National journals play a crucial role in the dissemination of regionally relevant research, particularly in specialized fields such as agricultural sciences. These journals act as accessible platforms for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to share findings, innovations, and solutions tailored to local contexts. Strengthening national journals is essential for fostering knowledge exchange, promoting inclusivity in scientific communication, and addressing the unique challenges faced by different regions (Fig. 12.1).
This chapter explores strategies for improving the quality, visibility, and credibility of national journals, with examples from countries across the globe, including those outside North America and Europe. Case studies of successful initiatives are included to illustrate best practices for empowering local publishing platforms, with a particular focus on non-English publications.
12.1. The Importance of National Journals in Agricultural Sciences
Agricultural sciences are inherently context-dependent. Local factors such as climate, soil type, cropping systems, and socioeconomic conditions influence the challenges faced by farmers and the solutions that are most effective. National journals provide a vital medium for addressing these region-specific issues, enabling researchers to publish studies that may not align with the broader focus of international journals. Furthermore, these journals often cater to the immediate needs of local policymakers, extension workers, and educators, ensuring that research findings are translated into actionable outcomes.

26.1 Introduction
Developed nations’ packaging sector has achieved great advancement. The advent of innovative marketing strategies such hyper markets and selfservice outlets has pushed the packaging technologies in these nations to unprecedented heights. The evolution of appliances and packaging tools as well as the introduction of fresh and better packaging materials has happened holistically. In nations like India still in development, packaging is still in its infancy. Packaging any product is the arrangement of the most appropriate containers and components to safeguard, move, label, and identify any good.
26.2 Packaging
Packaging is putting an item into a protective wrapping or container for use or storage. The package serves three purposes: it stores, shields, and merchandising tool. For the safe delivery of the product through the several phases of manufacturing, storage, transportation, distribution, and marketing, it is a necessary link between the manufacturer and ultimate customer. Fresh, sound and easy form of milk delivery depends on protective packaging to minimise losses and withstand the challenges of climate change, transit, handling etc.
1. To contain the product: The package should be big enough and built with suitable elements to stop spoiling and leaks. It should be sturdy enough to withstand handling, shipping, and storage difficulties as well as closely matched with the product.
2. To protect the product: Packaging seeks to protect the product from microbiological activity, heat, light, moisture, oxygen, evaporation, etc., therefore preventing contamination, loss, damage, or degradation.
3. To help in selling the product: Easy dispensing, reclosure, disposal, and possible reuse should be made possible by the packaging form, therefore helping the marketability of the product.

Introduction

Forests face many hazards but most common is forest fire. They pose threat to not only forest wealth but also to entire region of fauna and flora seriously disturbing the bio-diversity, ecology and environment of a region. During summer, forests are littered with dry senescent leaves and twigs which could burst into flames ignited by the slightest spark. Forest cover in India is 675,538 km and constitute 20-25% of geographical area.

• Symptom appears in the form of tumor-like swellings of leaf veins, leaf stalks, peduncles, stems as well as fruits.

The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a very powerful new method used for in vitro to amplify a deoxynibonuclic specific region that lies between two regions of known DNA sequence single molecule to million folds in short time. This is achieved by an enzyme taq. DNA polymerase which is thermostable using this enzyme can synthesize microgram quantities of DNA of specified length and sequence from pictogram quantities of complex template in a few hours time.

The complete system of veins of a wing is termed venation or neuration. Generally in all the insects, there is some similarity in wing venation and therefore, it is presumed that all types of wing venation have developed from the common base or the same ancestor. Using an extensive study of wing venation in different groups of insects, Comstock and Needham constructed a hypothetical type of wing venation from which all other types have presumably been derived. According to them the primitive wing venation has developed from two tracheae which are situated on the anterior and the posterior basal margins of wings and their branches are spread all over the wing.

Bronsted and Lowry defined acids as substances which are able to donate protons, and bases as substances which accept protons.

In the above example, BH is an acid because it donates proton and B– is an anion liberated by the deprotonation of the acid. B– behaves like a base, so it is called conjugate base.

Acids can be classified into strong acids and weak acids.

1. Strong acids get dissociated almost completely, e.g., hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid. This is because the conjugate bases of these acids are very weak (have less affinity for the proton).

