Introduction

Packaging is a key element to quality branding for an organisation, ensuring that the product labels are securely attached to products. Adhesion bond strength of a film to a surface can be quantified in terms of peel strength, bonding strength, and shear strength. Many protective covers are used as required for various applications. In most of such applications plastics films are used as the first preference of the manufacturers. In applications like, protective LCD screens and other scratch-prone surfaces very low peel force films are used. The force required to remove the protective films or the label is very important for both the consumer and the manufacturer. For example, for protective film application, the film must be easy to remove, yet the bond must be strong enough to remain intact for product security. Whereas, in a typical adhesive application, like laminated cups, the bond between the surfaces should be strong enough to withstand various environmental impact.

Across India, various NGOs have developed and implemented innovative commercial farming-based livelihood models aimed at improving the economic status of rural communities. These models often focus on sustainable
agricultural practices, value addition, and market linkages. Here are a few noteworthy examples:
1. BAIF Development Research Foundation
• BAIF has implemented programs focused on dairy farming, agroforestry,  and watershed management. They provide training, resource support, and market access to farmers, optimizing their income through diversified
agricultural activities.
2. Pradan (Professional Assistance for Development Action):
• Pradan works primarily in tribal and backward regions, focusing on enhancing agricultural productivity and promoting non-farm livelihoods. They encourage the use of traditional knowledge, organic farming, and community-based seed banks, facilitating sustainable farming practices.
3. Sambhaavnaa Institute of Public Policy
• This organization focuses on promoting organic farming and the production of high-value crops. They empower local farmers by training them in organic agriculture techniques, enhancing market access for their produce, and developing cooperatives for collective bargaining.

On different occasions I have expressed my views on hunger and food security. Here are some of the views published earlier.

1. Food Security bill: Why it is an opportunity lost

Several years ago I and Dr M S Swaminathan were speaking at a conference on hunger at Rome. Also speaking at one of the sessions was the Brazilian Minister for Zero Hunger Programme, the dream programme of ex-President LuizInácio Lula da Silva. After he had listened to us, he sat down with us to know of how India was battling hunger, specially the way India was managing its food self-sufficiency and the massive food procurement programme.

Introduction

The past few years have been characterized by changes in every walk of life and libraries are no exceptions. Certainly there have been profound changes in the ways we approach and manage libraries and provide basic library services such as bibliographic control, document delivery, presentation, and physical facilities for reading.  The evolution of traditional interlibrary loan services into a full range of document delivery services, new avenues for document acquisions and delivery from traditional methods to “high tech” with the most efficient pathway defined by the user within desired cost and time parameters have set new standard for library resources and services management.

1. Introduction

Seaweeds are the extraordinary sustainable resources in the marine ecosystem which have been used as a source of food, feed and medicine. The number of natural products isolated from marine organisms increases rapidly, and now exceeds with hundreds of new compounds being discovered every year (Chapman and Chapman. 1980, Cheennubhotla et al., 1986; Chennubhotla et al., 1987; Faulkner, 2002; Proksch and Muller, 2006). Several products of algal origin such as alginate, carrragenean and agar as phycocolliods have been used for decades in medicine and pharmacy (Fitton, 2006). Seaweeds are considered as source of bioactive compounds and produce a great variety of secondary metabolites characterized by a broad spectrum of biological activities.  Seaweeds contain various inorganic and organic substances which can benefit human health (Kuda et al., 2002). The in vitro studies on green, brown and red algae confirmed the following potential activities viz., cytostatic, antiviral, antihelminthic, antifungal and antibacterial (Lindequist and Schweder, 2001; Newman et al., 2003; Dhargalkar and Neelam, 2005; Huang et al., 2005; Gonzalez del Val et al., 2001; Espeche et al., 1984).

Objective: To identify drought tolerant genotypes by PEG method in laboratory.

Background information:

Among different abiotic stresses, drought is considered to be most detrimental for agricultural production. A drought is a period of below-average precipitation in a given climatic region that results in prolonged shortages in water availability, whether atmospheric, surface water or ground water. A drought can last for several months or years. Drought has substantial impact on ecosystem and agricultural productivity.

