The geologists of the Indian subcontinent have all along been of the opinion, that, the southern part of the Indian Peninsula is a stable shield area. But, the recently acquired IRS-1A image of June, 1988 vividly displays spectacular geomorphic anomalies suggesting that this part of the Indian subcontinent is prone to earth movements. In order to unearth more evidences on such earth movements / neotectonism in Tamil Nadu, the IRS-1A image of Coromandel coast of Tamil Nadu was analysed ( Fig. 1).

OBSERVATIONS

• The IRS-1A image conspicuously displays three contrasting morphotectonic domains in the study area marked by the western undissected Tertiary upland (Vallam upland), central highly dissected Tertiary upland (Pattukottai -Mannargudi upland) and the eastern Cauvery delta (Fig 1 and 2). These three domains are separated by two conspicuous N-S trending lineaments (E and F, Fig.1 and 2) namely the Tanjavur - Avadaiyarkovil lineament in the west and Kumbakonam -Muttupet lineament in the east.
• In addition, two more E-W trending lineaments (G and H, Fig.1 and 2) are also observed trifurcating the undissected Vallam upland into three blocks.
• Along these lineaments, especially the Tanjavur -Avadaiyarkovil and Kumbakonam -Muttupet lineaments, the rivers show conspicuous drainage anomalies in the form of drainage deflection, drainage compression etc., wherever they transect the lineaments.

A survey of farming systems and agricultural-based livelihood enterprises is a research method used to gather information about the different ways farmers organize their agricultural activities and how these activities contribute to their livelihoods. It aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the diverse farming practices, resource management strategies, and income-generating activities within a specific region or community.
Objectives
Identify and classify farming systems: This involves understanding the different types of farming practices prevalent in the area, such as crop-livestock systems, mixed farming, specialized cropping, agroforestry, etc. Classification may be based on factors like scale, technology used, crops grown, livestock raised, and integration with other enterprises. Assess resource use and management: This includes examining how farmers utilize natural resources like land, water, soil, and biodiversity. It also covers xmanagement practices like irrigation, fertilization, pest control, and soil conservation.
Analyze livelihood strategies: The survey investigates how agriculture contributes to the overall livelihoods of farming households. This includes income from crop and livestock production, as well as off-farm income sources. Evaluate the economic viability of agricultural enterprises: This involves assessing the profitability and sustainability of different farming activities. It may include analyzing production costs, market access, and value addition opportunities.

Food is a major determinant of health, nutritional status and productivity of the population. It is, therefore, essential that the food we consume is wholesome and safe. Unsafe food can lead to a large number of food-borne diseases. It is necessary that the food available is safe, hygienic, wholesome and its quality must be assured. Quality of foods can be defined as the ‘composite’ of those ‘characteristics’ that differentiate individuals units of a product and have significance in determining the degree of acceptability of that unit by the buyer. In general, the quality control is the maintenance of quality at levels and tolerance acceptable to the buyer, minimizing the cost for the vender. But, from the scientific angle the overall quality refer to technical, physical, chemical, microbiological, nutritional and sensory parameters to achieve the wholesome food. These quality factors depend on the specific attributes such as sensory properties, based on flavour, colour, aroma, taste, texture, quantitative properties viz. percentage of sugar, protein, fibre etc and hidden attributes like peroxide, free fatty acids, enzymes etc. Though quality attributes are many, not all need to be considered for a particular product. It is imported to determine how far relatively the factor is in relation to the total quality of the product.

Hence, the quality attributes of a particular is based on the composition of the product, expected deteriorate reaction, packaging used, shelf required and the type of the consumer i.e., deployed in terrain conditions or in peaceful situation. With the ultimate goal of protecting the consumer, quality standardization systems have come into force for regulating the gamut of operations in food manufacture. In a broader sense, food laws and Regulation cover the related acts affecting the marketing, production, labeling, food additives used, dietary supplements, enforcement of General Manufacturing Practice (GMP), Hazard analysis and critical Control Point (HACCP), federal laws and regulations, factory inspections and important-export inspections.

