Guar [Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taub.], internationally known as guar, is extremely drought hardy, deep rooted, summer annual legume of great economic and adaptive significance. Virtues of guar effectively match with low and erratic rainfall pattern and high ambient temperature habitats of arid regions. The crop may thrive very well in rainfall range of 250-450 mm with 3-4 spells, temperature range of 25-40°C, RH values of 50-65%, longer days with 8-9 hr sunshine, particularly at maturity. Guar is ideally suited to light to medium textured soils, with no water logging conditions. The crop tolerates less inputs and restricted after care, matching with the arid farmers’ livelihood conditions. It is grown for grain, vegetable, fodder, cattle feed and green manure purposes, mainly in rainfed habitats of Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat and to some extent in Punjab and Madhya Pradesh. This crop has recently been introduced in non-traditional regions of Annantpur, Kadappa and Chittoor dry region of Andhra Pradesh. Only duringcurrent summer season of 2012, guar has been successfully cultivated with 4-5 irrigations in parts of Chattirgarh and Vidarbha and in non traditional summer seasons of Rajasthan. The cultivation in non-traditional regions and seasons have increased possibility of two crops in rainy and summer seasons. Even though, guar is cultivated on marginal lands, with marginal inputs in these regions, yet it has occupied the status of international, export oriented cash crop. The same has been due to presence of natural polysaccharide galactomannan gum content in seed endosperm. The gum content has wide industrial uses. Almost 80-85% guar gum produced in India is exported and rest is used for inland commercial demands. Of late, increasing demands of guar gum for USA alone to the tune of 5.0 lakh tonnes annually has led to sky rocketing prices resulting in economic benefit of Rs. 1.0 lakh to 1.5 lakh/ha in 90-100 days only. Hence, guar is rated as a source for providing livelihood security to arid farmers in practical reference. Relevant information on guar have been provided in this chapter.

Allele-Specific PCR

This diagnostic or cloning technique is used to identify or utilize single- nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (single base differences in DNA). It requires prior knowledge of a DNA sequence, including differences between alleles, and uses primers whose 3' ends encompass the SNP. PCR amplification under stringent conditions is much less efficient in the presence of a mismatch between template and primer, so successful amplification with an SNP-specific primer signals presence of the specific SNP in a sequence.

Amplification Refractive Mutation System (ARMS) - PCR

In ARMS, the primer pair is designed so that one of the 3' ends coincides with a variant nucleotide in the target sequence. When the primer mismatches the template the frequency of extension is very low and consequently the effective number of sequence copies available for amplification is greatly reduced. ARMS PCR exploits a thermostable polymerase that lacks 3' exonuclease activity (usually Taq polymerase). Such enzymes extend primers bound to their target sequences very inefficiently when the 3' base is mismatched. Because the 3' exonuclease activity required for mismatch repair is not present, the extension of such primers in PCR is a rare event and amplification is retarded. However, once mismatch extension has occurred amplification proceeds normally from the newly synthesised target strand. Thus an important principle of ARMS is that non-matching (i.e. non-matching at only the 3' end of one primer) template may be amplified. The factors that contribute to this apparent ‘failure’ of ARMS are that when very high numbers of template molecules are added to the reaction, amplification is likely to proceed because the small proportion of mismatched primer extensions reach the sensitivity threshold of the reaction. Second, certain mismatches are extended more efficiently than others so that proportion extended in each PCR cycle varies.

Meteorology is a branch of physical sciences, which studies the physical properties of earth's atmosphere, and it is a combination of physical and geographical sciences. It is an applied science using the principles of physics to understand the physical state and behaviour of atmosphere.

In meteorology, weather describes the physical state of atmosphere of a particular place in a given point of time, usually for a shorter duration. On the other hand, climate describes the state and dynamics of the same set of weather variables of a particular place for a longer period.

India is known as the land of spices, while Kerala is often referred to as the spice bowl of the country. Out of the 109 spices acknowledged by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), India cultivates around 63 spices. The Spices Board of India actively encourages the cultivation and trade of 52 spices. This remarkable diversity in spice cultivation is made possible by India’s varied geographical conditions, encompassing all 15 agroclimatic zones, ranging from tropical and subtropical to temperate regions. These diverse conditions enable the cultivation of almost all kinds of spices.
Definition
Spices are defined as “spices are those plants, the plant products of which are made use as food adjuncts to add aroma and flavour”. Spices are also defined as per the Internal Organization for Standardization (ISO) as “Spices are Vegetable products, or mixtures thereof, free from extraneous matter, used for flavouring, seasoning and imparting aroma to foods”.
Condiments are defined as “condiments are also spices, products of which are used as food adjuncts to add taste only.” Mainly used for seasoning purpose. Herbs are defined as “dried leaves of aromatic plants used for flavouring food”. Both spices and condiments consist of essential oils which enhance the flavour and taste.