Some plant species are better able to tolerate drought stress than others. Genetic variability for drought tolerance also exists within many plant species (Blum, et al. 1980). The efficient exploitation of that variability for crop improvement would be facilitated by a fast and accurate screening method for identifying drought tolerant genotypes (Clark and Mc Craig, 1982). Several methods utilizing seedlings to screen for drought tolerance have been developed using an osmoticum such as polyethylene glycol (PEG) (Singh, et al. 1984). The other synonyms of PEG are Poly ethylene oxide (PEO) and Poly oxyethylene (POE); these other chemicals depend on the molecular weight. Chemical structure of PEG may be written as H”(O”CH₂”CH₂)_n”OH (Kahovec, et al. 2002). PEG is used in certain abiotic stress experiments to produce high degree of osmotic pressure, normally in the order of 'tens of atmosphere' PEG produces osmotic pressure due to its flexible nature and water soluble polymer. PEG also makes certain specific interactions with bio-molecules. Due to above properties PEG is used as a specific chemical to produce osmotic pressure in several biochemical and bio-membrane related experiments. For some genotypes, the seedling response apparently is a good indicator of the plant's reaction to drought stress later in its life cycle. However, early screening of seed plants via seedlings tests must still be considered as a method for identifying genotypes that will tolerate drought stress in the vegetative stage (Andersen, et al. 1987).

Chilli or Pepper (Capsicum Sps.) originated in South America and spread into the New World tropics before subsequent introduction to Asia and Africa. Chillies are now widely grown throughout the tropics, sub-tropics and warmer temperature region of the world. The genus Capsicum is a member of the family Solanaceae.

Where Y is the average yield of a crop in a sequence over a period of years “n” and S is the standard deviation of yield over a period of years, Y max is the maximum yield of a crop in a certain year.

Example 1. Six crop sequences were evaluated in simple randomized block design replicated four times at Durgapura. The sequences tried are pearl millet-wheat, cluster bean-wheat, pearl milletmustard, cluster beanbarley, cowpea-mustard and pearl millet-Chickpea under irrigated conditions.

Theory

The bucket elevator’s capacity mainly depends on bucket size, conveying speed, bucket design and spacing, the way of loading and unloading, the bucket and the characteristic of bulk material.

Bucket elevators with a belt carrier can be used at fairly speeds of 2.5 to 4 m/s. The speed of the belt depends on the head pulley.

If the belt speed is too low, the discharge of the grains become more difficult, with too high speed the buckets are not fed well.

23.1 Introduction

Coffee is the second important popular beverage for its aroma and mild stimulant action. Its dried beans are roasted, ground and brewed to make a stimulating and refreshing beverage. Use of coffee has evolved from original chewing of leaves and beans of the plant to relieve pain, hunger and fatigue to the present more sophisticated uses, like espresso and decaffeinated coffees. Its use was first discovered in Arabia around mid-15th century.

The term digital is derived from the word digit or digitus, a Latin word for finger, as fingers are often used for discrete counting. A variable is discrete when it is countable in a finite time and its instantaneous value at any timing/ instant belongs to a set of finite values.

All the above ground parts of the plant are affected. There is development of round and elongated spots surrounded by brownish red margin on the leafl ets. At later stage spots coalesce and entire leaf turns brown. On green pods, the lesions are usually circular with dark margin and pin head like dark dots representing the pycnidia in concentric circles.

Introduction

The wild seedling of walnut has been found growing in west regions right from the Carpathian Mountains in Eastern Europe across Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Southern USSR and Afghanistan to the North-Western Himalayas. It is believed to have originated in Iran and the areas surrounding it. The Returning army of Alexander brought it to Europe from Iran. Almost all parts of the walnut tree are utilized. The fruit has excellent flavour and is mainly consumed as a dried fruit, eaten for table purposes. The kernels contain about 60–75% fat and oil, 16% carbohydrate, and 15% protein. Jammu and Kashmir is the largest walnut producing state in India and the USA is a leading producer of walnuts.

11.1 Introduction

The crossopterygians, primitive, lobe-finned, bony fishes, represent a very interesting group of fish showing many features of amphibians and other tetrapods. They possess paired fins with a large median lobe, fins covered by scales, a cosmine layer, swim bladder as lungs, nostrils that open into the mouth cavity and autostylic jaw suspension.

Livelihood enterprises associated with farming encompass a diverse range of activities that support agricultural income, enhance food security, and provide sustainable livelihoods for farming communities. Below are several case studies from different regions and types of farming-related enterprises:
1. Organic Vegetable Farming in India
• Location: Karnataka, India
• Enterprise Type: Organic farming
• Synopsis: A group of farmers transitioned from conventional agriculture to organic farming, focusing on high-value crops like tomatoes, bell peppers, and leafy greens. They formed a cooperative to share resources,
equipment, and knowledge.
• Impact: By adopting organic practices, farmers increased their income by 30-50% due to higher market prices for organic vegetables. The cooperative also created a direct supply chain to urban markets, reducing dependence on middlemen.
2. Beekeeping as a Supplementary Enterprise in East Africa

The major source of water supply on the earth is precipitation. The water received at the earth’s surface from the atmosphere either in solid or liquid form is called precipitation. The water received in solid form may be snow or hail. The precipitation is seasonal in character in many parts of the world. The precipitation may occur due to –
• Conventional physical process
• Orographic effect and
• Convergence of air masses
3.1. Conventional Physical Process
It occurs when the air on the surface of the earth and few metres above the surface of the earth is heated by absorbing long wave radiation emitted by the earth’s surface. As the air is heated, it becomes lighter. The water vapour formed due to evaporation from the soil surface or water bodies will mix with the air and the air will be moist. When the moist air gets heated it becomes lighter and rises vertically upwards. After reaching certain height, the air gets cooled enough to get saturated with water vapour. The moisture in the saturated air will condense on small solid particles to form tiny drops. These solid particles may be dust or smoke or solid particles suspended in the atmosphere and are called aerosols.

