The first use of rubber was by the Olmecs, who centuries later passed on the knowledge of natural latex from the Hevea tree in 1600 BC to the ancient Mayans. They boiled the harvested latex to make a ball for a Mesoamerican ballgame.

Yak is among the most remarkable domestic animals. It is adapted to thrive in the harsh environment of high altitude and sustains livelihood of highlanders. Yak is handicapped because of lack of veterinary assistance and declining pastoral biomass. Marketing facilities for yak-based products are limited and the production potential of yak husbandry is on decline. Dearth of locally available trained manpower and prevailing illiteracy are other hindering factors for development of yak husbandry. Research and development with focus on upliftment of yak husbandry and yak products are therefore important.

It has been repeatedly proving that Science& Technology that is close and in harmony with nature is proving winner in the long run. If the past 60 years led to the Green Revolution in agriculture which often became Greed Revolution, the next 60 year should be the emergence of love for nature, diversity and Sustainable Green Revolution. The two goals – Sustainability and Productivity are inter-related.

It is also said that the main difference between the past and today is that our problems are truly global. We are also aware that globally and nationally the rich-poor divide is growing and though world produces enough food, nearly 800 million people remain food insecure. Among 8 millennium goals, eradication of poverty and hunger and environmental sustainability are perhaps the most prominent and complimentary.

Higher Farm Production with Lower Input Cost

There is a great need to reduce the input costs and at the same time improve the farm productivity in a sustainable manner. A model has been worked out based on a number of field demonstration studies in different parts of India, Africa and Far Eastern countries. A model in which input cost can be reduced by nearly 20 percent and at the same time the crop production can be enhanced upto 20 percent is possible and can be a boon to farmers in most parts of the world. This is the model, which can be easily adopted in an evolutionary way. As suggested by Jonathan Foley (BOX – 1), use of high-tech, precision farming systems, as well as approaches borrows from organic farming, we can boost farm productivity substantially.

"Where is your Dhoti, Dr. Mehta ?” Dr. Varghese Kurien surprised me as I entered his office at IRMA (Institute of Rural Management Anand). That was April 2000, soon after I had taken over as the Vice Chancellor of the erstwhile Gujarat Agricultural University (GAU) and had decided to call on him during my visit to the Anand Campus. (At that time GAU was the largest University in the Asia with four main campuses – Dantiwada, Anand, Junagadh and Navsari and about 65 experimental farms / stations spreaded all over).

In contrast to the traditional universities, agricultural universities have been entrusted with the Herculean task of technology dissemination at the grass root level such that the package of practices evolved by the agricultural scientists should reach out the end-users, viz. farmers , for adopting in the field, with consequent increment in the farm productivity and farmer’s income.

This unique mandate has been assigned to agricultural universities on the pattern of land grant colleges of the United States. Such vision and trust, envisaged by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and his devout lieutenants, herald creation of state agricultural universities (SAUs) in the early 1960s. The key role played by SAUs in the first green revolution and agricultural human resources development have been regarded as the milestones in the history of India post-independence, that made the country self-sufficient in food production and, in turn, to self reliance in milk, vegetables, fruits and inland fish production.

Care and treatment of animals is possible by the combined efforts of all the stake holders of animals shared by the owners, consumers and veterinarians. Although, veterinary services are available throughout the country, involving different stakeholders including veterinarian, there is an entrenched lack of empathy and a profound disconnect among stakeholders when it comes to identifying with the pain and discomfort of animals. 
Veterinarians participate in two ways in animal welfare and animal ethics. One is the role of the veterinarian as an individual member of a profession. The other is the collective role of the profession, as expressed by the professional bodies.

Animal Welfare Board of India was started under the stewardship of Late Smt. Rukmini Devi Arundale, well known humanitarian. The Animal Welfare Board of India is a statutory advisory body on Animal Welfare Laws and promotes animal welfare in the country. The board established in 1962 under Section 4 to 10 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 (No. 59 of 1960).  The primary sources of funding of the AWBI are grants from the Government of India. However, contributions, subscriptions, bequests and gifts will also be encouraged.

The process of civilization and materialist life style has forced man to make laws which govern or rule the conduct of the people of society or community. In the earlier days the relation of human and animal was interdependent and mutual. Now a days man has become self-centered and ignorant of his surroundings. This has led to cruelty on the animals in many circumstances. Therefore, in pursuit of prevention of the cruelty to animals following laws, regulations have made by the government.

