4.1. Introduction
The agricultural sector plays a vital role in a nation’s economic development. It has been a key driver of prosperity in advanced economies and remains essential for the progress of developing nations. In regions with low per capita real income, agriculture and other primary industries are given high priority. As Dr. Bright Singh emphasizes, “An increase in agricultural production, along with a rise in the per capita income of the rural population, fosters industrialization and urbanization, thereby boosting demand for industrial goods.”
The historical trajectory of England provides clear evidence that the Agricultural Revolution preceded and laid the foundation for the Industrial Revolution. Similarly, in the United States and Japan, agricultural advancement has played a pivotal role in fostering industrialization. Many developing nations, in their pursuit of economic growth, have recognized the limitations of an excessive focus on industrialization as a sole strategy for achieving higher per capita real income.
Industrial and agricultural development are not substitutes but rather complementary forces that mutually reinforce each other in terms of both inputs and outputs. Empirical observations indicate that enhanced agricultural productivity and output significantly contribute to a nation’s overall economic progress. Therefore, prioritizing the further development of the agricultural sector is both rational and essential.

ABSTRACT

Agriculture is an important sector of Indian economy that contributes about 17% to the total GDP and provides employment to over 60% of the population. But, the villages are becoming poorer and poorer and only older generations are left there to do the agricultural operations. During the past two years, cost of food items like grains, pulses, oil and vegetables are increasing, month after month. Family farming is the best approach to produce agricultural products economically, utilizing locally available resources and crop residues and manpower very efficiently and sustainably. Family farming is a way of life” - there are unique advantages - the security of access and control over resources, meeting multiple needs of the family – food and income, the relationships with nature, the bonding with the past, present and future; ensuring freedom from external exploitation as well as freedom to do your own way. Family farms as multipurpose enterprises have been serving as buffers in times of disasters, as glue of social bonding, often functioning as a ’value web’ between farming families and communities. The United Nations defines youth as young men and women from age 15 to 24. The present situation of rural youth in developing countries can generally be characterized by illiteracy, lack of educational and training opportunities, unemployment, under-employment and the flight of large numbers of rural youth to the cities. There are serious challenges too – stifling and non supportive policy environment, lack of extension system to handle the farmer’s distinct needs and capacities, and lastly ‘converting’ family farms to be ‘business like’ models. However, successful pilots can become big impact programmes, for instance, as in Andhra Pradesh, through NGO-GO collaboration. Hence, rural youth need to be prepared in: (a) improving their capabilities to produce food and to conserve productive resources in the rural environment, (b) improving skills and abilities in undertaking income-generating activities in rural areas, (c) relieving population pressure and improving nutrition and the well-being of farming families and (d) developing leadership and the ability to work well with others in group and community situations.

Present work was aimed to determine the antibacterial activity and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of active crude extracts of selected cyanobacterial species. Nine cyanobacterial strains viz. Anabaena variabilis, A. fertilissima, Nostoc muscorum, N. punctiforme, N. linckia, N. commune, Spirulina platensis, Westiellopsis prolifica and Hapalosiphon sp. belonging to family; Nostocaceae, Oscillatoriaceae and Stigonemataceae were selected from the herbarium of Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, and maintained in BG-11 growth medium throughout the study in the laboratory.

Maintenance

When an animal is being fed for growth, fattening, milk secretion or other productive function, a considerable part of its feed is utilized for supporting body processes which are vital, irrespective of new tissue or product is being formed. This demand for feed is referred to as the “Maintenance requirement”; because it includes the amount needed to keep intact the tissues of animal which is not growing, working or yielding any product. There would be tissue break down with the accompanying loss in weight, leading to undesirable consequences, provided such need for feed is not met.

The fasting catabolism

The fasting animal doing no external work and not producing in any way is still carrying on a variety of internal physiological processes, which are absolutely vital for life. Obviouslythe nutrients required to support theseinternal activities must come from the break down of body tissue itself. This destruction of body tissue is termed as the “Fasting catabolism” and this can be measured in terms of the waste products discarded through the various paths of excretion.

