Tomato

Tomato, a warm season vegetable, requires a long season to produce a profitable crop. The optimum range of temperature for its cultivation should be 21–24ºC. The mean temperatures below 16ºC and above 27ºC are not desirable. The minimum, optimum and maximum soil temperatures for seed germination are 10º, 30º and 35ºC, respectively. Maximum seed germination occurs at 24ºC. Maximum fruit setting occurs at night temperature of 15-20ºC. Flowers fail to set fruit below 13ºC and beyond 38ºC. Formation of red colour due to lycopene is inhibited when temperature exceeds 32ºC. Lycopene is highest at 21-24ºC, while its production drops off rapidly above 27ºC. Tomato plants are highly susceptible to high rainfall areas if proper drainage is not available.

It is grown in many types of soil from sandy to heavy clay. A well-drained fairly fertile loam soil with a fair moisture-holding capacity is ideal for growing its good crop. It prefers a soil having a pH of 6.0 - 7.0. Application of liming is beneficial if it is cultivated in acid soils.

It can be grown almost round the year. The planting seasons vary from place to place. In northern India, for spring summer crop, it is sown in November and transplanted in second fortnight of January. In area, where frost does occur, it is sown in July-August and transplanted in August-September. In hilly areas, it is sown in March-April and transplanted in April-May.

There is no plant in this world which is uneconomical/not useful. Medicinal plants have been considered as important therapeutic aid for alleviating aliments of human kind. The WHO estimates that 80% of people living in developing countries rely almost exclusively on traditional medicines for their primary health care needs. Aromatic plants are used for essential oils - volatile material extracted from plants or plant parts usually by stream distillation and used in flavours and fragrances for food, soap, detergents, perfumes, lotions etc. Spices are the dry part of a plant such as roots, leaves and seeds which impart to food a certain flavour and pungent stimuli. Spices contain variable amount of fat, protein, carbohydrates, fibres, minerals and vitamins.

All agroforestry systems are characterized by three basic sets of attributes; productivity, sustainability, and adoptability (Nair, 2008).

Productivity: The majority of agroforestry systems, if not all of them, strive to maintain or raise both land productivity and output (of desired commodities). In several aspects, agroforestry may raise production. These include higher yields of related crops, less input use in the cropping system, enhanced labour efficiency, and higher production of tree products.

Sustainability: Agroforestry can achieve and indefinitely maintain conservation and fertility goals by conserving the production potential of the resource base, mainly through the beneficial effects of woody perennials on soils.

Adoptability: Improved or new agroforestry technologies that are introduced into new areas should fit the social as well as environmental characteristics of the land use system for which it is designed and should also confirm to local farming system.

We all are familiar with the word “quality”. If we bring some fruits or vegetables from the market, the other family members will reflect on their quality by making observations such as: fresh or stale, good or bad quality or inferior product, etc. These observations are perceptions of consumers based on the sensory attributes of the fruit or vegetable colour, appearance, touch, smell or taste.

The quality characteristics of food that are acceptable to consumers are comprehended under the term “Food Quality. It includes external factors such as appearance (size, shape, colour, gloss, and consistency); internal factors (chemical, physical, microbiological) and characteristics/ specifications prescribed under the Government laws/standards. If consumer’s perceptions regarding quality of food are not positive he or she either will not purchase the material or will be paying less compared to when the consumer has positive perception about the quality.

In the quest of quality, the dairy business is passing through revolutionary changes and the need for such changes has been very well realized. The leaders have initiated the process of setting vision and are working hard to provide the basic infrastructure with necessary resources. This has become a point of vital importance as the nation has now captured the first rank in milk production globally and is now ready and set to march ahead in the global race for dairy products market. Our country has great potential to export the dairy products such as cheese particularly Mozzarella, Feta, and indigenous products such as ghee, khoa, chhana, paneer, and array of sweets. Food items or dairy products to be traded in the international markets should be manufactured in accordance with global accepted norms and standards. In order to improve the quality of milk and milk products the Government of India is focusing on “Clean Milk Production”. As a dairy technologists and entrepreneurs, we must ensure production of quality products.

