Introduction

Bacteria are very minute and colourless in their natural environment and are difficult to be seen under compound microscope. To view their exact morphology, various kinds of stains are used. Stains are of three main types.

Acidic stains: These are those stains in which charge on dye ion is negative. e.g. India Ink, Eosin etc.

Basic stains: These are those stains in which charge on dye ion is positive. e.g. Methylene blue, Crystal violet etc,

Neutral stains: These are the salts of dye acid in dye base. e.g. Eosinate of Methylene blue.

The toaster is a kind of equipment used to toast bread in order to make it crisp. It has two slots which can hold two or four slices of bread. The electrical element produces the heat needed to make the bread hot and crisp. The toaster is a little apparatus intended to toast numerous sorts of bread items. The term soil organic matter (SOM) includes any material that is produced originally by soil organisms (plant or animal) that is returned to the soil and undergoes decomposition process. Most soil organic matter originates from plant tissues. Plant residues contain 60 - 90 per cent of moisture and the remaining dry matter consists mostly of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, with smaller amounts of sulphur, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium. Though present in small amounts, these nutrients are of great significance from the standpoint of soil fertility.

The management of diseases and pests is a major challenge. Monoculture, excess use of fertilisers, high- yielding varieties, climate change etc have not only intensified plant diseases, but also given rise to new diseases or intensified those diseases which were earlier considered of minor importance. Although decades of research have given rise to certain promising organic and biological alternatives to chemical disease management, due to the lack of proper attention of researchers worldwide, the organic and biological disease management technologies are still not very popular.

There are numerous private organizations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) around the world that are dedicated to promoting farming-based livelihood opportunities. These organizations often implement a variety of schemes and programs aimed at improving agricultural productivity, enhancing income, and providing support to farmers. Here are some common types of schemes and programs that such NGOs might engage in:
1. Training and Capacity Building
• Workshops and Training Programs: NGOs often organize training sessions for farmers on modern agricultural practices, sustainable farming techniques, pest management, organic farming, and efficient
water management.
• Farmer Field Schools: Practical learning environments where farmers can learn through hands-on experience and observation.
2. Access to Credit and Financial Services
• Microfinance and Cooperative Societies: NGOs may provide microloans or form cooperatives to give farmers access to credit and financial services without exorbitant interest rates.
• Savings Groups: Encouraging farmers to form savings groups to manage their finances better and prepare for lean seasons.

Remote sensing involves measurement of the physical properties of a body without actual contact with it. It is based on the reflectance when the electromagnetic radiation is incident upon a body or surface. The spectral characteristics of the reflected radiation vary depending upon the nature and condition of the surface. In case of vegetation, it absorbs light and can reflect light in the visible range. The leaf pigments dominate the reflectance properties (Fig.9.1). The radiation bands within which the reflectance of electromagnetic radiation takes place are classified as follows-

The vegetation index is a mathematical expression that uses spectral imaging data to characterize the health and growth of the vegetation indices are calculated using data collected by remote sensors like Satellites. The vegetation indices have wide range of applications in agriculture and hydrology including

1. Introduction

Mounting pressure of teeming population and shrinking land resources have necessitated the production of increasingly more food per unit area. Insect pests, diseases and weeds are important biotic constraints inflicting 20-25% loss in agriculture production. Synthetic pesticides have of course, played a very significant role in restricting many pest problems. However, their indiscriminate has been its toll by creating several problems like pesticide resistance in insects, contamination of food with toxic residues, resurgence of pests and deleterious effects on non target organisms. The number of effective pesticides available is dwindling day by day further having less choice among which to choose. These ill effects have arised interest in alternate methods of plant protection.

The extent to which various plant species are utilized for pest control depends, not only on their effectiveness against target pests, but also on socio-economic, environmental and policy considerations. Keep these in mind the present study on the efficacy of botanicals against Spodoptera litura was carried out.

Importance of Backyard Poultry Farming in India

Commercial chicken production in India has undergone a remarkable change in the last three decades. While India is among the top five chicken producing and top seven duck producing countries in the world, the gap between the demand and production is still alarming. Average per capita availability of eggs in big cities is 170 while it stands at 9 eggs per annum in the rural areas. Though the commercial poultry sector has made a stupendous progress over the years, the conventional free and backyard poultry farming remain neglected. Backyard poultry farming contributes around 11% to the national production while in certain states like U.P. around 60% of the poultry population is indigenous fowls reared under backyard system. The backyard sector contributed to 23 per cent of the total egg production in 2005-06.