The food is considered as one of the essential for the maintenance of life. Manufacturing of the food product is not enough form the food industry. It is necessary that the food available is safe, hygienic; wholesomeness and its quality must be assured. The food industry is an important segment of industries in India and has its own peculiarities unlike other industries. Food processing industry has been recognized by government as a major sector of growth. It must be free from harmful additives, microbes and remain so for a period, it is intended to be consumed. Therefore, the methods employed in quality and food safety assurance programme within the food industry will vary considerably in accuracy and sophistication according to the type of process and size and nature of resources available. Since the international market has become demanding in terms of quality, safety and delivery, installation of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) in food industry would provide a competitive edge to food supplies in the international market. Food control refers to all activities carried out to ensure the quality, safety and honest presentation of the food at all stages from primary production through processing and storage, to marketing and consumption. The term has been used to describe a total national effort involving an integrated approach between government and all segment and sectors of the food industry. Food control is linked to improvement in the health of the population, potential of a country’s economic development and reduction of spoilage and food losses.

A wide variety of quality determinants is employed, including size, colour, maturity and extent of blemishes. Quality is a measure of the degree of excellence or degree of acceptability by the consumer. The marketing of fresh fruit and vegetables is aimed eventually ay appealing to the consumer for whom tradition plays a major role in determining the acceptability of a food item. The eating habits of people are conservative. The increase of direct market from producer to supermarket chains is leading to the imposition of standards to predetermined specification by the supermarkets. Important factors in quality for the consumers are: appearance, including size, colour, shape, condition and absence of defects, texture, flavour and nutritional value. Quality is the ultimate criterion of the desirability of any food product to the consumer. The overall quality of food depends on the nutritional and other hidden attributes. 33.1 Introduction

World fisheries face the threats of overfishing and climate change that have resulted in the extinction of genetically unique stocks and loss of genetic diversity. Genomics has brought new tools that can help address fundamental questions in fisheries management such as stock identification, population structure, and adaptive response to environmental change (Bernatchez et al, 2017).

The weight of living plant material contained above and below a unit of ground surface area at a given point of time, is known as plant “Biomass”. Biomass is of utter importance because it provides energy source (Roberts et al. 1987).

Biomass, which has dimensions of mass per unit, is expressed as g m^-2, kg ha^-1 or t ha^-1.

Measurement of Biomass

The area (in the crop field) under study is divided into a number of equal squares or rectangular plots measuring 1.0 m² or 0.5 m². Each square is designated with a particular number. Sample can be harvested from a small area or quadrate at the centre of each square; the remaining peripheral area serving as buffer zone (Wiegert, 1962).

Depending upon the growth pattern of plant species two different designs have been adopted for the sampling:

All due precautions have to be exercised in handling pesticides because many of these leave toxic residues on treated food materials and plants which accumulate in higher concentrations in animals which consume these.

General Precautions

Read the precautions given by the manufacturer of the pesticides carefully. Store the pesticides under lock and key; prevent access of children to these; empty containers must be disposed off safely.

Blood and skin contaminations must be avoided.

The godown for fumigation must be made airtight by closing the doors, windows, ventilators, crevices etc.

In case of fumigation, the operator must use a suitable gas mask. It is a face-piece connected to a canister containing an absorbent material for the vapours of the fumigants by means of a flexible non-kinking breathing tube and provided with valves so that all air inhaled by the user passes through the canister and the exhausted air passes directly to the outside atmosphere through a non-return valve. The absorbent canister carries instructions indicating the number of hours for which it is effective in an atmosphere charged with the fumigant.

After the required exposure period, aerate the godown thoroughly. First open the entrance door, keep it open for 6-7 hours, then only enter and open other doors or windows.

3.1 Introduction

India, when gained independence in 1947, was predominantly an agrarian economy, with a stagnant national income. The country inherited a weak industrial base, restricted to only a few industries. Agricultural growth was virtually negligible, the country had a stagnant cropped area where by only a very small proportion of agricultural land was irrigated. On the eve of the country’s independence, on 15^th August 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s Prime Minister, reminded the country that the task ahead included ending poverty, ignorance, and disease and inequality of opportunity. India began the process of planning with the launching of the 1^st five-year plan in April 1951. The central purpose of planning was to ‘initiate a process of development which would raise living standards and open out to the people new opportunities for a richer and more varied life’. Afterwards, the five-year plans were formulated seeking development in a sustainable manner.

