5.1. INTRODUCTION

The word ‘probability’ means “reasonable likelihood of happening of an event”. In biology it is difficult to predict an outcome with absolute certainty. Probability helps us to estimate the occurrence of relative frequency of any (biological) event and is an accepted measure of uncertainty.

Mathematically, the probability ‘P’ that an event ‘E’ will occur, is expressed as:

Fungi, nematodes, bacteria, and viruses are probably the first things that come to mind when thinking of plant pathogens. These organisms certainly do cause damage to plants of economic importance, but it may surprise you to know that parasitic flowering plants are also important pathogens.There are few seed plants, which are parasitic on living plants and are called parasitic higher plants or Phanerogamic parasites. These parasitic higher plants attack some valuable crops and trees causing considerable losses. They produce flowers and seeds and belongs to several widely separated botanical families they differ to each other on their dependency on host plants. These parasites have haustoria as absorbing organ, which sent deep into the vascular bundle of the host to draw water and nutrients. More than 2500 species of higher plants are known to live parasitically on other plants.

17.1 Introduction

Bioenergy is an array of energy produced by biomass (organic matter) including liquid, solid, and gaseous fuels, electricity, heat, steam, biochemicals and materials. Biofuel is any plant derived organic matter available on a renewable basis, including dedicated energy crops and trees, agricultural food and feed crops, agricultural crop wastes and residues, wood wastes and residues, aquatic plants, animal wastes, municipal wastes, and other waste materials. An organic matter such as wood, plants, residues from agriculture or forestry, and the organic component of municipal and industrial wastes that can now be used as an energy source. Today, many bioenergy resources are replenished through the cultivation of energy crops, such as fast-growing trees and grasses, called bioenergy feedstocks.

Bacteria are by far the common type of soil microorganisms, possibly because they can grow rapidly and have the ability to utilize a wide range of substances as either carbon or nitrogen sources. The bacteria that provide some benefit to plants are found near, on (or) even within the roots of plants (Kloepper et al., 1980) to protect the plants from pathogen attack called as antagonistic organism. Among the many potential bacterial antagonists associated with the plant roots the fluorescent pseudomonads have received prominent attention due to their abundance in plant rhizosphere and their ability to colonize roots of a wide range of crop plants. Pseudomonas fluorescens is a Gram negative, non spore forming, rod shaped bacteria producing pigments which are greenish, fluorescent and water soluble. It is found to be effective against the following fungal pathogens viz., Rhizoctonia solani, Macrophomina phaseolina, Fusarium udum, Pyricularia grisea, Fusarium oxysporum fsp. cubense. It is capable of surviving in the spermosphere, rhizosphere and phyllosphere of plants. The mechanisms of biological action exhibited inovles antibiosis, competition, lysis and induced resistance. Pseudomonas have an exceptional capacity to produce a wide variety of metabolites, including antibiotics, that are toxic to plant pathogens.

Fruit and nut crops have adapted to a wide range of soil, climate and moisture conditions irrespective of their place of origin. The limits of the distribution of these crops across the globe are largely governed by climatic factors such as temperature, wind direction, solar luminance level, length of day (latitude) and atmospheric water vapour content besides other factors. These climatic factors are considered critical in governing the distribution of plant species because not only they limit the growth and development of plant species but also determine the consistency of annual cropping and the quality output. 

• Semen cryopreservation – It is the process of preserving the semen in a suitable medium at an ultra-low temperature which reduces spermatozoa metabolism with the least production of metabolic waste products of sperm cells to prolong their life span. • Every fall of 100 C temperature decreases the metabolic rate of spermatozoa to half. Protection from cold shock and cryoinjury • When sperm cells are subjected to a reduction in temperature during the freezing process, there are: • Sperm membrane damages and lead to leakage of intracellular components like enzymes, ATP, K+ , cholesterol, lipoproteins etc. • Irreversible abnormality in motility pattern (bending of sperm tail)

Introduction The idea of LiFE was introduced by the Prime Minister during the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow from 31st October to 13 November 2022. The LiFE movement, additionally, also seeks to leverage the strength of social networks to influence social norms surrounding climate. The Mission plans to create and nurture a global network of individuals, namely ‘Pro-Planet People’ (P3), who will have a shared commitment to adopt and promote environmentally friendly lifestyles. Through the P3 community, the Mission seeks to create an ecosystem that will reinforce and enable environmentally friendly behaviours to be self-sustainable.

