1. VEGETATIVE PROPAGULE

Vegetative propagation or asexual propagation is the method of propagating plants with the use of organs other than the seed and spore. In contrast to sexual propagation, the union of the male and female sexual gametes (fertilization) is not a requisite to the production of new plants. Hence the word “asexual”, which means “without sex” or “not sexual”.

The Disease Triangle and Disease Pyramid

The disease triangle is one of the first concepts encountered by students in an introductory plant pathology course and often may be encountered in higher level classes. The interactions of the three component namely (1) susceptible host (2) virulent pathogen and (3) favorable environments have been visualized as a triangle, generally referred to as the “DISEASE TRAINGLE”. Each side of the traingle represent one of the three components. The length of each side is proportional to the sum total of the characteristic of each component that favor disease. For example, the more virulent and abundant the pathogen, the longer the pathogen side would be and the greater the potential amount of disease. Similarly if the plant are resistant, the widely spaced or wrong age, the amount of disease would be small or zero. Where as if the plants are susceptible, at a susceptible stage of growth, or densely planted, the host side would be long and the potential amount of disease could be great. Also, the more favourable the environmental conditions that help the pathogen, or that reduce host resistance, that longer the envirnmental side would be and greater the potential amount of diseases. If the three component of the disease traingle could be quantified, the area of the traingle would represent the amount of disease in a plant or in plant population. If any of three component in zero, these can be no disease.

Camphor (Cinnamomum camphora) known under the names camphor tree, camphorwood or camphor laurel of the family Lauraceae is obtained from the bark of camphor tree that is a principle source of camphor. It has its use throughout the globe and along the centuries as an ailment for various remedies that help in treating issues like irritations, pains, inflammation, congestion, etc. In addition to this Cinnamomum camphora also owns suppressive and anti mutagenic effect that is useful in treatment of deadly disease like human cancer cells retaining the healthy cells. Indian religious system is well versed with the utilization of Camphor in rituals, however the camphor used here is made synthetically.

The botanical name Cinnamomum camphora is derived from Greek language from the word ‘kinnamomon’ which refers to spice. This herb has its earliest record that is used by Egyptians for embalming purposes. Along with this it also finds its use in Sanskrit literature also. Camphor tree is a fragrant evergreen tree that is native to China, India, Mongolia, Japan and Taiwan and a variety of it is grown in Southern United States; especially in Florida. The species Camphora, referred to as camphor or karpura, is an important chemical ingredient present in the oil that found in the tissues of tree.

Morphological characteristics

It is a tall tree that grows up to 100 feet. The trunk is 8 m long and 2 m wide and bark is yellowish brown colored rough on the outside and smoother inside with vertical fissures. All parts of the tree have peculiar fragrance of camphor. Leaves are fragrant, leathery and are yellowish light to dark green with glossy veins with varied shape.

Introduction

• Thus "genetic enhancement" or "pre-breeding" refers to the transfer or introgression of genes or gene combinations from unadapted sources into breeding materials (FAO, 1996).

• Genetic enhancement plays an important role in utilizing unadapted and unutilized germplasm collections and creating vast genetic variability for development of productive cultivars / hybrids.

• Objective of Genetic Enhancement is broadening the genetic base and increases genetic diversity

• Primary gene pool (GP-1): Members of this gene pool are probably in the same "species" (in conventional biological usage) and can intermate freely.

• Secondary gene pool (GP-2): Members of this pool are probably normally classified as different species than the crop species under consideration (the primary gene pool).

• Tertiary gene pool (GP-3): Members of this gene pool are more distantly related to the members of the primary gene pool. The primary and tertiary gene pools can be intermated, but gene transfer between them is impossible without the use of "rather extreme or radical measures such as embryo rescue (or embryo culture, a form of plant organ culture) induced polyploidy (chromosome doubling) bridging crosses (e.g., with members of the secondary gene pool).

Introduction

Earth worm bring about fertility in the soil was first highlighted by Charles Darwin in 1881 when he published his book on the “Fermentation of vegetables mould through the action of worms. Since then, the vermiculture has become an important aspect of biological or organic farming. Vermicompost aspect involves the use of earthworm as multifaceted bioreactors which effectively recycle the nontoxic organic wastes into the soil. They effeciently utilize the friendly soil microflora, demolish the soil pathogens and converts organic wastes into valueable products such as biofertilizers, biopesticides, vitamins, enzymes, antibiotics, growth hormones and proteinaceous biomass. Earthworms play an important role in soil farming in different ways as:

1) They influences soil pH.2) They act as agents of physical decomposition. 3) They promote humus formation in soil. 4) They improve soil structure 5) They enrich the soil. Vermicompost is the excellent form of organic manure and is practically 100 percent humus.

