Urban agriculture is gaining prominence as a viable solution to numerous challenges faced by modern cities, including food security, environmental sustainability, and community well-being. This comprehensive article explores the concept of urban agriculture, its historical development, and its various forms and practices. It examines the benefits of urban farming, such as enhanced food security, reduced food miles, and improved urban environments, while also addressing challenges like space constraints and regulatory issues. Chilli (Capsicum annuum L.), a member of the Solanaceae, is a significant spice and vegetable crop in India, extensively cultivated over warm temperate, tropical, and subtropical regions. Approximately 51 insect pests and two mite species from 27 families and 9 orders were discovered to be infesting chillies (Reddy and Puttaswamy, 1983). The yield losses range from 50-90 per cent due to insect pests in chilli (Nelson and Natrajan, 1994)
Chilli thrips: Scirtothrips dorsalis, Thripidae, Thysanoptera Biology
The adults are slender, yellowish brown in colour, with long, narrow, and heavily fringed wings. The adult female inserts eggs into the tissues of the leaves and shoots. The nymphs are similar to adults, except they are smaller and wingless. With the exception of the rainy season, the pest is present all year round. The life cycle is completed over a period of two weeks. Over the course of a year, multiple generations overlap.
Recently introduced invasive thrips in chilly is Thrips parvispinus Karny. It causes premature flower drop, shedding of fruits and malformations resulting in severe yield loss. The average fecundity is about 56 eggs with a mean developmental period of 18.8 days (Muray et al., 2009).

Biomass briquetting is the process of compressing loose and low-density biomass materials such as sawdust, agricultural residues, and forest waste into high-density, solid fuel blocks called briquettes. The process involves mechanical compression under high pressure using machines like piston presses, screw extruders, or hydraulic presses, depending on the technology used.
The main purpose of briquetting is to increase the density of biomass to improve its combustion properties, handling, transportation, and storage efficiency. In most modern systems, briquetting is done without the use of binders, as natural lignin present in the biomass acts as a binding agent under pressure and heat.
Importance of Biomass Briquetting
Biomass briquetting holds immense environmental, economic, and social importance.
1. Environmental Protection
• Briquetting reduces deforestation by providing an alternative to firewood and charcoal.
• It minimizes air pollution by producing cleaner-burning fuel with lower particulate emissions and sulfur content.
• The process helps in carbon sequestration by ensuring the
sustainable use of biomass.
2. Waste Management
• Agricultural residues like rice husk, sugarcane bagasse, cotton stalks, and sawdust, which otherwise cause disposal problems, are effectively utilized.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 interconnected goals established by the United Nations in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. These goals aim to address global challenges, including poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace, and justice (Fig. 14.1).

Diagnostic Symptoms

• A white, powdery fungal growth on the upper, lower or both leaves and shoots.

Introduction The ‘Brussels sprouts’ (Brassica oleracea L. var. gemmifera) coming under Brassicaceae family with chromosome number 2n=18 preferred by farmer for its edible green bud or sprouts (small heads that resemble miniature cabbages). It is a robust, slow-growing, longseason vegetable. The “sprouts” are formed in the leaf axils, beginning at the base of the stem and progressing upward. Brussels sprouts are high in vitamin A and C, as well as folic acid and dietary fiber. It also has anticancer effects due to the presence of sulforaphane. Similarly, to other Brassicas, Brussels sprouts contain indole-3-carbinol, which inhibit cancer cell growth. The temperate regions in the hills have the greatest potential for commercial production of brussels sprouts, followed by coastal regions with prolonged cool falls.

Background and Technology Intervention

To increase the water use efficiency coupling piped network and micro irrigation, Department of Agricultural Engineering along with the Tamil Nadu Government introduced a project on “Water conveyance works of modernization of on-farm irrigation network in 5(R) and 7(R) sluices Parambikulam Aliyar Project (PAP)” covering a total area of 109.86 acres in both the sluices.

Significance of this project is to improve the water use efficiency in canal command areas where the farmers were unable to cultivate annual / long term crop due to alternate supply of water in each zone. PAP command area has 4 zones and each zone receives water once in 135 days in a 2 year span through open channel leading farmers to adopt flood irrigation.

Fruit borer: Helicoverpa armigera, Noctuidae, Lepidoptera
Biology: The adult females are light pale brownish-yellow stout moths while the male moths are pale greenish with V-shaped speck. The eggs are creamy white and sculptured type. They are laid singly. The larva shows colour variation from greenish to brown. It has dark brown grey lines on the body with lateral white lines and also has a dark band. Pupation occurs in soil, leaf, fruit, and crop debris.
Nature of damage and symptoms
• The young larvae feed on tender foliage
• Mature larvae bore into fruit through circular holes
• Larva thrust only a part of its body into fruit and eat the inner content

The word chicken originated from old English word ‘icen’, Germanic word ‘kivkenam’ and cock (‘keuk’). According to Charles Darwin, the original chicken (Gallus domesticus) from which all modern domestic breeds of chicken have descended is referred to as Red Jungle Fowl (Gallus gallus). Archaeological discoveries in the Indus Valley suggest that chickens were probably domesticated from the Red Jungle fowl (Gallus gallus) as early as 5400 B.C. (West and Zhou, 1988). But there are some others who believe that modern chickens have been contributed by four wild species found in South East Asia. These were Gallus gallus (Red jungle fowl) found in eastern part of India, Burma, Java and Sumatra, Gallus sonneratii (Grey jungle fowl) prevalent in western and southern parts of India, Gallus lafayetti (Ceylone
jungle fowl) the native of Sri Lanka and Gallus varius (Javan jungle fowl) found in lower adjacent islands of Java.