Energy catabolism of fasting

The energy expended in the fasting animal is converted into heat, which can be measured in direct or indirect calorimeter. For measuring fasting catabolism at its minimumvalue, it becomes imperative to eliminate all the influences leading to increase heat production above the minimum expenditure compatible with the maintenance of life in so far as possible. Such a minimum value is called “Basal-metabolism” or BMR.Theconditions essential fora true minimumvalue of fasting catabolism can most nearly be attained in human being are specified as following :

ABSTRACT

Interaction of cationic dye acridine orange with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) isolated from Rhizobium strains specific (IC59) and non-specific (TAL1000) to chickpea (Cicer arietinum.L L.) has been investigated by spectrophotometric measurements. The strain specific (IC59) lipopolysaccharide induced decrease in absorbance of the α-band of acridine orange at 490 nm and finally upon further addition of LPS /Dye ratio in the range of 30~60 giving rise to α-polymeric metachromatic band at 660 nm. In contrast the LPS from non-specific strain (TAL1000) induces a decrease in absorbance at the α-band till LPS / Dye ratios are 0~50. This suggest that the anionic changes of strain specific LPS is different from non-specific strain enabling formation of large acridine orange aggregate on the surface of specific strain.

Longan (Dimocarpus longan Lour), belongs to the family, Sapindaceae. It is a hardy subtropical fruit tree very similar to litchi in habit and appearance. The longan is native to southern China, in the provinces of Kwangtung, Kwangsi, Schezwan and Fukien. The longan is less important to the Chinese as an edible fruit, more widely used than the lychee in Oriental medicine. It is also now widely grown in Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Vietnam, Myanmar, Indonesia, Malyasia, USA, New Zealand and Australia. The longan was introduced into India in 1798. In India it is mainly grown in Western ghats, Assam and West Bengal.

Cultivars: Most important cultivars of major Longan growing areas of world are Ilao, Wai, and Fuhko No. 2.

Food Uses

Although longan is mainly used for dessert purpose. It can be dried, frozen or canned. Preserved longans are considered by many as superior to preserved litchi, the flavour being more delicate. Longans are much eaten fresh, out-of-hand, but some have maintained that the fruit is improved by cooking. In China, the majority are canned in sirup or dried. The canned fruits were regularly shipped from Shanghai to the United States in the past. Today, they are exported from Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The dried longan product is black, leathery and smoky in flavor and is mainly used to prepare an infusion drunk for refreshment. A liqueur is made by macerating the longan flesh in alcohol. (Morton, 1987).

Ion Exchange Defined

By ion exchange is meant “the reversible process by which cations and anions are exchanged between solid and liquid phases, and between solid phases, if in close contact with each other”. For exchange of cations the term “base exchange” is exclusively used.

• In male animals, endocrine regulation of reproduction is mainly controlled by pituitary gonadotrophins and gonadal androgens. It is not same as in females as there is only negative feedback controls in case of male while it is positively as well as negatively feedback control in females. In other words the synchrony of pituitary gonadotrophins with gonads in male is non cyclic while in female it is cyclic i.e. after castration the pulse frequency of LH and FSH is retained
• Sex Hormones are sex specific e.g. estrogen and progesterone works primarily in females and testosterone in males but sex specificity is limited as far as sexual behaviour is concern. As estrogen injection in castrated buck recovers the maleness while testosterone injection in ovariectomized female maintain the receptivity for male up to certain extent.
• Hypothalamus acts as interface between nervous system and endocrine system. GnRH synthesized in neurons in hypothalamus, released at nerve endings episodic manner and transferred via hypophyseal portal system to anterior pituitary to stimulate the secretion of gonadotrophins.

Macromutations were observed in the present set of experiments, under all the treatments (Table 12-14).

As the dosage of gamma rays increased, there was a decrease in their frequency. EB showed less mutation frequency than gamma rays and EMS. But in combination with gamma rays it produced more frequency of macromutations. As the dose increased the frequency also increased. EMS as single treatment produced macromutations like that of gamma rays, but in combination with gamma rays it produced more frequency than gamma rays as individual treatment. However, as the dosage increased the mutation frequency was also reduced. Medium dose combination produced more mutations than higher and lower dose combinations of gamma rays + EMS.