Coconut is a traditional plantation crop of India and assumes the status of a high value commercial crop. In India, most of the acreage under coconut palm (90%) lies in the four southern states i.e., Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Kerala ranks first in area (53.76%) and production (45%) followed by Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Coconut is mostly a crop of small farmers in India, the average size of a holding being 0.22 ha. More than 90% of the five million coconut holdings in the country are less than one ha in size. The income derived from such small holdings is not sufficient to sustain even the small families.

Abstract

Extensive occurrence of alkaline soils has been reported from the Indo-Gangetic plains of Northern India, which is commonly known as ‘usar’ or ‘reh’. High alkalinity and high exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP) of such soil render it inhospitable for normal crop production. Research efforts over the past few decades have resulted in evolving a number of practices for the reclamation and management of such soils. However, application of biological inputs in combination with some moderately salt tolerant plant species seems to be a better option. AM fungi is well known to enhance the ability of plants to cope with environmental stresses generally prevalent in the degraded ecosystems and stress conditions by providing a number of nutritional and non-nutritional benefits. Since isolates of AM fungi differ in their tolerance to adverse physical and chemical conditions in soil and are better adapted to their native stressed microhabitat, selection of appropriate native AMF isolate is necessary for any large scale reclamation program. Taxonomic diversity of AM fungi in the alkaline soils of Upper Gangetic plains of district Allahabad and adjoining areas has been investigated and it was found that such soils have a detrimental effect on the AM spore population, distribution and diversity. Maximum spore population occurred in winter and minimum in summer. Glomus followed by Acaulospora was the most dominant genus. Acaulospora scrobiculata and Glomus fasciculatum were the most frequent species followed by Glomus mosseae and Glomus aggregatum. Glomus fasciculatum was the most abundant species followed by Glomus mosseae and Acaulospora longula.

The newly developed smart energy management systems improve energy production, distribution, and consumption by utilizing cutting-edge technology like artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Smart energy management is a notion that limelight on lifting the reliability and efficiency of energy systems. With the usage of current technologies, smart energy systems can audit real-time energy use, and energy demands and manipulate the power distribution accordingly. This required to improvising the potential of renewable energy (Hossain et al., 2024). Energy recovery is defined as the reusing of energy, that has the possibility to get waste in the following forms, heat, waste materials, gas and so on. In the bioenergy industry organic waste is converted into a suitable form of energy, which gives hybrid benefits like waste reduction and energy generation. Furthermore, a highly resilient and efficient energy system that meets sustainable development goals can be created by combining these recovery systems with intelligent energy management tools (Mariana et al., 2021). The investigation of how energy recovery technologies and intelligent energy management can improve the efficiency and sustainability of bioenergy systems is covered in this chapter. The potential of smart energy solutions to meet the increasing need for sustainable and renewable energy sources will be highlighted in this research through a thorough analysis of case studies, emerging trends, and existing technologies. A roadmap for the future of bioenergy will be provided, together with an identification of the main obstacles and possibilities that players in this quickly changing industry must contend with (Naeem, et al., 2024).

Abstract

Microorganisms that harbour in the root region are the most befitting candidates for use as biocontrol agents. The rhizosphere provides the frontline defense for root against attack by pathogens. Pathogens face a complicated phenomena of antagonism from roots. They also compete with each other for site of colonization on the root surface and plant nutrients. The ideal biocontrol agent introduces and /or promotes the antagonists only, whenever required and are most effective in minimizing the wasteful application of inoculum to non-targets. Many genera belonging to bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes and viruses are used as biocontrol agents to combat several important plant diseases. The present review focuses on the use of bacterial antagonists ,particularly rhizobacteria, as biocontrol agents of fungal diseases of plants , their mechanism of action, molecular and genetic basis of antagonistic property and possible genetic manipulations to bring about desirable changes. 

