Abstract

Pulses constitute an important component of the diet and are a major source of protein in vegetarian diet. India has largest area under pulse cultivation and produces a variety of pulses. A large portion of this produce gets spoiled due to insect and fungal attack. A variety of insecticides and fungicides are used for the control of pest during storage. There is an increasing trend towards the reduction in the use of pesticides in storage due to strong demand from consumers to choose food with no pesticide residue, development of insect resistance to pesticides and the impact of pesticides’ use on environment. All these have posed a challenge to refine the existing management procedures of storage and commodity to find the optimal solution. Controlled/ Modified Atmosphere storage offers an alternative to the use of pesticides extends storage life and maintains product quality. The Controlled/Modified Atmosphere is created by altering the composition of the atmosphere in terms of CO2, O2, and N2 concentration. High CO2 produce undesirable conditions for insects and microbes and thus control their activity.

Amongst the fruit crops, Olive is undoubtedly one of the world’s oldest cultivated crop and its cultivations dates back to 3000 B.C. and till date is recognized as a symbol of peace and prosperity. Olive is an evergreen subtropical plant, but for flowering and fruiting it does require chilling as most of the temperate fruits do. Although slow to grow, olive is a very long lived plant and with its typical dense foliage of olive green and silvery leaves also serves as an ornamental type. The centre of origin includes Palestine, Lebanon, north west Syria and Cyprus. The Greeks and Roman were well aware of the significance of olive oil during 900 to 600 B.C. and oil was considered as a luxury item in body anointment. From its native place olive established itself in the Mediterranean region especially Italy, Spain and from here to other parts of the world.

Hendra, a disease of horse has been recognized in Australia since 1994-95 with zoonotic importance. It is caused by a virus under the genus Megamyxovirus and subfamily Paramyxovirinae and family Paramyxoviridae. This virus is also endemic in certain species of bat. Another zoonotic bat virus called Nipah virus has been placed under the same genus and family. It is transmitted between the horses through contact. Infected horses can develop a severe and fatal respiratory disease characterized by dyspnoea, vascular endothelial damage, pulmonary oedema and neurological signs. Experimental infection of cats and guinea pigs showed fatal respiratory disease. The transmission of virus from horse to horse and horse to man is through close contact. One person died of the disease due to respiratory failure and another one due to delayed onset of encephalitis. A number of diagnostic methods are available to provide prompt, sensitive and accurate diagnosis of the disease.

History: In 1994-95, a new viral zoonotic disease was identified in Queensland, Australia resulting in death of 2 human and 15 horses in two separate incidents. Again, in 1999 another horse died at the same place. The term 'Hendra' has been derived from the name of a place, suburb of Brisbane where first outbreak took place. In September 1994, a total of 15 horses died due to hyperacute respiratory disease. The trainer of the horse also died. In 1995, a farmer died of meningoencephalitis after having contact with a Hendra positive horse. In the 1999, a mare died of Hendra virus infections.

Etiology: The Hendra virus is under the new genus Megamyxovirus and family Paramyxoviridae. The Hendra virus was isolated in Vero cells from lung specimens and produced CPE within 3 days. The virus can grow in MDCK, BHK, RK13, LLC-MK2 and MRC5 cells. It also grows in cells derived from birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and in embryonated chicken eggs. The virus does not have haemagglutinin or neuraminidase activity. The virus is pleomorphic in shape, 38-600 nm in diameter and enveloped with two glycosylated transmembrane proteins of different lengths (15 and 18 nm). It differs from respirovirus and rubulavirus in not using sialic acid containing receptors. The virions are labile and infectivity is destroyed by heat, lipid solvents, non-ionic detergents, formaldehyde and oxidizing agents. Virions contain one molecule of negative sense ssRNA about 15 Kb long which codes 8 proteins. The Hendra virus is the largest of all known viruses under Paramyxoviridae. The genetic studies showed that Hendra virus is more similar to Morbillivirus or intermediate between Morbillivirus and Respirovirus. The amino acid homology between Hendravirus and Morbillivirus varies from 17-21% (P protein) to 40-42% (M protein) compared to 6-10% and 8% respectively for other members of Paramyxoviridae. A new Hendra like virus has been identified as a cause of respiratory and neurological disease in pigs and humans in Malaysia, called Nipah virus, after a village where the first human case occurred. (The amino acid homology of N protein between Hendra and Nipah is 92%, whereas in case of P&V it is 80-85%). Like, Hendra virus, the Nipah virus is thought to have emerged from a fruit bat (Pteropus hypomelanus).

Introduction

The International Patent Classification, commonly known as the IPC, is based on an international multi-lateral treaty administered by World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). This treaty is called the Strasbourg Agreement concerning the IPC, which was concluded in 1971 and came into force on October 7, 1975. The Agreement aimed to overcome the difficulties caused by using diverse national patent classification system. The common classification system defined by the Agreement is applied to patent and utility model documents. The Agreement is open to States party to the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property.

The apricot, Prunus armeniaca, L. is a species of Prunus, classified with the plum in the subgenus Prunus. Apricot is believed to have been originated in North-east China and later spread to several parts of the world. The important apricot producing countries are China, Turkey, Italy, Spain, Greece, USA, Morocco, France, Romania, Iraq, Bulgaria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, India and Australia. It has a great concern to farmers and seed producing agencies where the disease is high and average yields are low and where more food is needed to feed the ever-increasing population. So, it is important to test the seeds for disease organism before they are sown in the field and to avoid harmful organisms traveling from infected to non-infected areas within a country or across international boundaries.