Commercial chicken production is capital intensive and is generally concentrated in and around urban areas. There is a wide disparity in consumption of the poultry products between urban and rural population. Around 75% of country’s population living in the rural areas has limited access to the protein rich poultry products. Protein deficiency is quite common in the diets of rural people. Adoption of rural poultry farming may ameliorate the high incidence of protein hunger in growing children and pregnant women.

It has been seen that the commercial birds have poor immunity against common poultry diseases. As production is inversely proportional to the viability traits, the nutrients absorbed are mostly diverted for growth in commercial chicken. On the other hand, indigenous birds reared in rural areas are resistant to many diseases and pests. Unlike the local breeds maintained in villages, the commercial breeds require high level of input pertaining to feed and health care to maintain production and check mortality.

A nimal disease monitoring describes the ongoing efforts directed at assessing the health and disease status of a given population. The disease can be a specific infectious disease/diseases or health in general, whereas the monitoring activities are the routine recording, analyses and distribution of information related to the disease (or health). The term disease surveillance is used to describe a more active system and implies that some form of directed action will be taken if the data indicates a disease level above a certain threshold.

In today’s click-and-access kind of world, Information Technology is finding applications in every field and animal disease monitoring & surveillance is no exception. The various technologies which are applied are Geographic Information Systems, Global Positioning System, database management, computer aided design (CAD), computer network technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), expert systems etc.

i. SHIELD OR ‘T BUDDING

Procedure

Operations on the stock- Select healthy, uniform stock plants of about a lead pencil thickeness and about one to one and half years of age. Remove the thorns (if any) and side branches up to a height of 20 to 25 cm from the soil surface. Select a spot at height of about 15 to 20 cm from the soil surface in between two internodes, which is smooth, other than the southern aspect. With the help of a sharp knife make a horizontal cut of about 1.25 to 1.80 cm in length, deep enough to cut bark only. Starting from the centre of the horizontal cut make a vertical cut, deep enough to cut the bark only of about 2.5 to 3.5 cm long making the shape of english letter ’T’. Open the flaps with the help of knife blade or the back of the budding knife.

Vacuum cleaners, which are used in homes as well as in industry, exist in a variety of sizes and models—small battery-powered hand-held devices, wheeled canister models for home use, domestic central vacuum cleaners, huge stationary industrial appliances that can handle several hundred litres of dust before being emptied, and self-propelled vacuum trucks for recovery of large spills or removal of contaminated soil.

Happiness is the barest minimum to any person for survival and moving with a humble vision and mission either. Unfortunately, our farmers are denied to a glow of happiness, and mantled with clouds of agony, depression and confusuion. They are supposed to ensure food security to all, but themselves have to deal with extreme food insecurity, market uncertainty, undulating income, erosion of natural resources and stereotypes of farming occupation. That is how there has been a sharp rise in the migration from farm to off farm occupation.

This is the need of the hour to estimate their happiness. Agriculture is India’s backbone, employing half the country’s population. However, it has been confronting with several issues, including unfair and non-remunerative market prices, an unstructured supply chain, disaster driven crop failure, and so on. However, an alarming trend in our country shows that farmers are desiring to quit agriculture by large number, 45-60 per cent, and are committing suicides; this is a threat to our long-term a gri-development. Do they cultivate because they desire to, or because they have got no other choices either?

Soil organic matter makes up only a few per cent of most soils, but it has a great deal of influence on soil properties and on agricultural productivity.

2.1. Quantity of Organic Matter

Based on the content of organic matter, soils are identified as mineral or organic. Mineral soils dominate most of the world’s cultivated land and may contain anything from a trace to 30 per cent of organic matter. Organic soils are naturally rich in organic matter, chiefly due to climatic reasons. Although they contain more than 30 per cent organic matter, it is precisely for this reason that they are not vital cropping soils.

Crops that are not part of the customary diet of the local population and grown primarily for their high cash values and export potential are categorized as non- traditional. Non-traditional crops are usually cultivated on low acreage, crops such as ethnic fruits and vegetables, culinary and medicinal herbs, plants for industrial uses etc. are usually considered as non-traditional fruit crops. A non traditional crop may be new to a region or simply new to the grower. Many times non-traditional crops are cultivated to adapt to changing trends in agriculture and demographics.