23.1 Dry Flower Packing

Careful packing is one of the most important aspects of any product. Dry flower packing is the simplest way to capture the essence of summer flowers till long. Dry flowers should be packed nicely to avoid any damage. They should be packed alone in appropriate sized carton loosely cushioned with paper.They should be packed in a manner to keep them away from direct sunlight leaving some room for air. Packing material should be stable and firm to hold the dry flowers well without any damage during storage or transportation. Dry flowers can be packed in a variety of ways: in poly bags, window box, cardboard box, or in a sachet.

9.1 Magnetic seed separator

These machines use a magnetic force to separate damaged seeds or other particles from the good seeds. This is used to solve special problems in seed lots that can not be taken out with our other basic seed cleaning equipment. Most of the time it is used for vegetable and field seeds that have problems in seed damage (fish mouth in cucumber or melon seeds / cracked radish or cabbage seeds), insect damage (beetle holes in cotton seeds) or contamination with soil or plant parts (white plant parts in onion seed) etc.

Morphological characteristics

It is a huge dioecious tree that can reach a height of 10 metres and has yellow wood and sap. The slices of stem and root are stiff and woody. The colour of the wood is yellowish-brown on the outside and yellow on the inside. The substance is found in huge woody, cylindrical, straight sections with a diameter of up to 10 cm; branchlets are terete, brown tomentose, and subsequently glabrescent with disciform petiole-scars. Leaves simple, alternate, exstipulate, broadly ovate, rounded, truncate or shallowly cordate at base, acuminate at apex, 10-32x8-22 cm, glabrescent above, hoary yellowish-white tomentellous beneath, thinly coriaceous; main nerves 5-7, palmate, with 2 pairs of distal lateral nerves; midrib and other main nerves sunken, whitish tomentose beneath above basal margin on the lamina of leaf; stipules absent.

The large volume, type and nature of animal breeding data and the complex nature of analytical requirement warrants additional tools for handling, storage, retrieval and solving complex equations. Accuracy, speed, computational requirement, applicability, etc., has resulted in the development of numerous software exclusive for animal breeding data analysis. 8.1. Malformation

8.1.1. Fusarium

The classical example of Fusarium infection is Fusarium moniliforme which induces malformation in inflorescence, causing mango malformation disease.

The fungal mycelial morphology may vary significantly on different media, and the descriptions here are based upon growth on potato flakes agar (PFA) at 25° C with on and off fluorescent light cycles of approximately 12 h each. The mycelial colony has rapid growth.

Principle

The quantification of infectious virus particles is commonly achieved through the utilisation of the Median Tissue Culture Infectious Dose (TCID50) assay. The assay functions through the introduction of a serial dilution of the virus sample into cells in a 96 well plate format. The chosen cell type is specifically intended to exhibit a cytopathic effect (CPE), which refers to observable changes in morphology or cell death resulting from viral infection. Following a period of incubation, the cells are examined for cytopathic effects or cell death, and each well is categorised as either infected or uninfected. The concentration at which 50% of the wells exhibit a cytopathic effect (CPE) is employed to determine the 50% tissue culture infectious dose (TCID50 ) of the viral sample. The end point is the dose or dilution that infects or kills or shows CPE of the cells. The calculation can be performed using various mathematical techniques, such as the Spearman-Karber method or the Reed Muench method. The virus titer is quantified as the number of tissue culture infectious dose 50 (TCID50 ) per millilitre (ml). The non-cytopathic virus can be quantified by employing the fluorescent antibody test, immune-peroxidase assay, or other appropriate methodologies.

Introduction

Agriculture sector plays an important role in economy of India and contributes 18% to the GDP. It ensuring food security for more than1.26 billion Indian populations with diminishing cultivable land resource is a herculean task. Pesticides have been the most effective weapons and play vital role in crop protection against agricultural insect-pests. The green revolution technology has been characterized by use of hybrids/ improved varieties, chemical fertilizers, pesticides and irrigation water. After green revolution agricultural production has been very impressive but the excessive use of fertilizers and harmful pesticides has resulted in several undesirable effects on the environment and on the farming systems. However, indiscriminate use of synthetic chemical pesticides over the last four decades has adversely affected human health, non target organisms and environment and has also enhanced development of pesticide resistance among pest species While the former is exemplified by pesticide residues in soil, air, water, food etc., the latter includes phytotoxicity, physiological deform ities, diseases, mortality, population changes, genetic disorders, gene erosion, etc. in plant, mammal, avian, insect and other organisms. Entry of chemical pesticides into food chain and their bioaccumulation triggers several unforeseen consequences. However, in the conventional agriculture most of the weeds, pests, insects and diseases were controlled using natural and sustainable practices such as cultural, mechanical and physical control strategies. Environmental safety and agricultural sustainability are equally important for survival on the Earth. Therefore, it is the need of hour to identify the alternatives of suitable pesticides to control the insects-pests without sacrificing the productivity and profitability. Chemical pesticides has many side effects, eco-friendly management is essentially required for sustainable crop production in the present scenario.