Introduction

Farm animals have been raised and chosen specifically for the production of meat and dairy over the years. The livestock business suffers significant f inancial losses as a result of farm animal infertility. If the open span is extended by one estrous cycle as a result of infertility, this explains the 20–25 day loss of output in addition to the expense of treatment, missed work, etc. Farm animals can become infertile for a variety of reasons, including nutritional deficiencies, physiological disorders, and viral infections. These factors can act alone or in concert.

Livestock contributes significantly to the growth and development of agricultural sector by providing a rich source of high quality products such as milk, meat and eggs and by supporting livelihood of more than two third of rural population. To alleviate the concerns raised by a rapidly growing demand of food security and the need of ensuring sustainability of natural resources, we need to better understandthe ways which wouldspeed up commercialization of livestock production so that it can contribute effectively to the bio-economy. Azoles play a crucial role in combating fungal infections in humans and animals. They inhibit the synthesis of ergosterol, a vital component of fungal cell membranes, thereby disrupting fungal growth and proliferation. Additionally, azoles are used in agriculture to protect crops from fungal diseases, contributing to higher yields and improved food security.

Toxicological Concerns

While azoles have proven effective in controlling fungal infections, their use raises concerns due to potential adverse effects on human health and the environment. The toxicity of azoles stems from several factors, including their mode of action, chemical properties, and metabolic pathways.

The radiographic appearance of various tissues is influenced by a number of factors which determine the character of X-rays.  Various exposure factors control the radiographic dentsity, detail and contrast: milliamperage (mA), time (sec), kilovoltage (kV), focal spot/film distance (FFD) and object-film distance (OFD), thickness and nature of the part radiogaphed, speed and type of film and intensifying screens, temperature and time of developing, grid type, incoming line voltage, make and type of X-ray machine. Of these, first five exposure factors (milliamperage (mA), time (sec), kilovoltage (kV), focal spot/film distance (FFD) and object-film distance (OFD) are very important as radiographic technique chart may be worked out by varying one or more of the five factors.  These exposure factors are integral to image quality and should, therefore, to be adjusted appropriately in order to achieve a diagnostic radiograph of optimal quality (image contrast, brightness and clarity).

About 60-70% of total food grain production is retained and stored by farmers for household consumption, use as seed, feed for cattle and payment of wages to labours etc. in our country. Yet the quality of grains stored is not so good, and hence, preserving the harvested crops without loss or damage has always been a problem of national importance. This study was conducted in Jabalpur district of Madhya Pradesh state. A tribal block namely Kundam was selected for study purpose. The responses of 120 women were recorded in pre-tested structural schedule through interview. Rural women are an important source of information on the use of indigenous practices for grain storage. The data reveals that the majority of respondents are using dry leaves of Neem, dry onion bulb, wheat straw, Nirgudi leaves, roots of bach etc. for storage of grain at household level. In our country, indigenous practices of grain storage have always been and are still followed, because it is supposed that these practices are useful in control of grain loss.

Nanotechnology is a field of applied science focused on the design, synthesis, characterization and application of materials and devices on the nanoscale. It is a sub classification of technology in colloidal science, biology, physics, chemistry and other scientific fields and involves the study of phenomena and manipulation of material at the nanoscale. This is involved in the creation of useful materials, devices, and systems used to manipulate matter at an incredibly small scale; between 1 and 100 nanometers. With nanotechnology, a large set of materials with distinct properties (optical, electrical, or magnetic) can be fabricated. Nanotechnologically improved products rely on a change in the physical properties when the feature sizes are shrunk.

Homoeopathic treatment is based on an overall understanding of the symptoms in the body and mind created by a sickness. Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of the homoeopathic science of healing, after years of experiment and trial, came to finding that symptom - similarity is the curative method of medically curable diseases. The aforesaid indicates the importance of symptoms in the diagnosis and treatment in homoeopathy. If a drug creates a symptom during the course of proving, then it can be cured by a potencised dose of the drug; whatever may be the name of the disease. For instance, in proving GLONOINE produces a bursting, throbbing sensation in the head in a healthy person. Conversely any surging of the blood to the head requires GLONOINE. This can happen in a sun - stroke, in high blood pressure, in cerebro - spinal meningitis. KALI BICROMICUM produces in proving, a tough, stringy discharge of mucus. In homoeopathy, KALI BICROMICUM cures a similar discharge whether from the nose inwards from mouth, from fauces, from pharynx, from larynx, trachea, bronchi, vagina, and uterus or from any mucus membrane. CACTUSGRANDIFLORUS produces in pure form and gross doses, constriction of the heat and a constriction, anywhere in the body, which is like an iron band being tightened. The same sensation of constriction leads us to the use of CACTUS in a homoeopathic dose and it need not be confined to the heart. There can be constriction of the scalp, in the oesophagus, in the chest, in the abdomen, bladder, uterus, vagina or rectum.

Solid wastes, which are left after the fermentation process is complete, may be potential sources for use as fertilizers and feed stuffs.

I. Antibiotic Fermentation Wastes

Antibiotics are produced by microoganisms and have capacity, in dilute solution, to inhibit the growth or even destroy the other microorganisms. They are produced on a large scale using fermentation process except chloroamphenicol which has been produced synthetically since 1948. Solid wastes remaining after the liquid containing the antibiotic has been extracted from the fermentation broth need to utilised. This is usually done by filtration. The solids are a heterogeneous mixture of hyphae of the producing organism, unused media, defoaming oils and metabolic products of the micro-organisms, the most important of which is residual antibiotic. The levels of residual antibiotic can vary a great deal.