Sheep and goat rearing in India continues to be traditional even today. This sector is primarily in the hands of poor, landless or small and marginal farmers who raise their animals on natural vegetation, stubbles and supplement tree lopping. The productivity of sheep in India is relatively low with an average body weight gain of 20 to 50 g/day. The major causes for the low productivity are inadequate grazing resources, tropical heat and disease incidences and a lack of awareness about improved management practices.

1 Broilers

The broilers are also called young meat chickens; generally attend a body weight of 2 kg at 35-38 days of age with a feed conversion of 1.5-1.8. This improvement in growth is equivalent to reduction of market age by one day per year. This fast growth is possible due to intense feeding good quality feed & growth promoters in less space. However, this type of rearing has challenges many welfare issues in broiler farming.

Various indicators like range of behavioural, physiological, pathological and carcass-quality parameters can be used to assess the welfare of animals. Whenever, animals undergo painful handling or any other managerial operation, they are likely to face short-term stress. In this condition an increased physiological responses, behavioural responses, injury or mortality are most commonly used; however, some animals which are kept in improper housing with less floor space may cause chronic stress leading to increased disease incidence and suppression of normal development. Therefore, the following techniques can be used to assess the animal welfare at farm level in any given situation.

4.1 Introduction

More and more industrial applications require self cleaned surfaces, water repellent, anti-dirt pickup and many other specific surface requirements. Introduction of nanotechnology has changed the coating scenario drastically. Hard, anti-scratch, hydrophobic coatings are achieved by the addition of small amounts of nano-pigments which help in creating hydrophobic surface. It is also possible to grow certain nano-fibers which on chemical treatment give surfaces which can either attract water or repel it. It is also possible now to create self healing coatings which can repair surface once they are damaged by scratch. Capacitance coupler pads have been devised to reach those corroding areas which are not covered by other corrosion protection methods. Stringent requirements of many modern industrial application resulted in developing coatings which can give special surface properties such as high hardness, scratch resistance, hydrophobicity, anti-dirt pickup etc.  This brief article presents a few new researches which provide one or more special properties to the surface.

MMPs are a family of zinc-containing, calcium-dependent endopeptidases secreted by various cell types and implicated in a wide range of physiological events (e.g. trophoblast invasion, development, endometrial remodeling, ovulation, angiogenesis, wound healing, bone resorption and cell migration) as well as in pathological processes. Matrix metalloproteinase (MMPs) and their tissue inhibitors (timps) have been strongly implicated in the pathogenesis of many types of human cancer. Expression levels for the most relevant MMPS are confirmed by reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The activities of MMPs are significantly higher in malignant tissues than benign canine tumours.

Tumours of mammary gland are the most common tumours of female dog representing approximately 30-50% of all tumours in bitch. Chemotherapy is a kind of treatment that uses drugs to attack cancer cells. The importance of chemotherapy has been emphasized that survival could be prolonged after chemotherapy in cancer patients.

Considering immunosuppressive nature of mammary tumours, the use of immunotherapy to prevent cyto-toxicity of cancer drugs, further metastasis and prolong survival period in canines. “ImmuPlus” (Indian Herbs) is a type of polyherbal ayurvedic product containing extracts of Ocimum sanctum, Withania somnifera, Emblica officinale and Tinospora cordifolia.

Cancer cryosurgery began in England during 1850s, when James Arnott used local application of salt solutions containing crushed ice to treat advanced cancers in accessible sites, such as breast and the uterine cervix. Since then, landmark advances in chemistry, physics, material science, and biology have culminated in the sophisticated cryosurgical devices currently in use.
 
Cryosurgery is defined as a method that uses the local application of extreme cold to destroy abnormal or diseased tissue, with the possibility of the maintenance of normal adjacent tissue. Normal tissue can be maintained because the extension of the ice ball can be controlled. Tissue temperature should reach -20^o C or below. Attempts should be taken to kill all tissues in the target with minimal damage to surrounding tissues. There is a variable response of tissues to cryotherapy based on density, vascularity and the water content of the tissue, temperature and size of the cryoprobe, spray rate, rate of freeze, rate of thaw and number of freeze and thaw cycles. It is ideal to have quick freeze and slow thaw for maximum benefit. The extent of freezing should be closely monitored, with either temperature monitoring probes or by visual inspection and palpation of frozen area and this is more advantageous in case of relatively small lesions.

Introduction

Agriculture is highly dependent on environment, and it’s very difficult to get favourable climate and other conditions for optimum crop growth and development as per crop need. Open field conditions are having a high direct affect of the prevailing weather conditions on crop growth, and also on population dynamics of viruses, fungus, bacteria, insects, etc. With time crops has adopted themselves to specific seasons, but the fast changing climatic conditions happening across the globe has changed the climatic characteristics of a season. This has resulted in untimely rains, high temperature fluctuations and changes in other abiotic and biotic factors in geographically varied locations where it was not supposed to be earlier based on various geographical factors deciding the climatic conditions of that area. Therefore, there is need to develop suitable technologies to sustain these challenges. How to address these issues, can we manipulate the climatic conditions or can we provide protection to the crops against climatic fluctuations and various other related stresses.

