This complex system is fundamental for the existence, enabling to sense the world, process information, and respond to stimuli. Comprised of billions of specialized cells called neurons. The nervous system is responsible for various functions, from reflex actions to complex thought processes. The nervous system is a highly organized and complex network that serves as the primary means of communication within the body of all animals, including domesticated species. Understanding the anatomy and function of the nervous system is critical in veterinary medicine, as it governs essential processes such as locomotion, sensation, cognition, and homeostasis. Comprising the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS), the nervous system enables the coordination of reflexes and voluntary movements, facilitating interactions with the environment. Structural Organization: the CNS is composed of the brain and spinal cord, which are protected by the bony encasement of the skull and vertebral column, respectively. The brain varies significantly across species, reflecting adaptations to specific ecological niches and behaviors. For instance, the canine brain shows notable development in areas associated with olfaction, whereas the equine brain has adaptations for vision and balance, crucial for flight responses. The spinal cord serves as a conduit for neural signals between the brain and the peripheral nerves. It is organized segmentally, with spinal nerves emerging from specific regions. This segmentation corresponds to the vertebral column and is vital for diagnosing spinal cord injuries and diseases in animals. Each spinal nerve innervates specific muscle groups and areas of the skin, forming a somatic map essential for clinical examination and treatment. Neurons and Neuroglia: Neurons are the functional units of the nervous system, specialized for the transmission of electrochemical signals. In veterinary anatomy, it is essential to understand the structure of neurons, which includes the cell body, dendrites, and axon. Neurons can be classified into various types—sensory (afferent), motor (efferent), and interneurons—each playing distinct roles in reflex arcs and neural circuits. Neuroglia, or glial cells, provide support, nourishment, and protection for neurons. In veterinary practice, the role of glial cells in pathology is increasingly recognized, particularly in conditions such as neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration. Sampling of Milk for Analysis

A careful and accurate sampling is of utmost importance for the analysis of milk. It is a fundamental principle of sampling that the quantities withdrawn, must be proportional to the quantities contained in the respective containers and uniform throughout in its composition.Thorough mixing of milk must first be ensured either by stirring or by shaking gently. If milk from an individual animal is to be sampled, the sample should be taken from the middle of vessel containing the whole amount of milk. If the sample bottles have been standing for sometime, resulting in the separation of fat in the cream layer or lumps of fat appear, the bottles may be heated in a water bath upto 40°C to melt the fat before mixing. Milk should not be shaken very violently under any circumstance as it may result in an uneven distribution of fat.

Introduction

It was introduced from China into Japan in ancient times, where most of its improvement work has been done. The term “kaki” is Japanese. In the nineteen century, it was introduced from China to many other countries, namely in the USA, Brazil, Italy, New Zealand, Israel, Australia and South East Asia. Experiments at Central Soil Salinity Research Institute (CSSRI), Kamal, India showed that alkali soils are not always high in available P and rice and wheat significantly responded to addition of P (Pathak et al., 1975).

The availability of phosphorus in soil either native or added is limited by fixation and precipitation mechanisms. The organic acids released during decomposition of organic matter influences the soil pH, form stable complexes with cations responsible for P fixation and thus increases the availability (Tiwari et al., 1980).

The use of bulky organic manures (Maurya and Ghosh, 1972; Chaudhary et al., 1981) and green manures (Prabhakar et al., 1972; Sharma et al., 2000) has been found very beneficial for P management of saline and alkali soils as these improve the soil physical condition and the availability of soil phosphates.

It helps to maintain high fertility level and replenishment against losses, gaseous exchange, microbial activities, it helps to check soil erosion, suppress the weed population, economic utilization of interspace of main crops. Common soil management practices are cultivation, sod culture, mulching and rotation.

India throughout its long history has accumulated a prosperous practical acquaintance of the use of medicinal plants for the treatment of various diseases. Chemical studies on Indian medicinal plants make available a priceless material foundation for the discovery and development of new drugs of natural origin. Contrary to the synthetic drugs, antimicrobials of plant origin are not associated with many side effects and have an enormous therapeutic potential to cure many infectious diseases (Bibitha et al., 2002; Maghrani et al., 2005; Doughari, 2006). Extraction and characterization of several active compounds from these green factories have given birth to some high activity profile drugs (Mandel et al., 2007). Tomato is one of the most popular and widely grown nutritious vegetable in the world. Tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum Linnacus Karst.) belonging to the family Solanaceae is one of the most nutritious and remunerative vegetable crop. It is the world’s important vegetable next to potato. The crop is cultivated throughout the year. In Northern plains, the crop is cultivated during autumn, spring and summer. In South India, the crop is grown in June – July, October – November and January – February. The optimum season for seed production in southern India is October – December. Nursery raised in late October and transplanted in the first week of December will produce a good seed crop.

19.1. Plant Available Fraction of Nickel, Cadmium, Lead and Chromium

The DTPA method was originally developed to extract Mn, Cu, Fe and Zn from slightly acidic to alkaline soils (Lindsay and Norvell, 1978), but in some cases it can be used for other metals also such as Nickel (Ni), Cadmium (Cd), Lead (Pb) and Chromium (Cr). Among them Ni is considered as an essential micronutrient. The DTPA is used to extract soil metals by forming chelates with free metals in solution, which lowers their ionic activities so that additional quantities of metal are released from the soil until equilibrium is attained. Triehanolamine (TEA) is used to buffer the extracting solution at pH 7.3 in an attempt to optimize the extraction of various metals. Calcium chloride is included in the extracting solution to minimize dissolution of CaCO₃.

Arecanut (or betel palm) is chewed as narcotic either alone or more commonly along with betel leaf. Its nut has medicinal and pharmaceutical properties. About 1/10th of world population has a habit of betel chewing. Nut contains polyphenol (11-18 %) which includes flavonols like catechin, epicatechin, leucocyanidin, fat (9-15%), polysaccharides (17-25%), fibre and protein (6- 7.5%) and some minerals like calcium, phosphorous and iron.

As per the definition of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) study team; organic farming is a system which avoids or largely excludes the use of synthetic inputs namely fertilizers, pesticides, hormones, feed additives, etc. and to the maximum extent feasible rely upon crop rotations, crop residues, animal manures, off farm organic waste, mineral grade rock additives and biological system of nutrient mobilization and plant protection.