The concept of Centers of Origin given by Russian scientist N.I. Vavilov (1935) is based on his studies of vast collection of plants at the Institute of Plant  Industry, Leningrad. According to him, crop plants evolved from wild species in the areas showing great diversity and termed them as primary Centers of Origin; but in some areas, certain crop species show considerable diversity of forms although they did not originate their, such areas are known as secondary center of origin of these species. He identified 8 primary centers (Chinese, Indian, Inner Asiatic, Asia Minor, Mediterranean, Abyssinian, South Mexico, Central America and South America Andes Center) and three sub-centers (Indo-Malayan, Chilean and Brazilian-Paraguayan sub-center) of origin for crop plants. Basilevskaya (1960) first investigated the geographical origin of garden plants. Coats (1968) who first stressed out the ornamental herbs whereas Hui-Lin-Li (1974) wrote about the introduction of woody plants. According to Tay (2007) survey of thirty common flowers and their related species show a similar pattern of concentrated occurrence of species in certain geographic regions.
Exploration and exploitation of gene centers need to be proceed with the systematic cooperation of taxonomists, geneticists and plant pathologists. The 17 centers of origin identified for different flower and ornamental crops are
given (Table 2.1)

This chapter examines how people perceive, process and respond to information in technology-rich work environments. Cognitive ergonomics is introduced as the study of mental processes—including attention, memory, perception, reasoning and decision-making—in human-system interaction. The chapter explains how excessive mental workload, digital interruptions, poorly organized information and confusing interfaces can increase fatigue and errors. Principles for designing clear displays, intuitive controls, effective feedback and manageable information flows are presented. Particular attention is given to concentration, situational awareness, decision support and error prevention. The chapter demonstrates that modern workplaces must support both the physical body and the cognitive capacity of users to achieve safe, reliable and productive performance.

Climate change is now a global phenomenon and its impact on livelihood health and wellbeing, and overall quality of life is not deniable. No country is free from the overall impacts of climate change, but poor people of developing countries have been disproportionately affected by the adverse effects. Vulnerability in the context of climate change is a function of sensitivity, exposure and adaptive capacities. Odisha is the 9^th largest state by area and the 11th largest state by population in India. The state has an area of 155,707 km², which is 4.87 per cent of the total area of India, and a coastline of 480 km. In the eastern part of the state lies the coastal plain. It extends from the Subarnarekha river in the north to the Rushikulya river in the south. The State is broadly divided into four geographical regions, i.e. Northern Plateau, Central River Basins, Eastern Hills and Coastal Plains. The climate of the state is characterized by hot summer and cold winter in the interior parts. The state has historically been highly prone to climate change and multiple hazards – mainly cyclones, droughts and ?oods. Natural disasters devastate millions of lives and livelihoods in Odisha each year. More children and women suffer from the effects of natural disasters and this is predicted to worsen as storms ?oods and droughts become more severe and frequent because of climate change.

Isostasy is derived from the Greek word isostasios meaning ‘in equipoise’ or in a state of balance. American geologist Dutton was the first to use the term isostasy in 1889 for the state of gravitational equilibrium that exists between continents and ocean floor and the mountains, plateaus and plains on a rotating earth, in accordance with densities of their underlying rocks. Dutton was of the view that the height of these different features was related to their density. In other words, the higher features were composed of rocks of lower density and the features of lesser to height were made of rocks of higher density. For instance, the continental blocks whose average height is about 5 kms above the ocean floor are composed of lighter rocks than the latter, and to compensate for their higher height the continental blocks go deeper into the earth so that the continents and ocean basins may remain in equilibrium. The same argument applies to the mountain ranges. The excess mass of lighter materials which rises in the form of mountain chains on the earth’s surface is compensated by light materials extending as roots into the denser strata below. In other words, the upper part of the earth’s crust is built of lighter rocks which is floating on the substratum of denser rocks. The hypothesis of the sialic rocks floating over the sima of the sub-stratum had been first put forward by Sir George Airy of Britain in 1855. The use of the word floating, of course, did not imply that the sub-stratum was in a liquid condition.
