The history of the pregnancy test is a meaningful history embedded in magic, myth, politics, and science. From ancient Egyptian to modern times, the pregnancy test holds a cultural omnipresence that forces women to confront their fertility, femininity, and their future. Today we know that a pregnancy test that detects the human hormone known as human chorionic gonadatropin (hCG) offers the quickest and most accurate result for determining pregnancy. HCG is secreted by the placenta after the fertilized egg implants in the uterus and can be detected in both urine and blood. Urine pregnancy tests are convenient for home use, but a doctor may also opt to test blood as it provides a quantitative hCG number. Both methods are highly accurate and common. Pregnancy tests, however, were not always so accurate or so culturally accepted.
 
The diagnosis of pregnancy requires a multifaceted approach using three main diagnostic tools. These are (a) history and physical examination, (b)laboratory evaluation, and (c) ultrasonography. Currently, physicians may use all of these tools to diagnose pregnancy at early gestation and to help rule out other pathologies.

ABSTRACT

Echinacea purpurea (L.) Moench. is a medicinal and nutraceutically important herb of American origin, extended its distribution to other parts of the globe in subtropical and temperate environment. This species is known for various biological properties such as antimicrobial, immuno-stimulatory and anti-inflammatory properties due to the presence to several bioactive compounds loaded in the form of phenylpropanoids, flavonoids, terpenoids, lipids, nitrogenous compounds, carbohydrates and others such as ascorbic acid, sitosterol, linoleic acid, cyanidin glycosides and sesquiterpene esters in different quantities. Published data reveals that its major chemical constituents possess anti-anxiety, anti-depression, cytotoxicity, anti-infective and anti-mutagenicity properties. Besides, plants respond to abiotic and climatic signals that are responsible for various adaptive responses at the cellular level and vary with ecosystem in which the species grows. It may behave differently in different ecological climates, thereby, modifying their gene expressions, and this reveals that the plant growth and the adaptability are mainly affected by microclimatic factors. Experimental trials conducted to collect data on growth phenology in relation to crop-weather interaction and investigated result is presented in this research. Studies on chemical evaluation of E. purpurea under two constrasting environment, subtropical and temperate climate, with reference to cichoric acid and chlorogenic acid undertaken for this plant is also presented. Future studies in relation to the application of biotechnological interventions and chemical evaluation at different time scale would be a great contribution to the science for this species as it has the tremendous potentials which may lead to development of various nutraceuticals and value added products in future for human health and medicines.

Overpopulation in humans and street dogs to some extent is a global problem of significant magnitude, with grave implications for the future. The overpopulation of dogs and cats is becoming an increasing concern in most countries of the world. As the global human population explodes so to do the staggering numbers of many best friends. Not only does this overpopulation cause millions of deaths each year and immeasurable levels of suffering in unwanted animals, these animals can cause significant risks to human health.

Stray animals particularly dogs are source of dreaded diseases like rabies and other zoonoses, resulting in thousands of deaths annually. The management of wild and domestic animal population is step towards controlling the situation and fertility control techniques play a role in this. However, such technology is still in its infancy is yet to be used on a large scale.

Advancements made in immunology and improved methods for the isolation of antigens specific reproductive system have paved the way for the development of antifertility vaccines in the past two decades. These vaccines are generally based on their ability block an indispensable step in the reproductive process.

Introduction

In agriculture and public health sectors, a variety of pesticides are still in uses that are toxic chemicals and having broad-spectrum actions. They kill target species but also harm the ecosystem seriously by affecting desirable organisms, thus, badly impairing prey-predator relationship. Most of these pesticides are persistent or non-biodegradable and hence exhibit biological magnification by accumulating at higher concentration in the organism, which are on the top of the food chain. The other drawbacks of repeated use of pesticides are eradication of natural enemies of pests, increased level of pesticide residues in soil, water, food and fodder crops, resistance of pests to pesticides and resurgence of minor pests in addition to the environmental pollution. It is clear that once used pesticide may persist, somewhere causing serious harm to the mankind and his ecosystem.