12.1. Introduction

Drying refers to the method of removal of moisture content from the food to a level at which the activities of food spoilage and food poisoning micro-organism are inhibited. Drying under open sun is probably the oldest method of food preservation used for agricultural crops including food grains, oilseeds as well as fruits and vegetables. Most of the fruits and vegetables contain enough moisture to permit the activity of enzymes and micro-organisms for spoilage and drying is necessary to reduce the water activity. Therefore, reduction in water activity of the food is the main principle of preservation by drying. Two commonly used terms for dried foods are low moisture foods and intermediate moisture foods (IMF). During drying, a single layer of fruit and vegetables, either whole or sliced after primary pretreatments is spread on trays which are placed inside the dehydrator or in the open sun for drying. In mechanical dehydrator, the initial temperature is generally kept at 43oC which is then gradually increased to 60-66oC for vegetables and 66-71oC for fruits.

Abstract

The traditional forage production systems and grazing lands are under extreme pressure due to the population growth of both human and livestock, decreasing area and inputs. In the central India, especially the Bundelkhand region, the soil is highly weathered, degraded and have low inherent nutrient, which was further worsened due to use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, for enhancing crop production to meet the escalating demand of the population.

Introduction 
Natural product scaffolds and heterocyclic ring-based organic compounds are crucial for developing bioactive substances and therapeutic drugs, serving as essential structural units for bioactive molecules and pharmacophores. Numerous experts have worked hard to design and develop organic synthesis, which could make it easier to obtain these crucial organic chemicals. Due to the multistep reactions involving several hazardous chemicals, conventional organic synthesis is neither commercially feasible nor environmentally benign. To overcome these issues, improvisation or developing a new synthetic approach with a superior atom and step economic procedure is always desirable. The biggest challenge in organic synthesis is functionalizing a carbon-hydrogen (C-H) bond in a molecule. This is generally achieved through radical intermediates and catalysis by enzymes or transition metals. The transition metal-catalyzed process is the most popular due to its high chemoselectivity, site-selectivity, and efficiency (Yamaguchi et al., 2012). Inert C-H bonds can be directly functionalized, offering appealing synthetic strategies that enhance both atom and step economy and provide an overall efficiency of multistep synthetic sequences, leading to a sustainable and greener approach. These optimizations provide atom and step-economical methods for synthesizing structurally complicated organic molecules with broad substrate scope and good to exceptional product yields (Ackermann, 2011; Gensch et al., 2016). Direct conversion from the substrate to the desired organic compound without pre-functionalization is attractive and cost-effective. However, it can be quite challenging to selectively functionalize particular C-H bonds due to the inertness of those C-H bonds having similar electronic and bonding properties and the ubiquity of C-H bonds in organic molecules (Sambiagio et al., 2018). Two main techniques have been explored to obtain selectivity in C-H bond functionalization (Brückl et al., 2012). The first is based only on the natural reactivity pattern of an organic molecule. This strategy is highly successful for some heterocycles with at least one specific reactive site due to the presence of heteroatoms. However, it produces inadequate selectivity for most aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. The latter is to direct further functionalization at a particular site using directing groups already present in the molecule (Kuhl et al., 2012). The development of directing groups that effectively control the regioselectivity of C-H functionalization has lately transformed this field, enabling the incorporation of desired groups in unfunctionalized sites (Docherty et al., 2023; Labinger & Bercaw, 2002). Employing directing groups, various functional groups are added to a molecule using this method. Directing groups are crucial for breaking a C-H bond in a transition metal catalysis reaction, where the metal center in the active catalyst complex is usually coordinated with the substrate through a weak interaction with the nearby C-H bond. This interaction is typically not selective; thus, the metal centre may activate numerous C-H bonds on the substrate. However, when a directing group is incorporated into a substrate, the metal center can interact more strongly and regioselectively with a specific region on the substrate as directed by the directing group. Dietary phytochemicals and herbal medicines are under intensive investigation for their potential as chemopreventive agents against various diseases due to the wide variety of microbial and plant functionally relevant secondary metabolites. The chemical diversity of phytochemicals, as well as phytochemicals and complex metabolic interactions between the biological systems may exceed the capacity of the platforms of traditional analysis, and therefore pose major challenges in the study of chemopreventive phytochemical compounds.

