Introduction

A symposium organized by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) in 1966 and International Organization of Biological Control (IOBC) in 1967, felt the need for the development of a new concept called “Integrated control” which was later replaced by “Integrated Pest Management”. The origin of IPM was necessary after the serious failure of the chemical age which started in the 1940’s. The pesticides were used as the only tactic to completely annihilate the pests from the crop ecosystem, which did miraculously decreased the pests and increased the production of the crop extensively, but they failed to realize the balance of life, by nature and by virtue of the selection pressure pests started developing resistance against all kind of pesticides being dumped on them.While the pests were getting resistant, the dumped pesticides were accumulating in the environment and biomagnifying inside the bodies of animal (WHO, 1990; Alewu & Nosiri, 2011; Eskenazi et al., 1999). The indiscriminate use of pesticides led to the significant health hazard to the humans (WHO, 1990; Alewu & Nosiri, 2011; Sanborn et al., 2007; Mnifet al; 2011; Semchuk et al., 1992; Goad et al., 2004; McKinlay et al., 2008; Gasnier et al., 2009; Lin et al., 2015; Waddell et al., 2001), reproductive malfunction in male (Jamal et al., 2015), nervous system (Jaga and Dharmani, 2003; Rosenstock et al., 1991; Wesseling et al., 2002; Eskenazi et al., 2006), cardiovascular system (Hung et al., 2015) and ultimately death (WHO, 1990; Gunnell et al., 2007). From the lessons acquired of the hazards, the concept of IPM proposed the concept of “pest eradication” was replaced with “pest management”. There are more than 64 definitions of IPM but the most accepted one came from FAO (1967) which defined IPM as “a system in context with associated environment and the population dynamics of pest species, utilizes all suitable techniques and methods in as compatible manner as possible and maintains the pest populations at level below those causing economic injury”. IPM decreased the pest pressure of the crop and increased the productivity of the crop and income of the farmers. IPM is a complex approach that advocates the integration of several components such as physical, mechanical, biological, legal, ecological and chemical tactics, in a compatible manner in a complete ecological set up, so that natural mortality has a role in checking the pest population building up above economic injury level (EIL).

The term ‘nanotechnology’ is derived from the Greek word “nano,” which means dwarf. The development of nanotechnology is closely linked to a historic statement made by Nobel Prize winner Richard Phillips Feynman “There is plenty of room at the bottom”. Designing, characterizing, manufacturing and applying structures, devices and systems by manipulating their size and shape at the nanoscale scale is known as nanotechnology. A nanometer, abbreviated as nm, is one billionth of a meter, or 1×10-9 meters. Nanoparticles are structures with sizes between 1 to 100 nanometers. Nanotechnology may be very helpful in many areas of science and industry by utilizing the special properties of nanoparticles. Understanding and manipulating matter at the nanoscale is of special interest to researchers in the domains of science, medicine, agriculture and industry since materials at this scale frequently exhibit radically different properties from those at larger scales. Nanoparticles find extensive applications in the fields of biotechnology, electronics, textiles, biomedicine, communication technology, biotechnology and renewable energy. In the field of agriculture, innovative nanomaterials have demonstrated great promise for the creation of hybrid crop varieties, new high-efficient agrochemicals for crop protection and nutrition and new crop types through genetic engineering. Additionally, the use of nanomaterials enhances the production of nutraceuticals, the efficiency of pesticides and fertilizers, food processing, packaging, food safety and plant nutrition. It also reduces environmental pollution.

A. SUITABILTY OF CLIMATE FOR FRUIT PLANTS

Climate refers to an average condition of the atmosphere over a long period, whereas, the term weather refers to the current and temporary atmospheric conditions of an area. Climate is the principal factor for optimum vegetative and reproductive growth of plants. The success or failure of crop in a particular locality depends upon the prevailing climatic conditions. In our environment it is fundamental force which includes various components of climate like temperature, humidity, wind, light, rainfall, hail and frost. These factors should be taken care of for successful fruit production. All cultivated crops including fruit crops have certain natural threshold limits of the climatic parameters for their normal growth. The important climatic components which affect fruit crop production are given below:

The impetus for the development of aquaculture extends beyond food production. Aquaculture can help to diversify rural employment opportunities, reduce trade deficits, reduce pressure on living marine resources and rebuild depleted wild stocks (FAO, 2000b). The rapid development of coastal aquaculture, however, is now an area of critical international concern owing to the immense role it plays in transforming coastal landscapes and livelihoods. With the advent of new technology and rising global demand for fish and fish products, the basic character of aquaculture in coastal communities is changing dramatically. Traditional, low production forms of aqua-culture catering to local households are being supplanted by modern, resource intensive high production systems that cater to international markets. This restructuring has generated widespread concern over the contribution of aquaculture to the degradation of coastal ecosystems and the social and economic costs that are being passed on to the rural poor leading to growing inequality (Lakshmi and Rajagopalan, 2000).

