Waste is not actually waste but is the by-product of various activities of human life. The unclean handling of these wastes creates problem for public health departments and local bodies. The classification of waste depends on the agencies that classify these wastes according to the area of interest and method of disposal viz. medical field, agricultural field, local bodies, industries etc.

In the present paper, the emphasis is given to the classification based on agricultural activities which includes a) Agricultural marketing waste b) Meat and fish marketing waste.

Principle: Acetone is used for extraction the most nonionic pesticide residue, and residue are partitioned from acetone to dichloromethane/hexane phase. After removing traces dichloromethane, final extract is made up with acetone. This extract can be determined by GC with selective detectors FPD-P/NPD without cleanup. Further for organochlorine and synthetic pyrethroids extract should be cleaned up using florisil column. And for determination organophosphate extract should undergo to charcoal-celite cleanup.

Enumeration of microbial flora present in soil is done by dilution plating technique. The technique is based on the fact of diluting the source inoculums to the extent that after plating the known volume of inoculums on appropriate media, the colonies will appear in countable range and each colony will be assumed to have been derived from a single cell/colony forming unit. Three numerically dominant groups of soil microbes are bacteria, actinobacteria and fungi. The most commonly used culture media for their enumeration include

Nutrient Agar-for heterotrophic bacteria,

Actinomycetes isolation Agar or Kenknight and Munaier’s agar for actinobacteria

Martin’s Rose Bengal Agar for fungi.

Macromolecule: A molecule having molecular weight ranging from few thousand to millions.

Macronutrients: The essential elements which are required by plants in comparatively large amounts are called as major elements or macro nutrients. Examples: C, H, O, N, P, K, Ca, S, Mg. In this C, H, O, N, P, K are called primary elements and Ca, S, Mg are called as secondary elements.

Malate shuttle: A mechanism of transferring reducing equivalent of cytosolic NADH in the form of malate across the inner mitochondrial membrane by a specific ketoglutarate malate transporter for oxidation through electron transport chain in little animal tissue like heart muscle.

Malic enzyme: An enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of malate to pyruvate and carbondioxide.

Objective: To study the morphological description and field identification characteristics of various temperate tree species.

Observation recording: For correct identification of any temperate tree species, it is necessary to observe the type of bark, type of leaf, leaf arrangement and surface of leaf. For easy understanding of the students some examples are given in table:

Abstract

Bioinformatics is an important interdisciplinary field that brings together several areas of science, including molecular biology, biostatistics, and computer science (vis-a-vis information technology). With the rapid increase in the sequencing of DNA/RNA/protein molecules, as well as the growing understanding of the interconnections between different areas of biological science, the importance of bioinformatics is only increasing. This chapter seems to provide a thorough introduction to the definition, concept, and importance of bioinformatics. It also appears to highlight the relevance and potential scope of the subject for students interested in pursuing a career in the field. As bioinformatics continues to evolve and expand, it is likely to become an increasingly important area of research and development in the life sciences.

Cutaneous lymphoma has two types viz. Epitheliotropic and non- epitheliotropic. Epitheliotropic lymphoma (mycosis fungoides) is mostly seen in the skin which is characterized by erythema, pruritus, alopecia, scaling, erosion and ulceration. It mostly occurs in plaques or nodules (Figure 80). Non-epitheliotropic lymphomas are observed as nodules. They are usually sheets of nodules seen in the deep dermal and subcutaneous tissue.

The biotechnology laboratory is conducted as a “directed” research project. 5. Description

Dhaman is a moderate-sized to large tree of family Tiliaceae. It is a very close relative of Phalsa. The yellow flower resembles the true Phalsa flower very much. The main difference is in the leaves. The main trunk can be 60cm or more in diameter. The leaves of Dhaman are oblique heart-shaped. Tree trunk is grey or dark brown. It flowers in April- May. The flowers are small, borne on thick axillary peduncles. Whole fruit expect seed are consumed at ripe stage. The tree is harvested from the wild for local use of its fibre, wood and edible fruit. 7. Morphology

Large trees, bark dark brown or greyish-brown, rough, vertically striated; blaze brownish-red, fibrous, streaked; branchlets stellate-tomentose. Leaves simple, alternate; stipules 7-10 mm, lateral, auricled; petiole 8-35 mm, stout, swollen tipped, pubescent; lamina 6-36 x 3-24 cm, broadly ovate or obliquely ovate to round, base obliquely cordate or subcordate, apex acute, margin double serrate or crenate-serrate, glabrescent above and hoary pubescent beneath, coriaceous, 5-7-ribbed from base, prominent, lateral nerves 3-6 pairs, pinnate, prominent, intercostae scalariform, prominent. Flowers bisexual, yellow, in axillary umbels; peduncle 1.5-2 cm long; sepals 5, pubescent; petals 5, yellow, half the length of sepals, entire or notched, densely tomentose outside; stamens many, free, inserted on a glandular torus; gland densely villous on the margin; ovary superior, globose, hirsute, 2-4-celled, ovules 2-many; style subulate; stigma obscurely lobed, recurved. Fruit a drupe, globose to subglobose, reddish-purple, 2-lobed, sparsely hairy.