Introduction

Zymomonas mobilis, a gram negative, anaerobic, micro aerotolerant, ethanologenic bacterium metabolizes glucose, fructose, and sucrose. One of the major factor that limits the usage of Z. mobilis is the narrow substrate range. Moreover, there are no obvious genes reported for using lactose, maltose or cellobiose. Our preliminary sequence analysis of the Zymomonas mobilis ZM4 genome indicated the presence of a putative beta-galactosidase (bga) gene. However, the mechanism of beta-galactosidase (Bga) function is still unknown. Hence, Bioinformatics analysis was made to predict the physicochemical, biochemical and biophysical properties, domains, secondary and tertiary structures of the putative beta-galactosidase. These studies suggested that the putative beta-galactosidase gene was poorly expressed from its native promoter in Z. mobilis. The absence of beta-galactoside transacetylase and permease genes in Z. mobilis led to its inability to metabolize lactose. Hence, function predictions of Bga are performed because of the fact that it has a homologous partner.

Indian canes probably originated in the moist parts of North Eastern India from some plants closely related to Saccharum spontaneum (Barber, 1931). Brandes (1956) concluded that tropical cane might have originated in some of the larger islands of Oceania countries most probably in New Guinea, where various forms of thick, tall tropical canes have been grown from ancient times. Parthasarathy (1946) believed that India is the original home of Saccharum officinarum.

Abstract

Wild plants of medicinal value are the embodiment of knowledge perception gift from our ancestors and these plays a significant role in curing various human health disorders. This gifted knowledge of economic plants used by the local people usually has long narrations for use in their daily activities. Considering the value of indigenous knowledge associated with plants, a study was undertaken on herbaceous communities in Atraulia area (Burhanpur tehsil), district Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh. During the investigation, a total of 71 informants (22 females and 49 males) were interviewed and data regarding ethnobotanical information on wild plant species were documented and analysed. The results indicated a total of 169 species belonging to 41 families used in indigenous herbal preparation as medicine from Atraulia area by local tribal people. The dominant growth forms were the annual herbs represented by 91 species, followed by 46 species of perennial nature and 32 species of biennial growth. Therefore, we can conclude that this region is rich in herbaceous plants and plant used as medicine is wide spread in the study area. This communication deals with demography of the informants, botanical name of herbaceous plants, family, part used, disease cure, use report, frequency of use and recommendation for conservation of unique valueable resources.

The significance of Plant Genetic Resources (PGR’s) is on top of agenda of all those who are concerned with food, nutritional and environmental security by using the Earth’s plant - biodiversity judiciously in a vital form. Agro-biodiversity is the backbone of a nation’s food security and the basis of economic development as a whole. The top-down system of agricultural research, where farmers are seen merely as recipients of research rather than as participants in it, has contributed to an increased dependence on a relatively few plant varieties. Global cooperation from farmers to agricultural scientist is critical for maintaining the balance across the agricultural landscape. Over the years this diversity in India is under pressure due to the massive commercialization of agriculture leading to the almost extinction of traditional farming systems and plant- biodiversity is under immediate threat. Behind this commercialization there lies the interest of the breeders for obtaining intellectual property rights. Around 1.6 billion people depend on farm-saved seed, yet up to 75 per cent of varieties of some key crops have already been lost this century. The rate of loss may well increase as global trade rules, intellectual property rights regimes, the concentration of agricultural research and development on inappropriate technological‘solutions’, and now the introduction and promotion of genetically engineered products, all combine to erode local resources from the fields of smallholder farmers. At the moment, it should call for a balancing on research into modern biotechnology, in favour of a redirection of research and development resources into sustainable, environmentally-friendly technologies that, sustain poor people’s livelihoods, agricultural biodiversity and agro-ecosystem functions. In this context, the importance of farmer-derived Agricultural Biodiversity that includes the variety and variability of plants and micro-organisms which are necessary to maintain the structure, processes and key functions of the agricultural ecosystem for, and in support of, food production and food security.

INTRODUCTION

The interactions of plant communities – natural or man-made, with their pests are invariably complex, and the complexity further increases with the diversity of the system. When a farmer adopts agroforestry instead of monocultures, the opportunities of relatively easy monitoring of the pest and their frequent disturbance through crop rotation, tillage and burning are traded against a greater stability of the system with an increased potential for self-regulation, which is however complex and more difficult to control. For this trade to be successful in reducing pest risks, agroforesters should not merely rely on increased diversity, but should attempt to integrate into their decisions the full range of traditional and scientific knowledge on the interactions between plant species, planting designs and management practices on one hand, and pests and their natural enemies on the other hand. This obviously requires collecting knowledge and organizing in more systematic way than up to now.

Knowledge of the avian respiratory system is essential for developing a health monitoring plan for a poultry flock, recognizing problems that may occur, and taking action to correct them.