Introduction
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) represents one of the most significant public health challenges of modern times. The discovery of antibiotics in the early 20th century revolutionized medicine, transforming once-fatal infections into manageable conditions and enabling life-saving procedures such as organ transplantation, chemotherapy, and joint replacement surgery. However, the overuse and misuse of antibiotics in human medicine, veterinary practice, and agriculture have accelerated the development of resistant microorganisms. Today, infections caused by resistant pathogens claim millions of lives worldwide each year, with the World Health Organization warning of a postantibiotic era in which minor injuries or routine surgeries could again become life-threatening. Although AMR is often framed within the context of hospital-acquired infections and clinical treatment failure, its implications extend much further. In particular, AMR has significant consequences for physical and health fitness. For athletes, soldiers, patients in rehabilitation, and physically active individuals, resistant infections can disrupt performance, delay recovery, and compromise long-term health. The increasing prevalence of resistant organisms in community environments—including gyms, swimming pools, and sports facilities—further raises concern. This chapter situates AMR at the intersection of clinical medicine, sports science, and community health. It explores how resistant pathogens affect physically active populations, complicate rehabilitation processes, and influence outcomes in both competitive and recreational Fitnes. It also highlights the global and national responses to AMR, preventive strategies relevant to Fitnes and rehabilitation, and the role of healthcare professionals

Sheep and goat rearing in India continues to be traditional even today. This sector is primarily in the hands of poor, landless or small and marginal farmers who raise their animals on natural vegetation, stubbles and supplement tree lopping. The productivity of sheep in India is relatively low with an average body weight gain of 20 to 50 g/day. The major causes for the low productivity are inadequate grazing resources, tropical heat and disease incidences and a lack of awareness about improved management practices.

Small volume cultures are useful for experiments such as studying cell morphology, titration of viruses, plaque assay, pock assay, SNT and to compare the effect of agents on growth and metabolism. However, there are other application where there is a need of large number of cells such as extraction of DNA/RNA from cells, production of viruses for vaccine production and a number of products namely interferons, interleukins, hormones, enzymes, antibodies, glycoproteins etc. The large quantity of cells can be obtained by using a large number of flasks/bottles but it is tedius, labour intensive, expensive and there is a risk of contiamination. Although the unit processes are more cost effective and efficient, it needs some modification to overcome limiting factors such as oxygen depletion, shear damage and metabolic toxicity. There are a number of aberrations available to scale up cell culture described below.

Objective: To identify salt tolerant genotypes by Glycine Betaine (GB) method in laboratory.

Background information:

Salt or salinity is a biggest danger that causes reduction in crop productivity worldwide. Salinity reduces the germination percentage, plant vigour and ultimately loss in final crop yield. There are different physiological parameters that are affected by high level of salinity viz., oxidative stress, physical alteration of bio-membrane, nutritional imbalance, loss of cell division & cell expansion, water stress, genotoxicity and ion toxicity. Together, these effects reduce plant growth, development and survival. During the onset and development of salt stress within a plant, all the major processes such as photosynthesis, protein synthesis and energy and lipid metabolism are affected. During initial exposure to salinity, plants experience water stress, which in turn reduces leaf expansion (Petronia, et al. 2011).

The water-soluble compounds which, are low in molecular weight, accumulate at certain concentration known as “compatible solutes” or “osmolytes” is the common strategy adopted by many organisms to combat the abiotic stresses. Some common compatible solutes are betaines, sugars (mannitol, sorbitol and trehalose), polyols, polyamines and amino acid (proline). Their accumulation is favored under water-deficit or salt stress as they provide stress tolerance to cell without interfering cellular machinery. The tolerant or sensitive species show difference in the stress tolerance level based on levels of accumulation of these compounds during abiotic stress condition. Accumulation of osmolytes like glycinebetaine (GB) in cells is known to protect organisms against abiotic stresses via osmoregulation or osmoprotection. Other roles of GB like cellular macromolecule protection and ROS detoxification have been suggested as mechanisms responsible for abiotic stress tolerance. In addition, GB also influences expression of several endogenous genes in plants.