Weed

Weed in orchards reduce crop yields by competing for moisture, nutrients, light and space. They also harbour insect pests and diseases. When they become large they interfere with orchard operations. Some of weeds climb on the trees and shade the foliage. There are some weeds which are parasitic partially or completely on the host tree e.g. Striga and loranthes on mango.

NAD/NADP (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide/ Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide Phosphate): Coenzymes acting as carriers of hydrogen atoms and electrons in some oxidoreductases catalyzed reactions. Their oxidized and reduced states are NAD⁺ and NADH + H⁺/NADP⁺ and NADPH + H⁺

Nanotechnology: Nanotechnology refers broadly to a field of applied science and technology whose unifying theme is the control of matter on the molecular level in scales smaller than 1 micrometre, normally 1 to 100 nanometers, and the fabrication of devices within that size range.

Nastic movement: Nastic movements are non-directional responses to stimuli (e.g., temperature, humidity, light irradiance), and are usually associated with plants. The movement can be due to changes in turgor or changes in growth. An example of such a response is opening and closing of flowers. There are several types of nastic movements such as Epinasty, Hyponasty, Photonasty, Nyctinasty, Chemonasty, Hydronasty, Thermonasty, Geonasty/Gravinasty, Thigmonasty, etc.

Tip-burn is the marginal collapse and necrosis of rapidly spreading inner lettuce leaves, at or near the leaf margins. Typically, the condition occurs near harvest, when it may lead to complete crop failure. Early signs include discoloration of the veins and/or the growth of dark brown to black spots near or at the margins of the leaves. The necrotic areas coalesce as the disease progresses, creating a lesion up to several centimeters long.

Abstract

As an interdisciplinary field, bioinformatics has grown gradually from molecular biology, with the development of various algorithms, databases, and other important tools that have helped to advance computational biology. Some important events in the history of bioinformatics might include the development of the first algorithms for sequence alignment and comparison, the creation of early databases such as GenBank and Swiss- Prot, and the development of software tools for molecular modeling and drug design. Other key milestones might include the sequencing of the first genomes, the development of high-throughput sequencing technologies, and the emergence of new areas of research such as systems biology and synthetic biology. By understanding the historical context of bioinformatics, students and researchers can gain a deeper appreciation for the current state of the field and the ongoing efforts to advance our understanding of the molecular mechanisms that underlie life.

About the Lower Bhavani Project

The Lower Bhavani Project (LBP) is located in Tamil Nadu in Bhavani River, irrigates 83980 ha in two seasons in a year. The canal water supply is provided for one wet crop from August to December (41885 ha) and one dry crop from January to April (41885 ha). The cultivated area under LBP in Erode and Coimbatore districts are irrigated lands with canals and groundwater, and rainfed crop lands (with supplemental groundwater irrigation).

In climatology, terms “Weather” and “Climate” have different connotations. Weather refers to the state of atmosphere at any given time denoting the short- term variations of atmosphere in terms of temperature, pressure, wind, moisture, cloudiness, precipitation and visibility. Weather is highly variable. It is constantly changing, sometimes from hour to hour and at other times from day to day. The aforementioned properties of the atmosphere are subject to constant change and their state at any time determines the state of the weather. However, weather elements are not separate rather they are closely related with each other.

David I. Blumenstock, an eminent climatologist has defined the weather in more restrictive sense. According to him, weather is the behaviour of the lower atmosphere with particular emphasis on the atmospheric behaviour which affect the lands and oceans and have a marked influence on the organisms that live upon the lands, within the waters of the earth or in the lower air. For the geographer, this definition of weather is more satisfactory. Since, he is interested more in the working of the lower atmosphere which affects the life of man as well as natural environment directly. Thus, we come across a great many varieties of weather covering a wide range of conditions.

In molecular biology and biochemistry, the ability to accurately and reproducibly measure and transfer small volumes of liquids is critical for obtaining useful results. For volumes less than 1 ml, the most common method for measuring liquid volumes involves the use of a device known as a pipetman or micro-pipette.

The pipetmen can be both fixed and variable volumes. Commonly used pipetmen are: P1000, P200, P20, P10 etc. P1000 are useful for volumes from 200 to 1000 µl. P200 are useful for volumes from 20 to 200 µl. P20 are useful for volumes from 0.5 to 20 µl. For beginners fixed volume pipetmen are more useful. It is important to ascertain whether the correct pipetman is chosen for measuring the volume one needs.
