing and developing a comprehensive database in horticulture and (iii) developing resource maps of major horticultural crops in the country by integrating attribute and spatial data through GIS. In addition to simple storage and retrieval it will include other functions such as manipulation and dissemination of information to various users. This database will be integrated with 13 other Co-operating Centers dealing with different agricultural resources through a virtual private network (VPN). The Lead Center at Indian Agricultural Statistics Research Institute, New Delhi provide warehouse facility with a capability to analyze the data variously and provide report as cubes, tables and graphs to form a national database to cater to the needs of the users through a website. The facility of retrieving information as value-added maps using GIS will also be built in.

Introduction

The natural resources of arid regions particularly soil and water are limited and is often in a delicate environmental balance. Desert encroachment due to lack of conservation planning, and the dangers of destroying or depleting beyond recovery these productive resources, are evident at present time and may be disastrous if development is based on short term expediency rather than long term stability.

The arid zone of India is spread over 38.7 million ha area, out of which 31.7 m ha in under hot arid region and 7 m ha under cold region. The hot arid region occupies major part of north-western India (28.57 m ha) and occurs in small pockets (3.13 m ha) in south India. The north-western arid region occurs between 22o30' and 32o05' N latitudes and from 68o05' to 75o45' E longitudes, covering western part of Rajasthan (19.6 m ha, 69%), north-western Gujarat (6.22 m ha, 21%) and 2.75 m ha (10%) in south-western part of Haryana and Punjab (Faroda et al. 1999). Rainfall distribution is highly uneven over space and time (CV>60%). The region receives low rainfall (<100 mm to 500 mm), has high evapotranspiration and high temperature regime (Rao and Singh 1998). Groundwater is deep and often brackish. The western-central area is devoid of drainage system and surface water resources are meager (Fig. 20.1). Due to low and erratic rainfall, replenishment of water resources is also very poor. The entire Rajasthan state is being categorized as the driest state and water scarce (having per capita water availability below 1000 m3 year-1) since 1991 in the country. Increasing pollution by industrial units, big and small, unregulated mining and even over-extraction of water from deep wells also add to the water quality problem in number of districts. Apple (Malus pumila, though erroneously and commonly called Malus domestica) is a deciduous plant and considered to be the world’s one of the oldest fruit crops. The tree originated from Central Asia where M. sieversii, wild ancestor of cultivated apple is still found today. It is one of the most important table fruits of the world and excels other fruits in having prolonged keeping quality and wide variety of flavour and taste. It is a highly remunerative crop and is grown in all temperate regions of the world. In India apple is mostly grown in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and some parts of Arunachal Pradesh.

Globally, the tech revolution in agriculture is a game-changer. Yields per hectare surged 21% from 2000 to 2018, a trend powered by precision agriculture utilizing drones, sensors and AI. This data-driven approach slashes fertilizer and water use by 15% and 30% respectively, saving billions globally (Kumar and Aithal, 2023). Automation through driverless tractors and robotic milking machines boosts farm efficiency by 20%, while e-commerce platforms connect farmers directly to markets, inflating their profit margins by 10%.

The plant variety is related to intellectual property that needs to be protected for controlled commercial unitization for a specified period. New plant varieties development requires scientific skill, knowledge, significant investment of land and specialized equipments. These varieties are cultivated by farmers in their adaptive region. In development of new variety 10 to 15 years are required. If developed variety successfully commercialized on farmer’s field, then the market business is much higher than input investment. The major issue in developed variety that can be easily reproduced by someone without permission of original breeder. Thus, the original breeder deprived for their f inancial benefit. It is, therefore, critical to provide an effective system of plant variety protection, which encourages the development of new varieties of plants thereby benefiting the breeder and society at large. The sustainable and long-term breeding effort for development of new varieties needs encouragement and financial reward for investing time and skills. To secure legal protection of the developed variety breeder needs to obtained exclusive right from government.After establishment of WTO in 1995 under TRIP the right to protect plant varieties become mandatory for signatory country. It has also realised that existence of the private seed industry, the protection of plant varieties become necessity.

In 1952, the classical theory of survey sampling neared completion. In 1952, Horvitz and Thompson created a general theory with an aim to create objective estimations. As Horvitz and Thompson completed the Classical theory, the random sampling strategy was mostly agreed upon. The majority of the great books on sampling were written by numerous authors. (Yates, 1949; Deming, 1950; Hansen, Hurwitz, and Madow 1953; Cochran et al., 1953).

Why Sample?

• Particularly in fisheries, it is impractical to count every single specimen.

• Sampling gives a depiction of an organism's abundance and dispersion.

