In recent years, the demand for rabbit meat and products has been steadily increasing in India. This has led to a growing interest in rabbit farming and research in the country. The future of rabbit research in India looks promising, with ongoing efforts to improve breeding techniques, nutrition, and disease management. Some of the key areas of focus include developing high-yielding breeds that are well adapted to the Indian climate and improving feed formulations to optimize growth and productivity. As there is also a rising interest in rabbit fur production, research is being conducted on ways to enhance fur quality and increase its market value. Furthermore, studies are being carried out on the potential health benefits of consuming rabbit meat as a source of lean protein.

Drying generally refers to the method of removal of moisture from the food under natural condition such as sunlight and wind for example open sun drying, shade drying etc. Dehydration refers to a process of removal of moisture by application of artificial heat under controlled conditions of temperatures humidity and air flow. It also represents drying of agricultural commodity to dry state. For drying, single thin layer of fruit and vegetables, either whole or sliced after primary pre-treatments is spread on the trays which are then placed inside the dehydrator or in the open sun for drying. In the dehydrator initial temperature is generally kept at 43oC which is then gradually increased to 66-71oC for fruits.

Lavender is a small genus of perennial aromatic herbs, semi-shrubs, or shrubs. It comprises approximately 28 species, with three species being extensively utilized for extracting essential oils:
True Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia): One of the most important essential oils used in the perfumery industry.
Spike Lavender (Lavandula latifolia): Yields inferior oil, less fragrant than true lavender and rosemary.
Lavandin (Lavandula hybrida): is a hybrid of true lavender and spike lavender, possessing characteristics of both parents. The essential oil extracted from Lavandin combines the sweet, floral fragrance of true lavender with the camphoraceous harshness of spike lavender. Although Lavandin oil has a unique fragrance profile, it is considered inferior to true lavender oil in terms of quality and finesse.
Origin and distribution
Lavender originates from the Mediterranean basin, typically thriving in rocky, calcareous areas. Its distribution spans North Africa, the Mediterranean, Europe, and Western India. Lavender has been cultivated since ancient times, with the Greeks and Romans being notable cultivators. The name "lavender" is derived from the Latin verb "lavare," meaning "to wash" or "to bathe."

In contrast to the traditional universities, agricultural universities have been entrusted with the Herculean task of technology dissemination at the grass root level such that the package of practices evolved by the agricultural scientists should reach out the end-users, viz. farmers , for adopting in the field, with consequent increment in the farm productivity and farmer’s income.

This unique mandate has been assigned to agricultural universities on the pattern of land grant colleges of the United States. Such vision and trust, envisaged by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and his devout lieutenants, herald creation of state agricultural universities (SAUs) in the early 1960s. The key role played by SAUs in the first green revolution and agricultural human resources development have been regarded as the milestones in the history of India post-independence, that made the country self-sufficient in food production and, in turn, to self reliance in milk, vegetables, fruits and inland fish production.

Information is a basic resource essential for individual and organization in order to survive and succeed in society. Floriculture is a technology driven industry needing technological advancement. The new technologies that are being developed at various places the world over, needs to be disseminated through proper and quick linkage between the researchers and the beneficiaries i.e. the farmers. This demand can be met out by information technology. Information is data put into a meaningful and useful text. Today, information technology (IT) is a metaresource and computers are being used as a metatool and a metamedia.

COMPONENTS OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

An information technology architecture is an integrated framework for acquiring and evolving IT to achieve strategic goals. It has both logical and technical components. Logical components include mission, functional and information requirements, system configurations and information flows. Technical components include IT standards and rules that will be used to implement the logical architecture.

Input devices: The advent of touch screen monitors has made it possible to develop user-friendly interface for farmers. It is now possible to capture and store good quality graphics and video clips with digital cameras.

Output devices: Output devices like monitor screen, printers and plotters, data projectors support high resolution and good quality output.

Processors: The processing speeds of computers have improved a lot these days. At present, Intel P-IV based processors @ 3.3 Ghz are available in the PC range.