Policy plays a critical role in shaping the future of agricultural sciences. It determines the resources allocated to research, the inclusivity of publishing practices, and the extent of global collaboration (Fig. 15.1).
This chapter outlines actionable policy recommendations to support equitable publishing, strengthen research infrastructure, and encourage global partnerships. Furthermore, it delves into the importance of fostering interdisciplinary research and emphasizes why agricultural sciences need to continue gaining momentum in the face of global challenges.
15.1. Equitable Publishing Practices
Access to academic publishing remains a significant challenge for researchers in developing countries. High article processing charges (APCs) for open-access journals often exclude underfunded institutions and individual researchers. Policy interventions are essential to create a more equitable publishing ecosystem.
15.1.1. Subsidies for Open Access Publishing
Governments and funding agencies should subsidize APCs for researchers from low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). For instance, the Plan S initiative-backed by organizations like the European Science Foundation—aims to make all publicly funded research open access (Plan S, 2018).

29.1 Introduction
Cleaning is achieved using a cleaning agent designed to remove food, dirt, rust stains, minerals, or other residues. It is crucial to choose the appropriate cleaning agent, as not all are suitable for surfaces that come into contact with food. In a food-processing facility, sanitation involves ensuring that utensils and equipment that come into contact with products are kept clean and sterile. Additionally, clothing, air, packaging materials, and non-contact surfaces like floors, walls, and ceilings must be sanitized to prevent product contamination. Employees’ bodies, especially their hands, can also be sources of contamination, so maintaining high personal hygiene and cleanliness standards is essential. Moisture and heat can lead to microbiological contamination of both products and the environment. Moisture on product-contact surfaces and within products creates a medium where microorganisms can thrive and find nutrients, potentially affecting the safety and quality of milk and dairy products.
29.2 Types of Soil
Cleaning involves removing food residues and other types of soil from surfaces like utensils and equipment used in the dairy and food industries.
• In the dairy-processing sector, the equipment must be cleaned of various types of soil including: liquid milk films, air-dried films, heatprecipitated films, heat-hardened films, milk stone, and other foreign materials.
• Soluble soils will dissolve and be carried away in rinse or wash water. For insoluble soil components, chemical detergents may be needed to either dissolve them or soften them to facilitate easier removal.
• Cleaning or sanitizing the product contact surfaces of dairy equipment involves both washing and sterilizing. It’s important to avoid causing undue wear, erosion, or corrosion to these surfaces, as this can reduce their lifespan

With the recent advances in cognitive science and applied ethology, it become imperative to assess the effect of various negative stimuli on the animal welfare and meat quality in goats during slaughter. The present study was designed to assess the effect of exposure of goats to slaughter ambient such as the smell of blood, vocalization, noise, movement of equipment, and unfamiliar workers could initiate stress responses, thereby affecting animal welfare and meat quality. Boer cross bucks (age 8-12 months of age, 25-30 kg live weight, n=18) were halal slaughtered into three groups viz., Control (slaughtered alone), E (exposed to act of slaughter), and S (slaughtered in front of E). The vocalization and avoidance behavior were present in 50% of goats upon exposure to slaughter ambient. The time to death and bleed out percentage did not differ significantly among treatments. The exposure of the goats to the slaughter resulted in a significant (p<0.05) increase in the nor-adrenaline, and β-endorphin. Based on the present study, it can be concluded that exposure to slaughter ambient had an effect on behavioral responses, carcass, and blood biochemical factors. Thus, the present study highlighted the issue of emotional stress and slaughter empathy in goats. These findings could help in harmonizing all practices of slaughter and improving animal welfare while fulfilling religious and customary demands.

INTRODUCTION
The fuel system in a tractor engine is essential for maintaining efficient engine operation by ensuring clean and well-regulated fuel is delivered to the combustion chamber for optimal performance. Proper upkeep of this system, including regular checks on fuel filters, lines, and pumps, helps extend the engine’s lifespan and guarantees smooth operation during demanding agricultural tasks. The fuel system plays a key role in supplying the engine with precisely regulated fuel for combustion. Core components like the fuel pump, fuel filter, and fuel injectors work together to deliver the right quantity of fuel at the appropriate time, ensuring the engine operates efficiently, performs reliably, and lasts longer.
FUEL PUMP
The fuel pump is responsible for drawing fuel from the fuel tank and delivering it to the engine at the correct pressure. It ensures a consistent and reliable flow of fuel to the fuel injectors or carburetor.

• Mechanical Fuel Pump: Common in older tractors, this pump is usually driven by the engine through a gear or camshaft. It delivers fuel from the tank to the fuel system at a steady pressure.
• Electric Fuel Pump: Found in modern tractors, electric pumps are powered by the tractor’s electrical system and provide more consistent pressure and flow. These are often located near the fuel tank and can be activated by a relay or switch.

1.1 WHAT IS PLANT PROPAGATION?

Propagation of plant is defined as multiplication and perpetuation of new individuals from a selected plant having all the characters of the original one. It is the process of increasing the number of plants of a particular species or cultivar.