The transition from vegetative to floral meristems in higher plants is programmed by the coincidence of internal and environmental signals. The timing of floral transition has a direct impact on reproductive success. One of the most important environmental factors that affect the transition is the change in day length (photoperiod). Classical experiments imply that plants monitor photoperiods in the leaf and transmit that information coded within an elusive signal dubbed florigen to the apex to reprogram development. Recent advances in Arabidopsis research indicate that the core of the day-length measurement mechanism lies in the circadian regulation of CONSTANS (CO) expression and the subsequent photoperiodic induction of the expression of FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT) gene, which might encode a major component of florigen. The florigen paradigm was conceived in photoperiod-sensitive plants; nevertheless, it implies that although it is activated by different stimuli in different flowering systems but the signal is common to all plants. Flowering time, the major regulatory transition of plant sequential development, is modulated by multiple endogenous and environmental factors.

A pesticideis defined as anysubstance intended for preventing, destroying, attracting, repelling or controlling pests including unwanted species of plant, or animals duringthe production, storage,transportation, distributionand processing of the food, agricultural commodities or animal's feed or which may be administered to the animals for the control of ectoparasites. Pesticides include insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, acaricides, nematicides, etc.

According to food and agricultural organization (FAO) 1986, the term pesticidehas been defined as“any substance or mixture of substances intended for preventing or controlling any pest and includes anysubstance or mixture of substances intended for use as plant growth regulator (PGR), defoliant or desiccant. The term excludes fertilizers and antibiotics or other chemicals administered to animals to stimulate their growth or to modify their reproductive behaviour”. Pesticides are the largest group of poisonous substances that are widely broadcast today.

Designing an earthen dam requires the coordinated evaluation of catchment runoff, reservoir capacity, site conditions, foundation properties, expected service life, and the consequences of failure. A selected return period is used to estimate extreme rainfall and runoff, while adequate spillway capacity and freeboard protect the embankment against overtopping. The dam must possess low permeability, stable upstream and downstream slopes, and sufficient resistance to seepage, settlement, erosion, and earthquake forces. This chapter presents design criteria, top width, dam height, side slopes, freeboard, seepage-control components, slope-protection measures, and stability considerations. It also explains procedures needed to create a safe, economical, and functional embankment.

A number of insects infest seeds in storage. These insects infest seeds to fulfill their feed and shelter requirements, which result into qualitative as well as quantitative loss of seeds. Indian climate is very favourable for their multiplication and growth throughout the year. Storage pests move along with commercial products from one area to another and even to different countries in the world. Some adult insects are strong fliers and may spread from one to another place of storage or from source of infestation. Generally, all insects infesting seeds in storage belongs to insect order Coleoptera and Lepidoptera (Table 4.1). Some minor species belong to Pscoptera. These pests cause losses to man by destroying large quantities of grain, corn, legumes (beans, lentils and peas), milled cereal products, flour, bran, macaroni and other paste products, dried fruits, dried vegetables, cheese, nuts, candy and other food materials. They contaminate and thus eliminate for human consumption, far more food than they eat and either cause direct loss or transmit diseases to man and his domestic animals. These insects can be categorized as major or minor pests according to the loss of seeds caused by them. Similarly, on the basis of their feeding behavior, they can be grouped as follows:

Computational crop-disease detection uses machine learning, neural networks and image-processing techniques to provide timely and accurate diagnoses. This chapter presents a complete framework covering agricultural intelligence, disease categories, image acquisition, preprocessing, model training and classification. It examines datasets collected in fields or through drones and considers deployment through mobile devices, cloud platforms and other digital systems. Evaluation measures are introduced for assessing model accuracy and reliability. The chapter also considers limitations caused by insufficient or poor-quality data and variation in field conditions. Future directions include multimodal data integration and explainable models that provide transparent recommendations for sustainable crop protection and improved food security.