2. Weak acids get dissociated partially, e.g., acetic acid, carbonic acid. This happens because the conjugate bases of these acids are strong (have greater affinity for proton). Since the dissociation of the weak acids is partial, the equilibrium constant for the dissociation reaction of the weak acid (BH) can be written as follows:

I am happy to note that the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, a premier national institute for agricultural research is celebrating the 100th year of its establishment. It is indeed quite fitting that JARI has chosen to celebrate this occasion by organizing a seminar on current scenario in temperate horticulture in Himachal Pradesh which is the second highest producer of temperate fruits in the country, I, therefore consider myself to be privileged to be a key speaker, and express my appreciation and gratitude to the organizers for giving me this honour and opportunity in this very important event.
 
The varied climatic and soil conditions in India provide enormous scope for cultivation of wide range of tropical, sub-tropical and temperate horticultural crops, The production of tropical and sub-tropical horticultural crops is confined to the plains, coastal and root hills of Indian mountain~ whereas, the temperate horticulture is monopoly of the hilly regions of the country. The production of temperate fruits in the country is spread over some fifteen states and union territories situated in the following regions.

All atoms can absorb light at certain discrete wavelengths corresponding to the energy requirement of the particular atom. When at ground state the atom absorbs light it is transformed into the excited state. It is the same atom containing more energy. This energy is measured in relation to the ground state and a particular excited state say for example in case of Na may be 2.2 eV (electron volts) above the ground state.

Each transition between different electronic energy states is characterized by a different energy and by a different wavelength. These wavelengths are sharply defined and when a range of wavelengths is surveyed, each wavelength shows as a sharp energy maximum (a spectronic line). These characteristic lines distinguish atomic spectra. The lines, which originate in the ground state of atom, are most often of interest in atomic absorption spectroscopy. These are called the resonance lines. The atomic spectrum, characteristic of each element, then comprises a number of discrete lines, some of which are resonance lines. Most of the other lines arise from excited states rather than the ground state. The lines of excited states are not useful generally in atomic absorption analysis as most of the atoms in a practical atomizer are found in the ground state.

Over the last decade, area under horticultural crops grew by 2.60% per annum and production 4.8% per annum. During 2017-18 total 311.71 million tonnes horticultural crops were harvested from 25.43 million hectare area. India is 2nd largest producer of fruits in the world after China, with average productivity at 14.97 t/ha. Fruits alone were cultivated almost in 6.5 million hectare area and production of 97.38 million metric tons, (Anonymous, 2018).

Probiotics and prebiotics are widely used in animal nutrition to promote gut health, enhance immune function, and improve production performance. Probiotics are live microorganisms (e.g., Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Bacillus, and Saccharomyces) that confer health benefits when administered in adequate amounts. Prebiotics, such as fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and mannanoligosaccharides (MOS), are non-digestible compounds that stimulate the growth of beneficial gut microbes. The optimal supplementation levels vary among speciesbased on their physiology, diet, and production goals.
Cattle
Probiotics
Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Enterococcus faecium,and Saccharomyces cerevisiae are commonly used.
Dose
Lactobacillus spp.: 1 × 109– 1 × 1010 CFU/head/day.
Saccharomyces cerevisiae: 5–10 g/head/day or 108– 109 CFU/g feed.
Prebiotics
MOS and FOS are used to improve gut integrity and nutrient absorption.

THRESHING EQUIPMENT
A thresher is a machine designed to separate grains from harvested crops while minimizing loss and damage. During threshing, various types of grain loss may occur, such as broken, un-threshed, blown, or spilled grains. “Threshing” refers to the process of separating grains from plants. This operation can take place in the field or on the threshing floor, using hand labor, animals, or machines. Regardless of the method used, it’s crucial that threshing is done carefully to avoid grain or husk breakage, which can lower the quality of the product and increase losses from insects or mold. Extra care should be taken when transporting harvested crops to the threshing area to prevent any loss.
Threshing or Shelling Operations
Threshing or shelling operations occur after harvesting and any pre-drying processes. These tasks can be performed either in the field or at the farm, using hand labor, animals, or machines.
The method of threshing or shelling is influenced by various agronomic, economic, and social factors. It can be done in several ways:
• By hand, using simple tools.
• With the help of animals or vehicles.
• Using manually operated mechanical machines.
• Using motorized equipment for mechanical threshing or shelling.
As noted earlier, harvesting and threshing or shelling can often be done together using combine-harvesters or picker-shellers. Regardless of the system used, it’s essential to handle threshing or shelling with care. Improper methods can cause grain or husk breakage, reducing product quality and leading to higher losses from insects and mold. Additionally,

