Technology Assessment and Refinement
What is Technology Assessment?
Technology assessment serves as a method or tool for forecasting future technological needs. It helps in envisioning or predicting potential technological developments required by users and in identifying areas where existing technologies can be improved. In agriculture, evaluating a technology means understanding its worth or effectiveness. This evaluation can be done by researchers, farmers, or other relevant stakeholders. The knowledge obtained from such evaluations is essential for creating new technologies, improving existing ones, and ensuring their successful adoption by end users.
The approach to technology assessment varies depending on who is conducting the evaluation, the purpose behind it, and the specific characteristics of the technology being assessed. It is commonly defined as the organized and intentional use of knowledge, skills, and experience to carry out a task or deliver a service that contributes to the well-being of society.
Technology Assessment: Definition and Objectives
According to Strasser (1972), technology assessment is a structured approach to planning and forecasting that identifies various options and associated costs. It considers not only economic factors but also environmental and social impacts, both internal and external to the technology being evaluated. The assessment places emphasis on analyzing both the positive and negative consequences of technologies. As such, institutions involved in the development, refinement, and dissemination of agricultural technologies have a significant stake in conducting technology assessments.

Introduction

With the growing population, increase in demand, and per capita income, tremendous pressure is put on the supply side, pushing them to rely on unsustainable practices to meet this existing and future demand. Compromising on sustainability has not only been responsible for climate change but also other negative environmental externalities. The modern agricultural corporate structure known as agribusiness, which can introduce sustainable and innovative technology into the agricultural sector, would pave the way for achieving all the sustainability dimensions, viz., social, economic, and environmental. With this expanding agribusiness sector, farmers can create a win-win alliance that maintains environmental harmony and financial success. There seems to be a huge scope to achieve sustainability goals well in advance by exploring the pathways with the help of the agri-business sector.

As the global population continues to grow, there will be an ever-increasing demand placed on the agricultural industry to provide more food as well as other raw materials. It is anticipated that farmers will need to produce 70% more food than is currently cultivated to feed up to 10 billion people by the year 2055 (Alexandratos & Bruinsma, 2012). However, the situation is aggravated due to shrinking cultivated areas, depletion of natural resources, higher production costs, fewer farmers, and climatic changes. We are in the middle of a perfect storm of social, economic, and environmental pressures on the food supply around the world. Along with the increasing production and productivity, it has to be taken care of that the natural resources and environment are not exploited indiscriminately. Agriculture is both a threat to climate change and a possible way to stop it. Therefore, sustainability in agriculture is the only way forward. This commitment rests not only with the governments but with all the players in the agricultural supply chain. A holistic approach that concurrently tackles issues of environmental integrity, social equality, and economic prosperity is what we mean when we talk about sustainability. Over the course of the previous few decades, its significance to businesses operating in virtually all fields has grown substantially.

4.1 Introduction

The present chapter starts with a brief description about the history of commodity futures market and emergence of commodity futures market in India. There after it highlights various functions of commodity futures market and their impact on farmers and various other stake holders in the supply chain. Finally, it tries to evaluate the utility of futures from the platform of commodity exchanges especially from MCX and NCDEX of India.

A simple definition of a commodity is a physical substance that can be extracted directly from the environment, processed and sold commercially. Natural resource is another term often used to describe commodities which occur naturally in or on the ground. Commodities fall into three main categories such as energy, metals and agriculture. As commodities can be sold, they have a price which is governed by supply and demand. Compared to many manufactured items, for example flat screen TVs, the question of supply and demand is paramount to how commodities are priced. The commodities that have always been a part of our day-to-day existence are also one of the finest investment avenues available. The wheat in our bread, the cotton in our clothes, our gold jewels, the oil that runs our vehicles etc are all traded across the world in major exchanges. Commodities can be traded on either spot markets, or in the form of futures. Spot markets are those in which the commodity is traded immediately in exchange for cash or some other good. In the form of futures (or options), what is traded is not the goods itself, but a contract to buy or sell the commodity for a certain price by a stated date in the future. Over the ages, commodities have been the basis for trade and industry. They have prompted commerce, encouraged exploration and altered the histories of nations. Today, they play a very important role in the world economy with billions of dollars of these commodities traded each day on exchanges across the world. Commodities today have become an attractive investment vehicle. In the current investment scenario, it is increasingly getting difficult for individuals and institutions to create a well-balanced investment portfolio. With uncertainty in interest ratio, it is tough for the investor to beat the ever-rising inflation. Averse to being over exposed to equity markets, the investors are left with limited choices… well no more!

Introduction

Over the course of past decades India is one of the fastest growing economies of the world with a robust growth and transformations in its economy. In this journey subsidies played a crucial role in influencing market behaviour, support industries, address market failures, and achieve social and economic objectives of the country. Now what actually the economic subsidies are.

