Origin

Beet root originated from Beta vulgaris L. ssp. maritima by hybridization with B. patula. Crop has site of origin probably in Europe. Earlier types were with long roots like that of carrot. Beet root, sugar beet and palak belong to species B. vulgaris and are cross compatible.

Botany

Beet root is a biennial, producing a fleshy elongated hypocotyls and a rosette of leaves in first year and flowers in second year. Upper portion of fleshy root develops from hypocotyls and basal part from tap root. Concentric rings seen in cross section of root are as a result of alternate formation of vascular tissues and storage parenchyma tissues. Root skin colour varies from orange red to dark purple red. Colour of beet root is due to presence of red violet pigments of â cyanins and a yellow pigment, â xanthin. It has extensive tap root system and tap root grows as deep as 3m. The biofertilizer technology has paved way for the manufacturers and entrepreuners to establish a biofertilizer production unit due to an increasing demand and awareness among farmers. Biofertilizer production units have already been started with most of them in the southern states of India. The biofertilizers can be produced using different kinds of carrier materials (peat, coal, lignite, clays, inorganic soil), organic materials (composts, soybean meal, wheat bran, sawdust, etc.), or inert materials (e.g., vermiculite, perlite, kaolin, bentonite, silicates). Natural carriers like peat, plant waste materials, composts, sawdust, sludge lignite, clays, coal, vermiculite, perlite and bentonite and mixture of organic and inorganic materials may also be used.

The Government of India is also encouraging a low cost technology by providing a subsidy to establish a biofertilizer production unit . The major equipment’s and other materials required for a biofertilizer production unit with the capacity of 150 metric tonnes/annum are given below

The selection of breeding bucks in relation to maximizing the reproductive efficiency depends upon males. AI permits intense selection of sires with exceptional merits and provides opportunity to exploit the value of superior sires. Young males can be trained for exhibiting sexual behaviors and semen collection through the uses of male, anoestrus doe or oestrus doe as dummy. Successful AI depends on precise management of semen collection, its frequency and use. The semen collection implies mounting a teaser doe or a dummy. Artificial vagina (AV) and electro-ejaculator (EE) are the two methods for semen collection in bucks. AV method is being used as universal method for routine semen collection whereas electro-ejaculation is generally used for collecting semen from untrained and valuable sires incapable of service. Moreover, this method of collection is painful for the animals. Semen evaluation should be rapid and effective so that collected semen samples can be processed for initial quality which ultimately affects the fertility. There are several tests for the assessment of semen quality but no single test is reliable to give definite prediction of the fertility.

Antennae are paired, highly mobile, segmented appendages present between or below or behind the compound eyes. The antennae arise from the 2nd or antennal segment of the head possessing nerves coming from deutocerebrum of the brain. Antennae are absent in order protura and class Arachnida whereas 2 pairs of antenna (antennules) are present in class Crustacea.

Antennae are set in a socket of the cranium called antennal socket (anetnnifer) and connected by an articulatory membrane which allows free movement of antenna. Antennal socket is provided with an antennal suture. Although antennae vary widely in shape and function, all of them can be divided into three basic parts:

• Scape

• Basal segment, larger than other segments and articulates with the head capsule. It is provided with intrinsic muscles.

• Pedicel

• Second segment of antennae. In this, mass of cells called Johnston organ (auditory) is present (eg. houseflies). The above two segments have intrinsic muscles ie., their own muscles. In honey bee, wasps pedicel forms the pivot between scape and flagellum.

• Flagellum/Clavola

• The remaining segments or annuli or flagellomeres are called flagellum which lack individual muscles. Flagellum is supplied with many sensory receptors that are connected by nerves to brain. Flagellum is further divided into three parts

Classification

Classification is ordering of organisms into groups (or sets) on the basis of their relationships that are of associations by contiguity, similarity or both.

Classification of living things is an attempt to interpret nature. It attempts to bring together the kinds that are alike and closely related and to separate those that are unlike and unrelated.

Animals might be classified in various ways but the classification is based primarily on structural characters. Those animals with certain structures in common are classified into one group, and those with other structures into other group. Thus the animal kingdom is divided into a dozen or so major groups called phyla (singular, phylum); each phylum has a name, and its members have certain structural characters in common. The characters used to distinguish phyla include the number of cells, symmetry, body form and segmentation, the nature of the appendages, and the arrangement of the internal organs.

On the basis of degree of complexity, and probably evolutionary sequence, the animal phyla are usually arranged in a series from the lower phyla to the higher ones.

It has been repeatedly proving that Science& Technology that is close and in harmony with nature is proving winner in the long run. If the past 60 years led to the Green Revolution in agriculture which often became Greed Revolution, the next 60 year should be the emergence of love for nature, diversity and Sustainable Green Revolution. The two goals – Sustainability and Productivity are inter-related.

We are also aware that globally and nationally the rich-poor divide is growing and though world produces enough food, nearly 800 million people remain food insecure. Among 8 millennium goals, eradication of poverty and hunger and environmental sustainability are perhaps the most prominent and complimentary.