The increasing incidence of pesticide harms is fueling the need for new pesticides, which are toxicologically safe, more selective and efficacious and environment-friendly. Now the natural compounds, thus, have increasingly become the focus of those interested in discovery of pesticides. Tens of thousands of secondary products of plants have been identified and there are estimates that hundreds of thousands of these compounds exist. There is growing evidence that most of these compounds are involved in the interaction of plants with other species-primarily the defense of the plants from plant pests. Thus, these secondary compounds represent a large reservoir of chemical structures with biological activity. This resource is largely untapped for use as pest management agents^3, 4. The extraction of such chemicals from plants and derivatives of potent compounds are being encouraged all over the world under the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approaches. The natural compounds and their synthetic derivatives are more selective in action, completely biodegradable and environment-friendly. In short, natural ways of pests control have already been established and are receiving much attention these days.

The major non-mulberry silkworms include the following

1.    Tasar silkworm Tasar silkworm is wild. Larva of tasar silkworm spins a ring like structure around the twig and a long peduncle before constructing the cocoon. Cocoons are large, thick and pedunculate. Cocoons are referred as ‘Hens’s eggs’. They are made of a single unbroken filament and hence are reelable. Tasar silkworm is bi/ tri/ tetra/ pentavoltine. This silk is brown colored silk. Monia or Mauni vessel, a palm leaved vessel is used to rear tasar silkworm in olden days.

a)    Indian Tropical Tasar, Antheraea mylitta (Saturniidae: Lepidoptera) This silkworm commonly found in tropical India. It is polyphagous and feeds on a number of food plants. Its principal host plants are asan (Terminalia tomentosa), arjun (T.arjuna) and Sal (Shorea robusta). Secondarily it feeds on Ber (Zizyphus sp.) The cocoons are grey white, tough and pedunculate.

Turf is an English word, which traces its origin to India from the Sanskrit word “Darbha” means “tuft of grass” or “Kusha” in hindi. Kusha has been mentioned numerous ties even in Hind mythologies (Turgeon, 1985). Turf, is a grass which is smooth, has quality texture and a soothing colour surface that is used in the golf courses, lawns, fields, nurseries, gardens, etc. Turf is a piece of earth of about 5 cm thickness with grass thickly grown over it. Turfgrass has become increasingly important in today’s society as people’s needs increase for recreation, comfort and aesthetics. Turfgrasses are considered as major component of landscape industry which provides aesthetic value. They provide arena for various functional, recreational and social activities.

Turfgrasses enhance the appearance of land and increase the utility of sports fields, lawns, parks, golf courses and other greenbelt areas in and around urban as well as sub urban centres. They improve the environment of urban centres by reducing erosion, temperatures, noise, dust and glare. And, turfgrasses improve the safety of sports fields and playgrounds by adding resiliency to the playing surface. Turfgrasses are increasingly being used by National Highway Authority of India for reducing dust pollution and decreasing vehicle glare by planting on central verge and sides. Only turfgrasses are used by airport authorities for planting besides runway. The grasses being of perennial nature also help in carbon sequestration thus helping combat climate change. The grasses which grow well on sandy soil will help to reduce the dust and control erosion and dust pollution on river banks.

The turfgrass industry is growing rapidly due to strong demand for residential and commercial property development, rising affluence, and the environmental and aesthetic benefits of turfgrass in the urban landscape. Increased area under aesthetic and utility turfs is mainly because of increasing awareness about the sports, degrading environment and the increase in real estate value. The economic value of the turfgrass industry in India is yet to be determined as there is no single government agency handling or collecting the authentic data on turfgrass cover, use or import. All the agencies dealing with turfgrasses are either private companies, nurseries or corporates. But, according to the scarce data gathered by golf associations, sports experts and Association of Indian Nurserymen, turfgrass industry covers an area of more than 30000 acres, in which around 6000 acre is under turfgrass cultivation (sod production). States leading in turfgrass cultivation and marketing are Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Maharashtra, etc. The total number of international cricket grounds in India are 50 and 8 are under construction, more than 520 domestic cricket grounds and athletic fields are also in operation. Indian turfgrass industry is growing around 10 per cent annually. Landscape business contributes 2-3 per cent of total construction and turf has 50 per cent of landscape business.