Subsidies are financial incentives provided by governments to individuals, businesses, or industries in the form of cash, grants, or tax breaks to influence economic behaviour and outcomes. They aim to correct market failures, promote specific industries, encourage production, and address economic challenges. Subsidies can be direct (cash payments) or indirect (tax breaks), benefiting recipients by reducing burdens or promoting certain actions. They are in the public interest, supporting social goods or economic policies.

The importance of subsidies lies in their ability to offset market failures and externalities, leading to greater economic efficiency. By providing financial aid, subsidies can stimulate production, increase supply, lower prices for consumers, and drive economic growth in targeted sectors. They play a crucial role in stabilizing economies, responding to economic shocks, and promoting long-term economic stability. Subsidies can also help governments address poverty, encourage investment in research and development, and support essential industries like agriculture, energy, and healthcare.

Building and honing up skills for managing any business is an important endeavor. Regardless of whether one is running a small business or a large company individual with good management skills are always essential. The role and structure of the farm business in modern agriculture is changing.

Introduction

Agriculture has always been linked with prosperity, man power and the ability to feed and raise human population. In earlier times, humans as man power were deployed on the fields to do all the necessary operations to cultivate the crops, but during the industrial revolution, with development of different farm machines the uses of human labor on the fields were drastically decreased. Further, with advancement of technologies and more availability of computers, Artificial Technology (AI) has been gaining momentum in recent years.

AI has the potential to transform the agricultural sector through cost reduction and increased crop yields, and minimizing environmental impacts. AI can help farmers better manage their land, improve crop quality, and increase their productivity In addition, AI can be used to monitor and analyze the health of crops, livestocks, and soils to identify issues and assist in their resolution. The primary idea of using artificial intelligence in agriculture is due its adaptability, superiority, and cost-viability. The customary techniques that were utilized by the farmers were not adequate enough to satisfy their necessities. (Khan et al. 2022) With the right implementation and technology, AI can be an invaluable tool to help farmers increase their efficiency and profitability. In today’s rapidly evolving world, where the demand for food continues to escalate amidst concerns over environmental sustainability and resource scarcity, Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a transformative force in agriculture, from optimizing crop production and resource management to enhancing decision-making processes. Globally, AI is changing how we approach farming techniques.

Introduction

The world of finance revolves around the management, generation, and analysis of money and investment opportunities. Financial professionals orchestrate a complex dance involving credit, borrowing, and various investment instruments like securities and stocks. This intricate choreography aims to fund present endeavours using a strategic allocation of anticipated future income. Since finance deals with the flow of money across time, grasping the time value of money is essential. Understanding interest rates and how they impact investments becomes paramount for making sound financial decisions that consider both present needs and future goals. This intricate web of concepts is what finance professionals navigate to ensure the optimal use of financial resources. Finance can be broadly divided into three types:

1. Public finance

2. Corporate finance

3. Personal finance

1. Public Finance: The government steps in to prevent the economy from going off track by managing how resources are distributed, income is shared fairly, and the economy remains stable. Taxes are the main way the government gets the money to fund these programs.

The digital age has revolutionized the way we live, work, and interact with the world around us. Digital transformation has become a crucial imperative for businesses of all sizes and industries, enabling them to not only adapt to the changing landscape but also thrive in it. (De Lucas,2021). The rapid advancement of technologies such as 5G, cloud computing, big data, artificial intelligence, IoT, and blockchain has opened up a plethora of opportunities for enterprises to enhance their operations, improve customer experiences, and gain a competitive edge. (Anjali et al, 2023). Businesses can increase their reach, automate jobs, obtain insights from data, personalize services, and streamline procedures by utilizing these technologies. They must reconsider their business models and implement more flexible and agile strategies in response to these exponential changes. (Bansal et al, 2020, Fenech et al, 2019).

Introduction

Stocks from different firms can be traded and listed on the stock market. In addition, the stock market evaluates listed firms based on their worth, effectiveness, profitability, and capability. Anybody can trade shares on the stock market, which is an open global market. GDP is the total amount of profit produced in a country over a given period. To develop products and services in a country to a plausible degree, it is helpful to measure the monetary policy of completed goods and services that are acquired for a single end consumer. It comprises all earnings generated inside a country’s borders. The GDP of any nation may be used to determine the size and state of that nation’s economy. GDP is a measure of a nation’s total production and performance and is used as a gauge of economic health. Strong GDP growth frequently signals more consumer spending, corporate profitability, and company expansion, all of which are positive indicators of optimistic mood in the stock market. On the other hand, a slow GDP growth rate might undermine investor confidence and cause stock values to decline.