Increasing concern about climate change and global warming has created immense awareness among society about green house gas and its reduction. Irrespective of the geographical location, population density and economic development of any region, there is a huge scope for addressing the green house gas emission. Cities have a key role to play in the global agenda for addressing the challenge of climate change. Today, approximately half of the world’s population lives in cities; by 2050, that proportion will probably have increased to two-thirds. India has the highest rate of change of the urban population and will remain above 2% annually for the next three decades. 1.1 Introduction

Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) is a well-known table fruit of tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The Romans received it from Carthage, hence the name of the genus Punica. Some botanists place it in the family Lythraceae, of the peculiar type of fruit, called as balausta, most authorities make it the only genus in the family Punicaceae. Litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) a native of China, is grown in India since 18th century. It is member of the genus Litchi in the soapberry family, Sapindaceae. The name of the fruit is derived from the Chinese word lee chee which means “one who gives the pleasures of life”. Litchi is also known as the “fruit of romance” in China. Chinese pear (Pyrus pyrifolia) is a pear tree species native to China, Japan and Korea. Introduction

The arid region of India, constituting 12 m ha area  which occurs dominantly in the northwestern part of the country. The state of Rajasthan accounts for highest area (61%) followed by Gujarat (19.6%) Punjab (5%) and Haryana (4%) of the total geographical area of hot arid ecosystem. These areas experience an annual rainfall between 100-500 mm with the coefficient of variation 40-70 per cent. The mean annual rainfall in the western Rajasthan varies from less than 100mm in extreme western part of the Jaisalmer district to more than 400 mm in eastern part of the region. The high temperature during summers as high as 48^ºC and low in winters up to –3^ºC. High wind velocity  (10-13 km /hr) and high annual  evapo- transpiration  (1527 mm /year)  again gives a great threatening to the arable cropping in this region. The vagaries of monsoon in terms of its occurrence and distribution during the season has a wide variability >48 per cent with 30-35 days of average rainy days per year.

Abstract

On average 13 million hectares of the world’s forests disappear every year due to different reasons. Among them forest diseases is one of the prominent factor. Seeds of soft wood and hardwood trees are attacked by fungi and other microbes.  Seed-borne pathogens of wood trees affect nursery seedlings and reduce seed germination and seedling vigor. The micro-organisms that are mostly associated with tree seeds are fungi, bacteria and to a lesser extent viruses. There are many mechanisms by which tree seeds acquire pathogens. Indeed, both the occurrence and severity of many seed-borne fungi, is often traced to the mishandling of fruits, cones or seeds. The majority of pathogens associated with forest tree seeds are fungi, producing only or predominantly the asexual (anamorph) stage (Deuteromycetes).

The fungus grows as shooty to dark olivaceous, ectoparasite covering entire leaf lamina. Pathogen initiates as small isolated fungal growth on lower side of leaf but very soon it spreads on both sides. Pathogen reduces severely the photosynthesis area. Infected leaves fall down very quickly after dropping and rolling. It causes severe loss in seed production crop as well as in the late sown crops.

Allard (1960) defines germplasm as “the sum total of the hereditary  materials in  species” The word germplasm in context of plants is now referred to as plant genetic resources i.e. PGR.PGR is a component of the world’s biological diversity. The term biological diversity is a vast and often undervalued resource. Biological diversity includes every form of life, from the smallest microbe to the largest beast. Biodiversity is the variety and variability of all plants, animals and microorganisms and the ecological complexes of which they are part. The earth’s biodiversity – its ecosystems, species and genes – are the product of over 3000 million years of evolution. Throughout this time, small changes have accumulated in populations, resulting in a multitude of living forms closely adapted to the physical conditions they face and to each other. They supply all our food, much of our raw materials and energy and many of our medicines. Intact eco-systems also play a central role in the functioning of biosphere. Plants are of crucial importance in stabilizing climate, protecting watersheds on soils and maintaining the chemical balance of the earth. When key species are lost, vital ecological services are disrupted (Zedan, 1995).