For growing non-traditional crop proper planning is required to build a comprehensive business case. Realistic assessment of the potential risks and gains is necessary before actual implementation. All aspects of non-traditional crop production, including the agronomics of growing the crop, potential food safety and regulatory issues and marketing needs to be reviewed. Experience of producing conventional crops may not necessarily be directly applicable in producing non-traditional crops.

Farming-based livelihood enterprises play a crucial role in promoting sustainable development, especially in the context of the circular economy and green economy. Both these economic models emphasize sustainability, resource efficiency, and environmental responsibility. Here’s how farmingbased livelihood enterprises contribute to these concepts:
1. Resource Efficiency
• Waste Minimization: Farming enterprises often utilize organic waste, such as crop residues and livestock manure, in composting or biogas production, converting waste into valuable resources and reducing
landfill use.
• Water Management: Practices like rainwater harvesting and drip irrigation optimize water use, contributing to a more efficient agricultural model that aligns with circular economy principles.
2. Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services
• Agroecology: By promoting biodiversity through polyculture and intercropping, farming enterprises enhance ecosystem resilience, improve soil health, and provide habitats for various species, supporting
both local ecosystems and the green economy.
• Sustainable Practices: Organic farming and regenerative agriculture increase carbon sequestration in soils, thereby contributing to climate mitigation efforts.

The purpose of irrigation scheduling is to decide upon the amount of water to be applied for irrigation and timing of irrigation in order to avoid wastage of precious water. The irrigation scheduling is also used to determine the number of irrigations required for a crop during its growth cycle and judicious use of water depending upon the weather forecasts issued from time to time. The irrigation scheduling has to be planned for either full irrigation or supplementary irrigation depending upon the availability of water resources and the season during which crops are grown. Crops grown during the dry season requires full irrigation and crops grown during the rainy season require supplementary irrigation. The third category of irrigation is protective irrigation which is practiced in dryland areas. The protective irrigation is given when the crops are experiencing severe moisture stress due to prolonged dry spells wherever the farmers has access to small ponds and tanks developed within his own field as water harvesting structures.
10.1. Full Irrigation
Under full irrigation, the crops are provided with irrigation right from land preparation till the crop is getting ready for harvest maturity. The full irrigation will be usually planned for maximum yields of the crop (Fig.10.1).

Introduction
Assisted reproductive technology (ART) refers to treatments and procedures in the field of reproductive biology that are utilised to achieve pregnancy by artificial or partially artificial means.
Artificial insemination
Artificial insemination (AI) is the earliest form of assisted reproductive technology. The technology has been of immense relevance in enhancing production and health features through the appropriate use of better male animals, as well as in eliminating certain venereal illnesses.
• Semen collection: The man is typically allowed to mount a phantom during the process. In cattle, an artificial vagina is used)
• Semen evaluation: Evaluating semen is crucial before processing. The most basic semen evaluation involves examining the concentration, progressive motility, and morphological normality of the spermatozoa)
• Semen dilution, packaging and freezing: Following examination, the semen is ready for dilution and packaging. Spermatozoa require storage mediums that are particular to each species. After packaging, the semen dosages must be properly maintained until insemination. Cryopreservation is typically used for cattle.
• Insemination: Insemination should occur during the female’s oestrus, when she is receptive to copulation.
Multiple Ovulation and Embryo Transfer (MOET)
The main processes are to stimulate a donor female to create suitable embryos, then remove the embryos from her and transfer them to unmated recipient females at equivalent post-ovulatory reproductive phases, ensuring that the donor’s embryos are carried to term in the recipients’ uteri. Multiple ovulations are caused by superovulation or superstimulation, a procedure that increases the number of ovulations in a donor beyond what is normal for a given species. Embryos are recovered 6-8 days following the start of oestrus. Most embryos are transferred during the late morula or blastocyst stage.

The tentative diagnosis of viral diseases of livestock can be made by clinical symptoms alone. The clinical diagnosis is substantiated by the laboratory to obtain a precise, correct and prompt diagnosis. The success however depends on the collection of suitable materials in proper transport medium at a particular stage of disease condition and its dispatch to the laboratory in a manner that little or no alterations occurs in the specimen. This would facilitate the isolation and identification of the causative viral agents easily.