There is large-scale conversion of wetlands including mangroves for other uses despite their valuable functioning, products and attributes. Normal market forces always favour the conversion of mangroves (and other wetlands) to other uses and ; many alternative uses of natural mangroves in tropical and sub-tropical coastal areas have produced disappointing economic results due to low and declining productivity (eg. abandoned shrimp ponds due to unscientific shrimp farming in formerly mangrove areas) (Dixon and Lal, 1997).

The large-scale destruction of mangroves for shrimp ponds has adversely affected the productivity of nearby fisheries and consequently the economic conditions of traditional fishermen households. The conversion of mangrove forest into shrimp ponds in the coastal areas in Asia including India is nothing but redistribution of income from poor fishermen to rich investors, mostly non-fishermen marine product industrialists and merchants. (Maler, 1998). The destruction of mangrove forests in India, China, Thailand and other Asian countries is synonymous with the destruction of fishing grounds of the traditional fishermen leading to their occupational displacement.

In a commercial horticultural enterprise, if the product is not marketed properly, safely and beneficially, all the investment, inputs, hard work goes in vain. Basically every commodity that is produced should reach the consumer and marketing is all about how the commodity reaches the consumer. There is no fun of producing any commodity if it does not reach the consumer.

The word market has been derived form Latin word “marcatus” meaning merchandise, where people conduct business. Market therefore refers to place where goods/ commodity and services are bought and sold.

Marketing is a sum total of business activities through which the goods and services are either bought or sold. Cundiff and Still defined marketing as “the business process by which products are matched with markets and through which transfer of ownership are affected.

Country has vast network of 20 river basins with utilizable surface and groundwater resources of 1123 billion cubic meter (BCM). With the rising population, the per capita availability of water in India has declined from 5178 m³/year in 1951 to 1441 m³/year in 2015. About 60% of Indian population have per capita water availability close to or lower than the water scarcity threshold of 1000 m³/year. The per capita water availability will further decline to 1139 m³/year with increase in population. On the demand side, the gross water requirement for all users in India is expected to grow up to 1447 BCM in 2050 (CWC, 2010, GoI, 2015). With the massive financial investment by the governments and the farmers, net irrigated area in the country increased from 20.85 million hectare (Mha) in 1950-51 to 68.38 Mha in 2014-15 (DES, 2019). Although India is a world leader in irrigation infrastructure, still half of the total cropped area (51%) remains rainfed. Oil spills are defined as the unintentional release of liquid petroleum hydrocarbons into the environment, predominantly impacting marine ecosystems. This form of pollution, often caused by human activities, can also occur onterrestrial landscapes. Spills typically result from the discharge of crude oilfrom sources such as tankers, offshore platforms, drilling rigs, and wells, aswell as from refined petroleum products like gasoline and diesel (Smith etal., 2019). While such incidents are primarily accidental, they may arise fromvarious circumstances, including inadequate storage or poor maintenance,leading tocontainerleaks. Historically, one of the earliest documented oil spillsoccurred in 1907 in Batum, a region then part of the Russian Empire (moderndayBatumi, Georgia). This incident, involving a collision between an oil-ladenship and another vessel in the Black Sea, marked the beginning of recorded oilspill events, though historical records from that time remain limited (Johnsonet al., 2021). The consequences of oil spills are profound, affecting both theenvironment and the economy. On the ocean’s surface, oil disrupts aquaticecosystems by blocking sunlight penetration and depleting dissolved oxygenlevels, which are vital for marine life. Crude oil compromises the insulating andwaterproofing properties of fur and feathers, leading to hypothermia and deathin oil-coated birds and marine mammals. Additionally, ingesting oil can causeseveretoxicity, while damage to habitats and reproductive systems often delaysthe long-term recovery of affected species. Coastal vegetation, particularly inecosystems such as saltwater marshes and mangroves, is also highly vulnerable

Plants are the principal producers of phytochemicals, which are compounds with biological activity. Plants serve as the primary source of many active compounds in the pharmaceutical business. Their pharmacological character istics make them useful in the treatment of fungal and bacterial infections, as well as degenerative conditions such as diabetes and cancer that progress over time. Pharmacologically, it has specific effects on human health, including anti-inflammatory properties, antiallergic, antioxidant compounds, antimicrobial, antifungal, antispasmodic, chemopreventive, hepatic-protective, hypolipidemic, neuroprotective, hypotensive, antiaging, bone density loss, DNA damage, cancer, and heart diseases.