After the Second World War, the 1940’s and 1950’s was the wide spread establishment of artificial insemination and the introduction of frozen semen in cattle breeding.  In the late 1960s came revolution in measurement of hormones in the body fluid with the introduction of sensitive radio-immuno-assay (RIA) techniques, which provided a new approach to early pregnancy diagnosis, emerging around the same time were early forms of the ultrasonic which could also employed in the detection of pregnancy. The 1970’s were to see embryo transfer and freezing of embryos in cattle becoming commercial realities and their incorporation into increasingly effective breeding improvement programme with the availability of prostaglandins (PGs) and Gonadotrophin releasing hormones (GnRH) that decade also witnessed new possibilities for estrum control in cattle and horses.  Few years later came the ability to produce the cattle embryos in the laboratories in large numbers and at low cost.

Object: Growth analysis: Calculation of growth parameters. 

Material required: Primary data collected from individual plants or derived from whole canopies. 

Theory: The growth analysis study provides information on the growth of plants or of a plant community in a precise way with the available’ raw data. The study also provides precise information on the nature of plant and environment interaction in a particular habitat.

Bacterial species vary greatly in the ability of their cultures to remain alive after the completion of growth. Some species such as Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Streptobacillus are poorly viable and their cultures usually die out within a few day, whether kept at 37°C at room temperature or at 4-5°C; thus, they must be sub cultivated every 2-4 days for maintenance in the laboratory. Other species are much hardier,. especially sporing species which may remain viable for many years. There are also many non - sporing species (enterobacteriaceae) whose cultures, under suitable conditions, commonly remain viable for many months and often for as much as 10-20 years.

The concentration of a true solution refers to the amount of solute present in a given quantity of solvent or solution. It is an important property because it determines the solution’s behavior in chemical reactions, its physical proper ties (such as boiling and freezing points), and its utility in various applications. Concentration can be expressed in several ways, depending on the context and the precision required.

Methods to Express Concentration of a True Solution

1. Molarity (M)

• Definition: Molarity is the number of moles of solute dissolved in one liter (1,000 mL) of solution.

Introduction
Vetiver/Khas is a fibrous, perennial and aromatic root crop spread over Indian subcontinent. The genus Vetiveria is derived from its Tamil name ‘Vettiver’. It occurred largely in wet and damp environments over marshy lands in south-east Rajasthan and Haryana. Also found in river banks of western, central and northern U.P. up-to 1200 m elevation in the Himalayan foothills, T.N., Karnataka, Kerala and some parts of central India. Besides India, it is also widely grown in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Haiti, Vietnam and Brazil for its fragrant volatile oil (Guenther, 1972). This species along with its unique xerophytic characteristics of tolerating prolonged drought, also survives under long seasonal flooding; extreme temperature and sustainability over a wide range of soil salinity and alkalinity. The South Indian types are rich in oil percent, but content more of hydrocarbons and less oxygenated constituents, thus inferior to North Indian types having higher percentage of oxygenated compound and very high quality odour value. It belongs to family Graminae or Poaceae.
Uses
• Spongy and fibrous roots are commonly used for making cooler pads, floor mats, door screens emitting sweet fragrance with cooling effect in hot summer season when sprinkled with water as roots retain its delightful odour for a long period.

Aquaria, commonly known as fish tanks, are mainly categorized by the type of water they use—freshwater, brackish, or marine—and the kind of habitat they aim to recreate. They may also be classified by size, function, or the species they are intended for. Generally, aquaria fall into categories based on water composition, user intent, and maintenance complexity.
Freshwater aquaria are the most widely kept due to their simplicity and suitability for beginners. These tanks typically house species like guppies, mollies, and goldfish. Brackish water aquaria contain water with intermediate salinity, ideal for species such as archerfish and scats, requiring specific care conditions. Marine aquaria, designed for saltwater organisms like clownfish and coral, demand precise salinity levels and advanced filtration systems, making them more challenging to maintain.
By purpose, aquaria include community tanks, which accommodate multiple compatible species, and species-specific tanks, dedicated to observing the behavior and breeding patterns of a single species. Breeding tanks are specialized setups designed for reproduction and fry care, ensuring optimal water quality and feeding conditions. Planted aquaria focus on cultivating live aquatic plants alongside fish, combining aesthetic appeal with ecological stability.
Additionally, commercial aquaria are typically large-scale setups used in public displays, pet trade, or scientific studies. In contrast, domestic aquaria are maintained at home for personal recreation or hobbyist-level breeding activities.