The country, over the past has travelled a long way indeed in its drive towards economic growth, modernization of the economy, feudal economy at the time of independence has been transformed into one based on a fairly developed and diversified industrial structure and a sound agricultural base with a large potential for further industrialization and development. The income and consumption levels of people, on an average, have increased and the consumption basket has diversified. A noteworthy achievement indeed has been the elimination of famines with which the country continued to be afflicted right until independence. That achievement is far from negligible since many other countries in Asia and Africa are yet to free themselves of this malady. There is also other achievement, varying from the successful functioning of a democratic system to the emergence of a strong and large scientific community (Dreze Sen, 1995). The figure 3.1 shows the per capita income during 1997-1998. It shows that the maximum income from Northern India compared to Southern India. However, having adapted the pattern of economic development that brought prosperity to the Western, India has also seen widespread environmental damage and degradation in the pursuit of economic growth. The concern for preserving the environment against the onslaught of industrial expansion, intensification of agricultural, and adoption of a resource-intensive lifestyle has not been given the attention it deserved, and the costs of environmental degradation have not been internalized in the development process. While the Indian economy study made by two World Bank staffers shows that the country is paying an enormous price for this onward march, which has brought in its wake ecological devastation and numerous health problems.

Insecticide resistance to both fumigants and contact insecticides is an increasing problem in controlling stored grain and grain product insects throughout the world (Table 14.1). Hence, persons engaged in food commodity storage and preservation world over are concerned about the resistance of stored product insects to contact insecticides and fumigants. It is, therefore, necessary to work out strategies to delay or minimize the probability of resistance evolution. Resistance to pesticides is the ability of a strain of insects to tolerate doses of toxicants which would prove lethal to a normal population of insects of the same species. Resistance results when occasional resistant individuals arise in a population and survive the pesticidal treatment. These survivors then reproduce and confer the resistance to their offspring in succeeding generations. Resistance is the ability of a population (of insects) to survive a dose (of insecticide) that would normally kill 100 per cent of a susceptible population. Insecticide resistance is a dynamic phenomenon dependent on biochemical, physiological, genetic and ecological factors.

The chances of development of insecticide resistance in stored grain insect pest are more because of their life style, i.e., to remain confined in limited area. This results in more common inbreeding of the homozygous resistant strain resulting into homozygous resistant progeny. At the same time their management, once detected, can be easily achieved with the application of sufficiently acceptable sufficiently higher dose of the most appropriate insecticide to eliminate all the resistant survivors

The insect pest of stored grains can be conveniently divided into two groups, i.e., coleopterous and lepidopterous, therefore, the subject on these two groups has been pooled accordingly.

Wool serves as a dense, wavy, and fibrous protective layer for sheep, primarily made up of the insoluble protein keratin. The wool fiber develops from follicles located in the dermis, which is the skin’s middle layer. Each wool fiber comprises two distinct layers:
1. Outer layer: This layer consists of flat, irregularly shaped scales that overlap, resembling fish scales. These scales are less tightly bound than those found in hair and are essential to the wool’s characteristics, such as its capacity to shrink, strengthen, and felt. The outer layer also affects the overall quality of the wool. While the sheep is alive, the outer scales are coated with wool sweat or grease (termed suint), secreted by specialized glands to preserve the fiber’s condition. This grease can be partially removed during washing, and its presence influences the wool’s condition, which pertains to the quantity of grease or oil present in the wool.
2. Inner layer: Known as the cortex, this layer is composed of long fibrils that are bonded together. In contrast to hair, which contains an air-filled medulla in its inner layer, wool does not possess this feature, contributing to its superior strength compared to hair.
Morphological Structure of Wool: Technically, wool comprises three layers: cuticle or epidermis, cortex and medulla.
1. Cuticle: The outermost layer of the wool fiber, referred to as the cuticle, is made up of flat, irregularly shaped scales that overlap with their edges directed toward the fiber tip. This overlapping configuration, akin to roof tiles, produces a rough texture that increases friction and aids in felting. When disturbed, these scales interlock, leading to the entanglement of fibers and the formation of a matted fabric, which is beneficial for felted textiles. Additionally, the cuticle possesses a waxy coating that offers a water-repellent barrier, preventing water penetration while permitting moisture vapor absorption, thereby enhancing wool’s resistance to water-based stains and improving comfort by wicking moisture away.

43.1 Introduction

Game fish (also known as sport fish or quarry) are freshwater or saltwater fish that are pursued by recreational anglers or fished with a rod and line from clear running water (Hora 1943). Some game fish (such as salmon and tuna) are commercially targeted. In other words, game fish are fish caught for sport or subsistence. Trophy f ish are game fish that are larger and heavier than the average for the species.

Style of garden holds a distinctive appearance, typically determined by the principles according to which gardening can be worked out. There are basically four styles of gardening that are followed to establish any garden. Brief of them are given below.