• A sufficient number of samples must be used to ensure that the results are accurate representations of the condition. Notwithstanding the fact that the sample is considered to be the credible and representative of the population and that the data shows accuracy, the sample may not accurately reflect the system's real population. As a result, sampling introduces a mistake.

• Sampling error is the statistical error showing the difference between the values derived from the sample of a population and the true values of a population parameter when all the units in the population are counted in the same way that the sample is counted.

The integration of bioinoculants and nanoparticles presents a promising strategy for enhancing sustainable agricultural practices, yet significant challenges impede their widespread adoption. Limited awareness among farmers regarding the benefits and applications of these technologies is a critical barrier, emphasizing the need for targeted educational initiatives. Additionally, the high cost of nanoparticle and bioinoculant formulations restricts accessibility, particularly for small-scale farmers. Standardization and quality control protocols are crucial to ensure consistent efficacy, as variability in bioinoculant formulations can compromise their effectiveness. Regulatory frameworks remain complex, further hindering commercialization and large-scale implementation. Environmental concerns are also prevalent, given the potential toxicity of nanoparticles like zinc oxide and silver nanoparticles, which may disrupt soil microbial communities. Despite these challenges, future prospects for bioinoculants and nanoparticles are promising. Integrating these technologies into sustainable farming practices can reduce the reliance on synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, as seen in the use of Azospirillum brasilense encapsulated in chitosan nanoparticles to enhance drought tolerance in maize. Furthermore, the application of Pseudomonas putida encapsulated in alginate nanoparticles has effectively mitigated heavy metal stress in tomato plants. Precision agriculture, employing data analytics and remote sensing, can optimize the targeted delivery of bioinoculants and nanoparticles, maximizing crop productivity and nutrient uptake. However, comprehensive in vivo studies are essential to assess long-term efficacy and environmental impact under field conditions. Heliconia belongs to family Heliconiaceae is popular as ornamental plants and cut flowers because of their brilliant colours and exotic appearance. The genus name “Heliconia” is derived from “Helicon”, a mountain in southern Greece regarded by the ancient Greeks as the home of the Muses, thus suggesting the relationship between these plants and the bananas, genus Musa (Berry and Kress, 1991). Unique features of the Heliconiaceae are (1) medium to large erect herbs rising from underground rhizomes; (2) each erect shoot is composed of a stem and leaves, whereas the stem is made up of an axis covered by overlapping sheathing leaf bases, technically called a pseudostem; (3) inverted flowers and (4) the presence of a single staminode. Heliconia has long been popular horticulturally because of their showy inflorescences. It was so attractive that early explorers of the tropics returned to Europe with several species that became prized green house specimens. Heliconia, grown in nearly all of the tropical regions of the world, including Africa and Asia. In India, heliconia is grown in North-East region and Kerala.

Instrumentation and Advanced Analytical Techniques

    1.    Chromatography is defined as an analytical technique where by a mixture of chemicals may be separated by virtue of their differential affinities for two immiscible phases. One of these, the stationary phase, consists of a fixed bed of small particles with a large surface area, while the other, the mobile phase or “eluant”, is a fluid that moves constantly through, or over the surface of, the fixed phase.

    2.    The chromatogram evaluated qualitatively by determining the Rf or retention factor, for each of the eluted substances.

    3.    The Rf is a measure of that fraction of its total elution time that any compound spends in the mobile phase.

Abstract: Shifting cultivation locally called Jhuming is a part and parcel of tribal life of the North Eastern Hill Region of India and it has direct bearing with their socio-cultural system. It is a boon to the farmers as long as the jhuming cycle is sufficiently longer (10-15 years) as this would not only produce a good crop but also gives sufficient time for ecological restoration and biophysical balance. However, with the increase in population pressure on land the jhuming cycle is getting drastically reduced (3-6 years). As a result of this, soil health is getting degraded and overall ecosystem is in threat. Many important flora and fauna are in the verge of extinction. As we cannot run away from the problem at least thinking about posterity, we have to find a decisive solution immediately. Developing improved methods of jhum cultivation like proper bunding, residue recycling, use of high yielding varieties etc. are few short term options. However long term viable options would be proper land configuration like terraces, water harvesting, agroforestry, adoption of integrated farming system approach and above all education and awareness among the tribal farmers which would help in sustaining the ecosystem of the region.

Introduction

The countries of Asia and the Pacific region accounts for nearly two-thirds of the chronically poor and undernourished in the world. FAO estimates indicate that, by 2010, Asia will still account for about one-half of the world’s malnourished population (FAO 2000). In Asia, poverty has mainly been rural phenomenon and nearly three-fourth of the poor live in rural areas, with large majority of them dependent on natural resources for employment and income. South Asia, which had a poverty incidence of 43 percent (or about 520 million people), contributed about 40 percent of the world’s poor. Development of natural resources thus offers a potentially enormous means of poverty reduction.