According to the United Nations (UN, DESA 2019) the world population will reach around 9.7 billion by 2050. The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has predicted that the world food grain production must increase by 70% by the year 2050 to feed this ever-growing population (Bernard et al., 2017). United Nations World Population Prospects (2022) also predicted the same (Fig 1). However, it is a matter of great concern that the global food grain production has not increased to any significant level (Fig 2) in the past 15 years. As seen in Fig 2, the global food grain production trend has reached a plateau. The main reason behind this fact is the degradation of this valuable natural resource (soil) beyond the tolerance limit due to anthropogenic activities such as imbalanced fertiliser use with the application being largely skewed in favour of nitrogen (N) fertilisers. As per the available data from 2020-21, in nutrient terms, India consumes a total of 32.5 million tonnes (Mt) of fertilisers swhich are distributed over a stable net cultivated area of 141 million hectares (Mha) (Singh et al., 2022). Associated with this is the expenditure of a huge amount of energy for producing these fertilisers, which principally comes from fossil fuel burning, pumping a gigantic quantity of groundwater to solubilise these fertilisers and so on. Not only nitrogen, but the usage of phosphatic and potassic fertilisers has also witnessed an upsurge in the last 50 years (Fig 3).

The tale of modern humans is a captivating narrative that begins around 200,000 years ago, marked by the practices of gathering and hunting wild animals. The advent of domestication heralded a new era, paving the way for diverse human societies, cultures, and traditions in what is known as the Neolithic transition. Domestication, an evolutionary process driven by genetic changes through artificial selection for human-beneficial traits
and natural selection in captivity over numerous generations, reshaped the relationship between humans and animals. This intricate dance of evolution, genetics, and human ingenuity gave rise to an array of species adapted to human care and companionship. Fitness, in this context, refers to an animal’s ability to thrive in close quarters with humans, conspecifics, and other animals, consume readily available food, breed successfully in captivity, and elicit human care in an anthropogenic setting. This adaptation process led to phenotypes characterized by reduced “fight or flight” responses, increased social tolerance, and less selectivity, enabling efficient use of available resources. Traits such as early sexual maturity, less seasonality in breeding, and, occasionally, pedomorphism—the retention of juvenile, playful behavior into adulthood—further illustrate the transformative effects of domestication.For terrestrial animals, three primary domestication routes have been identified: the commensal pathway, the prey pathway, and the direct route. In the commensal pathway, animals played a significant role in their domestication. Attracted by human waste, they initially settled in artificial environments, eventually forming mutually beneficial relationships with humans. Species such as the chicken (Gallus domesticus), cat (Felis catus), and dog (Canis familiaris) followed this pathway.

Human being is dependent on nature and natural resources to combat diseases from time immemorial. Ayurveda describes the use of traditional herbs in medicinal preparations in ancient India. Such types of evidences are there in classical Chinese and Greek records also. Nowadays, modern tools are used to identify and purify the active principle from the herbal composition having the therapeutic effect. Bioinformatics tools are often used to screen the drug efficacy of natural products. Using computational and Bioinformatics tools, the efficacy of lead molecules can be screened. Moreover, drug targets can be identified using Bioinformatics and proteomics approach. QSAR and molecular docking tools are used to study the probable activity and mode of action of drug molecule. This approach has minimized the cost and time involved in the drug discovery process.

Animal husbandry has always been an integral part of Indian civilization and our country possesses rich biodiversity of animal genetic resources, which are spread over diverse agro-climatic regions. These resources have been developed by our ancestors over several generations and have acquired special attributes like remarkable adaptability to environment, management conditions and genetic resistance to most tropical diseases besides survival on poor quality of feed and fodder. In spite of multiple threats of change, replacement, degradation and extinction, this biodiversity of farm animals comprises of 30 well-described breeds of cattle, 10 of buffaloes, 20 of goats, 40 of sheep, 8 of camel, 6 of horses, 20 of poultry besides large number of variants of native ponies, pig, donkey, yak and mithun. This mega-diversity is not accidental, nor it is purely natural, rather, it is the outcome of thousands of years of deliberate selection and planned exposure to a range of natural conditions. The description of various breeds of most economically important species of livestock viz. cattle, buffalo, goat and sheep and their genetic improvement is as follows:

The nucleic acids are the molecular depots that are responsible for continuity of life by transfer of hereditary information from one generation to next. The sequence of nitrogenous bases containing programmed instruction determines the structure of every cell constituent and eventually every protein. In 1869, Friedrich Miescher, Swiss chemist, isolated an unknown phosphate-rich substance from pus cells named as nuclein, which was quite different from other organic substances like carbohydrate, protein, and fat. Altmann in 1899 ascertained that the nuclein also had some acidic characteristics and changed its name to ‘nucleic acid’. Later, nucleic acid was also isolated from salmon sperm nuclei as DNA-protaminecomplex. In 1953, James D.Watson and Francis H.C. Crick constructed the model of three-dimensional double helix structure of the DNA molecule which could successfully explain DNA replication.

Soil fertility is a key factor in successful crop production measures the ability of the soil to supply nutrients to plants. Soil fertility and fertilisers are closely related concepts. Soil fertility acts as a "SOURCE" from which plants can absorb nutrients for maximum yield, while manure acts as a "SOURCE" from which we can continuously absorb various nutrients and also add to the soil. Plant genetic resources (PGRS) encompasses everything that is on the earth related to the plants which are beneficial to mankind (Appazov,2008). So, it is the basic raw material for crop improvement (Somsenet al., 2002). In the present regime of transgenic crops, you can have ‘designer crops’- crops of your willingness (Wisner et al., 2001). From the heritage of mankind to the sovereign rights of the states this is the path that PGRs have traversed, earlier before CBD (Conventional Biological Diversity)(Chakraborty et al., 2018) PGRs were considered as a heritage of mankind freely available to everybody but after signing that they became the sovereign rights of the states with sovereign rights of the nation (Brahmiet al., 2015). In such a scenario where states have their rights on those plants’ genetic wealth, protection becomes very important (Clevelandet al., 1997). DNA fingerprinting is one of the technologies which can facilitate that protection (Wanget al., 2019).Rapeseed-mustard (Brassica spp.) is a vital oilseed crop cultivated extensively in India and other parts of the world (Kumaret al., 2008). It plays a crucial role in ensuring edible oil security and contributes significantly to the agricultural economy(Pahariyaet al., 2007). The genetic diversity within rapeseed-mustard species is a key factor in improving yield potential, disease resistance, and oil quality through breeding programs (Chandet al., 2021). However, accurately identifying and characterizing varieties is a challenge due to phenotypic similarities, environmental influences, and potential genetic erosion(Chhikaraet al., 2024). To address these challenges, DNA fingerprinting has emerged as a powerful molecular tool for precise varietal identification, genetic purity assessment, and germplasm conservation (Hosseinpouret al., 2024).DNA fingerprinting involves the use of molecular markers to generate unique genetic profiles of plant varieties, enabling breeders and researchers to differentiate between closely related cultivars (Singhet al., 2022; Singhet al., 2014). This technology is instrumental in breeding programs, ensuring the registration and protection of plant varieties under legal frameworks such as the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Act (PPV&FRA) in India (Williamet al., 2024). Additionally, DNA-based markers provide valuable insights into genetic relationships, aiding in the efficient selection of parent lines for hybridization and improving crop resilience to biotic and abiotic stresses (Nadeemet al., 2018; Haqueetal., 2021).Over the past two decades, several DNA fingerprinting techniques, including Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD), Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP), Simple Sequence Repeats (SSR), and Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs), have been widely applied to characterize rapeseed-mustard varieties (Nybomet al., 2014; Panjabietal.,2019) Advances in high-throughput genotyping and nextgeneration sequencing (NGS) technologies have further enhanced the resolution and accuracy of genetic profiling, paving the way for marker-assisted selection (MAS) and genomic-assisted breeding strategies (Sinhaet al., 2023).