There is loosening of cell wall of climacteric fruits during ripening. The enzyme pectin methyl esterase (PME), is responsible for the de-esterification of pectin (major constituent of cell wall) into pectic acid (or Polygalacturonic acid) and methanol. Polygalacturonic acid serves as a substrate for PG (Polygalacturonase) enzyme. This enzyme (PG) starts depolymerization of pectic acid leading to the formation of small chains of tri, di and monogalacturonic acids.

A large number of pathogens also have been reported to produce pectic enzymes to macerate the plant tissue. Hence, in addition to its role in ripening process and shelf life of fruits, the enzyme PG is also studied in relation to the diseases of the plants.

Abstract

Livestock remain a lifeline for many of the world’s poorest people. Cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, chickens and other farm animals form part of the livelihood portfolios of an estimated 70 per cent of the world’s rural poor women and men. For many smallholder farmers, livestock are essentially four-legged bank accounts, allowing hundreds of millions of unbanked poor to build assets and to insure themselves against shocks such crop failures, accidents and illnesses. Such assets and insurance are particularly important to women, who remain the backbone of global smallholder agriculture and who are one of the best hopes for ensuring future global food security. Across the world’s varied livestock production systems, women are main actors in poultry, small ruminant and micro livestock production as well as in dairying including the processing and marketing of milk and milk products. But women are often still excluded from household decision-making processes, especially regarding the disposal of animals and animal products. This lack of female control over livestock assets and income impinges on family welfare as well as economic growth.

The valorization of agri-biomass and organic waste is governed by a mix of regulations, standards, and policies aimed at promoting resource efficiency, reducing environmental impact, and fostering sustainable development. These measures include national and international initiatives, sector-specific laws, and economic instruments designed to incentivize waste management and promote the utilization of byproducts for energy, materials, and other applications. The valorization of agri-biomass and organic waste into biofuels, bio-based chemicals, bioenergy, and other value-added products is increasingly being recognized as a critical pillar of sustainable development, circular economy, and climate action. In India, the regulatory and policy framework surrounding this sector has evolved significantly in recent years, reflecting growing governmental interest in managing agricultural residues, reducing pollution, promoting renewable energy, and incentivizing green industries. A wide range of ministries—such as the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (MoA&FW), and Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG)—as well as regulatory bodies like Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) play pivotal roles in formulating and enforcing the relevant policies, regulations, and technical standards. One of the flagship policies in this domain is the National Policy on Biofuels (2018, revised 2022), which provides a roadmap for blending biofuels such as ethanol, biodiesel, and compressed biogas (CBG) with conventional fuels. It promotes the use of second-generation (2G) feedstocks like agricultural residues, municipal solid waste, and non-edible oilseeds for biofuel production. Under this policy, the government supports financial incentives, viability gap funding, R&D investments, and market linkages to boost bio-refinery infrastructure. This is supplemented by the SATAT (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation) initiative, launched by MoPNG, which aims to establish 5,000 CBG plants across India using agri-residues, cattle dung, and organic waste, thereby encouraging decentralized waste valorization.

There are great variations in the life cycles of fungi. Raper (1954, 1966b) recognizes seven basic types.

5.1 Asexual cycle

In which sexual reproduction apparently lacks and diploidy is restricted to somatic diploids. The entire groups known as Fungi Imperfecti and numerous other species which clearly belong to various groups of the perfect fungi such as Penicillium notatum have this life cycle. Certain benefits of sexuality are provided here in many of the sterile forms by para sexual recombination.

Values: Values are characteristics of things that make them more or less desirable, important, or useful.

Variability: Absence of uniformity. Quality of differing from the average value. This term is usually used in a general sense and qualified by such words as ‘low’, ‘moderate’, and ‘high’. For quantitative comparisons, the concept of a variance is used.

Ducks serve as natural or “biological” aerators in integrated farming systems. In India, they are typically raised in inexpensive shelters constructed on the pond embankments. Ducks contribute to aquaculture not only by splashing water with their webbed feet—thus enhancing aeration—but also by controlling aquatic weeds, insects, mollusks, and tadpoles. Their droppings act as organic manure, significantly boosting the pond’s primary productivity. For achieving a targeted production level of over 3,500 kg/ha, a combination of six fish species—Catla (20%), Silver carp (20%), Rohu (20%), Mrigal (15%), Grass carp (10%), and Common carp (15%)—should be stocked at a density of 8,000 to 8,500 fingerlings/ha. This integrated model is suitable for grow-out and stocking ponds where fish are above 12 grams in weight (Figure). The adoption of integrated fish-and-duck farming can significantly boost fish yields in both seasonal and perennial ponds—from an average of 200–500 kg/ ha to 1,000–4,000 kg/ha.