Milk impaction in neonatal calves is a condition characterized by the improper digestion or accumulation of milk in the abomasum, leading to digestive disturbances, discomfort, and potential health complications for the calf. This condition is most commonly seen in newborn or very young calves; typically within the first few days to weeks of life, as their digestive systems are still developing and may be more susceptible to dysfunctions. Causes of milk impaction
Several factors can contribute to milk impaction in neonatal calves. Understanding these causes is essential for prevention and treatment. The primary causes are:
1. Overfeeding or undigested milk: One of the most common causes of milk impaction is overfeeding, where the calf is fed more milk than it can digest properly. Overfeeding can overwhelm the capacity of the
abomasum, leading to a backup of undigested milk. Undigested milk in the stomach can ferment, creating an acidic environment that may disrupt normal digestion and lead to impaction.
2. Inappropriate milk temperature: Milk fed to calves should be at the proper temperature, usually between 38-39°C (100-102°F). Milk that is too cold can cause a delay in the digestive process and lead to impaction, as it may not be digested as quickly as milk at the ideal temperature. Similarly, milk that is too hot can cause digestive stress or irritation.

Fish seed grading and quality assessment are crucial steps in ensuring successful fish rearing in aquaculture. Grading helps separate fish based on size and other characteristics, while quality assessment evaluates the overall health and suitability of the seed for stocking. This process improves the efficiency of rearing and the survival rate of the fish.

In aquaculture, the early stages of fish development—larvae, fry, and fingerlings—require careful handling and management to ensure maximum survival and healthy growth. Among the most critical practices in nursery and hatchery phases are size grading, survival rate monitoring, and deformity checks. These practices ensure that only high-quality, vigorous fish seed is reared or sold for grow-out operations.

Abstract

The data on production performance of Banni buffaloes during the 2008-09 and 2009-10 were collected from the animals selected under project “In-Situ Conservation of Banni buffalo”. The data on 208 animals were analyzed and overall means ± SE for total lactation milk yield, lactation length, peak yield, days to attain peak yield, milk yield per day of lactation length, service period and calving interval were observed as: 2917.76 ±  54.77 lit., 292.19 ± 2.88 days, 14.86 ± 0.18 lit., 47.50 ± 2.92 days, 9.99 ± 0.14 lit., 87.13 ± 4.39 days and 380.87 ± 2.36 days, respectively. Present findings on production performance indicate Banni buffalo an valuable germplasm maintained under extensive production system and arid climatic conditions of Kachchh and holds the promise of raising milk production of non-descript and low producing buffaloes through up-grading and crossbreeding. Therefore, Banni buffalo can be use as improver breed for genetic improvement of non-descript buffalo population in semi-arid and arid regions of the state / country.

The general circulation of the atmosphere explains the formation of pressure belts and wind systems in the earth’s atmosphere. It is known that the earth receives more solar radiation near the equator and gets heated more. Consequently, the air gets heated more and rises vertically upwards. As there is more convection of the air near the equator, the atmospheric pressure will be less. The warm air which moves upwards up to a height about 14 km near the equator gets cooled and move towards the poles.

The upper air gets gradually cooled when it reaches a latitude of 30°N in the northern hemisphere and 30°S in the southern hemisphere. At about 30°latitude the cold air descends to the earth’s surface. Some of the cold air after descending to earth’s surface moves towards the equator. The circulation of air between the equator and 30°N or 30°S latitudes is called Hadley cells (Fig. 8.1).

The winds blowing from 30° latitude towards the equator at surface level are called trade winds. These trade winds which move towards the equator in both northern hemisphere and southern hemisphere converge near the equator and the zone of the convergence of these winds is called Inter Tropical Zone of Convergence. As the convergence of air takes place, due to convection of heat as a result of high temperatures leads to vertical lifting of moist air. Therefore, the Equatorial regions receive more rainfall and there are tropical forests in this region.