Historically, Indian scientists have recognized the importance of conserving plant biodiversity with particular reference to indigenous     and naturalized crops and their wild relatives. Indian scientists have recognized the importance of conserving plant biodiversity as early as 1935 by the ‘Crops and Soil Wing’ of the then Board of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry. Late Dr. B. P. Pal, in his classic paper ‘Search for New genes’ published in 1937 emphasized the importance of germplasm augmentation and utilization in crop improvement programmes. The need was reiterated in a meeting of the Indian Society of Genetics and Plant Breeding in 1941, which inter alia discussed the subject of economic crops. Dr. B. P. Pal, working at the then Imperial (now Indian) Agricultural Research Institute approached the then Imperial (now Indian) Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) to set-up a unit for assembly of global germplasm under phytosanitary conditions in India. The ICAR scheme for plant introduction started functioning in 1946 under the leadership of late Dr. Harbhajan Singh as the first ‘Operational Scientist’. The scheme was further expanded and strengthened as ‘Plant Introduction and Exploration Organization’ in the Botany Division in 1956 and later established as a separate Division of Plant Introduction in IARI in 1961 headed by Dr. Harbhajan Singh.

Marshall and Brown (1975) have considered the subject of optimal sampling strategies for use in the genetic conservation of crop plants. The theme of this paper has been relatively narrow. These authors have defined a strategy for populations under imminent threat of extinction applicable to particularly the traditional landraces of some major crops such as wheat, rice and barley on account of danger of replacement of the landraces on a very broad scale due to the spread of modern cultivars. According to Brown and Marshall (1995) the emphasis in collecting of crop genetic resources has  changed radically over the years. Instead of crisis-driven broad scale crop specific programmes, the collection of plant genetic resources now involves 3 important elements as given below :

The diversity collection and making it available for future use is one of the most important activities related to management to plant germplasm resources. The collection of plant germplasm from their natural habitat is broadly known as plant germplasm exploration. The main reasons for collecting germplasm of given gene pool in a given geographical location are as follows (Engels et al., 1995)

The most important root and tuber crops cultivated on a worldwide scale are potato (Solanum tuberosum), cassava (Manihot esculenta), sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas), yams (Dioscorea spp.) and taro (Colocasia esculenta), but there are many others that are of regional, national or local importance, in a total of over a dozen dicot and monocot families. Most of these originated in tropical or subtropical areas and are mainly used as sources of carbohydrates. Many minor root and tuber crops, such as turmeric (Curcuma longa) and arrowroot (Maranta arundinacea, Tacca leontopedaloides), are also used in folk medicine and as spices (Sastrapradja et al., 1981). All these crops are vegetatively propagated. There are also vegetatively (or clonally) propagated crops that are not roots or tubers, e.g. bananas and sugarcane. A selection of the more important crops is given in Table 13.1 (Huaman et al., 1995).

After harvesting and threshing, the seed usually arrives at the cleaning plant with trash, green leaves, weeds, other crop seeds and insects, etc. If the seed contains leaves, etc. and other high moisture materials, it cannot be accurately cleaned and safely stored until most of the foreign material has been removed. The process of removing the unwanted materials from a seed lot is known as seed conditioning. Seed conditioning is an essential component of seed technology to ensure that the farmers get the seed of high quality.

Seed enhancement is the process or technology to further improve seed performances under very specific regimes and with certain planting equipment. Three major seed enhancement technologies are as follows (Copeland and McDonald, 1995).

Green peach aphid/leaf curl aphid : Brachycaudus helichrysi : Aphididae

These are green aphids that suck the sap from growing buds. Leaf buds become weak and result in poor setting and premature fruit fall.

The pest has a worldwide distribution. In India it is seen in the hills of North India and in nilgiris.

It is a serious pest of peaches, plum, apricot, and almond. The aphids attack the tender portions like new buds, blossoms, petioles, tender fruits and leaves. When the new flushes are attacked, the leaves get curled and crinkled and fruit set is either reduced or  fruits fall off . The infestation starts with the commencement of bud swelling and continues until after flowering. The leaf curl may be confused with that due to the fungal leaf curl by Taphrina deformans.

Spiralling whitefly : Aleurodicus dispersus : Aleyrodidae

A. dispersus originated from the tropical countries in Central and South America. More recently, it has been reported from Asia and Africa. In India, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu faces its problem. A. dispersus is a highly polyphagous species. Its wide host range includes many vegetable, ornamental and fruit crops, as well as numerous trees and shrubs, including Capsicum, Citrus, Cocos nucifera (coconut), Euphorbia pulcherrima (poinsettia), Glycine max (soybean), Hibiscus, Lycopersicon esculentum (tomato), Mangifera indica (mango), Musa (banana), Persea americana (avocado), Prunus spp., Psidium guajava (guava)and  Solanum melongena (brinjal) etc.