Multipurpose trees and shrubs are defined as all woody perennials that are purposefully grown to provide more than one significant contribution to the production and/or service functions of a land-use system that they occupy. In agroforestry systems, different species of trees and shrubs can be planted with many types of crops in a variety of patterns. Thus, it is required to know about the methods of propagation and nursery raising, planting and other silvicultural management practices along with the diverse uses of multipurpose trees and shrubs of tropical and subtropical areas before their selection for forestry and agroforestry activities. Mangium (Acacia Mangium)

Acacia mangium is a single-stemmed evergreen tree that grows to 25-35 m in height and up to 60 cm in diameter. The bole is usually straight, often fluted near the base, free of branches for up to half its height. Mangium is native to Australia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. However, it tolerates varied site conditions and has adaptability to different planting objectives. Mangium shows most vigorous growth on well-drained, fertile soils in high rainfall areas in the humid tropics. It is valued for its rapid growth and has been planted throughout the humid tropics and is a major plantation species in the Asia Pacific. Provenances from Papua New Guinea consistently show better growth in height and diameter.

The nervous system in animals is a complex group of highly specialized cells capable of collecting and transmitting information in response to external stimuli via receptors and highly specialized sensory organs. It aids in the regulation of muscle coordination, the release of hormones, neurotransmitters, and other chemical mediators, all of which facilitate numerous bodily activities.
The nervous system is divided into two systems: the central nervous system (CNS), which includes the brain and spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system. Trees have been used in cropping systems since the beginning of agriculture. Factors which influence the colonization and life cycle of VAM fungi have important bearing on the extent to which they may benefit their host. As we move closer to using mycorrhizal fungi to increase growth and productivity of different plant communities, a thorough understanding of the factors which influence their survival, germination, root colonization an d sporulation will be critical. Seasons, physico-chemical characters of the soil, agronomic practices, plant protection chemicals, pollutants and genotypic characters of the host may affect VAM fungi and their potentiality to colonize and provide benefit to the host. In view of this, the effect of such factors on the VA mycorrhizal symbiosis and its benefit to diverse plant communities has been extensively investigated worldover.

Abstract

Kaliasaur landslide located 18km from Srinagar on the NH-58 in Uttrakhand Himalayas has been repeatedly sliding for the last over 5 – 6 decades totally paralyzing the transport operations in the region and causing beeline of issues not only for the people living in the hilly state but also the tourists and the pilgrims. The study of Geosystems & geodynamics, large scale micro zonation and geotechnical studies using RMR and SMR techniques show that the slide is located in high hazard zone and follow the pattern of wedge and planar failures with vulnerable zone of factor of safety. The toe erosion by the acutely turning Alaknanda river and the mitigation measures in the form of slope disturbance in the upslope part rather protecting slide, has been responsible for the recurring slides. The study further revealed that excessive rainfall is also a triggering parameter and the crown part is widening. On the basis of the studies, mitigation measures have also been brought out.

The process of vaccine development involves numerous stages from research, discovery, innovation, formulation, testing, mass production, logistics, deployment and administering the vaccine to the target population. The COVID-19 pandemic expedited the endeavour to develop vaccine worldwide that is unparalleled in history. In addition to the steps that were similar during the usual vaccine development process, it called for stronger collaborative teamwork with stricter deadlines during the pandemic due to the emergency situation that built up everywhere (in its spread as well as severity). Research was expedited, potential candidate vaccines were discovered and the proofs of concept were designed that paved the way for pre-clinical efficacy testing. Multiple-step clinical trials to ascertain that the vaccines were effective and safe at least for ‘emergency use’ in human subjects were carried out swiftly. The emergency usage regulatory approval and recommending the usage pattern involved accelerated review procedures. It immediately followed rapid scaling-up for increased production in order to meet the need to save as many human lives as possible across the globe. The approved vaccines were simultaneously evaluated for safety through dedicated pharmacovigilance systems. The future of vaccine development shall also focus on improving the worldwide access to vaccines, managing the virus variants and streamlining mass vaccination campaigns.