On M₂ plant basis, gamma rays in combination with EB produced the maximum viable mutation rate (4.04), whereas gamma rays individually induced a maximum rate of 2.23 and EB as a sole mutagen generated a maximum rate of 0.79. But EMS as a single treatment showed 1.69 as viable mutation rate, in combination with gamma rays it generated as much as 2.49. Combination treatment showed a less than synergistic effect.

The increase in size and weight of farm animals is the simplest manifestation. The life in the animals begins with a single cell weighing practically nothing, then grow to reach mature weights ranging from 1 kg to 800 kg or more for a bison. Practically there may be deviation from above pattern due to environmental and nutritional features. Retardation of growth may be observed due to feed scarcity during cold or dry seasons. Whereas, idealized pattern of growth would be deviated in the growth rate of animals, whenreared undernatural (extensive) conditions;exhibitinginterrupted curves. While growing, development of various parts of the animal, defined as anatomical components (for example legs), as organs (for example liver) or as tissues (for example muscle) grow at different rates. By the time of maturity, the proportions of the animal changes. For example in cattle:

• At birth: Head is relatively large, 6.2 % of the body weight. • At body weight of 100 kg: Head is 4.5 % of body weight.

Tax base : The thing or amount to which a tax rate applies. To collect income tax, for example, you need a meaningful definition of income. Definitions of the tax base can vary enormously, over time and among countries, especially when tax breaks are taken into account. As a result, a country with a comparatively high tax rate may not have a high tax burden if it has a more narrowly defined tax base than other countries. In recent years, the political unpopularity of high tax rates has lead many governments to lower rates and at the same time broaden the tax base, often leaving the tax burden unchanged.

India is the largest goat producing countries in the world exhibiting rich diversity between and within goat breeds. The implementation of a genetic improvement programme requires a clear breed-based breeding objectives and selection criteria, tailored to the needs of goat farming community. Indigenous goat breeds bear a great degree of adaptability for climatic stress, tropical diseases and low quality feed resources, require low inputs for enhancing productivity, thus, little investment along with use of high merit bucks bring a great change in the economy of the farmers. There are currently 37 recognized goat breeds in the country which are kept mostly in small herds on extensive or partial semi-intensive feeding system. Productivity of Indigenous goats, however, observed less than their actual genetic potential and attributed to low input system, lack of suitable breed specific structural genetic improvement programme and poor adoption of technologies. A buck is the most important animal in the herd. A breeding male or buck contributes 50% of the genetic merit of the herd and also determine the future improvement rate.

Introduction

The nurseryman needs some records if he is going to plan for remunerative returns and establish himself as a reputable business. Ideally, a nursery planner should be able to estimate how long it takes to lift saplings or how much seed is required, or how many cuttings he can accommodate in a glasshouse, as well as how much scion wood is required for grafting a particular plot. In nurseries, specific registers must be maintained to keep track of day-to-day activities, such as pedigrees and operations. In case of large nurseries, these records are required by law to satisfy inspection authorities, calculate taxes, detect theft, or discourage it.

Corynebacteria are gram positive, non-acidfast, non-motile, non-capsulated, small pleomorphic rods. They frequently occur in rods, coccoid, club and filamentous shape. The term coryneform which refers to the pleomorphic club shape of these gram-positive bacteria. (From Coryne – meaning club). The major pathogen is Corynebacterium diptheria. Which causes diptheria in children. Corynebacteria associated with animals are called diphtheroids.

Morphology
They are gram-positive slender rod with a tendancy to clubbing at one or both ends; they are non-sporing, non-motile, non-capsulated and non-acidfast. They have granules composed of (high energy phosphate stores) – polymetaphosphate. The granules are more strongly gram positive than the rest of the bacterial cell. Stained with Loeffler’s methylene blue, the granules take up a reddish purple color and hence they are called metachromatic granules. They are called as volutinor Babes Ernst Granules. They are often situated at the poles of the bacilli and are called polar bodies. Special stains,
such as Albert’s, Neisser’s and Ponder’s have been devised for demonstrating the granules clearly. Stained smears from animal tissues often reveal groups of cells in parallel (Palisades) or cells at sharp angles to each other (Chinese letter or Cuneiform arrangement). This is due to the incomplete separation of the daughter cells after binary fission. Rhodococcus equi can appear as a gram-positive coccus or a rod or club shaped form arranged in clusters. It is capsulated and sometimes weakly acid fast.