Introduction

Milk, which is recognized for its significant nutritional and immunological value to humans as well as animals, is the primary source of vital nutrients and bioactive components that contribute to the newborn’s growth and development. In addition, it includes extracellular vesicles (EVs). EVs are membrane-bound vesicles that are discharged by cells into biofluids like milk. EVs play an important function in intercellular communication and have demonstrated potential in therapeutic applications. This is extremely important since EVs are abundant in milk and carry a wide range of cargo, including proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids, that supports to their classification as bioactive components of milk Milk-derived exosomes have intriguing properties as nanocarriers for theranostic care.

O horizon: A soil layer dominated by organic materials occurring at the surface of the soil. 

Oblique Aerial Photographs: An oblique photographis one which has been taken with the optical axis of the camera intentionally tilted from perpendicular position obliquely. The degree of tiltfrom the perpendicular further classifies oblique photographs into high oblique photograph and low oblique photograph. A high oblique photograph is one which is taken with the optical axis of the camera making an angle >30^° with the vertical axis and which shows the apparent horizon on the photograph.

When we are having two or more than two feed ingredients and by using them we have to prepare a mixture of desired nutrient composition then we will require to use Pearson’s square method. Use of pearson’s square is a simple procedure that allows us to mix two feed stuffs with different nutrients concentrations and come up with a mixture of the desired total concentration. For the pearson’s square to work, the desired diet’ nutrient concentration must be between the nutrient concentrations of the two feed stuffs. Suppose we have a protein source such as ground nut cake (GNC) with 40.9% crude protein (CP) and maize with 8.8% CP, and we need a mixture of the two that will have 18% CP. AS shown in the illustration, we compare the CP percentage of each feed on the left with the desired percentage in the middle of the square. The lesser value is subtracted from the greater value and the answer, in parts of a mixture rather then in percentage, is recorded diagonally, but read horizontally.

Lawn

Lawn is a natural green carpet, and it is important feature of a landscape and a garden without a lawn is not considered complete. Lawn is an area of land closed mowed grasses it is primarily developed for aesthetic and recreational purpose. A lawn is an integral part of a garden and landscape besides aesthetic and recreational purpose and several other purposes. Lawn provides a place for taking rest after tiring of the day, holding parties, social functions, passive and active recreation. Distinguishing characteristic of turf grasses is the ability to with stand close mowing and still providing a functional dense healthy ground cover. Lawn is also called as heart of garden. J.B. Olcoth designed first experiment in lawn grass at Monchester in USA in the 19th century. Festuca and Agrostis species were used to make turf (Lawn) during 1880 in U.K. In the early 19th century lawn become wild spread out side of parks golf course. Now a day in many metro cities of India lawn has become a cultural of the passion of many homes.

Climbers can be used to break the bareness of long walls, soften posts, frame doors and windows and beautify window boxes. With a fence or trellis, they can be used for screens, making a background for flower garden or quickly turning an ordinary porch or patio into a private, shady living centre. Some slower growing climbers are useful as container plants for patios. On the down side, most vine species have the potential to become invasive, spreading to areas where they may not be desirable or becoming too large for the intended area.

Types

Climbers are characterized as three types based on how they cling to a support. The kind of support needed depends on whether the Climbers cling by twining stems, orby specialized structures such as tendrils, adhesive disks and aerial roots. Climbers with twining stems wind around a support as they grow (Fig. 5.2). Examples of plant with twining stem sinclude bitter sweet, wisteria and trumpet creeper.Tendrils resemble thread like stems that wrap around any structure they contact (Fig. 5.1). Examples of plants with tendrils include grape, pea, and cucumbers. Some Climbers have specialized structures for clinging to a support with a disk-like suction cup (Fig. 5.3). Examples include Boston ivy and Virginia creeper. Other Climbers cling by means of small, aerial roots that attach to rough surfaces such as mortar, wood, and tree trunks (Fig. 5.4). Examples include English ivy, trumpet creeper and winter creeper euonymus.