Storage devices: To store substantial information at local level. Capacity of 40 GB and higher are common in hard disk devices, besides floppy disk drives and CDs; all making it possible to transfer large amount of data to locations which cannot be connected to networks quickly.

Introduction

e-Literacy as defined by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural organization (UNESCO) refers to the awareness, skills, understanding and reflective approaches necessary for an individual to operate comfortably in information-rich and IT enabled environments. Most definitions of e-literacy or digital literacy covers three abilities

• The ability to use digital technology, communication tools or networks to locate, evaluate, use and create information

• The ability to understand and use information in multiple formats from a wide range of sources when it is presented via computers

• The ability to perform tasks effectively in a digital environment

To promote e-literacy, every state in India has initiated a project in their own names. For example, in Kerala the e-literacy is promoted in the name of Project Akshaya. Initially, this project was started with a noble intention of making at least one member in each of 64 lakh families e-literate. The pilot project started in Malappuram, and was inaugurated by His Excellency Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, former President of India on 18th November 2002. 100% eLiteracy was achieved in eight districts in Phase 1 and the project has been roaring success. Nowhere has such a feat been attempted or accomplished. The vision and scope of the project is beyond comparison. The operations of Akshaya as unfolded so far consist of three distinct phases. The first phase is that of enabling the masses by imparting basic skill in computer operations and making them familiar with internet. This phase is the period of eLiteracy training. In the initial phase, the Akshaya ecentre imparts basic training that not only familiarizes people with the basics and the scope of IT, but also ensures hands-on-skill in operating a computer, using the Internet etc to at least one person in the 64 lakh families in the state that makes it the largest rural eliteracy training project worldwide. Malappuram is declared as the first eliterate district in India. Malappuram and Kannur districts were already declared 100% eliterate. Kollam, Kozhikode, Thrissur and Kasaragod districts achieved eliteracy above 90%. So far around 33 lakhs beneficiaries were trained.

To deal with such constraints and to boost the crop production, the methods of thinning and pruning provide efficient ways to train the growth of young plants and maintain the health of grown-up plants.

The selective removal of branches, buds or roots is termed as pruning [1]. If the plants are overcrowded in a confined space, the overall health of the crop decreases due to the competitive stress from the neighbouring plants. Thinning and pruning is done to improve the growth rate or health of the plants by decreasing the competitive stress. Thinning and pruning in agriculture is the sensible removal of plant parts such as flowers, shoots, its branches or other parts to correct or maintain that structure of the tree and control be directed growth of the crop. This practice covers the precise removal of the unhealthy and obstructive part of the plant branch, leaves, fruits, buds, fruits, etc. Pruning improves the quality and longevity of the crop, leading to quality produce and increased yield of the field. This also helps in increasing the size of the fruit as it increases the availability of nitrogen required for growing and stimulating growth of the crop. There are several factors that influence the amount of pruning to be done, i.e., age of the plant, condition of the bark and wood, growth characteristics, whether cup crop/plantation is permanent or seasonal [2]. Pruning is done for controlling the size of the plant, controlling the structure makeup of the plant, controlling and improving the light distribution of the plants by the selective removal of leaves to improve the quality of the fruits, removing the diseased parts of the plant and to regulate the fruit crop and increase the life of the tree.

Temperate Fruit Plants

Temperate fruit plants are requiring specific climate. They can tolerate both diurnal and seasonal wide fluctuations in temperature and are grown only where winter is distinctly cold. They require a specific chilling temperature for a certain period to break bud dormancy and to initiate the bud break. These fruit plants are generally deciduous and suitable for higher elevations as they can withstand frost. Examples are: apple, pear, plum, apricot, almond, peach, strawberry, walnut, pecan nut and cherry.

Classification of temperate fruits: Fruits can be classified on several bases, but their classification on the basis of climatic adaptability and morphological features.