In sericulture it is the larval life that is of direct importance to the rearer since he has to take care of the worms very carefully. The larval life may last from 20-24 days in the case of the multivoltine species in tropical areas or 24-28 days in the case of uni- and bi-voltine races in temperate areas, being shorter under warmer summer and autumn conditions, and somewhat longer under cooler spring conditions. During the larval life the worm moults or casts off its skin four times to be able so as to grow. There are also varieties of worms which moult three and five times but they are not of importance economically. In view of the four intervening moults, the larval life is divided into five distinct stages or instars (Fig.14.2) which are referred to popularly as five different ages. The first three instars are referred to as young ages and the fourth and fifth instars as late ages.
14.2 Moulting
Each larval instar can be broadly divided into two phases i.e., the feeding phase and the moulting phase. After feeding voraciously and having attained full growth for the particular instar the worm loses its appetite and the larvaprepares to moult and cast off its old skin. Prior to each moulting, the larva  stops feeding and rests with its head held up. The lustrous body skin gradually becomes translucent, loose and wrinkled and the worm becomes dull in appearance and wanders about in search of a resting place. It emits a silky substance with which it fixes itself to dry leaves. The moulting periods last for 20 hours being shortest in the second moult, followed by the first, third and fourth. This resting for moulting is often referred to as going to sleep and the coming out of the worm from moult as waking up. During the moulting period the worms should not be disturbed so that the process of moulting is not interfered with and uniform moulting is ensured.

Bunding is a traditional yet effective soil conservation method that involves constructing embankments or barriers along land contours to manage water flow and reduce soil erosion. These embankments, known as bunds, are particularly beneficial in semi-arid and erosion-prone areas, where water conservation and soil stability are essential for sustainable agriculture.
Bunds slow down surface runoff, allowing water to infiltrate the soil rather than washing away valuable topsoil. This not only reduces erosion but also improves soil moisture retention and supports crop growth. Bunds can be made from local materials such as soil, stones, or a combination of both.
TYPES OF BUNDING
There are several types of bunding, each with its unique features and benefits. Let’s explore the most common ones:
Contour Bunding
Contour bunding is a well-established soil conservation technique that involves constructing embankments along lines of equal elevation across sloping terrain. These structures, often equated with level terraces, are designed to intercept surface runoff, thereby reducing soil erosion and improving moisture retention in cultivated lands. Originating as a famine relief initiative in Maharashtra, India, contour bunding has since proven to be an effective and sustainable method for preserving agricultural productivity in hilly and semi-arid regions.
This practice is particularly suited to a wide range of permeable soils, including alluvial, red lateritic, shallow and medium black soils, as well as deep black cotton soils. However, challenges such as soil cracking in black cotton soils may compromise bund integrity, necessitating periodic repair and upkeep.

INTRODUCTION

It is becoming obvious that the interest of youth in agriculture is declining and this trend is likely to continue if we do not look into this seriously. A large number of young people are migrating to urban centers in the hope of getting employment and for a better life. This is due to lack of jobs and opportunities in rural areas, and a view that working in farming is low status and does not offer good future prospects. Young people play an important role and are required in the agriculture sector. But education or training programs are not always readily available, technologies are not accessible, inputs may be scarce, and other vital services are not accessible. Young people now-a-days are becoming less connected with their food, often making little or no association between the food they eat, who is behind it and it is produced. They may not see beyond the store or market, nor make the connection between the food they are eating and the efforts made by farmers to grow it. This growing disconnection with agriculture implies an uncertain future for sustainable food production to feed the growing population. It is important to make the link between food and agriculture visible. The important role young people play in farming needs to be understood as agriculture is sustainable if it can attract future generation farmers. In fact the young people are the future farmers. Efforts are required to discourage the overwhelming tendency of young people to move out of farming in search of a more comfortable life and better income. It is true that there are major challenges, farming is not an easy or a more glamorous option, but we should be exploring ways of doing agriculture in a sustainable and rewarding manner.

On a large scale, feed nutrients are converted into milk constituents by considerable biochemical and physiological processes.