Gypsophila is herbacaeous annual or perennial flowering plant belongs to family Caryophyllaceae. It contains several ornamental species of which Gypsophila paniculata L. is the only species used as a cut flower (Zvi et al., 2008) and it is applied as filler in flower arrangements (Jones, 1995 and Rehman, 2002). Gypsophila derived from “gypson” meaning chalk and “phylos” meaning lover, an etymology which alludes to its preference for calcareous soils (Vettory et al., 2013). Mainly found in temperate or warm-temperate regions in the Northern Hemisphere, best developed in the Mediterranean region and Near East (Ataslar et al., 2009 and Cronquist, 1981). It is a perennial plant often grown commercially as an annual crop. Root is rich source of triterpine saponins (Henry, 1993, Hostettmann, 1995 and Gevrenova et al., 2010) which are used for commercially in medicines, detergents, adjuvents and cosmetics (Hostettmann, 1995, Tschesche and Wulff, 1973 and Gevrenova et al., 2010).

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a space-based navigation system that provides location and time information in all weather conditions, anywhere on or near the Earth where there is an unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites. The system provides critical capabilities to military, civil, and commercial users around the world. The United States government created the system, maintains it, and makes it freely accessible to anyone with a GPS receiver. The US began the GPS project in 1973 to overcome the limitations of previous navigation systems, integrating ideas from several predecessors, including a number of classified engineering design studies from the 1960s. The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) developed the system, which originally used 24 satellites. It became fully operational in 1995. Roger L. Easton, Ivan A. Getting and Bradford Parkinson of the Applied Physics Laboratory are credited with inventing it.
 
Advances in technology and new demands on the existing system have now led to efforts to modernize the GPS and implement the next generation of GPS Block IIIA satellites and Next Generation Operational Control System (OCX). Announcements from Vice President Al Gore and the White House in 1998 initiated these changes. In 2000, the U.S. Congress authorized the modernization effort, GPS III. In addition to GPS, other systems are in use or under development. The Russian Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) was developed contem-poraneously with GPS, but suffered from incomplete coverage of the globe until the mid-2000s. There are also the planned European Union Galileo positioning system, China’s BeiDou Navigation Satellite System, the Japanese Quasi-Zenith Satellite System, and India’s Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System.

The concept emerged again when computers were connected to tremendous networks to create education and research cantered on creating digital libraries accessible to anybody all over the World. Terms like "virtual library", "electronic library", "library without walls”,and "digital library" have been used to characterize this broad concept (Cleveland, n.d.). Digital Libraries are enormous collections of organized information resources. Elegant “Digital Library” software can enable everyone to perceive, organize, develop, and disseminate new information collection.Libraries have long been seen as safeguards of information, having developed over centuries from private repositories of manuscripts to community centres teeming with activity and education. This evolution has accelerated in the digital age, forcing libraries to negotiate the challenging flows of digital evolution.

The problem soils are those which, due to its land or soil characteristics, cannot be economically used for the cultivation of crops without adopting proper reclamation measures. 
Classification of  Problem Soils:  The problem soils are divided into 3 groups. 
    ·    Highly Eroded Soils 
    ·    Saline and Alkali Soils 
    ·    Acid Soils 
Highly Eroded Soils
These soils are called ‘Usar’ in U.P., ‘Kallar or Thur’ in Punjab and ‘Luni’ in Rajasthan. In India, area under saline alkali soils is 7.0 mha. When the chloride (Cl), sulphate (SO₄^2-), carbonate (CO^₃2-) and bicarbonate(HCO₃-) salts of sodium (Na⁺), calcium (Ca²⁺) and magnesium (Mg²⁺) are increased in the soil, the soil become saline and alkaline. On the basis of amount of soluble salts, average quantity of exchangeable Na and pH, they are classified into 3 groups

10.1 Introduction

Grain legumes such as chickpea, pigeonpea, cowpea, field pea , lentil, ,  and Phaseolus beans are the principal source of dietary protein among vegetarians, and are an integral part of daily diet in several forms worldwide. They are an important component of cropping systems to maintain soil fertility because of their ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen, extract water and nutrients from the deeper layers of the soil as compared to cereals, and add organic matter into the soil through leaf drop. However, grain legumes are mainly grown under rainfed conditions and the productivity levels are quite low mainly because of severe losses due to insect pests and diseases.  Average grain yield of pulses (0.86 t/ha) is only about one-fourth the average yields of cereals (3.54 t/ha).  Production and productivity of grain legumes is constrained by several biotic and abiotic factors, and suffer an average of 31.9 to 69.6% loss in crop productivity due to insects, diseases, drought, weeds,  and soil fertility. Pod borers (Helicoverpa and Maruca), Fusarium wilts, viral diseases, Ascochyta blight and Botrytis gray mold (Chen et al., 2011).