This book, “Meteorology and Geography” is designed to equip aspiring fisheries professionals with a foundational understanding of the atmospheric and terrestrial processes that profoundly influence aquatic ecosystems and, consequently, the distribution, abundance, and health of fish and other commercially important species. For too long, the study of fisheries has sometimes been perceived as largely focused on the biology and ecology within the water itself. While these aspects are undeniably vital, the reality is that aquatic environments are not isolated entities. They are inextricably linked to the atmosphere above and the land surrounding them. The weather patterns we experience daily – from sunshine and rainfall to storms and temperature fluctuations – directly impact the physical and chemical characteristics of our oceans, lakes, and rivers. Similarly, the geographical landscape, including topography, soil composition, and coastal features, plays a critical role in shaping these aquatic habitats. Consider for a moment the seemingly simple act of rain. Rainfall over land influences river discharge, bringing nutrients and sediments into freshwater and coastal systems. Changes in salinity, turbidity, and nutrient levels can dramatically alter the suitability of these waters for different fish species. Strong winds can drive ocean currents, upwelling events that bring nutrientrich deep waters to the surface, and the dispersal of fish larvae. Extreme weather events like cyclones and floods can cause devastating impacts on both wild and aquaculture-based fisheries. Furthermore, the broader geographical context dictates the regional climate, influencing long-term patterns of water temperature, precipitation, and wind. These climatic conditions, in turn, determine the types of aquatic ecosystems that can thrive in a particular area and the species that inhabit them.5 Understanding these geographical controls is essential for predicting the potential and limitations of fisheries in different regions.

Embryo Transfer (ET) refers to the technique by which embryos are collected from the reproductive tract of female (donor) and transferred to that of another female (recipient) which carries it to term. The donor and recipient female are in same stage of estrous cycle. The main objective of ET is the improvement of animal population through maximum utilization of superior females and males. It allows faster progeny testing of both male and females. By obtaining and transferring embryos from pre-pubertal females shorten the generation interval from birth to reproductive age. The superior buffaloes will be sent for slaughter after getting lactation yield in metropolitan cities. Utilizing oocytes for In-vitro maturation (IVM) and In-vitro fertilization (IVF) from such slaughtered superior buffaloes can prevent wastage of genetic material. ET allows preservation of rare and extinct species and breeds of animal. ET can be used as a basic tool for twinning, cloning, sexing and to test chromosomal aberrations.

Swine Marketing

The animal population in India is nearly 14 millions which is increasing day by day. The importance of animals in Indian Economy cannot be neglected. The economic benefit from animals is 26% of the total benefit from agriculture. Agricultural farming is not possible without animals. In agricultural profession, animals have an important role. In our country, crores of small and marginal farmers and agricultural labourers depend for their life on animals for their livelihood. Poor animal wealth is not a good symptom for a country.

Till today the work which is done on animal wealth by economists and marketing specialists is only limited. Economic and marketing studies on meat producing animals in our country is very less. Pigs are normally reared for meat purposes. Pigs are mostly untouched from this type of research on economic and marketing aspects. Pig population in our country is nearly 12 millions, which is 2.5% of total animal population in India.

Due to lack of studies, it is not possible to give any statement about correct situation of marketing and capacity of pigs.

Lac insects, under Family Tachardiidae (= Lacciferidae), Superfamily Coccoidea, Order Hemiptera are commercially important species for resin, dye and wax production. Lac insects are naturally distributed in tropical and subtropical areas of south and south-east Asia. Out of the nine genera and 99 species of lac insects reported from the world, two genera and 26 species are found in our country. The family Tachardiidae is divided into two sub-families, i) Tachardiinae including true lac insects of resinous cell and ii) Tachardininae including pseudo-lac insects of non-resinous cells. In India, lac is cultivated in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and parts of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and West Bengal primarily using Kerria lacca. However, natural populations of Kerria spp are distributed throughout India and K. chinensis in the north eastern states is also cultivated to a certain extent. Kerria lacca species is represented by two distinct forms, kusmi and rangeeni, differing for their host species preference, life cycle pattern, quality and quantity of the resin produced, settlement behaviour, etc. The two forms of the Indian lac insect, commonly referred as ‘strains’ in lac insect literature, were placed as infrasubspecific forms by Varshney (1977).