ABSTRACT

Engaging youth in agriculture has been a prominent topic recently and has risen up the development agenda, as there is growing concern worldwide and also in India that young people have become disenchanted with agriculture. Over 60 per cent of the world’s rural population is made of youth, with half of them being young women and girls. Due to their limited access to assets (in particular land), markets, finance and education and skills training, rural youth are often unemployed or work informally – often in unpaid, very low-skilled, insecure and sometimes hazardous jobs. If young people living in rural areas do not find enough incentives, profitable economic opportunities and attractive environments in which to live and work, they will continue to migrate to cities. This trend would not only contribute to the mega urbanization and growing urban unemployment that is already under way, but is expected to affect global food production: who will then feed the global population that is projected to reach 9.2 billion people by 2050. With most young people around 85% living in developing countries, where agriculture is likely to provide the main source of income it is vital that young people are connected with farming. Currently around the world we’re living in an era where rapid urbanisation has led to a decline in rural populations and for the first time ever the majority of the world’s population lives in a city.

The post-independence history of our agriculture can be broadly grouped into four periods. Before describing them, I should mention that during the colonial era famines were frequent and Famine Commissions were abundant. The growth rate in food production from 1900 to 1947 was hardly 0.1 per cent. Most of the important institutional developments in agriculture emanated from the recommendations of Famine Commissions. The great Bengal Famine of 1942-43 provided the backdrop to India’s independence. It is to the credit of Independent India that famines of this kind have not been allowed to occur, although our population has grown from 350 million in 1947 to over a billion now.

• This step includes individual units and overall requirement for diet ingredients. After defining the objective of study and diet formulation, requirements of nutrient intake are defined to achieve that objective

• While definingtherequirement, socialenvironment, internal, external and economical conditions should be taken into consideration.Nutrient requirements can be established by the empirical method and factorial method.

• The empiricalmethodisbasedonexperimental studies whereas the factorial method identifies the various functions within the animal that defines the needs of nutrient ingredients.

Seed

• In broad sense, seed is a material which is used for planting or regeneration purpose. However, scientifically, seed is a fertilized matured ovule together covered with seed coat is called seed or it is a propagating material i.e., part of agriculture, sericulture, silviculture and horticultural plants used for sowing or planting purpose.
• Seed is a mature integumented megasporangium or mature ovule consisting of embryonic plants together with store food material covered by a protective coat.
• Seeds are fertilised, mature ovules, the result of sexual reproduction in plants. Not all plants produce seed (some produce spores or reproduce vegetatively) but most of the higher plants produce seed.
• It is the product of the ripened ovule of gymnosperm and angiosperm plants which occurs after fertilization and some growth within the mother plant.
• The formation of the seed completes the process of reproduction in plants (started with the development of flowers and pollination), with the embryo developed from the zygote and the seed coat from the integuments of the ovule.

Introduction

The isolation of mutants is often critical to the study of cellular process, especially when such studies are performed at the molecular level. The phenotype of a particular mutant is attributable to the loss of a particular cellular function; the loss of that function is actually attributable to a mutation in a gene necessary for that function. In this experiment we will isolate auxotrophic mutant which can grow only if provided with specific amino acid. For example arg^- mutant have lost the catalytic function of an enzyme involved in arginine biosynthesis due to mutation in the structural gene that encodes the enzyme.

Mutagenic Agent

Mutation is an alteration in the coding sequence of a gene. Mutation occur spontaneously at a frequency of about 10^-8 per bacterial cell per generation. The rate of mutation can be increased with mutagenic agents. Mutants are strains with any structural alteration of their DNA that gives rise to a mutant phenotype. Mutagens are chemical agents (e.g. nitorsoguanidine, 5 bromouracil), physical (e.g.UV) and biological agents (e.g. trnasposons) that cause mutation to occur.

Cumbu Napier hybrid grass is a cross between Cumbu (Pennisetum glaucum) and Napier grass (P. purpureum Schumach.), widely cultivated across India, Africa, Sri Lanka and South East Asian countries. The advent of frozen semen has further revolutionized this technique. Presently, use of sex- sorted-semen in cattle breeding is also coming into vogue. Contrary to cattle and buffalo, use of AI in small ruminants has not gained such impetus.

It has been reported that lower pregnancy rates were obtained when ewes and does are bred with frozen or extended liquid semen using intra-vaginal or intracervical technique of insemination. The reason being anatomy of the cervix of sheep and goats; cervix is long and tortuous with presence of 4-7 cervical rings. Furthermore, these cervical rings are directed caudally hindering the lumen of the cervix thereby causing hindrance (more prominent in sheep) while passing the AI gun during intra-cervical or trans-cervical AI (TCAI). There are several reports which support the fact that, as the depth of semen deposition into the cervix increases, the pregnancy rates also improve due to availability of a greater number of motile sperms for fertilization.

Canavalia ensiformis is a vine that originated in South and Central America and has since spread throughout the tropics and subtropics of the planet. It’s used as a food source, fodder, and a cover crop or green manure. As a minor vegetable crop, jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis), commonly known as horse bean, is extensively dispersed in the tropics and subtropics. Pollinating insects such as many species of bees and butterflies use their color vision to maximize success in foraging. The name “thyme” originates from the Greek word meaning “to fumigate” or “thumus,” which symbolizes courage.