The term bio-fertilizer is related with such microorganisms that they add, conserve and mobilize the plant nutrients in the soil. Excessive use of nonrenewable exhaustive petroleum product based chemicals in horticultural production system has residual effect on soil, environment and human health. Use of biofertilizers is ecofriendly, cost effective and organic based inputs such as botanical pesticides, FYM, vermicompost, biogas slurry, disease and pest resistant varieties in cultivation of horticultural crops for safeguarding soil health and quality production.

Biofertilizers are microorganisms, which are capable of mobilizing nutrients from unavailable form to available form through biological process. They are not only cost effective but also inexpensive source of plant nutrients. They do not require non-renewable source of energy during their production. Besides, improving crop growth and quality of the product by producing plant hormones and help in sustainable crop production through maintenance of soil productivity. They are also useful as biocontrol agents, as they control many plant pathogens.

Canals and waterways are the most important source for irrigation and have been identified as one of the most important aquatic resources for fish culture. The natural canal systems in the Sundarbans cover an area of 907.33 ha. Fisheries activities were planned in order to provide a source of livelihood to the underprivileged people of the cyclone-prone area of the Sundarbans.

Challenges and opportunities

Fisheries in the Sundarbans are poorly documented and less attention is given to producing fish from canals. Information on the trophic status of the canal habitat, biotic community structure, and hydrological parameters is also lacking. However, the villagers reported that the fish enter these canals from the source waters naturally, and form natural populations. The villagers residing beside the canal catch fish, especially during monsoon, and the women of the adjoining households often collect small indigenous fish (SIFs) or prawns through small dragnets or scoop nets for household consumption. The shared information of the villagers was utilised to sensitise them and convince them to initiate fish culture in these canals.

Mint belongs to the genus Mentha and is part of the Lamiaceae family, including popular herbs like basil, sage, and rosemary. There are several commercially grown mint species, each with unique chemical compositions, aromas, and uses.
Origin and distribution
Mint originated in the Mediterranean region and spread globally through natural and artificial means. Japanese mint is widely cultivated in Brazil, Paraguay, China, and India, while peppermint is grown in the USA, Morocco, Argentina, and Australia.
Botany
Japanese mint (Mentha arvensis) is a perennial, ascending herb that typically grows to a height of 60-80 cm, with the potential to reach up to 100 cm under favorable conditions. This herb is primarily propagated through its stolons, which enable it to spread and establish new plants. The leaves of Japanese mint are lanceolate-oblong in shape, featuring sharp teeth along their edges, and are supported by small petioles approximately 5 mm in length. The leaf lamina itself measures between 5 to 15 cm in length. Notably, the lower surface of the leaves is densely covered with hairy growths of glandular trichomes. The plant produces an abundance of small, purplish flowers in axillary and terminal verticillasters. These flowers are characterized by a corolla measuring 4-5 mm in length and a calyx that is narrowly deltoid and acuminate, measuring 2-3 mm. Japanese mint is sterile and does not produce seeds, relying solely on vegetative means of propagation.

Introduction

The arid region of India, constituting 12 m ha area  which occurs dominantly in the northwestern part of the country. The state of Rajasthan accounts for highest area (61%) followed by Gujarat (19.6%) Punjab (5%) and Haryana (4%) of the total geographical area of hot arid ecosystem. These areas experience an annual rainfall between 100-500 mm with the coefficient of variation 40-70 per cent. The mean annual rainfall in the western Rajasthan varies from less than 100mm in extreme western part of the Jaisalmer district to more than 400 mm in eastern part of the region. The high temperature during summers as high as 48^ºC and low in winters up to –3^ºC. High wind velocity  (10-13 km /hr) and high annual  evapo- transpiration  (1527 mm /year)  again gives a great threatening to the arable cropping in this region. The vagaries of monsoon in terms of its occurrence and distribution during the season has a wide variability >48 per cent with 30-35 days of average rainy days per year.

World Trade Organization (WTO) is an international body which deals with the “Rules of Trade” between nations on the basis of the agreements negotiated and signed by most of the world’s trading nations. These agreements are essentially contracts that bind governments to keep their trade policies within predefined limits. The goal is to help producers of goods and services, exporters and importers.