In developing countries poverty and environmental deterioration are often viable in proximity to each other, and have led many to infer that a two-way causality exists between human and environmental degradation. Environmental degradation usually occurs when production and consumption activities of growing population irreversibly weaken nature’s recycling capabilities. These economic activities are also attributed to the development of markets, the advent of modern technology, and the spatial integration of inaccessible areas to market systems. In many developing countries, however, environmental degradation such as soil erosion, deforestation and pollution are most visible around poor settlements, leading some policy makers to highlight the direct links between poverty and the environment.

One has to recognize that both poverty and the environment are descriptions of states of human and natural resource attributes and cannot be reduced to simple one-dimensional cause-effect relationships. Apart from conceptual difficulties in modeling linkages, another handicap has been the absence of adequate or reliable data sets on poverty and environment characteristics. The challenge for operational research is exploring how circumstantial evidence and inductive logic can be used to explain the nature of interactions between the two states. Based on nationwide wasteland statistics vis-à-vis state and district wise poverty estimates available with the concerned agencies, this study is one such attempt, and evaluates the incidence of poverty with the backdrop of natural resources degradation and role of institutional interventions with illustrations from India.

ABSTRACT

The Kolanthamamalai hill an offshoot of Kalakadu Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve of Southern Western Ghats is one of the important forest reserves of Tirunelveli District. The physiography of this range differs much from the adjacent portions of Southern Western Ghats of Tamil Nadu state due to its discontinuity, varying altitude, ridges and their height and breadth. The altitude of the hilly rugged terrain ranges from 150 to 300m, with the highest peak being Kolanthamamalai. Field visits were made in the study area to survey and to gather information on medicinal flora. The vegetation of Kolanthamamalai hill is a mixed dry deciduous type characteristic of the high and low altitude of the mountains respectively. Lowland vegetation girdles the base of the mountain on the eastern and southern side of the hills. Along the foot hills vegetation is an open scrub with occasional trees. The low-lying areas and the seasonal watercourses are densely vegetated. The natural barriers, habitat diversity, climate and moderate rainfall have resulted in the development of unique plant diversity.

Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata subsp unguiculata) is widely grown in Africa, Asia and Brazil. The crop is grown on about 7 million ha in warm to hot regions of the world (Rachie, 1985). It acts as a major source of protein (20-30%) for Indian vegetarians. Besides, it contains high carbohydrate. Cowpea is generally rich in lysine and limiting in sulphur amino acids and important for human food and animal feed. The crop is also valuable source of dietary fibre as well as vitamins and minerals including folate, thiamin and riboflavin. Besides this, it can fix about 240 kg ha^-1of atmospheric nitrogen and make available about 6070 kg ha^-1nitrogen for succeeding crops grown in rotation with it (Aikins and Afuakwa, 2008).

The crop is prone to several diseases induced by species of pathogens belonging to various pathogenic groups viz., fungi, bacteria, viruses, nematodes, and parasitic flowering plants, and it constitute one of the most important constraints to the profitable Cowpea production in all agroecological zones. Different diseases like anthracnose, fusarium wilt, bacterial blight, Cowpea mosaic virus (and several other less prominent viruses), cercospora leaf spot, rust and powdery mildew etc are reported to be important disease of the crop. In this chapter detail of these diseases and their integrated management approaches are mentioned.

1. The Invisible Gender

India, as is always said, is primarily an agrarian economy. Despite the forward leaps taken by our society in the different novel and pioneering areas of development, agriculture remains the force that supports rural India. According to the economic survey of 2020-21, the contribution of agriculture to the country’s GDP has increased from 17.8% in 2019-20 to 19.9% in 2020-21. It is a sector that provides almost half of all the employment opportunities available in the world. The rural agricultural workforce all over the world comprises 37 per cent women and in low-income countries, it is as high as 48 per cent. Women also represent close to 50 per cent of the world’s 600 million small-scale livestock managers and about half of the labor force in small-scale fisheries. They also have a highly significant presence in the post-harvest, processing, and small scale value addition sectors also. However, these numbers are pessimistic estimations as the women’s contributions to agriculture are often unpaid labor and therefore their contributions are not fully captured (FAO, 2020).

It is estimated that 85% of the rural women in India work in agriculture yet own only 13% of the land. The modeled estimates of the International Labour Organization (ILO) shows a drop in females employed in agriculture from 74.38% in 2000 to 54.59% in 2019.However, under the cultural backdrop of Indian society, a significant number of women still exist as “invisible contributors.