The purpose of WTO agreement is to help free flow of trade, serve as a forum for trade negotiations and to serve as a dispute settlement body. There are 5 broad principles of the trading system followed under WTO:

Soil consistency is a term used to designate the manifestation of different physical forces acting within the soil at various moisture levels. The consistency limits, also known as ‘Atterberg Limits’ (Atterberg, 1911; 12) are defined by the water content of the soil to create specified degree of consistency. These limits are – (i) Liquid limit or upper plastic limit, (ii) Plastic limit or lower plastic limit and (iii) Sticky limit.

The principle behind thinning and pruning is to admit more sunlight to the branches that bear fruit by the selective removal of the unproductive branches which obstruct the sunlight to fall on the productive branches to increase the productivity white and vitality of the plant to obtain optimum healed of good quality crop [3]. Young trees are pruned so that they acquire the desired shape. In old trees it is done to stimulate flowering. In plants bearing fruits or crops, pruning is done to allow adequate sunlight to fall on fruit bearing branches, so that quality crop is produced. Very old plants heavy pruning is done to restore the vigour of the plant. It is also done so that the loss of nutrients being shared by the diseased peak or shading branches is reduced. The use of robotics and other automated systems can aid in the precise pruning and thinning of the crop. This will also automate the whole process and will save their requirement on the extensive manpower which ultimately saves time.

10.1 Application Efficiency and Irrigation Uniformity

All irrigation systems have some non-uniformity. This non-uniformity influences yields and irrigation efficiency especially application efficiency. If the net amount of water applied during irrigation is the same as that required to fill the soil water deficit, then because the distribution of water is never perfect, half of the field will receive too much water while the other half will receive too less water. In such a context, a farmer will try to apply more irrigation water to his field so that a larger fraction of the field has an adequate amount. This will tend to have higher percolation and runoff and thereby declining the application efficiency. An alternative to adding extra water is to improve the uniformity of water application. A major advantage when the uniformity is improved is that the amount of deficit in the area under irrigation is reduced and the potential for water logging and salinization is also reduced.

Introduction

The almond is an important temperate nut fruit with widespread popularity for its kernels throughout the world. It is native to the central Asian mountain areas (India, Iran and Pakistan). Apart from raw consumption as an edible kernel of the drupe, it also has industrial applications as a major ingredient in many manufactured products. The kernels are a rich source of fat (58.9%), protein (20.8 %), carbohydrates (10.5%), and a rich source of Vitamin E. Almond oil contains 49% oil, 62% oleic acid, 24% linoleic acid, and 6% palmitic acid. Its oil, called badamroghan, is considered to have high nutritional, medicinal and industrial value. Almond oil is used in confectionary and also for pharmaceutical and cosmetic preparation. Kernels after blanching, roasting, frying and salting are very delicious and in great demand. Green almond kernels are also consumed in the milky stage.

Village Madangunj is situated on the bank of the Hatania Duaniya, a branch of the Hoogly River in Namkhana. The cyclone Aila unleashed its fury on the people residing on the islands in the Sundarbans and changed their lives forever. The Sundarban is the world’s largest mangrove forest and home to the Royal Bengal Tiger. The cyclone also affected the fish resources and livelihood of the villagers. Efforts were made to provide alternative sources of livelihood to the poor people of these villages.

Challenges and opportunities

We conducted field surveys to understand the status of small indigenous fish after cyclone Aila in the Sunderban region, particularly in Namkhana block, which was badly affected by the cyclone. Hundreds of people under various age groups ranging from 27 to 65 years old and involved in various occupations were interviewed personally to know about the present status of small indigenous fish after Aila. It was reported by 60% of the respondents that there is a significant reduction in the availability of small indigenous fish (SIF). To rejuvenate their stocks, it was decided to develop a conservation site, as a common seed bank for SIF. The SIF are self-recruiting species and can be cultured in various cultural systems like ponds, canals, wetlands, cages, etc. They can tolerate the adverse water quality cond
